1,000 delays and cancellations. and it's not over yet. another storm is right behind it that could affect the northwest, northeast, and parts of the south. hello, everybody. i'm betty nguyen. nbc's ron mott is at laguardia airport checking out delays. let's go to bill first. bill, punxsutawney phil was not fooling around. >> reporter: where is that rodent? >> good morning, everyone. we'll let ron talk about the delays. we want to show you, these are the airports. if it's red, it's not good. philly to newark to laguardia, jfk. boston, it's not all that bad considering the other areas. the temperatures have been borderline and now the snow has been sticking since the middle of the rush hour. even some of the highways are getting snow-covered from philly to trenton. it's a heavy, wet snow.
8:01 am
they are calling it heart attack snow. it's very difficult to shovel and take your time with it because it will be strenuous. totals, they are not earth shattering. as high as 6 because it's been coming down the last couple of hours and as betty mentioned, there's another storm right behind this one. winter storm warnings from wichita to kansas city. it moves right across the country already from kansas, we have winter storm watches and that's where the winter weather is expect ed. the green on the map is rain. icy conditions near the ohio river and snow to the north side. it's a full blown snowstorm for kansas city. up to 8 to 12 inches here. that's a big storm for you. northern new england, you're going to have a snow day if you're a teacher up there throughout the england area and even indianapolis to chicago, they are going to get this snow. new york city has picked up 6 to

8 with this storm. the timing of that is wednesday morning. another 6 inches. a foot of snow within 48 hours. >> talk about groundhog day, we've seen this week after week after week. >> i forgot to mention the possible big storm coming on monday and tuesday. >> you can stop there, bill. thank you. appreciate it. let's go over to ron mott now live at laguardia airport where it's coming down. our super bowl fans having a hard time coming home? >> reporter: yeah. it's going to be hard for folks to get home. you can see the rain and snow mix here at laguardia. we ran into a couple of bronco fans. they were still smiling after the beating that they took. they were hoping to get home tonight. they just haven't gotten around to changing the early flights.
8:03 am
we can go up in the sky and visibility is very low at the moment. we are expecting this kind of snow to continue to fall until about 2:00, 3:00 and then it will taper off here and that's where we expect to get more activity with folks coming and going. i believe a lot of the folks have heard from their airlines, which is why we don't see a lot of traffic because normally you would expect to see on a monday morning a very busy terminal here at the american airlines terminal. i would say it's light to moderate at this point. obviously a lot of folks heard that their flights were not going to get off today. right now there's a traffic management program in effect here at laguardia, jfk, newark, philadelphia. delays coming in from 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours. so it's going to be a mess and, as you know, if you travel a lot, it cascades throughout the day. folks need to pack along with their suitcases. >> check in with the airlines, indeed.

ron mott at laguardia airport. thank you, ron. after a tumultuous week for chris christie, subpoenas tied to the governor are due today. this follows the resignation of another staffer christina renna. her resignation comes after wildstein claims to have contradicting evidence about christie and what he knew and when he knew it. the governor's office came out swinging a day later with a number of accusations aimed at wildstein going all the way back to high school. >> it just made christie seem like the smaller person. instead of christie letting that set, which he could have, he piles on in a way that made christie look more guilty.
8:05 am
>> meanwhile, the hits keep coming for the once wildly popular governor. he is booed twice saturday at a super bowl event in times square and democrats piled on with a football-themed attack ad. >> maybe the folks in washington, d.c., could tune in and see how it's done. >> if anyone looks at the chris christie performance on tuesday, they need to have their head examined. >> now, on the sunday shows, republican colleagues were standing by their man who they still want to head up their gop governor's group. >> i don't think he should step down. i think he should stay there. rga is not about one governor. it's about all 36 races. >> i consider chris christie a friend. he's been a fantastic governor. it's one person's word against another. you can't base a conclusion on such a thing. >> so far there's no evidence to
8:06 am
suggest that he's not telling the truth. i think the governor knows the consequences. if he's lying, it's a really bad situation. if he's not lying, then something very unfair is being done to him. >> and after last year's snub, the conservative political action conference has confirmed that governor christie will speak. i understand that governor christie's staffers have been given extensions for today's subpoena deadline? >> reporter: yes. most people, the 20 people who have been subpoenaed have requested extensions. that's not unusual when they've been asked about thousands and thousands of documents, e-mails, text messages related to the closure of the gorge washington bridge. how long would it take? they wouldn't tell us. but probably more weeks as opposed to days or hours. but the deadline is at 5:00 this evening. it's going to go on for a while and this is the problem for chris christie.

