european union. how did her conversation get leaked in the first place? this is "way too early." hi, everybody. good morning. it is february the 7th, a friday, payday friday, casual friday. i'm thomas roberts. welcome to way too early. this is the show where joe biden's latest comments will not be the most offensive thing you hear in the next few minutes. get ready for that one. time has run out to answer whether russia is ready to secure sochi with the game's biggest single event, which is the opening ceremonies. they are tonight. the tsa is banning most aerosols, gels, liquids and powders of any size on u.s. air carriers en route to russia. this comes based on a warning. russian leaders have tried to alay the fears, saying the threat is no worse than that of new york, washington or boston. the games are already the

world's most expensive and most heavily secured. >> i think the russians have an enormous stake in preventing any kind of terrorist act or violence at these venues and they have put a lot of resources into it. we are in constant communications with them both at the law enforcement level, at the military level, at the intelligence levels. >> we've told you the hotel horror stories that many journalists have been experiencing while checking in to the games. pictures like this depicting less than acceptable accommodations. the russian government is pushing back saying that some westerners are deliberately trying to smear russia's image. his proof, we have surveillance video from the hotels that show people turn on the shower, drek the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for a whole day. an aide pulled away reporters before they could ask a question

about that hotel surveillance. they are watching you. still, many are far from impressed by russia's stance on a host of civil rights issues at the games open. google changed its doodle to a tribute of the games showing athletes bobsledding and curling ses on a rainbow background including principle 6, which is part of the olympic charter. the practice of sport is a human right. every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind. many are reading this is a shot of russia's intolerance of gay propaganda. a top diplomate has been caught on tape using salty language over the political situation in ukraine. they first reported the conversation between victoria noland and jeffrey bassett. they were discussing the political leadership and that's when n o ulanuland made the

controversial remarks. >> you can be pretty sure if it does start to gain altitude, the russians will be working behind the scenes to try to torpedo it. >> this audio was posted anonymously on youtube. they did not deny the tape's authenticity and almost immediately suspected that moscow had a role for leaking that tape. certainly, we think this is a new low in russian tradekraft in terms of publicizing and posting this. i don't have any other independent details about the origin of the youtube video. he reportedly called eu officials and apologized for the remarks. the republican leadership a week ago seemed optimistic about immigration reform. it stalled during the last session of congress. >> this problem has been around for 15 years and turned into a

political football. i think it is unfair. i think it is time to deal with. how we deal with it is going to be critically important. it is one thing to pass a law and the other thing to have the confidence of the american people behind the law as you are passing it. >> seven days later, a reversal of expectations led by speaker, john boehner, himself. >> i never underestimated the difficulty in moving forward this year. frankly, one of the biggest obstacles we face is the one of trust. the american people, including many of my members, don't trust that the reform that we are talking about, will be implemented as it was intended. the president seems to change the health care law on a whim whenever he likes. there is widespread doubt about whether this administration can be trusted to enforce our laws. it is going to be difficult to move any immigration legislation until that changes. >> some democrats have said they are not discouraged by boehner's

comments. senators like mitch mcconnell and jeff sessions says the divide is simply too wide. lindsey graham has said, there has been a chilling effect from the health care law about getting high-profile projects past. senators still can't reach a deal to help the long-term unemployed in this country. the latest attempt to extend emergency benefits failed. democrats fell one vote shy of the 60 needed. four republicans supported that plan, which would cost more than $6 billion and the cost would have been offset elsewhere. republicans still objected because they couldn't offer amendments. harry reid says it is clear, republicans just want to say no. >> we've given them everything they wanted, paid for it. no one could question that. they can't take yes for an answer. senator murray says, procedurally this and that is gobblely gook to the american people. >> 1.7 million americans have lost unemployment benefits since the start of the year. officials in two states say they

are scrambling to invest major environment tol concerns. tons of toxic ash poured into the dan river. workers were rushing to repair that leak and to determine if the chemicals pose a health danger. led, arsonic and mur are known to be in the water. students and staff complained of feeling light headed and itchy. schools are expected to reopen today after a series of tests listen to this one. the girl scouts are facing a bit of a cookie controversy. anti-abortion rights are calling for a boycott of thin mints, samoas and other treats. they say they boycott for the girl scouts praise for wendy davis and kathleen sebelius.

