up next. good evening, americans, welcome to "the ed show," live from miami. let's get to work. >> it's time to build it. >> the administration is now the only thing standing in the way of thousands of american jobs. >> increase the supply of american energy and build the keystone pipeline. >> the international police which use the energy scarcity as a weapon against us all are watching intently. >> energy vulnerability equals geopolitical vulnerability. >> there's no reason scientific or otherwise to block this project any longer. good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. we keep talking about this, people are going to be paying attention and will start moving on it. now we're get something movement. now we're getting to the 11th hour. the fight over the keystone x.l. pipeline is heating up big time in congress. earlier today, house democrats led by jan shicowski of chicago, sent a letter to secretary of
2:01 pm
state john kerry slamming the pipeline. they wrote, "the keystone x.l. would unlock huge reserves of carbon that scientist have warned need to stay in the ground if we are to avoid worsening climate change that could prove reversible." that's the bottom line. wait a minute, overall only 27 democrats signed on to the letter. now there's 198 democrats in the house. we've got work to do. i think that voters deserve to know where their representatives are on this issue. 27, not a good number. good start, a brave 27. many while, we know where we can find some democrats where they stand, and that would be none the other than louisiana senator mary landrieu who is making flat out a dishonest push for the keystone x.l. pipeline. at a budget hearing she made this bogus case for the project. >> a critical, in my view, piece of infrastructure that will

2:03 pm
can find experts everywhere. we've got a new one to the plate. a senator from louisiana. landrieu called the tarsands oil the cleanest barrel of oil produced in north america. we haven't heard that one. now we've been covering the stir for some time here on "the ed show." i've got to tell you, that one is a dandy. no question about it. new to us for sure. now let's go to nasa climate scientist james hanson from thursday's senate hearing. >> tarsands are among the dirtiest and most carbon intensive fuels. makes no sense to set up a system to exploit them in a major way. if we don't approve it, a lot of that tarsands will never be developed. it's -- the world is going to realize pretty soon that we've got to limit the amount of carbon we put in the atmosphere. and it's going to have to do that via a price on carbon, and that's going cause the most
2:04 pm
carbon-intensive things too be left in the ground, and that includes tar sands. >> dr. hansen is the scientist, he's the expert, he is spot on. now, senator landrieu, i'm not going to call you a liar on national television, but i'm very, very curious -- what's your source? can you take us to your source? because you said that it's the cleanest barrel of oil produced in north america. that's an unbelievable statement. now who are you quoting, senator? well, "the ed show" producers, we called senator landreieu's office and asked them to produce the source. who is she quoting? they have yet to get back to us. could it be russ gurling, ceo of transcanada? in fact, when you look at the research we've done on this, nobody from transcanada has even gone so far to say that it's the cleanest barrel of oil produced in north america. we're making some headway here.
2:05 pm
tarsands oil is one of the most toxic fossil fuels on the planet. oil company -- do you know what they've got to do? they have to heat the sands with toxic additives to extract this oil from the ground. mining tarsands oil creates three times more carbon emissions than conventional oil. it's a fact. oil companies are literally destroying the morrell forest in northern canada. they don't like it up there either. a study from the university of california shows people who live downwind of alberta's tarsands, well, they're getting blood cancer. senator landrieu has a long and a lot of nerve to come forward -- by calling this the cleanest barrel of produced oil in north america. i want to know the source, senator. i'm not trying to be a jerk here. i really want to interview this expert that you're quoting here, or is that just your opinion, or what somebody in louisiana told
2:06 pm
you? it's important to keep in mind that landrieu has a disturbing record of protecting the oil industry. everyone remembers this scene in the gulf of mexico after the deep water horizon rig exploded in april of 2010. in the middle of this mess, senator mary landrieu came on "the ed show" and stuck up for the oil industry. >> i just want you to know that i am not and no one that i know in congress is trying to protect bp. secondly, i'm glad to know that you are concerned about jobs because we made it to be. this industry, as bad as maybe some of the actors are and as irresponsible as some are, ed, one thing i hope you could realize -- this is a big industry. it's not just big oil, it's small companies, it's independent companies. and in my state alone, just louisiana, it's 300,000 people that go to work every day in
2:07 pm
this industry. ed, you can't just beat up on them. >> are you for unlimited caps? >> i'm for bp paying every single penny they owe -- >> unlimited does not fit with you? >> if it puts the industry out of work, no. >> that's factual. what is she -- what she's saying about jobs in louisiana, there's no question about that. but i'm just trying to find out if it's the cleanest barrel of oil produced in north america that's going to be coming through the keystone x.l. pipeline. there's a reason mary landrieu sticks up for oil. opensecrets.org is the source. they showed landrieu received under $500,000 from oil and gas companies from 2009 to 2014. there's a reason the senator from louisiana is calling tarsands oil the cleanest barrel of oil produced in north america. let's go back to the number of democrats who have their names on this letter that congresswoman jan shicowski and colleagues put together.
