tv   The Ed Show  MSNBC  February 18, 2014 2:00pm-3:01pm PST

2:00 pm
good evening, americans, and welcome to "the ed show" live from new york. let's get to work. >> i'm not a billionaire. >> i said multimillion. >> a minority who live a lifestyle that the 99% could not imagine. >> the 1%. >> the 1% are not causing the inequality. they are the job creators. >> job creators in america. >> the government itself is the problem. >> government is the problem. >> let the rich do what the rich do. >> give the private sector the opportunity to do what it does best. >> do what the rich do, which is get richer, but along the way
2:01 pm
they bring everybody else with them. good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. we have talked about trust. tonight i want to use a different word. arrogance. if you're going to be arrogant, don't go halfway, let them have it. be arrogant. sometimes charts show us arrogance. i want to begin tonight with a few charts. we have some new information out there. this chart should be very familiar to you. it's the vulture chart. since the early 1980s, income for the top 1%, it's gone through the roof. everyone else's wages have flat lined, the middle class and below. tonight we have a new vulture's chart and it ain't pretty. i've been waiting for this one for a long time. these two lines at the bottom are the old vulture chart.
2:02 pm
the bottom line is the middle class wages and the middle line is the top 1%. wait a minute. the green line is the top .01%. holy smokes! the ultra rich in this country, they are really doing better. better than ever in fact. actions, i believe, need to be taken against the wealthiest americans, tax them even more, to get our treasury in place. and we need to stop the transpacific partnership because if this happens, this chart right here, it's only going to get worse. no one is going to be hurt at the top 1% if we make a revenue adjustment. if the tpp passes, it is going to send good american jobs to places like vietnam and other countries. now the facts on trade deals, there's no question about it, they are krystal clear. this is what the tpp is going to
2:03 pm
do. these are the countries involved. every time one of these trade deals passes -- you can use nafta as an example -- we lose jobs. not a single trade deal has ever taken place has benefitted us into the positive for american jobs. it's almost as if politicians and elected officials are afraid to say that because they might to be targeted. the tpp would be great for the top 1%. big banks and corporations could maximize profits by producing cheaper goods overseas where there are no labor standards or environmental standards for that matter. today a new report shows a disturbing connection between u.s. trade representatives, the people who are doing the deals, and the big banks. reported u.s. trade representatives have received massive payouts from banks, the
2:04 pm
big banks. michael froman, he is the current u.s. trade representative working on the tpp. he is a former manager director at citigroup. he received over $4 million in exit payments from citigroup. he's a former bank of america investment banker. good job, if you can get it. he received a $9 million payment when he was nominated last year. he's yet to be confirmed. these payouts could be interpreted as big banks trying to get influence on public policy. that hurts, doesn't it? this shady tactic is nothing new and it's in writing. citigroup provides an executive contract clause that awards
2:05 pm
those who go work for the federal government or regulatory body. big banks and big corporations want the tpp to happen. this is influence. the table, you could argue, is easily being set by the big banks over the middle class. just like the rest of the ultra rich in this country. listen to a venture capitalist tom perkins. >> what is your 62nd idea to change the world? >> the tom perkins system is you don't get to vote unless you pay a dollar of taxes, but what i really think is it should be like a corporation. you pay a million dollars in taxes if you get a million votes. >> wouldn't that be fair to everybody? they'll live on the moon with thinking like that.
