second run he crashed, but that 92 was good enough to hold up for a gold medal. many of his competitors fell because the snow was very wet and there have been complaint all throughout these games of the condition of the halfpipe, and i can tell you it didn't get any better tonight. >> how about on the women's side? the american mikaela shiffrin with a somewhat digs appointing fifth in her debut in the games in the giant slalom. what's next for her? >> well, she runs in her best race. that's the slat okay, and that will happen on friday, but she did come in fifth, you know, the weather played a big role in the women's giant slalom. snowing heavily at the top of the course, and at the bottom of the course it was more of a snow-rain mixture, and julie mancuso, another great medal hope for the u.s., she actually skid out of first run and did not finish that race, so for the

u.s. women it was a disappointing day. >> some news from sochi off the mountain now from earlier today. two members of the female band pussyriot temporarily detained with their group for what russian authorities said was questioning in a theft at their hotel. there's a selfie. here's a selfie that they took while they were being held right after they were released there. what more do we know about the circumstances that led up to that? >> reporter: well, the members of that group, craig, say that this was the culmination of three days of police harassment, and they say they were detained, both on sunday and monday, and today they were finally released today. no charges were filed. as for what exactly that claim of theft was at their hotel we're not sure. we do know that this rock group, as you'll recall, the members were jailed for hooliganism in moscow, but then they were released in december as sort of

testimony. the question becomes what next? what now? >> the u.n. report is so specific. so well documented that now it's been put in front of the world. china is most likely as north korea's diplomatic protector, china is most likely going to veto any action to turn it over to the world court, to the international criminal court for action against the north koreans. the hundreds of people in the regime who could be held responsible for this if they could be brought to justice. so that said, what can be done? there's going to be a period in geneva. they will have a prominent defector, a military man who will testify as well. and that can then be brought to the general assembly where china does not have a veto and the world opinion can be valleyed. it too, can be wrestled for

taking defector. >> despite the report saying that the regime has killed hundreds of thousands since the 1950s, despite the pictures that survivors drew detailing the suffering, the pictures if you haven't seen the report, some of the pictures are extremely graphic and jarring. the report stopped short of using the word genocide. >> in some instances they did. it's a very lengthy report. they did use the word genocide. they're talking about atrocities that are the worst atrocities that we have seen in any contemporary context that parallel anything that we have seen in history. so they are saying this is analogous to what was done by the worst regimes including the nazis. >> let's switch topics.

john kerry has been in the middle east a lot. this is how he attacked russia. take a look. >> russia needs to be a part of the solution and not be contributing so many more weapons and so much more aid that they're enabling us to double down, which is creating an enormous problem. >> we have very few options now. decided not to use air strikes. senior white house officials have been criticizing russia overtly. kerry's whole legacy is tied up. russia is sake player.

and to do this is to say that they are basically blaming russia for the disaster that is assad, and some would argue that this is a very dangerous policy because it's using rhetoric to blame russia. but we need russia on a lot of other issues, what more can you tell us about what you are seeing unfold in the streets of ukraine? >> this looks like another revolution. this is really esskalating rapidly. foreigners are being told to stay inside and americans are being told to be very, very

careful. >> while you're talking here, we have got some live pictures here. these are live pictures that we're just getting up front. you can see that the flames there, and again the death toll right now we were told that we can expect the number to go up as well. how does this play out? >> remember that the top official for europe, newland, was overheard talking about how -- which one of the rebel leaders to support and we believe the u.s. government certainly believes that that conversation was not only overheard, intercepted, but leaked by the russians to say stay out of this. this is not an american affair.

also took a moment to talk about the progress that the country has made in the five years since he signed that bill. >> we spent the past five years fighting our way back from the worst recessions of our lifetimes. now the economy is growing. bidses created over 8.5 million new jobs over the past four years. the unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in over five years. >> the power panel is here. i do want to talk about news. the non-partisan congressional budget office reporting that raising the minimum wage to 10, $10 an hour would cost half a million jobs by 2016.

did the cbo kill a minimum wage hike? >> i don't think it did. the report says that about 500,000 jobs would be lost by 2016 but 16 million workers will see their pay go up. >> i think that support will not be diminished that much. >> five years since the stimulus bill was signed. . you heard the president there touting the success you also have this statement. little results here. families are still asking where are the jobs? >> i think it's a little too

early to say. i think it is somewhere in between. republicans have gone on to the negative reports of this. the fact that remains, what does the president tout when they succeeded in passing the bill. there is nothing else left to spend. and look, we have seen some growth. i would absolutely submit that joe biden a few years a go.

>> president obama's reelection shows that at least as a political issue, it's kind of off the table. to some extent it has been replaced by bam caobamacare. i think that the public opinion battle at least moved to the back burner while the battle over obama care has risen to the fro front. >> let's talk about 2014. some statements coming out of the gop seem to suggest that they have effectively given up on any major legislation for the rest of the year. what else are we going to do? we can work on our principles but in terms of real legislating we are unable to get in a good

negotiating position. it would seem like mid february would be a little early. >> i was shocked by the frankness of these statements. i knew they were not going to do a lot. that said, to declare in february, not july, february, we're not doing anything the rest of the year was surprising. automaltically said that it's an issue. this is is a do-nothing congress for a long time. there was a very surprising and not very smart political tech i thought there. >> really quickly. billionaire democratic owner is going to be spending as much as $100 million on candidates who are willing to work towards climate change measures.

they will be targeted using the mix of traditional tool box techniques. in the primaries, though, when you have these huge donors willing to write massive checks or candidates, that's where you have the potential to move the parties. the fact that tom is going after potentially democrats as well on climate change, including louisiana senator mary landrieu . in fact, it may help her eventful republican opponent. these are risky moves being made by some of the big donors. but these moves are here to stay. they are just a new reality.
