officials say a mall shooter brought with him. darian aguilar entered near the skateboard shop and then went downstairs to a food court. he returned less than an hour later, dumped his backpack in a dressing room and started shooting. shoppers fled in panic or barricaded themselves inside a mall. those victims are identified as 21-year-old brianna ben lolo and 21-year-old tyler johnson. >> right now we don't have any type of known relationship between the shooter and our victims. not saying there's not one, we just haven't uncovered one. that's what our investigators are working very, very hard at trying to recover. they found a journal at his home which say expressed general

unhappiness but left no real clues as to the motive. the mall is expected to reopen this afternoon. brutal and record blasting temperatures are slamming parts of the country for the next two days or so they'll range from the teens to below zero. wind chills even worse. minneapolis, 43 below. minus 23 in milwaukee and chicago's public schools are closed today. hundreds of flights already canceled. that brings us to wendy wolfo who is live for us in chicago at the navy pier. >> hey, veronica. this is the fourth arctic blast of the season and it's supposed to be the coldest one yet. this part of the country hasn't thawed from the first round with the polar vortex and now we're bracing for yet another. as you mentioned, the public schools are canceled here in chicago and surrounding suburbs. public transportation schedules as well as train schedules are

modified because it's just too dangerous to stay outside for long periods of time in these conditions. there is also a propane shortage across the midwest so many people are looking for heating alternatives. this relentless weather pattern is really starting to wear on people in this part of the country and it's only january. the temperatures are falling here in chicago and the temperatures are supposed to remain below zero for the next two and a half days. meantime, the wintery mix is supposed to reach the deep south part of this country by tomorrow. brutal even for winter's standards. live in chicago, i'm wendy woolfolk, back to you. nbc's bill karins on this deep freeze? >> wendy looks way too good and way too comfortable. >> she looks good. >> must have jumped out of a warm truck or something. >> i was going to say that. >> they are canceling school in the midwest because the winds are nasty. all of that is headed to the deep south. that's the big story.

minneapolis to green bay, this has been a brutal winter. top five all time cold winters. minus 45 in international falls. all of that cold air is heading into kansas city, indianapolis. soon into pittsburgh. i circled the area in the deep south from houston to new orleans to atlanta to areas around south carolina because you have a winter storm heading your way. winter storm watches from houston to the outer banks. already winter storm warnings for myrtle beach where they could get three inches of snow. wilmington could get three inches of snow. somewhere out in eastern north carolina including the outer banks could end up with six inches of snow. that's a big deal for that area of the country. as far as our snow maps go, my computer is telling me 1 to 3 inches as far south as mobile, alabama, through southern georgia. that does not head up into the northeast or mid-atlantic. it's a on event. it's in and out before we get to wednesday. this has been a rough stretch.

this is going down as one of the coldest januarys we've seen. >> we're really getting it this year. >> just the opposite of the west coast who has record highs. >> 83 degrees. a natural gas pipeline in canada that exploded saturday is expected to be operating at full capacity this afternoon. the blast sent flames hundreds of feet into the air. evacuated residents said they could feel the heat from the blaze. >> it was like being at a barbecue, at a bonfire, but the wind was as hot as that. >> no injuries reported but more than 5,000 customers lost their gas supply because of the explosion. well, the family of a brain dead pregnant woman in texas is preparing for her funeral. the court battle over keeping her on life support for the sake of her unborn fetus ended sunday. john peter smith hospital in fort worth obeyed a judge's order to stop life sustaining treatment. they issued a statement saying

campaigned as a conservative but has lent his support to issues associated with things like immigration reform. looking ahead to president obama's state of the union address tomorrow, the white house says three words will sum it up. opportunity, action, and optimism. but for the first time before a state of the union address, more americans disapprove of the president than approve. 50 to 46 according to a new abc/washington post poll. it's even worse in congress. 27% say they have confidence in democrats. just 19% in republicans. and "saturday night live" not holding back when it comes to poking some fun at the tea party. >> utah senator mike lee will deliver the tea party response to president obama's state of the union address next week. it's expected to be the exact same text of obama's speech but delivered in this voice. >> and that's going to do it for

your morning dish of scrambled politics. joining me from washington, washington post reporter david nakamura. always good to see you. good morning. >> hi, veronica. >> let's start with the state of the union tomorrow night. the washington post has been breaking down the president's talking points i've been reading. i know you've written a little bit about it. what can we expect to hear? >> overall, you showed the poll that shows president obama's approval ratings down. he's going to talk about this year of action. that means getting away from last year where he didn't get much done. he's going to try to talk a lot more about what he's going to do in taking executive actions. in terms of bigger picture pieces, the president won't say he won't deal with congress at all. he'll push for immigration reform, he'll push for solving the question of inequality, income inequality and talk about pushing for a raise of the minimum wage which is a big white house agenda. he'll talk about climate change

where the president will do more without congress's approval in terms of executive actions. what they're trying to get across is last year was last year. this year there's a lot more to do before the election cycle. the white house won't wait for congress if congress is not going to act. >> meantime, the gop has prepared not one, david, but three different responses to the president's speech. what do you make of this? i mean, what does that say about how divided the party is? >> this is something the party has clearly been wrestling with. the gop spent a lot of time after the 2012 election saying what did we do wrong? we have to broaden our reach. we have to find our way. this explains all the problems they're facing. you have kathy mcmorris rogers doing the official response but then you have mike lee giving the tea party response. rand paul will shoot his own response to his e-mail list and twitter. as republicans such as rand paul started looking towards the white house race in 2016,