2:06 pm
a new report shows just out of touch these folks are, the special society. wealthy wall streeters have created their own fraternity that's not much different than the one they were in in college. they get together for the annual shin dig banquet. they talk about their money and they haze new members known . >> good evening, exalted high council, former grand swipes, grand swipes-in waiting, and fellow wall street kappas. they are required to dress up in
2:07 pm
drag. probably wouldn't go over in the north dakota gun club, but that's what they do. they perform variety shows that include jokes we couldn't air with you on "the ed show." there was a homo phobic joke made about congressman frank. if it wasn't for the federal government, they wouldn't be having their offensive party. these wall street executives are making fun of you the taxpayers. you've been game. they don't live in a world of reality as most americans. they only care about their money and their lifestyle. they're not the job creators. they're the paper shufflers. they make money off money, shuffling paper, and they resent
2:08 pm
the middle class americans who are out there strugglie ining e day and you'll never hear this crowd talk about the long-term unemployed. there's one more thing i wanted to point out to you. they think they're taxed too much. i can't say for sure, but i'm guessing they have some money offshore not paying any tax. get your cell phones out. i want to know what you think. tonight's question -- do you think the justice went soft on wall street? text a for yes. text b for no. you can always go to our blog and leave a comment there. we'll bring you the results later on in the show. for more, let me bring in the cofounder of the blog "republic report.org." >> thanks for having me. >> are these payments to trade representatives just big banks trying to buy influence, you
2:09 pm
know, influence of public policy when they have it written in the deal? what's that all about? >> that appears to be the case. as you mentioned, many of these banks actually have it in their employment contract for their top level bankers. if they receive jobs with federal government, they receive bonuses. again, these are payments are legal. however, they do pose conflicts of interest because these trade deals, particularly the tpp, influences the big banks. >> it just underscores. they have money just laying around. they want to have friends that leave the firm and the bank. because if they're ever in a position to make a decision, they'll remember their old friends of where they used to work. how else can it be interpreted? >> i think that's fair. if you look all over the federal
2:10 pm
government, many different bank officials and defense contracts, they receive these big bonuss to go into the government and they go back into the private sector and receive another bonus for doing those type of vactions. in addition to what you mentioned earlier in the show, the tpp some have argued is a trojan horse for corporate deregulation. senator warren and others have noted the tpp provides certain rules that provide corporations and banks to challenge government and knock down certain regulations. this would undo dodd-frank regulations and block new
2:11 pm
regulations on der rivatives. >> thank you for your time tonight. let's bring in senator bernie sanders. how do you unwind this? this is almost like a special society that runs america. power and influence at its best. >> well, ed, let me talk about power and influence and tell you there was a recent study that just came out that showed network television does not talk about the tpp. this is the largest trade agreement in the history of the united states. it is not talked about on corporate television. thank you for discussing it. second of all, offensively, we have a two-party system. historically on trade agreements you have both leaderships of the democrats and republicans coming together, strongly supported by corporate america, to come up
2:12 pm
with trade agreements that are devastating to the working class of this country. trade agreements have resulted in the loss of millions of decent paying jobs. the tpp would sanctify the rights of corporations. >> senator, i've often thought it is disposal income that runs our economy. what kind of rate can you get? who can pay the rate? if they can pay the rate, that's what we're going to set it at. it doesn't matter how many customers we have out there. what kind of rate can you get? what's out there? what's the potential of getting the kind of rate you can get? it's almost as if the middle
2:13 pm
class -- doesn't matter if they have discretionary income. you look at the stock market. i believe in all the capitalistic things, but greed has entered in at an unprecedented level and economic patriotism has left the building. >> go ahe go ahead, sir. >> vietnam, the minimum wage there is 28 cents an hour. americans would be forced to compete with people who make 28 cents an hour. in terms of prescription drugs, the pharmaceutical industry charges us in america the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs.
2:14 pm
what they want to do is tell poor countries around the world they can't get low cost generic drugs. they have to pay top price for brand-name drugs, and they're going to impose restrictions on poor countries that have to pay high prices for drugs. in america, many states and the federal government have buy american top legislation. we want to create jobs in this country. that can be overruled by the tpp. federal government itself will have to allow competition with vietnam and other countries for products that they wish -- products and services they wish to buy. >> senator, what's your reaction to the outrageous video and story and party that was on wall street and apparently is just part of the culture? these are the folks who were bailed out by the american tape
2:15 pm
and were propped up to buy more banks. >> these guys are living in a separate world. they are making unbelievable sums of money. they have contempt for the american people, who bail them out when their greed and recklessness and illegal behavior drove this economy into a major recession. they are only concerned about making as much money as they possibly can. then they use some of that money to get involved in elections to help elect extreme right wing candidates. they use their power and their money in the election process to give them more power and money. >> senator, great to have you with us tonight. i appreciate you always speaking up to this issue. it's a culture of corruption and greed. it's in the fast track in this country. i don't know who can reverse it. remember to answer tonight's

