very good morning. i'm veronica de la cruz. nice to see you. late breaking news. eight people dead doubling early estimates. this picture tells it all. a before shot showing a quiet neighborhood, then homes and acres of land wiped out after a rain soaked hillside gave way. nbc's chris palone has details. >> reporter: rescuers resume searching for victims of a massive mud slight in washington state after geologists say it was safe. officials aren't sure how many victims they might find in the days ahead. >> we have a road there. the road is a mile -- buried in a mile of this muck. there may be people that are -- that are in their cars. >> reporter: as 100 rescue workers look for survivors on land, washington's governor toured the damage by air observing a square mile of mud 60 feet deep in some places that came crashing down on an entire

neighborhood on sunday without warning. an entire neighborhood wiped out. >> the hillside came down and pushed it across the road. >> rescuers tried to save others. among those rescued a 6 month old baby. overnight rescuers could hear voices coming from the mud but it was too dangerous. >> mud was too thick and deep. they did not hear people -- they couldn't hear any signs of life once they got closer to the structure where they thought it was and so the decision based on safety was that they back out. >> reporter: mud slide blocked the river making another natural disaster in the area, a flood, a real possibility. the search continues at first light. chris palone. overseas as to what's expected to be a delicate diplomatic test for president obama. the president is scheduled to hold a joint press conference later this hour with the prime minister of the netherlands. it was supposed to be a routine

round of meetings with the allies. russia has changed that. nbc's danielle leigh is joining us from washington. good morning. >> reporter: veronica, good morning. how successful he is at rallying allies against russia can have a major impact on how we handle this crisis in ukraine. as russian troops make their home in crimea, president obama arrives in the netherlands. >> what we've seen the president do in recent weeks and this week is bring the world together in support of ukraine. >> reporter: in an emergency meeting the president will try to convince nations of the g7 nation to stand up to vladimir putin. >> he's a bully. >> reporter: obama has already imposed sanctions on russian officials. now some lawmakers say it's time

for widespread economic penalties, maybe military assistance. >> it may come to small arms. >> maybe medical supplies. radio equipment, things that they can use to protect themselves. defensive posture weapon systems. >> reporter: putin is building his troops up along ukraine's eastern border and ukrainian leaders worry he could be preparing to move in. >> the situation becoming more explosive than it used to be a week ago. >> reporter: with this trip president obama hopes to de-escalate tensions and find a diplomatic solution. >> president obama heads to belgium later this week with a meeting with nato leaders. back to you, veronica. >> danielle, thank you. a race against time off the coast of texas after a nearly 170,000 gallon oil spill. hundreds of people are working to remove the oil which extends 12 miles off shore in the gulf of mexico. the barge was carrying a million

gallons of fuel when it collided with a ship on saturday. scattered wildlife damage has been reported and it is blocking access to the houston ship channel, one of the busiest in the world. at least two cruise ships were stranded unable to dock. now to another race against time. happening right now in the indian ocean for that missing malaysian airliner. this morning china state news agency says a plane crew has spotted a white square shaped object. let's get to ian williams live in perth, australia. ian, how hopeful are searchers? >> reporter: good morning, veronica. it was spotted on the first trip out to the search area by the chinese planes. now what we do know is that they say they saw two large white square objects and a large number of smaller white objects, which were spread over several square miles. now, we do now know that they spotted this on their way back

to perth from a height of 33,000 feet. now after they've spotted it they radioed in the coordinates to the australian coordinating center here and they also let a number of ships know, including their own ice breaker that is heading to the area. now the australians then asked the american p-8 search plane to go and take a look for itself, but they couldn't see anything even though they allowed for a potential drift of this debris. we have this chinese spotting but not confirmed at this point by any of the other aircraft. so a very big search out there. this does seem to be a very hopeful sighting, but as yet we're still waiting for more information to come through. >> ian, we are standing by for that. ian williams live for us in perth. now to sports with my good friend, richard lieu i. hello, richard. >> good monday morning to you. we are in the sweet 16 on this

monday. many ncaa turney brablgt ain't so sweet. why? wichita state's 35 unbeaten game ended by kentucky. 1.7 seconds though and the game was not enough for them to do that. eighth seed kentucky wins 78-76. they're into the sweet 16. they join louisville, michigan and tennessee in the midwest semi-finals. iowa state's run still has legs. seconds left a lay-up gives them the lead. north carolina tried to call time-out and a controversial ending. refs say, sorry, there's no time left. three seed iowa state wins 85-83. joining them in the east, michigan state, virginia and connecticut. here's another upset to stalk about. stanford, good nights kansas. number two seed jayhawks fall to the ten seed 60-57. add another surprise win from dayton plus ucla and florida, they fill in the south region.

"the wall street journal" reports discussions are for a streaming service that would allow apple's set top boxes to

election silver correctly predicted the winner in all 50 states. michigan's governor says the state will not immediately recognize the hundreds of same-sex weddings saturday. this after an appeals court put on hold a ruling that tossed out the state's ban on gay marriage. an appeal will decide whether to continue this no sooner than wednesday. a raid on his statehouse office and home, the u.s. attorney's office, fbi, irs and state police carried off boxes of evidence. the 52-year-old democrat promises he will serve out the remainder of his term. a bill is brewing in massachusetts that would for bid divorcing parents from having sex in their home with other partners unless the court gives the go ahead. that's until a divorce is finalized and all financial and custody issues are resolved. and former secretary of state hillary clinton dodging the 2016 question like countless times before.

there. the momentum is with republicans. they're pointing out that nate silver made a similar prediction that republicans would take control of the senate in 2012 at one point. we know how that did not actually come to fruition. i think unfortunately for the democrats they wouldn't have a top of the line ticket for the white house to help carry them. i think they're trying to raise money and they are warning they have to come out to the polls. >> what do you think of that for a strategy? will it work? >> they're going to target individual senate races which are important. the problem with them is they're on a little bit of defense over president obama's approval ratings, over obama care. republicans are feeling they'll have the momentum. >> the president just touched down in amsterdam. his overseas agenda will be focusing heavily around the crisis in ukraine. obviously a delicate discussion here for the president when it comes to sanctions. david, what do you think he should do here? >> well, the president is going to make a big case to the nato allies and european allies that they need to tighten sanctions,

put even more sanctions on russia and to make president putin feel the pain there. the president is already feeling some pressure back home domestically from some in congress on both sides of the aisle that you need to do more, maybe send military aid to the ukraine. i think there will be discussions about that. whether they'll go that far and discuss that, it will be likely. i think they'll have that discussion. the president is speaking to leaders of china and other asian countries. they're trying to develop a consensus worldwide and have putin feel like he's no longer part of the world discussion and world economy. >> in april obama is headed to malaysia. it will be the first trip for a u.s. president in 50 years. it comes at this inopportune time because of the missing airliner. what issues will come up? >> international issues. what happened to the plane, we don't know yet. how did malaysia lose the plane? it's an unprecedented situation. the white house says they're
