major headache. more than 3,000 flights were delayed and about 1200 canceled nationwide on monday. this storm is just the latest in what has been a brutal winter with new york city getting 38 inches more snow than normal. nbc's bill karins is here with more on what we are expecting this time around. >> the timing is an issue, but the storm itself is not going to be a huge ordeal. especially compared to all the big storms we've already had. you can see it's been spinning over the top of lake erie, really windy conditions. probably the worst of from cleveland just north of pittsburgh, a little blast of snow that already went through philadelphia in the tren top area and now heading for new york city. temperatures plenty cold enough in new england. 32 in d.c., so anywhere north and west of d.c., snow covered roads. pittsburgh, we're at 34. as far as the snow goes, we are going to expect the worst of it up here from about northern mass to southern new hampshire and near portland area.

that's where we have winter storm warnings. whites a couple spots of winter weather advisories, so lower he said snow totals. you can see the snow starting to move towards the new york city area and it will be right through new york as we go throughout the next two hours or so. and we've already seen a lot of the snow pass through baltimore and d.c., but probably shouldn't see much more as we go throughout the day. so as far as the forecast totals go, again, just a quick shot this morning. and then the afternoon hours, much warmer and all the roads will metal. problem area interior central and northern new england. but 1 to 2 inches, that is nothing. that is like a sneeze. >> nothing compared to what we've been through. >> it's just the timing. but 40 later in the day. >> bring on that 40 degrees. thank you, bill. a shocking new u.n. report discovers systemic abuses in north korea. a u.n. official compares kim jong-un to a modern day hitler. andrea mitchell has the details.

today? >> reporter: i would love to say it is, but i would be lying to you. we've had some rain down here in the coastal cluster. take a live look and you can see heavy fog in the mountain, really just socking in the entire resort there. it's something they have been dweeling wi ing dealing with the last couple of days. let's pull away from the mountain and look in, you can see it on a wider scale and see the fog that again is just pretty much encompassing the entire mountain region. what is it doing to the competitors and what are they trying to do to maybe eliminate some of the fog? well, let's take a look at this twitter picture that comes from alex, a cross competitor. he tweeted out a picture of fans trying to blow the fog out of the area. he said that it wasn't that effective, but they are trying to do whatever they can to keep the games going. if you're waiting to watch prime

time to take a bite there your morning dish of scrambled politics. mashing the fifth anniversary of the $787 billion economic stimulus, remember that? yeah, president obama signed the bill on february 17th, 2009. the white house is on the defensive now after a barrage of criticism from republicans saying in part, quote, the economy has now grown for 11 straight quarters and businesses have added $8.5 million jobs since early 2010. but hold up, senate nine ority leader mitch mcconnell is not convinced. writing in a reuters op-ed, he says five years later, the stimulus is no success to celebrate. it is a tragedy to lament. and february 2009 the, unemployment was at 8.3%. now it's at 6.6%. and the new gallup poll finds

almost one in four say unemployment is the top problem. can government and politicians had topped that list since the government shutdown in october. so could a gay marriage ban be on its way to indiana? the state senate approved a constitutional amendment monday. 32-17. it follows the house's approval last month. both chambers must approve the measure again in the next legislative session before it can go to voters in 2016. history is on its way to south carolina according to the state. a record 7 african-american candidates are running for statewide office this year. south carolina is poised to elect its first black candidate t to statewide office since 1872 #. a whopping new yorker of new yorkers support legalizing medical marijuana. learn more about what it means on msnbc.com. and this, former president clinton poking fun on

right? and we have republicans really coming out saying this is a great tragedy. one in four americans as we reported say unemployment is number one on their list. so is this a success for the obama administration or is this as the republicans are calling it a real tragedy? >> it's painfully slow. let's be honest. we've had a recovery, all the numbers say it continues. but we don't have very long attention spans in this country, especially if you're not working. and it's not really that the numbers are so shockingly high. it's that we have a new kind of unemploy unemployed. people who are out of work for months and months and months and some fear they may never work again. so it is a political rproblem. >> and some folks won't get long term benefits. >> you're right. an think for td i think for the in modern american history, middle class folks can say that could be me. that won't just be the loser down the block or the guy who