the girl scout's spokesperson says the praise was meant to highlight female leaders. she said it was preposterous anybody would boycott the girl scouts for political reasons we move on and pay attention to business. an improving labor market was enough to give investors confidence to boost wall street. the dow posted its best day of the year. steve sedgwick is live in london. what a difference a week can make. >> reporter: isn't it extraordinary. a degree of composure back into the markets after the jobs claims were much better. the payroll report we had for december back last month, which was so disappointing. this time around, we have a payroll figure today and coming into that, as you say, the markets are very excited. dow was up 188, the s&p, up 22. a lot of focus on that payroll figure later today. >> the 30-year anniversary of apple we just celebrated. they are buying back billions worth of stock as a result of

the disappointing first quarter. explain this. >> the group has always said, we are going to return $100 billion to investors via special measures. a lot of investors, including carl icahn, who has been buying apple stock as it comes down. we have taken a vote on february 28th. the most recent data was taken badly by the market, disappointing sales. tim cook bought $14 billion of apple stock, some saying somewhat opportunistic. >> steve senlgdgwick, have a go weekend jay leno hosted his last "tonight show." he said, one thing stood out. >> the most fun is all the politicians we have had fun with over the years. here is some of my favorite

even though the opening ceremonies have yet to begin, the olympic ceremonies have. joining us from sochi, our willie geist. as the godfather of "way too early," i want to start with fun, fashion, sun and your toilet. let's start with your toilet. how is it? >> reporter: that's so personal. my toilet is fine. i have read all the tweets. yes, there are problems. yes, people have tried to check into their hotels and been turned away because their rooms have not yet been constructed. that's all true. at this point, the vast majority of pretty happy with where they are. i have water that is clear. my shower works. my toilet is fantastic. there is only one of them in the bathroom, not those two side by sides. some of that is definitely overblown. >> we just showed a picture you had tweeted earlier about sem a sympathizing with horror stories in sochi. the chandelier hasn't been

cleaned in days. you don't look like you are at winter games. it looks beautiful and bright and sunny. >> reporter: i have to be honest with you. the thermometer says about 52 fahrenheit right now but we are out here in the sun. it has to be in the 60s. the sun is out. i had a coat on. i took that off. all i have on is a shirt and sweater and i don't mind if i do. a little summer games action here. up in the mountains, it is cold. you get the snow and everything is going to be fine up there tichlts not going to affect the games. this is a coastal town. we have coastal weather, at least today. the opening ceremony in the fish stadium right behind me came at a cost of $600 million. russia poured $51 billion into these games. the flag bearer for the united states, a guy named todd ludwick, who the nordic combined. . this is his sixth winter

olympics. his third was in lilly heimer. he will lead the americans into what is sure to be a massive, expensive spectacle from the russians. the games have started. i was watching earlier, slope styles and pairs and men's individual skating. >> yesterday, the slope style started. a lot of people were talking about shaun white. he withdrew from that event. some other people have risen to the top in that. we also had a bit of a slow day for the americans, shall we put it, in another event. this is this new team figure skating event where you have pairs, a man and a woman. in total, six skaters. jeremy abbott, the american, took a spill yesterday and that dropped the americans into fifth place. they have a long climb back if they want a metal. some people you want to look at, a guy named bode miller. these are his fifth winter olympics.

the cold air really bad in the middle of the country. the east coast, it is cold but not as bad as it is the rest of the week. how about that big snow event for the east coast? there is the snowfall prediction. nice. don't expect much of anything. maybe some snow showers. the big story is the west coast. they are going to get drenched. they are loving it. they are doing the irish jig down the streets of san francisco. for areas of northern california, the mountains are going to get nailed with heavy snow. we're talking a couple days worth of snow here. this is exactly what the west needed. it is not going to end the drought but it is going to actually be enough to make a significant impact, specially in the short-term. places thinking of running out of water. >> i think you have your gift from wednesday, national weather person's day. this is a rodent redemption. come on, rodent.