2:08 pm
the number's 27. that's not a very good number. that would be a very slow start if you're talking about 27 protesters. every democrat or should i say any democrat who is on record to be concerned about climate change should have their name on this letter that went to secretary kerry telling him no to the pipeline. what's the problem? well, it's big oil. one of the biggest lobbies in all of washington comes from the oil industry. i would venture to say that some of these democrats in congress, they don't want to become political targets because that's exactly what's going to happen. so accolades big time, and a hats off to those 27 democrats that had the courage to step up in the midst of citizens united and money floating all over the place, attacking people, running negative ad, to step up and say we should not be building this pipeline. get your cell phones out. i want to know what you think.
2:09 pm
tonight's question -- has big oil intimidated democrats not to sign this letter opposing the pipeline? text a for yes or b to no to 67622. go it our blog at ed.msnbc.com. we'll bring you the result later in the show. for more i want to bring you congresswoman jan chikowsky of illinois who was behind the letter. thank you very much for doing this. i appreciate it. i know that there's millions of americans crass america who are waiting for elected officials such as yourself to step up and make a bold statement here. and basically ask for the order. ask the secretary of state not to do this. you got 27 signatures. are democrats afraid to oppose the pipeline, congresswoman? >> well, first of all, i want to tell you, ed, there were just a few of us who were going to send this letter because we wanted to get it to secretary kerry now. he's the one that makes the natural -- the national interest determination and sthaends on it
2:10 pm
the president. but there were actually more people who wanted to get on the letter. so we opened it up to them. so kuehl there are more than 27 of us on the democratic statewide who are against the keystone x.l. pipeline. but certainly we could use more, we could -- you know, if your listeners would ask their members of congress to please convey to secretary kerry our opposition. but you know, we know the science is very clear that this is the dirtiest oil on the -- on earth, and certainly not the cleanest oil. we know about that in chicago. the coke brothers actually have a refinery here that -- that refines the tarsand oil. and what happens with the waste is it creates a huge pile called pet coke, a black, nasty pile that when the wind blows carries heavy metals throughout
2:11 pm
communities right now on the south side of chicago that are protesting them. this is very bad for people's health. from the beginning to the end. >> i've got to ask you -- it's terrible, no question about it. but the senator from louisiana says the tarsands oil is the cleanest barrel of oil produced in north america. what's your response to that? >> well, i certainly would be interested, as you are, in seeing the source of that because i have never seen anything other than saying there's at least 17% more carbon pollution from these tarsands. the threat of polluting aquifers that never could come back if they are polluted from this. so i don't know where that number comes from, where that information comes from. but the science i believe tell us -- >> it doesn't -- >> no. that this could be catastrophic and irreversible.
2:12 pm
>> do you know what that was by the senator? that was a promotional statement. that's what -- that's exactly what that was. it was almost as if she was reading the oil industry bullet points. i will give as much time to that source if possible if landrieu's office can produce that source. does the oil industry have a hold -- go ahead. >> i was just going to say, you know, she also talked about jobs when she was defending the oil industry. first of all, we -- i believe obviously in good jobs for construction workers. but we have mile and miles of pipes here in this -- in the united states that are already leaking that need to be fixed. we have underground water infrastructure that desperately needs to be fixed. if we would do an infrastructure bill, we could put far more people to work on good pipe jobs. and we don't need to build a pipeline that is going to take the oil and export it on it the
2:13 pm
world market. make no mistake. this is not for domestic use, ed. this is not going to help us with our oil supply. >> so congresswoman, i want to focus quickly on the politics of this. are more democrats going to put their name on the line to tell the president don't do this? >> i do believe that we will. in fact, we've had letters that have had more than -- than we put in. people wanted to get on this letter. we wanted to get it out quickly. i think the numbers going -- and we're also seeing on the polling data that the support by the american people is going down, and in canada, support for the pipeline is barely over 50% now and dropping. >> all right. the more we talk about it the more these numbers turn. no doubt about it. congressman jan schakowsky, thank for your time. i want to bring in ring of fire radio host and america's friend and attorney mike papantonio.
