good morning. welcome to weekends with alex witt. here is what's happening now. we have brand-new clues in the hunt for missing malaysian airline flight 370. an aircraft just spotted three suspicious objects in the new search zone over southern indian ocean. they are described as red and orange. unclear if they belong to the missing jet liner. they have shifted 700 miles northeast after new analysis of radar data showed the plane was traveling much faster and burned more fuel than originally thought. new zealand and the australian air force found debris. an australian pilot says the object seen by chinese officials have been marked with buoys to ships can find them. the transport minister met with relatives of the missing plane. kier simmons is going to join us

from kuala lumpur. what came out of the meting today? >> reporter: scrutiny in particular from the families. he has held news conferences. he has not gone to see the relatives. they have complained here and in beijing they have not been getting the information they wanted. they haven't gotten it because the authorities haven't had the information or able to tell them answers to the questions they have been asking. clearly a move by the authorities to try to correct that and try to talk directly to the families. the transportation minister going to see them, gather at the hotel. this is what he had to say after he emerged from tla meeting. >> at the end of the day, the only one to know where are their

loved ones. when i communicate to them this one question i don't have the answers to at the moment and the fact it came to them sincerely, i think they appreciated it. i think that just needs the strength to continue for another day. >> reporter: the relatives pretty much pleading with the transportation minister to treat this still as a search and rescue operation. he said he responded to that by saying, look, we absolutely will. if there is a glimmer of hope that anyone survived, we would not let that go. at the same time, alex, we now hear these chinese aircraft spotted three items in the ocean. ships are on their way there. as you have heard many times, but ships are on their way to try to look at that. of course, they need to get eyes on it, get it on board, try to

identify it. it will be a long process to try to go from where we are now, we are seeing things that look suspicious to a point where they might be able to say that really is evidence of flight 370. >> yeah. what an emotional roller coaster for the grieving families. you get a sense, keir, that they have gone from anger to frustration to sadness to just a sense of okay, what more can you tell us? i mean it's just unbelievable to try to put yourself in their position. >> reporter: yeah, it really is. i don't think you can say necessarily the relatives are going to be less angry. the chinese relatives in beijing have been furious. they are planning to travel to kuala lumpur. they want to be more engaged than they have been. i don't think they are going to be any less angry. some of that is the emotions

arlington, washington with the latest. it is a grim task they have ahead. what's going on? >> reporter: it's a difficult, difficult day about to start here in washington state, alex. the executive director of snohomish county, when asked if the 90 people on the missing list were really feared dead in this mudslide. he said, for the first time, really, you want to hold out hope. at some point, you have to fear the worst. that is what they are doing this morning even though they will continue the search. it is going to be a brutal day. there's no other way to put it. it is pouring rain. locals in the pacific northwest tell us, even for them, this is a lot of rain. there's a flash flood alert. they are dealing with, almost impossible search conditions. that's why they are saying it's taking so long to recover bodies in the rubble of that mudslide that hit exactly a week ago

his? >> yes, he was claiming at the bank. >> they said we are looking for you. he said i'll be sure to swing by as fast as i can. that hasn't happened yet. >> can't way to see how this works out. thanks. >> now to politics. chris christie is heading to las vegas. he's looking to put bridgegate behind him. it's a day after the report from a law firm his administration hired and paid for by tax dollars. >> it's nice you eventually got to the question. it follows the mandate i set out when we commissioned the review. one thing was clear from the beginning. i told them to find the truth, no matter where it led and turn over every rock they were able to get to to get to the bottom of what happened and to let me know what the truth was. >> now, governor christie

announced the immediate resignation of david samson. he ran the agency that had oversight over the george washington bridge. joining me now, wanda summers and ed o'keefe. good morning you two. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> morning. >> the tone of the press conference is different than the one held in january. let's take a look. >> it's nice you eventually got to the question. it's so infirmed, i'm not answering it. it's amusing when you write stories about things you are entitled to. you are entitled to the answers when i get them. >> what did you make of this press conference? do you think the governor is going to be able to put bridgegate behind him or not so much? >> no. he's trying. he has this press conference that harkins back to the style we have been familiar with and really helped put him on the map in the first place. i think there's concern a report
4:53 am
commission by the governor and conducted by his lawyers is not necessarily the be all, end all. there's still a federal investigation. state lawmakers are looking into it. there's the possibility washington may get into it. not necessarily needed if a federal investigation is under way. clearly, he's trying to remind the republican world, if you will, and voters generally that he's still here, he could be a factor in 2016 and he's trying to rehabilitate his image. >> this report, again, commissioned by the christie administration puts the blame of bridgette kelly and david wildstein. they both declined to participate in the reports. kelly is saying the only credible investigation is being conducted by the u.s. attorney's office. put this in perspective. all this publicity in the discussion. >> i have to agree with ed.
4:54 am
it is rather interesting that this report was commissioned by the governor, done by a law firm with ties to him. here is what it means for christie in general. he's been fighting allegations he fostered a culture that allowed this to happen for quite some time. it happened at an important moment as things are jetting up for 2016. chris christie and others in las vegas this weekend. what he's trying to do right now, to deal with the tarnished image to remind people, as ed noted, he canceled in 2016 and to sweep away the notions. there will be many more questions over the next couple weeks. >> you bring up what's happening in las vegas. ed, to you, the sheldon primary. do you think this is sort of the first gop primary for 2016 with regard to who comes out on top and gets his money? >> yeah, it's being billed as that for sure.
4:55 am
this is a guy that spent a lot of money in the 2012 cycle. some say needlessly or not as smart as he could have. >> that is a lot of money. most of it went to newt gingrich before he transferred over to mitt romney. >> exactly. the thinking is now, he wants to and is willing to spend much more this cycle. he made clear to my colleagues and others he's looking for someone who can win, not just pop up and disappear during the primary process. that's why you are seeing the guys go to las vegas this week. they are trying to make the case, i'm the guy. throw money behind me, we can make music together and win the nomination. >> we wants someone who can win. he maintains passion for an aggressive foreign policy, particularly in regards to israel, wants a candidate to share him. who might he back? >> we don't know yet.
4:56 am
one thing i would like to know is the potential 2016 field has a lot of governors in it. they don't have a lot of hands on experience with foreign policy. they are not dealing with the decisions on a day-to-day basis. lawmakers on capitol hill are having. that will make this race interesting given the interest sheldon adelson is having. you have topnotch folks in vegas. it's closed off to the press. it will be interesting to see what details leak out. >> ed, a big name not in las vegas is rand paul. he had a long standing family commitment. can they afford not to attend? >> oh, sure. you know, it's still only 2014. we have elections in november. these guys feel the need to be there and working on it. for years bush or doyle, they aren't that. they have to do more legwork to get ahead in 2016.
4:57 am

kohler will make your reality a dream. the names you may not have noticed in the chris christie meeting and what you need to know about the internal investigation. this is the moment in the scandal when chris christie hopes to put bridgegate behind him. on thursday, the internal investigation ordered by his administration paid for by new jersey taxpayers and conducted by the same lawyer hired to represent the governor's office on related matters, that review, not surprisingly, cleared his name. friday, yesterday, governor christie held a press coen
