a smoking american eagle plane forced make an emergency landing in texas. it happened right after takeoff in dallas last night. a passenger on the illinois-bound plane tweeted, i'm hearing the cockpit full of smoke. captain and flight attendant, can't thank you enough for getting us on the ground safely. no one was injured. and severe turbulence on a flight bound for palm beach. it was so bad that trays and drinks were flying around. one flight attendant was injured, but the plane landed safely. now a u.s. army one-star general facing sexual assault charges. brigadier general jeffrey sinclair is accused of assaulting an officer. he maintains his innocence of forcing sex acts, but he will admit guilt on three lesser

charges, including improper relationships with two other officers. the married father of two is expected to plead in court before opening statements at the court-marti court-martial. he expected to be the most senior to face charges on sexual assault and could face life in prison if convicted. and out of afghanistan, five afghan soldiers killed by a nato air strike. it happened around 3:30 this morning local time. eight other troops were injured in the strike. an afghan defense ministry spokesman confirming this to nbc news. nato says it has begun an investigation and in a statement says it values its strong relationship with its afghan partners. staying overseas so the ongoing crisis in ukraine. pro-russian forces control all access to the crimean peninsula. all this as the flurry of

diplomatic activity produced little progress. jim, is sounds like today is more of the same. are we seeing any movement with these talks? >> reporter: well, betty, it is more of the same. secretary of state john kerry is being positive about the flurry of diplomacy, saying that talks with his russian counterpart yesterday were, quote, tough, but constructive. one of the key goals was to russian and ukraine an foreign minister face to face, but that never happened. the russians say the new interim government wput into place by a unconstitutional coup. the talks will continue later today as they try to find a compromise out of the present crisis. meanwhile, russian president vladimir putin had another phone conversation with german chancellor angela merkel and