career change. >> am i to call you joe or sam? >> hard working straight talking americans. >> joe the plumber is now joe the union worker. >> it amazing me that that's such a difficult concept to grasp. >> unions have made america strong for years and years. today's top trender, overdrive. the right wing propaganda machine worked. >> the volkswagen factory rejects the united auto workers. >> we don't have to pay those great big dues. >> conservatives rev up their anti-union rhetoric. >> when people look at detroit, they see the uaw. >> why not talk about unions
2:22 pm
that are sending jobs to mexico. >> wasn't that a great misinformation package? just for a correction of what was just seen there so our audience isn't confused, the vote down in chattanooga, tennessee, had the united auto workers union had been voted it, it was optional for the workers to join the union. it was just whether the union was going to represent certain workers when certain issues come to the workplace. great to have you with us tonight. appreciate your time. >> great to be with you. >> do unions hinder or enhance
2:23 pm
jobs in this country? >> do they have disagreements with management from time to time? sure they do. the icons of u.s. industry from ge and boeing and gm and chrysler, they're represented by union workers. they make great products. they make the top selling pickup in the united states. there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that unions and the uaw in particular are now parking lot of the -- part of the challenge. none of that has to do with the hard working men and women who put those cars together. >> when the automobile loan was fished out, the unions had to go
2:24 pm
back, redo the entire game plan as far as wages, pension, benefits, health care, everything was redone. now they're getting bonus checks, the workers, because they have redone the industry because of outside foreign pressure. no question about it. it has always been a real source of soreness for a lot of people that unions cause outsourcing. it simply isn't the case, is it? >> it's not. there's no evidence that unions cost that. part of it is the lack of a good manufacturing policy. in germany, unions and worker councils all throughout manufacturing, it had $48 an hour average wages in manufacturing. u.s. average wage is $32 an
2:25 pm
hour. manufacturing had nothing to do with wage rates or unionization rates. it has everything to do with trade policy and currency and health care costs and a lot of other factors that are out of control of the men and women who put vehicles together. as you saw from some of the tennessee politicians, they still engage in this state to state labor race to the bottom. there's a way. you have seen the detroit three make significant investments in their factories. north of the mason dixon line they're churning out profits. they need are better policies from washington and less of this damaging rhetoric.
2:26 pm
>> i had a state legislator from tennessee tell me today on the radio -- he said, we're a poor state and fear worked on these folks. that's just how it all turned out. are these manufacturing jobs now facing a new political wall that has to be climbed because of senator corker, the governor down there, and some legislators have started threatening retribution on tax policy and such as this. they think that turned the vote. is this the new wave? >> i hope it is not. there are examples of governors who have high-road strategies trying to attract investment and are doing it successful. governor cuomo is a great example of that. when the chinese government says we're going to build a factory in tennessee, they're happy to
2:27 pm
have that communist money, but if their workers want to choose representation, it's horrible. >> it's what's in it for me. not what's in it for america. scott paul, great to have you with us tonight. president obama is running an all out offensive on environmental standards. what could it mean for approval of the keystone xl pipeline? our rapid response panel will weigh in on the new republican buzz word. next, i'm taking your questions. we're right back.

welcome back to "the ed show." love the questions. love hearing from the viewers. our first question, what would be a winning issue that will help us, i would assume the liberals and the democrats, keep the senate and turn the house
2:31 pm
blue? a winning issue? i don't know if there's a winning issue out there, but i do believe that the tpp, the trade agreement, is doing to be very important. i also think that you have to stand with workers. if you stand with working families, they'll be in a lot better position if there is no gray area in that regard. next week on this program we're going to talk a lot about the xl pipeline, how i think that's going to have an influence in the midterms. i'll explain next week. our next question, how will we ever get congress to stop being bought off by corporate lobbyists? that may never happen, but it's the power of the vote. you have to make sure you're going to hire someone who is unpoliu unspoiled and you have to get rid of the ones that are spoiled. they know that. stick around. rapid response panel coming up.

2:36 pm
to enforce the law. >> he's feeding more distrust. >> the president has to democrat that the country and the congress can trust him. >> this is a verify then trust approach. >> one of the biggest obstacles we face is the one of trust. >> what a coincidence, huh? for years i have been talking about republicans two-word culture. we've seen them pop up every election year. tax cuts. job creators. entitlement reform. this year republicans have simplified it for 2014. they have boiled it down to one word. take a listen. >> trust. the economy doesn't work without trust. when there is trust, confidence, and reliability, the economy grows. to fix the economy, we have to restore trust. especially trust in government. >> how can we deed of trutrust
2:37 pm
government when they spy on journalists and regular citizens? 75% of americans don't trust obama's government to do the right thing. >> true. how can you have any faith in the economy? >> we can't trust the democrat politicians here in illinois with the economy. they keep burying us deeper in debt. >> the way to restore trust in the government is to stop the out of control growth of the government. >> a small government doesn't dig us deeper in debt. republicans know it takes trust to create jobs. >> paid for by america's pac. to fix the economy, we must elect politicians we trust with the economy. >> joining me tonight the host of the "reed report" and a talk media consultant.
