five hours. that means it is possible that the plane could have traveled 2500 miles in any direction prompting this huge expansion of the search zone far across the indian ocean. this morning malaysia's transit minister refused to comment on the reports that the plane continued to fly for hours. >> we want nothing more than to find the plane as quickly as possible. but the circumstances have forced us to widen our search. a normal investigation becomes narrower with time i understand. as new information focuses on the search, but this is not a normal investigation. >> meanwhile any new report released this morning, chinese scientists say a seismic event consistent with an airplane crash has been gaeeen gee desecd on the sea floor. the signal was detected in the
8:02 am
early hours of last saturday. tom costello joins me now. so officials in malaysia would not comment on the reports that the plane continued flying for hour, but they confirm the expansion search. so why not give more information as to why they now expand it. >> i think its the ethe's hard t a good handle other than they have in fact wide pned the sear area. this is malaysia. you see this body of water right here, that is the south china sea and the guflf of thailand ad right in this general area is where the plane went missing. now the idea is by now we should have seen debris in here. somebody with all this ships, with all the asset ts would hav seen something had the leplane down. as they move the search area mf-here is the last point of contact up there in the gulf.
8:03 am
and now you've got down here is where they believe that the plane may have traveled over the straight of mal la made la came straight of made la came and up into the indian ocean. that's why the u.s. has a p 3 orion plane doing a grid pattern up there, as well. if we go back to the super wide view, they're now moving the entire search zone up into this area, as well. and down into this area, as well. and the indian ocean is 28 square miles. so if it kept flying, it could be out here, up here, it could be anywhere in there. and so that is their challenge right now. >> so let me understand this. you because we've done stories particularly crime stories that
8:04 am
i've done where you hear about cell phone pings trying to locate an individual. help us understand these pings and if they are in fact real, why wouldn't that lead to the location of the plane. >> so the pings as it's described to us, these are pings from a computer system on board of plane that is in an idle state. all it is saying is i'm here, i'm here, i'm here. but it's not sending data on location, speed, heading, et cetera. but what they're wondering is as it hit the satellite, and we goc don't think it was a constant pinging, it was several over several hours. but as it hit the sat liellite if it was traveling in this direction and the satellite was up here, can it through math mattie california could yculati moving in this direction. that will take sophisticated

>> kristen dahlgren joins us live. the reaction is certainly something we can understand. but what do we know about the investigation here? >> reporter: well, it's ongoing. they were able to tow the damaged plane away so they're now looking at it trying for figure out what went wrong with the tire for anyone traveling today, things here at philadelphia, operations running again as normal. p b but that is a far cry from what they went through. the plane literally bouncing town the runway and passengers had to run to escape. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: as passengers rushed from the smoking plane, cell phone video captured the frantic dash. with the plane resting on its nose, one passenger took a se selfie. >> oh, my god, the plane is on fire. >> plane just came down pretty hard. we bounced and came down hard again and we bounced again.
8:07 am
>> cleared for takeoff. >> reporter: the a-320 carrying 149 passengers and five crew started down the runway building up speed when a tire blew p p. the pilots aborted the takeoff but it slammed down twice. >> are you still on the runway? we'll dispatch emergency vehicles. >> reporter: the flight a attendants were already evacuating passengers. >> everyone else on the frees defense city, just sit tight and hold positions. >> reporter: remarkably just two passengers asked for medical assistance at the scene. most of the taken passengers we on another plane, arriving in ft. lauderdale overnight. among them, hannah, the woman who took the selfie. >> i want to show my parents and everyone what was going on. like i'm far enough away, i was one of the first people out of the plane, so i just took my phone out and i'll take a video.