2:14 pm
how are you? did you know this of the cleanest barrel of oil produceded in north dakota? is that -- in north america, is that some good promotional stuff for you? >> it's another of those myths. we've heard plenty of myths. you remember we heard the bhith 20,000 jobs -- myth about 20,000 jobs being kraethed. when the lies cleared up, we saw 2 was 35 permanent jobs that would be established. you could build two starbucks and create more jobs. the next big lie was that the cost of oil was going to drop. and as we see, as we just heard, it's not going to drop at all because this is not oil for america. this is oil that goes off shore, it sids in ships, and then the oil company determines where the highest bidder is and then the oil is shipped there. the other lie is that it's not going to affect the environment. then we saw the studies that said a pinhole leak in a pipe can hospital 700,000 gallons of
2:15 pm
cruel a day into the most pristine aquifer in the country. then we also have to look at history. you started this with a very interesting thing about bp. we look at the hour of these companies that choose to externalize all their -- their disaster, we look at exxon valdez where they turned alaska black and poisoned and made the taxpayers basically pay for all that. bp, they destroyed an entire ecosystem that still hasn't recovered. and they make the taxpayers pay for that. we have to look at who we're dealing with, and we have to say you know what, i'll bet if a disaster -- if a catastrophe hops here i'll see the same conduct. >> if the president approves the pipeline which, of course, we'll deal with the oil coming over the border, what about the landowners and their recourse in nebraska? >> how do you see that? i mean -- >> very good point. >> this really going come down to the nebraska state supreme court if the president approves
2:16 pm
it, correct? >> let me tell you how important it is. nebraska had the girl scouts put together a consumer complaint, and they went after the governor who had ok'd the x.l. and all of a sudden, the trial court says, no, we're not going to do that. now it's going up on appeal. so all of a sudden there -- transcanada has to be able to say this to this administration that there is an approved route. right now as we speak, there snow approved route for the pipeline. ed, very important new an here, okay. this president is a constitutional law professor. this is what he did. he understands that there is state sovereignty issue that has to be resolved before the pipeline goes anywhere. it's not just nebraska where we're going to see the lawsuits. we're going to see them in south dakota, kansas, oklahoma, here's what's really interesting very quickly. it is this -- the president is talking like a addition might be around the corner. if he's saying that, he
2:17 pm
certainly understands that the appellate courts alone will hold this up for two years. so it might be a bright spot for keystone opponents. when the president says a decision's around the corner, i've look ad this, had it a long time, he also knows nebraska's saying hell no, not in our back yard. there has to be a resolution here. >> mike, ring of fire radio host and also -- i like to call you america's lawyer, dongone it. way to go. appreciate your time. i appreciate is so much. remember to answer the question t bottom of the screen and share your thoughts on twitter at edshow and on facebook. we want to know what you think. coming up, how to compete with hillary clinton. how's that going to work out? the rampant response panel weighs in on joe biden's chances. first, house democrats have had enough of darrell issa's antic. congressman matt cartwright weighs in on that. pampers swaddlers was there. congressman matt cartwright

the senate. i mean, they're two highly qualified people. so i don't think, zerlina, there's going to be any split of any base. i think at the end of the day they're going to say when you look at qualifications, when you look at experience, when you look at level-headedness, either one of them. what do you think? >> right. i think this a great place to be if you're a democrat. i think the focus should be on the midterm selections. 2016 is a long way away. anybody who runs in 2016 is going to need a democratic majority in the house and senate in order to be effective. we saw this under president obama. if you don't have that, then you can't get much done. so i think that hillary and joe biden both need to focus on the midterm elections. i think the super pacs need to, as well. all hands on deck here. >> yeah. >> all right, holland cooke, you told me months ago that you thought that ted cruz wanted to be the next big talker, that this was all, you know, a grandstanding effort by the senator from texas.

i've got one for you tonight -- you've got nothing but subpoenas surrounding some of these republican candidates. you've got low poll numbers. you've got bad job numbers. you know who's going to jump in? his name is dick cheney. he's got a new heart. he's ready to go. he's out there very interestingly right now getting after president obama. and i think that there's going to be a circle of republicans who are going to be saying, come on, dick, don't you have just one more run in you? >> he's so coy about it, too, isn't he? >> yeah. this is going to be another draft me as vice president except let's one go one step up. zerlina maxwell, holland cooke, great to have you with us tonight. thank you very much. coming up, polls are showing a shift in florida politics. i'm here in miami to find out what issues really matter most to the voters in this state. stay with us.