as you were pointing out this past weekend with the super bowl in new jersey, it was supposed to be a great time for him. all of this period was supposed to be a wonderful time for him when he was going to get a bigger step out on to the national stage but now you have what has been happening over the past weekend. every day perhaps there are going to be new developments, more allegations, more rumor about what he knew and didn't know. the key question, as somebody pointed out is, is he lying? that's why this whole matter with david wildstein, this former associate who is saying that, quote, some evidence exists that christie knew about the lane closures while they were going on. christie found out about it after the fact. if there was untruth about what christie said during that two-hour press conference some time ago, that's going to be a big problem for him. already the newspapers here in new jersey, the star ledger has used the word impeachment if he's lying. despite the allies coming to his

and as the subpoena documents start to come in and allegations that are swirling around will all be thoroughly investigated by the bipartisan committee. >> let's go through some of the allegations. some of them are tough, especially coming from the christie camp. they say, one, as a 16-year-old he sued over a local school board election, we're talking about wildstein here. he was accused of his high school teacher of deceptive behavior. he was an anonymous blogger known as wally edge. he had a strange habit of registering web addresses for multiple people. if wildstein was so untrustworthy, why did he appoint him to such a powerful position? and does this really show you where christie is when it comes to judgment? >> that's a good question. and i cannot speak on behalf of mr. christie and why he would hire an individual who he liked

warning." what's the subtle warning? >> well, president obama is taking a carrot and stick approach. the carrot is the republicans look very nice, i can work with you on this but on the other hand he's leaving the door open to executive action. he's been hinting recently in interviews that should congress fail to act on immigration, there may be some options available to him that he can take as president. and the one that republicans are very worried about is that he might slow or halt deportations for large groups of undocumented immigrants. he's already done this for dreamers or young, undocumented immigrants. they are concerned that they may issue a similar waiver because he's been pushing for immigration activists to do so. so there is this implication, yes, i may be patient to work for you but just so you know there may be options. >> sabrina, i want to bring you in. you say that republicans kept the language of the immigration principles pretty vague.
8:32 am
why is that? >> i think that they wanted to give themselves room to work with both sides and negotiate. they don't want to be too specific because you have the right flank that is opposed to any immigration reform what solve. they have to be cautious about what language they use right now. my sense is that they have to wait and watch and give republicans the space, give them the breathing room to sort out the divisions in their own party and don't want president obama to step in and jeopardize the prospects for reform that may enrage the republicans or cause them to walk away from the process altogether. i do not expect the president to be confrontational in the immediate future. he's not going to go on a full-scale campaign. i think he wants to give the leadership room to work with their own conference and if they fail to act or delay the issue into next year, that's where you might see the president step back in and escalate public pressure and erase public
8:33 am
reaction. >> how does timing factor in to all of this? >> i think what they are going to see, they now have principles and they need to put more meat on the bones to figure out whether the republican party, the extreme right is going to go with them. so one of the -- what i keep hearing from the hill is that boehner is not going to put it up for vote until after the majority of the republican primaries. that way, individual republicans that would like to vote for immigration reform, which is the vast majority of them, would like to vote for immigration reform. they don't have the fear that somebody is going to vote for them on the extreme right. it's going to be something that will come up in the spring but it's going to have to look at the details and, again, they keep pressing on this idea of immigration enforcement first, folks for getting that president obama is the largest deportation president in our history. cantor said they are not sure if they can trust the president because of his immigration

8:35 am
immigration supporters, like congressman mario told me that he thinks this can be overcome. the key is to put so many constraints in the legislation itself that it's impossible for any president to go around it. but a lot of democrats are very skeptical about this talk. it's possible that they are trying to get something specific in legislation or it's possible that it's a pre-emptive excuse for when they don't pass something to say, well, we agree in theory for immigration reform and we disagree with president obama on health care. it's a question of whether it's a good faith argument that can be overcome or more spin. >> there is more talk going on. sabrina, here is house majority leader eric cantor. >> the president has to demonstrate frankly to the country and congress that we can trust him with implementing the laws. look what he has done with obamacare. he has selectively enforced that law. >> what about the trust issue
8:36 am
that we've been talking about, sabrina? >> as i said earlier, they are not going to be particularly confrontational and jay carney last week when he was asked about the principles called it a step in the right direction. he didn't want to prejudge any sort of legislation that doesn't exist at this point. and you'll remember in the state of the union address, even though it was about a year of action and the president did hint at using executive authority on the issue of immigration he was much more conciliatory. he didn't really make any declarations about republicans or make it too partisan. he only mentioned immigration three times in a speech that spanned 7,000 words. so i think he's being extremely cautious. he knows that republicans don't trust him. it's very likely that that is not going to change but he wants to get house republicans in a position where they have a deal that they can broker with democrats and at least they can deliver the majority of her caucus and get something back to the senate. >> teresa, it's not just
