scratching their heads. they've evacuated some 1,000 homes near l.a. here's miguel almaguire. >> reporter: on ridgeview drive the order to evacuate just before the next big storm rolls in. ed, a retiree, has been working around the clock, but now he is out of time. >> the water will be come over first, and this whole thing will be full of mud. >> he knows it won't take much for this mountain to slide into his backyard. >> how worried are you? >> it's going to happen. we're going to deal with it. we need the rain. we don't want the mess.

we'll take the rain. we'll clean up the mess. >> reporter: only four years ago a winter storm buried a nearby neighborhood in mud after a wildfire torched the foot hills. all of los angeles is on high alert. >> live team coverage. >> it took only an inch to make freeways a mess. in southern california nearly 200 accidents. hazmat teams shut down this highway for a fuel spill. on social media tweets like this. nobody owns an umbrella, and nobody knows how to drive in rain. from police, "buckle up. put down your cell phone and drive safe." the silver lining, california desperately needs water. they measure the snow pack, 75% below normal. ed knows more rain, the main event, is coming friday into saturday. his family has packed up and moved to safer ground.

that same winter storm is moved to new england. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. ukraine's ousted president will go public today for the first time since fleeing kiev. viktor yanukovych will give a news conference from russia. now, crimea is at the southern tip of russia. that's according to ukraine's new interior minister who described it on facebook as a military invasion and occupation, but russia says its military exercises on the ukrainian border are not a prelewd to intervention. secretary of state john kerry says russia told the u.s. it will respect ukraine's sovereignty, but tensions are heightened with russia scrambling fighter jets tlurs to patrol borders. meanwhile, the white house says vice president joe biden has called ukraine's new prime

minister pledging u.s. support after a new government was formed yesterday. new help for u.s. military veterans is on hold today after it was blocked by republicans in the senate. the $21 billion bill failed to reach the 60 most needed to advance. 41 republicans voted against it saying it was just too expensive. the bill would have expanded medical, education, and job training benefits for veterans and their families. it would have created 27 new medical facilities for iraq war vets. the legislation had the backing of most veterans organizations. president obama opening up like never before at a candid and emotional kickoff event at the white house. he launched a program giving yupg men of color giving them a greater shot at success. it's called my brother's keeper. he said he could have been a negative statistic. >> i didn't have a dad in the house, and i was angry about it even though i didn't necessarily

the rain is really coming down hard now along coastal areas of california, and even in l.a. in the last ten minutes or so we've picked up in the intensity of the rain, and it goes from san francisco all the way to san diego. exactly what they needed. of course, we don't want the damaging winds and mudslides that will accompany it, but that's just the way it goes it seems in california. the rest of the nation, it is a bitterly cold morning in new england. much colder than it's been. minus 7 is your wind chill this morning, and that's warm compared to upstate new york and northern new england. here's how i see it taking place. as we go through sunday into monday, on sunday the worst of the storm will be an ice storm from oklahoma through northern portions of arkansas, southern missouri. snowstorms in the north of that from areas just north of st. louis, kansas city, right along i-70. looks to be a little south of chicago right now. then as we go to the northeast, monday looks like a full blown snow day. philadelphia, new york city, possibly southern new england and the d.c., baltimore wrar looks to be a mess. looks to be snow and ice. >> snowstorm has been -- ice

some stories making news this morning. a big win for gay marriage prop ownents. a federal judge ordered kentucky officials to legally recognize marriages of same-sex couples performed out of state. the judge said any laws that argue otherwise will violate the 14th amendment. governor chris christie has just about had it with questions related to the lane closures on the george washington bridge. when asked recently about the activities of his staff, first he responded "what do you do, grab them by the ankles and shake them upside down until emails fall out of their pockets?" on a related note the audio of the 911 calls from the september bridge gridlock is set to be released this morning.

how many politicians who pledge to donate their salary to charity during the government shutdown actually kept their word? at least 116 of the 244 lawmakers who pledged have donated almost $500,000 to charity and government accounts, so i kind of guess 47% isn't too bad for a bunch of politicians. hmm? president obama and vice president biden took part in the first lady's let's move campaign by taking a lap around the white house. >> mr. president, ready to move? >> absolutely. let's do this thing. let's move. ♪ >> after a good workout, got to

track, that is 11 republicans and ten democrats, which breaks down to 130 terms served among democrats and 99 in the gop, and that is a whole lot of experience. actor and comedian seth rogan may pack them into the movies, but it was contradicts where he testified about alzheimer's disease. he is blasting so many senators for being absent, tweeting out this picture of all the empty seats. he says the absent senators are not prioritizing the disease debilitating his mother-in-law. illinois senator mark kirk tweeted this picture of the two together in a note reading thanks to seth rogen for speaking out. seth roguan shot back. why did you leave before my speech? kirk said he had another meeting, but later watched rogen's testimony. how democratic is your name? strategy company, the clarity team, has the answer and we decided to put it to the test.

with retirement packages, so i think that there is a lot of wrangling going on with veterans and the defense community, but typically this is a constituency that supports republicans. i wouldn't really expect that to change. >> i want to switch gears because the president is launching a new effort called my brother's keeper. big businesses are preponderanced to support this, while obama care has really gotten a lot of scrutiny. could this initiative actually be his legacy issue? >> great, great question, and i think it will be. i think that this issue particularly for african-american men is something that the president has already made a huge difference on and is something that he is going to continue to make a difference on going forward even after he is president. i think that it's a huge piece of a legacy work that has already really begun, but is now being formalized that we're going to see played out for years to come even after the president leaves office. >> you talk about it being formalized. the president stressed this is

not some big government program but, rather, an effort to urge outside groups to act. by asking for social action and not trying to mandate it, does this have a better shot at working? >> you know, i think what's interesting about the first lady's policy initiative from yesterday, she really did flex a lot of policy muscle because, you know, yes, this was mandated and -- not some big government program, but there actually were some concrete initiative that is we saw yesterday that are going to be changed. how folks, for example, read their food labels. another huge legacy standpointen not only from the president, but also the first lady, this let's move initiative that i think are two big areas that we're going to see the obamas post-white house really take shape. >> we will be watching. thank you, kevin. we do appreciate it. have a great weekend. >> you too. thanks for having me. coming up, "first buzz"