8:08 am
oh, my god. >> reporter: so really scary moments there. the passengers that were treated according to the airline, they're in good condition. they weren't physically harmed but just distressed understandably by all of this. there were a few others also who decided not to take that flight last night, not ready forget on another plane. and you talked about it a little bit this morning. so interesting. such a different world that when something like this happens, so many people these days take out their cell phones and start recording it and taking things like selfies. so we did get dramatic pictures of this one. >> definitely makes you wonder what you would do in the situation. i think i would have kept running until i made it home. but that's me. thank you so much, greatly appreciate it. there has been a major breakthrough on capitol hill that could extend unemployment benefits for horn 2 mi s fos fon americans. a bipartisan group of senators
8:09 am
reached a deal that if passed would stepped long term benefits for five months. the deal would retroactively restore benefits that expired back in december when the program expired. the extension would run through the end of may. five republicans from states with high unemployment joined five democrats in support of this deal. their support should give the bill the 60 votes necessary to pass. now, l now, politico reports the horse trading was so furious that the deal was not finalized ed unti minutes before the announcement. joining me now, kelly o'donnell. as i understand it, we've not heard anything from speaker john boehner regarding the house reaction. >> to the specifics outlined in this deal, that's right. aides close to the speaker say it's too soon for them to weigh in. they have other issues they're dealing with today and we know that the senate will not act on
8:10 am
this until after they return from this krup coming week where they will be back home and travel and so forth. so there is a little bit of breathing room where the house can decide how it will proceed. there was a frantic reaction to this when it came through. when we talk about negotiations going on behind closed door, it's easy to have something fall off the radar. but the work had gone on and in addition other senators who also participated. but did not join on as co-sponsors. what is so critical about having five republican senators is that by just the numbers is enough to get past the 60 vote threshold which is so critical when dealing with senate issues. so that is a very, very good sign. what they were able to do, the real difference in this compared to some of the earlier conversations is they found a rather complicated list of things to pay for this, but pay for it they do. and that's important in terms of selling to republicans while at the same time being able to deal
8:11 am
with the issue of these long term unemployed who have lost their federal benefits over the last couple of months. as you you pointed out, it would be retroactive but still a short term solution. so they will have to address it yet again. this is a blueprint at least for how they can go about it. and i think a sign that there is real evidence of work that does go on behind the scenes where senators who don't always agree on things can sit down and come together and hammer something out. so there are several steps still to go. but an couragencouraging signs. >> one might say the conversation for at least one point comprehensive immigration reform,s's always been the house where is the hold up and some of the contentious behavior. already house republicans reacting to the senate deal according to "time" magazine. jim jordan republican from ohio
8:12 am
says i haven't seen it, but, no, we need to be focused on policies that really job, not focusing on extending unemployment forever. peter ross from illinois says there would be a high level of scrutiny on the level of the pay for here. >> this comes to the real philosophical divide. there are those who believe the idea of unemployment insurance is that it should be limited in part to give people some help to get through tough times. but not to in any way encourage people to not be looking for jobs. a debate about that and what is the incentive or something that just needs to be done because of the recession affecting so many people who have not been able to get employed after a long time. we're referring for the longest unemployed. it goes beyond 99 weeks. so there is a philosophical discussion. you have some of the names really frustrated in the house,
8:13 am
things that they think would be better suited to stimulating job production, giving people opportunity, haven't gotten as much attention. so that argument is always under the surface and part of the conversation, specifics of this piece of legislation we'll just have to see. but if speaker boehner and his team put it forward, you will get support and could be enough to carry it. there wouldn't be a case where they're looking for full republican support to pass it. you'd have a big bipartisan mix. but, yes, there will be critic its. you'll hear about it on the senate side. they're saying this is a way to ease the issue. and it's important for democrats who of course have been fry to go make part of their 2014 argument income inequality as a potent campaign topic. >> and the white house is facing

seem punitive enough, then experts we've spoken to believe that russia might be emboldened to take further steps. but russia is not like iran. it was easy to impose sanctions on iran because iran doesn't really trade with the united states very much, doesn't have the ability to impose its own reciprocal sanctions. but russia is a big economy, a big oil and gas producer and has a tremendous amount of leverage particularly on gas supplies to this country and crucially gas supplies to europe. so it's not like you could impose sanctions upon russia and not expect some sort of punitive actions. >> thank you very much, richard. we apologize for any technical issues there. obviously it's difficult to get the reception going here. up next a shocking new study of a surging number of adults using
