michelle obama tweeted her support writing, quote, you're an inspiration to all of us. we couldn't be prouder of your courage both on and off the field. the support has been widespread, there are still many within the sports world questioning what this could mean for his career going forward. sam is a first team all-american, defensive player of the year in the s.e.c., widely considered one of the top players in all of college football, and in other words, he's a big deal. "sports illustrated" talked to eight anonymous nfl executives and coaches who suggested his path to the league will be daunting. one went so far as to say, i don't think football is ready for an openly gay player just yet. in the coming decade or two, it's acceptable but at this point in time, it's still a man's game, to call somebody a gay slur is still commonplace, it chemically inbalance an nfl locker room and meeting room.

room. if you knowingly bring someone in there with that sexual orientation, how are the other guys going to deal with it? it's a big distraction. that's the reality, it shouldn't be, but it will be. is that the reality inside most nfl locker rooms. >> look, you'll have some people who will say some things and is it a closely knit group, we saw what happened with richie incognito last year. some people were kind of supportish of richie and some people didn't in the things he said. we're not able to let obviously mike sam is not going to let, and the nfl is not going to let, a few people who are ignorant and afraid dictate what happens here. if i'm a team owner, team president, i'm telling everybody draft this guy, where you think he should go based on the football ability and bring him into the locker room and see what happens. if there's a brouhaha, there is, but you've got to think bigger and better. >> you've got to. you've got to wonder, again, you

know nfl locker rooms, are there general managers, owners picking up the phone and saying, listen, this is probably what we want to stay away from because of the media, because of all of the attention that this is going to bring on to our organization? >> i think if you have a less stable organization, something you might do. i understand that it will bring a lot of media circus around. this can't be -- this can't get in your way. there's no way it can. craig, there's 1700 nfl players playing in any given moment. are we going to think that michael sam is the only gay man in the nfl? come on. >> do you think this is something that starts i wave of sorts in the nfl? now that this happened, will you have other players, active players, players about to get drafted come forward and say, you know what, i'm gay as well? >> we thought it might happen after jason collins came out to "sports illustrated" early last year, and it didn't follow

immediately. i think you know this is such an intensely personal decision, right? people have to decide twla they want to do, whether it's a big deal to other people or not, it's still a big deal to each individual. so i think that's going to play. it's hard to predict what people want to do. >> last question, does this have any affect at all on where he goes in the draft? again, for folks who don't follow college football, they may not realize, we're not talking about mediocre college football player. this guy, one of the best defensive players in the entire sport, best in the s.e.c., projected to go as high as third round. is that where we project him to go? >> most people say perhaps a fourth rounder. there are football issues, small for defensive end, not sure how he'll play at linebacker there are issues, football issues and those people -- i don't think anybody should overvalue him because of what he said. we'll see, if he doesn't get drafted there's something really wrong. whether he goes in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth round,

we'll see. >> to politics, a congressional hearing led by senator joe manchin sought answered about the chemical leak that contaminated drinking water for hundreds of thousands last month. there alingering concerns by residents that the water around charleston, west virginia, may not be safe to drink. this, despite repeated assurances by state and federal officials there is no threat but last week, five charleston area schools temporarily closed because the water smelled like licori licorice, associated with the chemical mthm. one teacher fainted, several students claimed burning sensations in their nose and eyes. residents don't believe the water's safe. >> i'm not drinking the water. my wife is not drinking the water. none of my neighbors trust the water. >> when will we stop smelling the water? when will we hear the chemical

officials discovered a chemical leaking into the river. >> what else kale out of the hearing? >> a couple of interesting revelations from the safety board. they said that they were able to determine there are two holes in the tank. it looks like one hole's 19 millimeters and the other hole's 10 millimeters. we've heard before there was one one-inch sized hole, it's about the same. we also heard there was a private inspection of the tanks, hired by freedom industries, the company who owns the tanks, a private inspector came in october 2013 and looked at the tanks. since the materials housed within the tanks aren't considered hazardous enough, there aren't the right regulations in place to enforce the standards they were using in looking at tanks. that highlights potential regulatory issues involved in above-ground storage tanks or chemicals in general. >> dave boucher, keeping us up to speed in west virginia. keep us posted, sir. developing now, down south,

georgia officials are taking no chances this time, as a nasty mix of winter weather takes aim at the south. the latest on that. state of emergency operation center opens in less than an hour for officials to monitor conditions. earlier today, nathan deal declared a state of emergency for 45 counties, atlanta public schools have announced they'll be closed tomorrow and wednesday as well. this was the scene just about two weeks ago. you remember this, a snowstorm left thousands of vehicles gridlocked along atlanta area highways. right now, two winter weather watches up for north georgia which snow beginning tonight, possibly turning to isolate tomorrow. governor diehl and mayor kasim reed, both blasted for their response to the first storm, gave specific details about the preparations this time. >> typically, the city has 25

