nor'easter. just how bad is it going to get? and chris christie's new interview. is the governor's garden state scandal growing every time he talks about it. super bowl is setting new records and how vegas scored millions in lost bets. the house always wins, baby. this is "way too early." hey, hey, everybody. good morning. i'm thomas rob berlts. it is tuesday, february the 4th. welcome to "way too early," the show where my microphone is always on no matter what the weather conditions. and this song is a little inclination about what we're talking about. don't want to give it all away. we'll talk about it later. we want to start with this latest round of nasty weather to hit the country. it left two people dead. there was a state of emergency in new jersey one day after nearly 50 degree temperatures

for the super bowl. airline travel should go much smoother today than yesterday. more than 6,000 flights were delayed or canceled because of the storm. arizona governor jan brewer were among those affected by the travel problems. want to bring in nbc meteorologist bill karins to explain this. >> my back still hurts from shoveling snow. >> your back is snow? >> heavy, wet snow. i need a snow blower. a big bad boy. >> we'll get you advil. we have to get you back in, working condition because this weekend we need you. >> yeah. hopefully not this week end be. no matter what, we have this big storm coming in the next two days moving across the country. already start to go blossom here throughout oklahoma and kansas. the white on the map is the snow. this is going to have ice with it, too. watch out oklahoma into northern arkansas, southern missouri with ice today and a lot of freezing rain. as far as how many people, there's like 118 million people that will be affected by this storm. the pink shows you winter storm warnings. the white shows you winter weather advisories. we're going all the way from the

rockies to new england. if you draw a line pretty much from kansas city to boston, that's where the quarter of the heaviest snow will be. that's where i painted the white on the map. that's where the snowstorm is likely. south of that is the icy weather. watch out, unlike the last storm, philadelphia to new york city ice will be a problem. snow totals, highest can be somewhere up there in the cat skills maybe even getting up there to a foot and a half. cities, kansas city, des moines, indianapolis. that's enough to plow and shovel. detroit, oklahoma city watch for ice. early forecast totals for new england, this is a special from albany to boston. that looks like the highest totals. a little less new york city to philadelphia. snow and then ice. >> all right. just when we got rid of it, too. those temperatures over the weekend. >> we could have one coming up this weekend. >> bill, we'll talk to you soon. new jersey governor chris christie is speaking publicly.

he denied having any knowledge. he said he only learned that there was an issue with the bridge after reading a wall street journal article. he was unequivocal in denying he had any involvement. >> i have a responsibility for 8.9 million people and i'll be damned if i'm going to let anything get in the way of me doing my job. i took an oath a couple weeks ago. i had nothing to do with this. no knowledge. no authorization. no planning. nothing to do with this before this decision was made to close these lanes by the port authority. secondly, though i am disappointed by what happened here, i am determined to fix it. i've told people all the time in this job, i can't promise you that we're going to be perfect but what i can promise you is we're going to do our best and when there are mistakes, that we're going to do our best to fix them, and that's what we're in the process of doing. >> now the documents from the

legislature's probe began to come in on monday but bridgette anne kelly's attorney says she won't be offering up any paperwork. she invoked the fifth amendment right. she famously wrote time for some traffic problems in fort lee. there is some political news for the governor. after being snubbed last year, he will speak at cpac this year. the political cost is growing for christie when it can comes to looking ahead at 2016. he trails hillary clinton in a head-to-head match up 55 to 39. last year he led 48 to 46. and the for the gop field at large christie was the main man to beat in november leading by 11 points. when the poll added mike huckabee this time around that looks a lot different with christie falling to the middle.

after having one of the best years, wall street is struggling to find traction in 2014. yesterday the slide continued as the dow fell by more than 300 points. so far it's been the dow's worst year -- worst start to a year since 2011 and that year losing 1.2 trillion since january the 1st. cnbc's jeff cutmore is live in london. explain why we're seeing such a dramatic contraction. >> this is a real head scratcher for the mom and pop investor who's just going back into the markets after the strong year that we had in 2013. the problem is, we had a very weak u.s. manufacturing number for january. in fact, it was the biggest decline in the new order for 33 years. what that all boils down to is markets are nervous anyway over a selloff we've seen in the emerging market space. now it appears that there is some stuttering in growth in the u.s. economy. that's got these man on the

street investors really quite nervous here. what do you do at this point? a lot of the professionals are saying keep your eye open for a correction here, but they believe the growth is real in the u.s. economy at this stage and they say the weaker manufacturing number could just be weather related here. so don't rush out and sell off on just one data point. hold yours for a bit and watch these markets because it does appear after we saw that stronger gdp number for the u.s. economy that there is real growth happening right now after, what, five years off from the global financial crisis. so the professionals saying hold your nerve and keep your eye on these markets. we've opened a little weaker in europe but we'll have to see if the u.s. traders can basically stabilize the ship. as you put it, thomas, a very weak start to the equity markets for january and that's rolled over into the early february session. back to you. >> okay. we'll keep our eyes open for a

mild bounce on this tuesday. jeff, thank you, sir. philip seymour hoffman's autopsy results could come today but the actor's death is exposing the ugly underbelly of the fight against heroin in the united states. more than 70 bags were found at the apartment, 49 of them full. also on hand a powder believed to be cocaine and a number of prescription pills including an addiction treatment drug. health officials warn that heroin's popularity is growing doubling over the last five years. last summer "glee" star cory monteith overdosed pushing it back into the spotlight. you're asking why the resurgence? it's inexpensive. the crackdown has sent many looking for alternatives. unlike prescription drugs, heroin is far from regulated. it's often cut with unknown substances. investigators found baggies marked with ace of spades and ace of hearts. common street brands of drugs are known as these ace types. police are looking at whether

the heroin was tainted. former second lady joan mondale has passed away. described as a traditional political wife, she was known as joan of art. former vice president walter mondale served under jimmy carter from 1977 to 1981. yesterday he released a statement about his wife's passing saying, quote, he is grateful for the expressions of love we received. joan was greatly bofd by many. we will miss her dearly. joan also advocated for equal pay between men and wimp. she is survived by her husband and two sons. joan mondale was 83 years old. for hillary clinton, any chance she'll be hearing the phrase madam president in the near future may rest on one word, inevitability. it's that very idea that could prevent her from returning to the white house. according to buzz feed, several democrats believe his ri is repeating the same mistakes from six years ago. the president's chief campaign

pollster just says i don't see any strategic value in stories positioning her as inevitable or the preemptive nominee. i don't think people out there talking about this help her. i think she should make that clear. his national press secretary for the 2012 campaign added activists and candidates like to see everybody fighting. if they see they're not it could have unforeseen consequences. people are concerned about clinton's potential campaign saying, quote, she doesn't have a compelling rationale for his candidacy. meanwhile, maryland's governor, martin o'malley, has been open about his political aspirations. when it comes to lying, americans are a for giving bunch, a really for giving bunch especially when it comes to former president bill clinton. 43% of bill clinton's supporters said they'd be willing to pardon