welcome back. the steel industry is facing major challenges due to bad trade trade deals. manufacturing is being outsourced to countries with lower wages and lower quality standard regulations. i visited the steelworkers in lorraine, ohio last week to see why american-made steel can't be beat. >> these workers are high-tech. i mean -- they're basically all looking for quality control. >> you're absolutely right. the people here are technical. they understand. they're passionate about it. these are the guys and girls who make it happen. >> we'll have more starting on monday as we start our series, "fighting chance: american steel" all negotiation week right here on "the ed show" on msnbc. we're coming right back.
2:54 pm
welcome back to "the ed show." this is a story for the folks who take a shower after work. less than eight months from the 2014 midterm elections and florida governor rick scott is already in big trouble. in the words of a top florida republican, quote, there is no way to sugarcoat this. it's awful. rick scott has been lagging in the polls for some time now. a quinnipiac poll in january found democratic opponent charlie crist with an eight-point lead.
2:55 pm
university of florida poll in february found crist with a seven-point lead. it got a whole lot worse when the miami herald crossed tabs from six internal gop polls. that's right, folks, a dozen members of rick scott's own party leaked some pretty damaging poll numbers to the press. the numbers show broad support for charlie crist across a wide array of demographics, according to one business interest statewide survey. crist leads scott by 34 percentage points in broward and miami-dade counties. get out the vote is going to be big. crist leads by six percentage points, according to a poll of republican-controlled state house districts. north florida is a republican stronghold, and crist leads scott by four percentage points there, which is almost unheard of. that's a cumulative 17-point shift in favor of democrats compared to the 2010 election.

this weekend i am down here in florida to talk to voters about the issues that matter to them with a focus group. we're going to be talking about jobs, health care and voting rights. annette taddeo chair of the miami-dade democratic party joins me tonight. annette, good to have you with me. what message does it send when you've got republicans leaking poll numbers to the press? >> wow. well, maybe they're trying to wake up their base, or maybe -- i don't really understand why they would leak these polls. but you know what? i just these republicans are really, really worried, although they're certainly seeing a little light at the end of the tunnel with what happened this week in the panhandle with alex sink. but i still think that we on the other side, the democrats, the opposite, we should wake up. we shouldn't look at these polls and say oh, we're going win. he is a horrible governor.
2:57 pm
we're going to be scott-free. that would be awesome. but the fact of the matter is we tend to vote less in midterm elections as democrats. we don't get out the vote as much. so if we don't do something to entice our base, get out our base, i believe we're going see a repeat of 2010 in florida. >> why do do you think that sink lost that special election on the gulf coast around tampa? i know that that's a hard place. the republicans have had it for a long time. and it was a very close race. it was only two percentage points. but do you view that as a tea leaf that it's going to be awfully tough in florida in 2014? >> no, i don't, because it's a very anglo saxon older area. and that's not what the rest of florida looks like. florida is very diverse. and certainly, those hispanic voters, african american voters, they vote for democrats, and they're going to vote for democrats, if we can get them out to vote.
2:58 pm
which is why we have to work so hard on the get out the vote. and also the base. it was a base election. and i think that was something that should have been done a little bit more from the democratic side to entice the base to go out just like the republicans did. >> on wednesday, scott said that he would back a senate proposal here in florida to allow undocumented immigrants to qualify for in-state tuition, so long as they meet certain requirements. a couple of questions here. is this progress or is this just an attempt to pander to the latino and minority voters ahead of the election? >> it is amazing what an election will do to change this governor. this governor has been flip-flopping on a lot of things. but especially to appeal to the hispanic vote.
2:59 pm
and this is all that is. it is very obvious that he still -- he still uses the word illegal to call these students who came here to no fault of their own, some of them very young. but yet he wants to change his mind about this because he is trying to appeal to the hispanic vote. i think we're all going to see right through that. >> what about -- he says that -- >> of course we're for immigrants and they're going to try to do certain things here and there. but at the end of the day that. >> don't. just look at the cpac event, where ann coulter said the
3:00 pm
browning of america. i mean, this kind of comments are the comments that totally insult us as hispanics. and we know that they're just pandering and trying to say things, but at the end of the day, they just want our vote. >> okay. annette taddeo, thanks for your time tonight. >> thank you. >> chair of the miami-dade democratic party. and of course we're down here in miami for the weekend. we're doing a focus group tomorrow with a number of voters here in the miami area, and we'll bring that story to you in the coming days.