spreaders. we now have agreements in place for 35 contractors which gives us 60 spreaders. we also have 40 snowplows, expanding that capability by 20 snowpl snowplows. that will give us 115 to 120 pieces of equipment. >> please use your own best judgment. do not put yourself or your family in jeopardy. the clearer the roads are, the more we have the able to treat those roads and get them open as quickly as possible. >> weather channel meteorologist paul good low standing by for us in atlanta. paul, does it sound like they prepared enough for what's coming? >> i think it's overkill early on but definitely they need to be prepared for perhaps a devastating ice storm across the area. all of the ingredients in place. we have cold air coming back across the south, though many cities are in the 60s yesterday, talking much colder today. cold air continues to come in

overnight, into tuesday and wednesday, and moisture overrunning that, and that's the big concern. if you have 4, 5 inches of snow we could get around. it's the ice underneath the snow, that's the problem, and this could be a significant ice event for the south. nobody, i don't care whether you have four-wheel drive, a thank have difficult time driving. we'll have cold air at the surface, bridges, roads, car windshield sits below freezing, we have rain on top of that, coming on the warm layer, so you have the water, rain freeze on contact with trees, power lines, that's the biggest concern. big timing for this, on wednesday into thursday. closing schools tomorrow might be a little overkill, but after what happened a couple weeks ago, they're taking every precaution. today, we're not seeing a lot. a lit towards western carolina. but tomorrow, pink, freezing rain, ice, and that continues into wednesday as well.

in florida. now it's up to dunn's attorney to present his case. a live look inside the courtroom where the defense has started calling its first witnesses, including qu include acquaintances of dunn's and dunn himself. dunn may end up taking the stand later today. if that happens during our hour, we'll bring it live. a fourth day of testimony. this is the first day. shown images of jordan davis' lifeless body with bullet wounds. prosecutors tried to prove the shooting was pre meditameditate requirement for first-degree murder conviction, they called more key witnesses to the stand, including dna expert, crime lab analyst, and a medical examiner who conducted the autopsy on jordan davis' body. through her testimony, stacey simons described what she believed jordan davis' position was when he was fatally shot. >> if you notice now, as i start to bend over, the track becomes

horizontal, and so that path in the liver and the path of the injury helps us establish that jordan davis was most likely bending over in a position similar to this. >> when you say bending over, you're leaning to your left -- >> leaning -- >> go ahead, i'm sorry. >> yes, leaning to my left, possibly forward. >> the crime lab analyst also testified about the steps dunn took before firing his weapon. dunn maintains that he fired that weapon in self-defor instance. criminal defense attorney john burriss joins me live now. john, first of all, are you at all surprised that the state rested its case today? >> no, i'm not. i think what's important for the prosecution to put on the cause of death and also to establish the angle in which the bullet may have gone into the body, because this will demonstrate that he was not getting out of the car, not in an erect position, he was in a seated position lean, trying to get away from where the shot was.

that was an important aspect. secondly, no blood. there's no alcohol. there's no drugs. those are critically important. what the prosecution has not done is put on dunn's statement itself. and that's really designed to have dunn testify if he wants to, i'm sure the defense doesn't want that to happen but though they may say they do, they don't want the defendant to have to testify because he's going to be quite vulnerable to flight and other questions. i'm not surprised. i think the prosecution put on a short, crisp case, right to the facts establishing the shooting, establishing, et cetera. >> i want to play more of the medical examiner's testimony. the medical examiner presenting to the jury precisely how the bullet went through jordan davis' body. take a listen. >> you have to think of it in terms of possibly one shot and then another shot and then another shot with the body changing position. >> john, how important is that testimony from the medical

examiner to the state's case. >> it shows the body was move, reacting to the shots themselves. the most important things he was not out of the car, he was not in a standing position, and so from the prosecution's point of view, this is important testimony to offset what the defendant had -- wants to claim that he was getting out of the car. >> the state forensic analyst also took the stand this morning, said that dunn would have had to remove his gun from the holster, then load it before the shooting, why is that significant? >> that's important, obviously, because those are direct acts he had to take. it's a question that he did what he intended to do what he did, he had to load the gun, pull the gun out and then shoot. those are deliberate acts on his part. it's not an accidental thing, it wasn't something that happened at spur of the moment. he had to deliberately know this. importantly, he reacted as a consequence of a statement being made. when he, himself, made a statement, these are deliberate acts. i don't know if they go to

first-degree murder but they do go to second-degree. >> could it have been deliberate and not premeditated? >> it could be deliberate. obviously the acts that he engaged in were deliberate acts he had to pull the gun out of the glove compartment, load the gun, those are deliberate. premeditation is a reflection, you thought about it, it's not to say it didn't happen in the case, but given the circumstances it's more likely it's deliberate and second degree. >> again, while you were speaking, showing our viewers at home jordan davis' father right there, jordan davis' father, who is on the stand, he's been called by the defense. i want to bring in cheryl anderson, a close friend of jordan davis' parents. she has been inside that courtroom with the family during the course of the trial. thanks for joining us, cheryl. i understand that jordan's parents were not inside the courtroom when the images of his body were shown. can you give us a sense at all of how difficult some of this testimony has been to hear for them?