2:38 pm
you put us on to this word trust. it went from d.c. to illinois awful fast. this is the playbook. >> i was going to lose count there for a second. every four seconds the word trust came up. in addition to that list of other catch phrases, this is garden variety sloganing. this is the big mantra right now. this joins a litany of other catch phrases. you'll never hear a republican talk about immigration reform. it's amnesty. you'll never have a republican elude to the affordable health care act. it's the government takeover of health care. we're all hearing them parrot
2:39 pm
the stimulus didn't stimulate. garden variety, focus group driven sloganing. >> joy, what can the people trust about the republican party? how do the democrats reverse this? it's a stupid word game that's being done, but it works in some part of the country. >> they're very good at this and framing issues and making it simple. when you look at the base they're talking to, older voters, there are people who don't like and trust president obama. making it really simple is from a standpoint of branding and advertising. republicans don't seem to be successful at policies. when they try and put forward policy, their policies don't tend to be popular. we would like to privatize social security. oh, no. that's not popular.
2:40 pm
if your ideas don't go over well the broad public, the best thing to do is to use the slogans. the problem with the approach is if you also look at the polls the american people don't trust the republican party either. the government shutdown feeds into that. they're seen as not willing to work with others. so that's where the problem comes in. >> they think they're going to get through 2014 by attacking something they doesn't trust, which is the president of the united states, and they're not going to come to the table with anything for immigration and working families and health care. they have nothing on the table. isn't this rather unprecedented. >> it is and it isn't. part of the art of politics is to get through an election by saying as little as possible
2:41 pm
about yourself. the idea of partially privatizing social security, it is what paul ryan and others want to do. >> keep it simple, stupid and throw a boat load of money at it and watch it work. >> that's where talk radio takes over. it's repetition. this stuff gets recited over and over and it is the power of radio. what 2014 is going to test is that old adage about we disapprove of congress, but we like our guy. let's see if they like their guy in 2014. because another catch phrase
2:42 pm
we're already hearing in political advertising is if you're running against any incumbent, you call him or her a career politician. problem is that door swings both ways. you could see that about mitch mcconnell. >> i have a word and i want to test it on you. spoiled versus unspoiled. you take the money from the big donors from all these pacs that have nothing to do with your backyard other than to drive an ideology, you're spoiled. what i'm saying here is that democrats have to come up with some kind of a strategy. right wing radio reaches 90% of americans every day. >> as you were mentioning last night, this uaw vote in the tennessee plant wasn't won. it was lost based on messaging.
2:43 pm
t elections like that and the 2014 midterms are what the messages hinge on now. >> what would you tell the democrats to do at this point? if you're running a campaign and it is neck and neck and you hear the word trust, how do you counterpunch it? >> i would like to mary landrieu. you have to get as specific as possible. she is running against the governor of louisiana, even though she is running for reelection in the united states senate. she's saying you, the taxpayer, pay your federal taxes, and now the republicans are refusing to take the medicaid expansion. that means you're not getting your tax monies worth. indigent people who are going to louisiana hospitals are on your dime. you're paying for their er care because the republicans wouldn't take the money you've paid in. the republicans are trying to win by being vague.
2:44 pm
>> in the early days, you taught me the most important words on talk radio is "you" and "your." that's where it is. >> that's what it takes to cut through the clutter. >> great to have you with us tonight. coming up, he's not blowing smoke. president obama is taking a strong stance on the environment. what could it mean for his decision coming up on the keystone xl pipeline? that's next. so we're up early. up late. thinking up game-changing ideas, like this: dozens of tax free zones across new york state. move here. expand here. or start a new business here... and pay no taxes for 10 years. with new jobs, new opportunities and a new tax free plan. there's only one way for your business to go. up. find out if your business can qualify at start-upny.com

2:46 pm
2:47 pm
2:48 pm
and in pretenders tonight, watered down marco rubio. he's trying to throw water on the success of obama's stimulus package, but the senator is coming up all confused. >> today tis the fifth anniversary of the government's failed stimulus program.
