a political firestorm brews. nearly 48 hours, almost as many cars and trucks on the side of the road as on the highways themselves. there was this to tail this morning on "morning joe." >> the fact of the matter is we have an independent school system in the city, an independent state government and independent municipal government. i think we need to work much harder on coordination, and we certainly will, and i acknowledge that. >> nbc's gabe gutierrez is in atlanta with more. as many know, the metropolitan area about three times the size of manhattan, the size of los angeles -- this is a big place with a lot of cars. >> reporter: good morning. things are improving here in atlanta.

we're expecting to crack the freezing mark this afternoon. that should go a long way. many of the residential areas still are not. they are very icy. i can tell you that from personal experience coming here this morning. many schools are closed, but all the students that were trapped, they are back home. they got back home last night. state offices are closed. as you mentioned, mayor kasim reed defending his decision passionately. he is correct that many of the images shown on national media have shown the gridlock on the interstate. that is technically not the city of atlanta's responsibility. however, as i mentioned, we went to a school yesterday that -- where 90 students were trapped there, and it was very difficult to get to that school. so there's a lot of debate about whether atlanta and state officials did not see this coming.

meteorologists say they gave the warning sinds. still many residents are furious. they say that state and local officials, no matter the jurisdiction, really should have seen this coming. now, today many drivers will be allowed to go back and retrieve their vehicles. there were hundreds of stranded vehicles on the interstate. there's an organized effort to try to get them off the road this afternoon. >> hopefully some lessons learned there as another storm goes your way very soon. thank you so much. another big story. house government leaders have just wrapped up a news conference at their annual winter retreat. among other topics, immigration. some are expecting to butt heads on this issue. this comes after a number of top

most interesting fights, into you it genuinely divides the republican party on principles. we're not talking about tactics over shutting the government down or have a fight over the debt ceiling. there are huge differences. a lot of republicans, many polls suggest the majority favor a path to citizenship for people who are here illegally. pay fines, and that group includes a lot of the business community other than the there shall people who are very wary of any path to citizenship. so this is a big fight in the party. what i'm hearing is there is a shot -- and the key person in this may be paul ryan, because

he clearly does believe in immigration reform, and i think a lot of the drama will be around the definition of some words, or a lot of republicans say we don't want to have a special path to citizenship for people who are here illegally. there will be a lot to hang on what that word "special" means. i think there's an opening, it will take time, but with this congress, you never bet too much on action. >> a lot of moving parts, as you're basically saying, e.j. susan, let me add to that. we have the house gop that sent a letter to president obama. el a paid time off bill and research funding bill for childhood diseases and disorders, so let's just say here, susan, the house gets that done. they play along with each other. will somebody like that be in lieu of immigration or minute

mum wage issues, the other key issues that are being debated. >> i do think these other issuesic looks raising the minimum wage are just more different. i think the fundamental clash may be between a path to citizenship and path to legal status. i think a lot of republicans would support a path to legal status, but not citizenship. democrats have staked out a line saying it has to be a path to citizenship to avoid creating a type of second class. you know, some things are going to get done, maybe we won't have a showdown over the dead ceiling next month, but some of these big pieces, it's hard to see how it gets done this weekend. let's double down on the showdown word. this showdown that's been headlined as republicans are meeting, do you expect something concrete to come out of this as

they were intimating in the headline? >> i think they'll come out with principles. whether that gets you to the next stage, i don't know. >> e.j.? >> i think they will not resolve all the their differences, because there are fundamental differences there. but i think we'll learn a lot about how they frame these principles, but i agree with susan that the fight is about how many people who are here illegally can get on a path to citizenship, but i think there may be a range of options there. you might end up, if you get a bill, with some compromise that's closer to everybody that is closer to zero. >> now as the president is hitting the road, he's out there pushing the message, right? in wisconsin as a g.e. engine

this hour we are watching developments coming out of florence, italy, where at any moment if amanda knox is a fugitive again convicted or a woman whose name has finally been cleared. knox did not travel to italy for the third trial in this case, but her ex-boyfriend has been there, hoping too that his name will be cleared in the murder of meredith hersher. keith miller is live. there any word about where this might end up today. >> well, not yesterday, it will be several hours before we actually hear a verdict. and other members of the cord to assemble. the speculation is there's no grounds of facts on this, but

image of the democratic party as hillary clinton. i saw that happen here in indiana with evan bayh, that's all that democrats did. once he stepped away from the stage, the party collapsed. if she decides not to run, that could very well happen for them. >> no, i don't think so. comparing hillary clinton to evan bayh is like night and day, but i think the base for the party for her is women, people of color. that coalition would get behind her and get behind a joe biden. if she decides for whatever reason not to runs the democratic party would face some sort of xwlos. >> might there be something to take her camp to the decision to say we're not going to run? >> absolutely. so i think that anything can happen, and that's what republicans should be worried about.

the economy grew at a clip of 3.2%. that's in line with estimates that have been coming out, and for you, i would like to understand, what are your projections for the rest of the year? where do you expect us to end up? >> i think we've had 11 straight quarters of gdp growth, 2.2 million jobs in the last year, and 600,000 jobs in manufacturing over the last four years. so when i look forward, if our jobs is to build on that momentum and create the condition, so businesses can continue to grow. as they grow, they'll be able to create jobs. we're working around skilled work force training, so companiessh are able to do so. we at the department of commerce work very chloroly with businesses around the come to help themselves get their goods
