the missing on the malaysian airline jet, they're expanding their search for the plane and the 239 people onboard. officials believe the plane crashed somewhere in the gulf of thailand, off the coast of vietnam. joining us now is keir simmons. >> good morning. the tension is here, because in this very hotel, are journalists and we believe relatives of those missing, all waiting for news. the journalists cram into this news, where government ministers come out to give the latest updates. they're having to say that what happened is simply a mystery, there have been some sightings of debris, but they said they haven't turned out to belong to the aircraft. they're still doing tests on oil

found off the coast of vietnam. and the latest sighting is the possibility of an overturned life raft. as but as we speak, simply no news. a u.s. fleet is involved in the search as well, it has a helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft. but the commander onboard there says that the waves are likely to get higher, he's talking about four to six-foot waves tonight, which will make the search more difficult, which is exactly not what these people searching need. there are people searching from all over the world. >> nbc's keir simmons reporting for us. new ukraine prime minister will visit the white house. on sunday, thousands locked in to independence square in kiev

more than 100 witnesses who may be called. but so far, only nine have taken the stand. the head security guard on duty when steenkamp was killed took the stand. the olympian claims that he shot steenkamp in a tragic accident. the judge adjourned the trial to consider a prosecutor's request not airing a story about steenkamp's autopsy. timothy cardinal dolan said that the pontiff wants to determine why some support the issue. >> he didn't come right out that he was for them. once again in an extraordinarily sincere, nhe said, i know some states have chosen that.

>> pope francis turned heads last week during an interview with an italian newspaper. he said marriage is between a man and woman, but he said last week, quote -- that interview was the first time that pope francis suggested a possible acceptance of civil unions. so, the results are in and senator rand paul is the belle of the ball at cpac, he won the conservative's congress annual straw poll. he finished with the 31% of the vote. they were followed by ben carson and chris christie. if the straw poll is to be believe, marco rubio's stock has fallen in a big way. rubio came in seventh this time around with just 6% of the cpac votes. coming off of his victory, paul looked to differentiate himself