2:49 pm
somehow the economy would begin to grow and create jobs. it failed. truth, massive government spending, debt spending, is not the solution of our economic growth problems. >> 47 months of private sector job growth doesn't mean anything. i have a few facts for him. it put 1.6 million people back to work each year through 2012. 95% of americans got a tax cut or a tax credit. 693 drinking water systems were delivered to 48 million americans all under the stimulus package. rubio would have to use hypnosis to get us to believe his twisted pitch, but if he thinks his message does anything more than make us sleepy, he can keep on pretending.

(laughs) it's more than just a meal, it's meow mix mealtime. with wholesome ingredients and irresistible taste, no wonder it's the only one cats ask for by name.
2:53 pm
welcome back to "the ed show." this is a story for the folks who take a shower after work. president obama out working today to solidify his base by taking a strong stance on the environment. earlier today he appeared at a safeway distribution center in maryland to talk about the new fuel efficiency standards for medium and heavy-duty trucks. >> improving gas mileage for these trucks are going to drive down our oil imports even further. that reduces carbon pollution even more, cuts down on businesses' fuel costs, which
2:54 pm
should pay off in lower prices for consumers. so it's not just a win-win, it's a win-win-win. you got three wins. >> well, tomorrow president obama is heading to mexico to meet with the country's president there, and also the prime minister of canada, canadian president there. and of course obama, the president of the united states should expect some pressure from prime minister steven harper over the approval of the controversial keystone pipeline. harper recently called the extension of the pipeline, quote, inevitable. the canadian government has been a vocal advocate of the $5.4 billion construction project. the debate in the united states has intensified since the state department's environmental analysis said the pipeline would not significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions, despite the report, environmentalists and some people in the democratic base are strongly opposed to the
2:55 pm
pipeline. i will be in nebraska on friday, talking to the folks on the ground who will clearly be affected by the pipeline if something were to go wrong. there are two sides of the story. joe rome, founding editor of climateprogress.org joins us tonight. joe, good to have you back with us. what the president did today was good, was it not? >> absolutely. there is nothing like fuel efficiency, lowering oil consumption, reducing pollution, saving people money. >> is there a chance he could be setting the table to come back and say what we've saved over here, it's going to be kind of a wash so we can go along with the pipeline? do you think there is a case that is building to give the president an opportunity to do this? >> well, you know, i hear what you're saying. but on the other hand his secretary of state just a few days ago i think you played it on the show said that climate change was the most fearsome weapon of mass destruction. very strong speech about the dangers of climate change.
2:56 pm
and if climate change is a wmd, then the canadian tar sand s on of the dirtiest pools of carbon is a hydrogen bomb. and the keystone would be a delivery system. it's so inconsistent with the way john kerry has been talking about climate. it's sort of hard to understand how he could recommend to the president opening it up. >> well, that's the point. he went so far in that speech. i mean, there was nobody left on the beach on that one. i mean, he was very clear. i don't know how he walks back a recommendation to the president saying yeah, i think you should build the pipeline, mr. president. president obama's climate action has helped this country take some steps to seriously cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 by the action that he did today. if he approves the keystone xl pipeline, would it overshadow all the work he has done in the eyes of environmental groups? >> oh, i think absolutely. this is a decision for him and
2:57 pm
john kerry to make. you know, i think the thing to bear in mind is that we're talking about a million barrels of oil a day of the dirtiest crude that you can imagine. and to sign off on that when he could just say no, obviously it would be sending a message that all of his talk about climate is just talk. >> the public comment ends on march 7th. what happens between now and then that would change the president's mind? you've got the canadian prime minister. you know he is going to be putting heat on the president down in mexico when he says it's inevitable. what does that mean? how does that receive your ears? >> exactly. i think the point is it's not inevitable. the whole premise of the state department report and some of the premise of your argument has been that the oil is going to get here no matter what. so you might as well build keystone. well, the premise of the state department report is also that the planet is going to warm, it's just going to keep unleashing carbon pollution
2:58 pm
until the planet warms 10 degrees fahrenheit that is a weapons of mass destruction. so i don't think it's inevitable. i think that people are coming around to the reality that this doesn't make a lot of sense. right now there is only very little amount of canadian tar sands that goes by rail. maybe 1/20th of what would go through the pipeline. and activists have been able to make the case against the keystone pipeline. given the chance once we've stopped the pipeline to see what we can do about stopping the train loads of oil that supposedly would inevitablely come into this country. because i don't think it's inevitable. >> i heard senator heidi hidecamp go on the floor. >> that's an old style argument. the whole security notion came up during the 1973 oil embargo when opec actually withheld oil from us.
