export authority official david wildste wildste wildstein. he says he has proof that governor chris christie knew about the plans to close those lanes while they were happening. the lawyer for wildstein says the closures were the christie administration's order and claims they have evidence of governor christie, quote, having knowledge of the lane closures during the period when the lanes were closed. we're reaching out to the governor's office and we have not independently confirmed this. joining us for the latest. if it is confirmed, a stunning development in the chris christie saga. do you have any updates you can give us at the moment? >> clearly so. we have reached out to all the
1:01 pm
parties involved here and can't confirm it at this point. but if it is as reported by "the new york times," it is a huge development in this. i just got a copy of a letter that was sent to the legislature saying they're not -- from the campaign manager. his lawyer says they're not going to comply with the subpoena to turn over documents and other records. they are invoking their fifth amendment rights as a result of the u.s. attorney investigation. so that's also a pretty significant development in this probe you have of the two -- of two of the three key parties. david wildstein, if this new york times report is correct, saying the governor did know. and then his campaign manager and former campaign manager
1:02 pm
saying they're not going to cooperate with the legislative investigation. >> what is the next step if they're invoking their fifth amendment rights? >> clearly, one can expect the legislative super committee to challenge that response and to take it to court just as they challenged the david wildstein's invocation of his fifth amendment rights when he did so a few weeks ago. there's clearly going to be a lot of court battles coming up on this very soon. >> steve, there was a lot of, i think, questions about how much was going to come of these subpoenas, whether there was going to be some evidence tying governor christie to the lane closures. david wildstein has been a christie ally so far. for his lawyer to release this information, may seem like the dam may have some cracks in it.
1:03 pm
>> i've worked with david wildstein. i have not seen him as a christie ally in this. he's been the wild card in this from the very beginning. he gets presented in the press as being a lifelong friend of chris christie's. they had very little sbrinteracn with each other over their high school years. chris christie was not this great protected figure we had to look out for. the biggest clue for me was when david wildstein sold his website to one of the biggest enemies in all of politics of chris christie. i have always seen david wildstein as the wild card in this. he's been sending clear signals that he wants a deal.
1:04 pm
he made that clear when he appeared before the assembly committee a few weeks ago. bill is conducting himself and his lawyer, they're thinking ahead to a trial. david wildstein is thinking about a deal. >> let us return to the day that governor christie in a two-hour long press conference denied in involvement with the bridge closings. let's hear that sound again. >> i had no knowledge or involvement in this issue. in its planning or its execution, and i am stunned by the abject stupidity that was shown here. >> michael, david wildstein's lawyer says there was evidence, possibly some kind of
1:05 pm
correspondence that would refute everything the governor just said. it would seem to be a fairly stunning -- it's the only word i can think of given the counterclaim we're seeing today. >> clearly, we would have to see any such documentation before reaching any conclusions here. we don't know what that is referring to, but i have been able to read a little further in the letter from mr. stepien's lawyer, in which they are again declining to turn over any of their documents that be subpoenaed by the legislative committee. and the language is interesting here. this is the letter from stepien's lawyer. the very real possibility the act of producing these documents to link the chain of evidence
1:06 pm
that could be used to ensnare him in a criminal prosecution is more than a compelling reason to withdraw that subpoena and force him to become a witness against himself. clearly his lawyer there is saying there is a chain of evidence that would ensnare him in the words of his own lawyer's letter there in this criminal investigation is revealing as well. now, that doesn't go to the governor's state of knowledge, what he knew or didn't know, which is what the wildstein letter is. you put these two developments together and you have some real significant developments in this case. >> yeah, again, we want to confirm we have not independently confirmed any of this evidence. this is a "new york times" report. wildstein is looking for a deal. stepien is looking ahead towards
1:07 pm
a trial. you look at that sound from the governor, january 9th, i believe. he's a former ag. he's a man of the law. it is surprising if there is actual evidence tying him to the ft. lee bridge closures, one would have expected him to phrase his statements more carefully. >> stepien, he's in a unique position. the u.s. attorney stepped in. the u.s. attorney subpoenaed two entities. bill stepien was the campaign manager of christie's reelection campaign. it creates these legal questions of what do you want to tell a legislative committee if the u.s. attorney is looking at you. the story that i thought of at
1:08 pm
the time was, people watched that performance from chris christie and said this is a man making a lot of absolute statements. he is clearly very confident in the story he's telling. the issue i took with that is i have seen chris christie do that before. i have seen him be that adamant and be completely and totally undercut just a few days later. he fired his education commissioner because brett had lied to him. the language he used in talking about bridget kelly a few weeks ago was the same language he used talking about brett. brett said, i probably deserve to be fired, but i didn't deserve to be called a liar. he had memos and e-mails he was able to put on the record that chris christie knew everything
1:09 pm
that brett knew. in that context, that was a limited sort of media fire storm. it was over in a abobout a week. >> to follow on that, the person that was most -- go ahead, michael. >> we do now have a copy of the letter from mr. wildstein's lawyer and it does say exactly as "the new york times" has reported that mr. wildstein contests the accuracy of the statements, of various statements, that the governor made about him and he can prove the inaccuracy of some. so that is the letter from david wildstein's lawyer contesting what governor christie has said about the lane closures. >> we are in receipt of a copy -- >> yes. >> michael, that was a letter to the port authority contesting the port authority's refusal to
1:10 pm
pay his legal bills? >> that's correct. yes. it deals in its first instance about the payment of his legal fees. >> we can confirm we are in receipt of a copy of the letter from david wildstein's lawyer alleging that governor christie knew about the ft. lee bridge closures and has evidence to prove that. the person that still remains in question is bridget kelly. she was the most aligned in that press conference and who has gotten more publicly shamed in the wake of the ft. lee bridge closures. what are we to expect? if wildstein is operating with his own interests at heart, stepien has developed his own strategy for dealing with this,
1:11 pm
where does bridget kelly fit? >> the lawyer she originally went with was intimately close to chris christie world. friends were saying, she feels terrible about all of this because how bad this has been for chris christie. it created the impression she was not out to take him down, to come out with anything that was going to make his situation any worse. a week after that, there was an abrupt change. a different top defense attorney took her case. is there a competition of sorts that will take place between bridget kelly and david wildstein? let's make a deal. who can offer the most? the one thing i want to say quickly about david wildstein, i think he's the most strategic

long-term thinker of any of the players in this game. this is somebody who built his online career for a dozen years through e-mails, online communications, through using a pseudonym establishing the trust of the biggest of big players on both sides of the aisles. he has e-mails from everybody in new jersey politics spilling their souls to him. that's something he's sitting on. >> steve, before we let you go here, and you're an invaluable source on all things new jersey, especially on the christie saga, rudy julianny came out in a full defense of chris christie a few weeks ago and seemed to parse that in recent days.
1:13 pm
did juliany have a sense of what was coming out? >> that's absolutely the sense i got. the way this has unfolded in the last two weeks -- the bottom line of that press conference, it was a strong presentation. it left everybody at the end of it say, i'm still no more clear about this. i'm more convinced there's something else he knows about and he's not telling us about. it's why all of the other stories about christie in the last few weeks is why the public has been so receptive of it. chris christie is maybe the kind of politician who has something
1:14 pm
