trade center. a day of intense heartbreak. malaysian officials say their loved ones are likely gone. searchers are racing to find the black boxes before the pings paid. but the weather is forcing the hunt to stop today. ian williams joins us live from perth. this searches has been described as looking for a needle in a haysta haystack, but they haven't even found the hay stack yet. >> reporter: that's right. that was a quote that came from the deputy head of the defense staff here in australia at a press briefing earlier today at the air force base. he also said until something is found and it hasn't been yet, everything is speculation. warned in this part of australia, when we talk about things being close, we talk about hundreds of miles.

so that was a fatherirly down b assessme assessment. that was underlined by the suspension of all search activities because of appalling weather out in the search area. gail force winds, waves of up to 20 feet and very poor visibility just made it impossible for them to get any flights out there, even though they have so many more assets now in theater here. very frustrating there relatives, many of whom as we have seen are refusing to accept that their loved ones are dead until they do see evidence, until they see something pulled out of the indian ocean. that hasn't happened yet. the search is suspended and we're hearing a rumor that it might be sus he sapended for an 24 hours. the weather remains pretty dreadful. >> all right. ian, thank you. now we want to get the latest in the catastrophe in washington state. the search for survivors following the massive mudslide

continues. death toll is now up to 14. and more than 176 people are still missing. the race to find victims is not getting any easier because many areas remain vulnerable to another slide. >> reporter: the desperate search for survivors continues in this tiny rural community where a waufl mud buried everything in its path leaving behind unthinkable destruction. more than 30 homes now buried under 15 feet of mud and debris. >> it's about a mile long. probably 1,000 feet wide. probably an estimate of 15 million cubic yards of material. >> reporter: lives torn apart, families hope for the best. >> i want to know where my husband is, you know. i just need to know. >> reporter: searching on the ground on and in the air, hover craft have been brought into help navigate the slide zone.

leaders, we lettered from russian's foreign minister lavrov who basically referred to the g-8 as an informal club, saying there were no membership cards for entry. so here was an emergency meeting that took place late yesterday. the president bringing together basically europe, canada and japan where they came out and made an announcement basically saying russia had been kicked out of the g-8 until in its language it changes course. putin who was supposed to be hosting the sochi summit has been told that has been canceled. instead the g-7 will meet separate the lthely in brussels. there were also sanctions threatened if russia goes further into ukraine. the desire was to bring russia into these western type clubs, but now according to the former ambassador, that ear ra is over.

morning after pill, they think it violates religious freedom. how strong of is case is that? >> if we're trying to predict the court, i would say it's a jump ball. part of the reason there is so much emotion around this argument today in front of the court. there has been no clear line that has been drawn yet about exactly how far an employer's rights go in deciding some of the personal practices of employees. should the boss say whether you get birth control pills in your health insurance plan. and it's a very emotional issue for people. >> do you think this could very well define religious freedom in this country? >> well, it will define how far a company, a store, an employer could go. for instance, what if a dry cleaner said we don't want to allow people to be our patrons if they live together out of wedlock or if they're gay or if they practice-of if a woman

works, maybe we at the present time don't approve of that. i think many say those are decisions i to make for myself. >> reminds you of the situation in arizona a few weeks ago and how the employers were are coming up and saying, hey, i don't want to service this person because of their backgrounds and what they chose in their life. but now supporters of this mandate will say to you that this really goes beyond religious rights. this is about women's rights. and even further than that, this is about health right when it comes to women's access to birth control. is that what is at issue, as well? >> exactly. those are the two colliding values. and if you look at the polls today, vast majority of americans believe birth control should be open and available and legal and accessible even among religious groups.

richard, you want to talk about some base jumping. >> world trade center about to open, finishing the construction of that very large building. 1776 feet tall. evidently the first video has just been released. base jumpers jumping 1300 feet on to the ground below. no permits here. the three were arrested. it is illegal in new york to jump off of any building that is 50 feet or higher. and this is just a week after that report of a teenaged boy breaking in and getting to the very top. >> isn't one a worker? >> one is a construction worker. >> they can't put it on youtube, they probably wouldn't have been arrested. >> if they put it on. in any case, the video got out. they devote 200 officers, surveillance cameras and other technology to survey this