>> it is difficult. but it's necessary. they are two of the strongest people that i know. their fifth and their love for jordan is what is sustaining them through this. this weekend is, as you know, dunn's fiancee testified and this is just a part of what was said, the fiancee testified that he said he didn't like thug music. what is the reaction to hearing that testimony? >> my reaction to that testim y testimony, that's -- that's a difficult one for me. i can't, as far as thug music is concerned, as a lover of all music, that's -- that was kind of difficult to hear for me along that line. we just -- that's just really a tough one. everyone has their own particular choices in music and -- >> sure. >> they were having a great time

with what they were playing and they were -- it's just a joyful time for them. for someone else to interpret it as thug music was a little bit rough to hear. >> once the trial is over, what do you and the family want to see happen, as far as that state's laws? >> well, we -- lucy and i are working dill gently on seeing stand the ground laws, working on seeing stand your ground laws repealed. here in florida, nearly 20% of those killed, of the victims of the stand your ground law are children and teenagers. the mo moms here in florida, we working together and working to see a change in that. we're hoping to get legislators to pay attention and to make some changes. >> thank you for your time. appreciate it. still ahead, a new round of subpoenas have just been issued in the widening chris christie bridge investigation. the first read on that.

controversial comments made by aol ceo, a new personal apology to a family he suggested was one of the reasons that he changed the company benefit. tim armstrong told employees last week he was changing the 401(k) contributions because in addition to rising cost of health care, the company had to may $1 million each for what he called two distressed babies, born to staffers. within hours comments went viral, by saturday, armstrong reversed that policy. now learning armstrong called the mom of one of the babies last night. deanna's husband worked for aol. their daughter, mila was born more than three months premature. they were told that the baby had a 1 in 3 chance of surviving. live here with us in the studio. thanks for coming by. first of all, what did armstrong say when he called you last night? >> well, i don't want to get into the exact words that he used because i feel like he

really spoke to me as an individual, not in his public role as ceo, he spoke to me ace father of three, fellow parent and someone who had read my piece about what the whole experience had been like for my family and i think, you know, he expressed his regret in a heartfelt manner. he -- he assure immediate that he never meant to hurt my family. >> yeah. >> and i -- i take him for his word. i accepted his apology. and i think we can all agree that we've all said things that we wish we could take back. >> a note here, in an e-mail to the company on saturday, armstrong did write in part, quote, i made a mistake, and i appall guide for my comments last week at a town hall when i mentioned specific health care examples in trying to explain our decision making process. going forward, what do you hope happens? what do you hope comes from this? >> i hope that we can have a

little bit more understanding of what it's like to be a parent of a so-called distressed baby, which i think was a label that at lift feast for me was painfu see in news headlines, to know everything that my daughter had been through, to have, you know, visited every day for three months in the hospital, to have care for her all of these months since she came home, and to suddenly hear her reduced to this distressed baby who was a drain on the company's bottom line. so it's my hope that we can have more understanding of, you know, the fact that for parents of these, you know, babies who are born with serious health issues, it's a really helpless feeling, you know, to have to entrust the care of your baby around the clock to medical professionals, you feel like there's not much you can do. also the fact that we are the last people to take health care spending more granted. you know, i mean it's more than a year since my baby came home.

i'm dealing with insurance companies and, you know, these dollars and cents are not abstract for me. but that doesn't mean that we deserve to get called out if somehow the problem here, you know, the reason why the ceo had to make the decision to cut somewhere else. and i also think that, you know, it's important, of course, in terms of national policy to have conversations about health care expenditures and especially in a country where tens of millions of people have no insurance at all and we were fortunate to be insured. but -- but i think that, you know, in this situation, you know, i mean, of course, i don't have answers. i think that medical ethicists can debate the appropriateness of care for extreme preemies. but in this context, you know, that wasn't the situation. we're talking about a publicly

a new round of subpoenas expected in the scandal surrounding chris christie. as many as a dozen more will report lid come out of a new jersey special committee investigating the scandal. meanwhile, christie aides have told politico the governor was not shown the memo attacking david wildstein before it was released last week. wildstein ordered the closings last month. nbc news deputy political editor joins me now. the memo included several references to wildstein's past. appeared to be an attempt to discredit him. hoy lighted incidents dating pack to high school which struck a lot of folks as odd. how is it possible, after all that's happened, christie's people never ran that memo by him before releasing it? >> i don't know the details of what happened behind the scene there you take them at their word, though, and it's still a
