were stuck. in northern california, much-needed heavy rains have become treacherous, causing this road to fall apart and plunge down a ravine. major flooding and rock and mudslides, leading to road closures. in the south, it's time to buckle down again with two winter storms on the way. rock salt is selling out in hardware stores across the area. residents trying to better prepare since the snowstorm crippled the area and the highways there, leaving thousands stranded two weeks ago. remember those pictures? bill karins remembers those. >> they're planning on treating the roads today, this afternoon. >> after that last situation with pr. >> yeah. i mean, yeah, they're going to overdo it this time. better safe than sorry. here is where we're sitting. all the big storm this is weekend, northern california had the rain, oregon got pummeled with the snow. this is a very fast weather pattern moving across the country, recipe for one big storm as we go through wednesday

into thursday. we did pick up as much as -- almost half an inch of rainfall in oregon as we went through the weekend, mixed with the snow. california picked up two to four inches. even kirkwood picked up seven feet of snow. more heavy rain headed to the pacific northwest this week. the story for the east coast, cold air is on the way. it's moving in now that. will set the stage for that storm to come off the gulf. here is one of our computers, the european model we call this one. snowfall prediction. it starts wednesday with snow in northern georgia, south carolina. it produces a swath of plowable snow here thursday all the way up through new england. that's the possibility of a high-impact travel event. it looks like wednesday night, all day thursday for the east coast. that's the potential for -- we haven't had many snow storms go all the way up the east coast. this has the potential to do that. >> south to north and then you've got some sprinkles out west, which they've been waiting for. >> they need the rain. that's a good thing. >> yeah, it is. there are calls for compromise when it comes to the heated timeline on immigration

reform. new york senator chuck schumer on nbc's "meet the press" saying it's a possibility this year, specifically calling out republicans, including speaker of the house john boehner and house majority leader mitch mcconnell. >> they have said they want to do immigration reform but they don't trust the president to enforce the law, particularly the enforcement parts. so there's a simple solution. let's enact the law this year, but simply not let it actually start till 2017, after president obama's term is over. >> would republicans accept schumer's idea? >> i think some republicans would be interested in that if we put in place the enforcement measure so that it would work. be sure the border is secure, have a workforce program that works. >> the debate spanning from politics, of course, to economic impact. >> when, in the lives of our children and grandchildren there are 500 million americans and they're all going to be working, because we're going to have

economic dynamism aided by immigration. >> they are going to, however -- it leads to why have borders at all? why have a border? if it's just as people as widgets who come in and are workers without concern about asimulati assimilation or how it asks people in the mid america. a tour bus crash in pennsylvania injured nearly 30 people, state police saying the driver lost control of the tour bus and crashed into an embankment sunday afternoon. 26 of the 33 passengers were taken to nearby hospitals with nonlife threatening injuries. according to police, the driver was going far too fast in the snowy conditions. two horrific wrong-way car crashes to tell you about that left 11 people dead on sunday, the first occurring sunday morning in california when a 21-year-old woman slammed her car head on into an suv, killing six people. the woman was reportedly traveling more than 100 miles an

hour in the wrong direction. she's in serious, but stable condition and has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and felony manslaughter. in florida, suv traveling south on a northbound lane crashing into a car carrying four fraternity brothers. four men and the driver of the suv died at the scene. investigators do not yet know if drugs or alcohol were involved there. let's shift now to sports this hour. veronica de la cruz joins us now. you have news of a potential history maker. >> a real game changer, top rated nfl prospect, missouri defensive lineman has announced he is gay. he is expected to be chosen early in the nfl draft. he would be the first openly gay player in nfl history, richard. sam, who led in sacks and tackles came out because he w t

potentially runs for 2016. the author has some significant access to her aides and advisers. that's saying that the clinton camp knows that these stories are going to come out and need to get their own spin on things. the reporter didn't pull any punches and there's a lot of points in the book. >> what did you find interesting? there's the one we just discussed about bill tampering with her speech and she's saying hold on a second. don't touch my speech. then a development in the book that says the staffs of both her, the secretary of state, as well as the president, they didn't trust each other early on. >> absolutely. i think that was pretty clear as they were running for office. obviously, this team of equals. in the book it talks about she kept saying no about his author to be secretary of state so often he was ducking her phone calls. i think that shows what we knew early on, that the president really trusted her wisdom. they grew to have a good working relationship and she had very high marks in the public's view. i think we've seen as inevitable once she's out of office, she fades, the public starts to sort

of forget and ratings go down. it's part of keeping her relevant. >> lots of those copies, both of those authors. senator chuck schumer suggesting pass the house immigration reform legislation or something like that, but then let it take effect after the president, president obama and his administration ends. now what do you make of that? >> well, i think it's something that we understand from schumer that they came up with. they hadn't really run that past any of their colleagues or anybody in the house and already the house is saying this wouldn't work. how would you have this bill sort of take effect -- that would give the administration even less interest in enforcing current laws. the administration said no, we've deported more people than anybody. and they put criticism on the left for that. schumer is really -- he is one of the architects of the senate bill, really wants to find a plan. i think it's interesting. the white house is taking a bit of a measured approach. i think the white house thinks that john boehner might still put something forward later this year. we're not going to come out and
