this friday. a routine flight turned deadly on an airplane. investigators are looking into the cause. nbc's kurt gregory describes what happens. >> reporter: scary moments for the members of a u.s. flight forced to evacuate this plane when a tire on the the front landing gear blew during takeoff. >> she said the plane took off and then it came down and went up again and then it came down again and then it basically crash landed. >> airport officials say u.s. flight 1702 was departed philadelphia international airport heading for ft. lauderdale, florida, when the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure. the pilot on boarding takeoff skidded to a stop, nose down on the runway. all 149 passengers and crew members fled the jet, using inflatable chutes and emergency exits on the wings. >> the air crew did a find job.

>> reporter: two passengers requested medical assistance, but both are in good condition. all of the other passengers were transferred to another plane. airline officials say the incident is under investigation. . >> it is now friday afternoon in malaysia, and the search continues for the missing passenger jet. investigators are focusing on what went on inside the cockpit and whether the on board systems tracking the plane were deliberately disabled. tom costello has the latest. >> reporter: the search for flight 370 is shifting west as u.s. government sources tell nbc news there's evidence the plane's automated systems gave off faint pings for up to four hours after going off radar. that means the plane could have traveled 2,500 miles any direction. a vast expanse of the globe that includes tp indian ocean. >> what it doesn't tell us is what direction.

whether it went west, east, north, south. at this point we know the airplane was operational and probably didn't have a mechanical malfunction or failure. >> reporter: the u.s. destroyer uss kid is now moving to the strait of monica, and the white house says the search area could expand further. >> based on new information that's not necessarily inclusive, an additional search area may be open in the indian ocean and we are consulting. >> reporter: u.s. government sources is say it appears more likely ma lmalaysia did pick up the radar over the indian ocean. search teams were unable to find any debris in the olocation whee the chinese satellite spotted something. they said releasing the image is a mistake. controllers lost contact with flight 370 somewhere between

malaysia and vietnam. no radars, no radios, no identifying transponders. >> turn it three clicks to the left and this is off. >> reporter: he said in the plane did make a u-turn, it would be a deliberate action. >> there's absolutely nothing that could go wrong with the airplane that would cause the transponder to turn off and start doing a turn. >> st plan vanished. we have expanded the duty the search area because it's our duty. trust me when i say we will not give up. >> and nbc's tom costello will have an update this morning on "today." and the problems are mounting for general motors. company officials now telling federal regulators ignition problems on some cars surfaced earlier than first mentioned. it involved several gm models made between 2003 and 2007 and nbc news has learned that gm developed a partial fix to the

faulty ignition switch back in 2005, but didn't tell owners that it was available. all this after nbc obtained and reviewed hundreds of pages of court documents and video depositions. now according to those, some gm officials made a business decision not to spend money on a par official fix. they now acknowledge the problems are linked to 12 deaths. the there are more problems for the automaker. an independent consumer watchdog group says federal research shows more than 300 bags deployed after the air bags did not deploy. in the ukraine, there are fresh worries the russians are moving in. right now russian troops are gathering at three points along the ukrainian border. it's rattling a shaky part of the world and sending stocks

that means politico's kevin join us. >> good morning. happy friday. >> happy friday. so senator john mccain went off on the senate floor saying don't call yourself fellow republicans and he was embarrassed the fellow republicans went to a ukraine aid package. so was mccain justified in that anger? >> wow right? for senator mccain this is someone who republicans in the far right have criticized. he seems to not care at all. last night giving a remarkable display on the senate floor. saying that republicans should really back this imf package. he's not alone, though, betty. senators bob corker as well as some more senators in the republican party supporting him on this. house speaker john boehner though says, you know, this is not something that the folks in his party want the imf funding should not be wrangled into this ukraine debate. it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out when the

senate gets back from recess at the end of march and retakes up this issue. >> it was quite a tongue lashing nonetheless. but democrats want an apology from chairman issa following the microphone cutting incident that we've all been talking about. and there's talk he may have followed some rules. that may not be enough to make this go away. >> now what is interesting is representative issa did apologize to representative cummings. now whether or not that's going to be enough, republicans blocked a measure by democrats to sort of have a more formal apology. but republicans maintain that representative issa followed the rules. i think we're seeing a lot of politic going on over this contentious irs debate.
