coast. five deaths have been reported. there are reports of fires, landslides, homes destroyed, and power outages. it sent people scrambling for safety. tsunami warnings were issued for panama. there is a tsunami advisory in effect for hawaii. 300 female inmates escape from a chilean jail. >>. >> reporter: these sirens went off shortly after the massive earthquake struck off the coast of northern chile. chilean tv broke in with images from the first moment the earthquake hit. causing drivers to clog major highways. the navy reported the first wave hit the coast within 45 minutes of the earthquake. it struck northwest of the

mining firm. it reported no serious damage to operations. the sub secretary of the interior ministry appealed to residents who evaluated from coastal regions to not return until they get the all-clear. neighboring peru and bolivia felt the effects. in the bo live began city, panicked residents poured into the street and clung to whatever belongings they could carry. francis. >> chi the the ceo of genera motors said she's sorry about a defection linked to 13 deaths and millions of recalls. moving forward gm will dot right thing barra said. she faced tough questions tuesday from lawmakers and at times didn't answer district questions. tracy pots is live in washington. >> reporter: good morning. she didn't have the answers.

they're still investigating over at gm. it's likely what she'll tell the senate subcommittee. we're expecting another contentious hearing. this one before the consumer product and safety panel. general motors ceo mary barra faces more questions today in the senate. >> my sincere apologies to everyone who has been affected. >> but apologies weren't enough for victim's families or lawmakers frustrated when barra could not explain why gm failed to replace faulty ignition switches when they first detected the problem almost a decade ago. >> i cannot tell you why it took so long for a safety defect to be announced for this program. i can tell you we will find out. >> why in the world would a company with a stellar reputation, general motors, purchase a part that did not meet its own specifications?

until fall or maybe even later now to get the vehicles fixed. a strong declaration from president obama. the health care slaw here to stay. the public victory lap after a confirmation that 7.1 million people signed up. it surpasses the white house's initial goal. the late surge is an unexpected comeback after chafs widely considered a disastrous rollout. overcoming skepticism and fear of something new is hard. a lot of times folks prefer the devil they know to the devil they don't. but this law is doing what it is supposed to do. it's working. in a few weeks we should learn more details about enrollment like how many healthy, young people signed up. as far as the midterms is concerned, it's a major sticking point. the search continues in washington for the remains of 20 people still missing in the deadly mud slide that happened

almost two weeks ago. there are 28 confirmed deaths in the disaster. recovery crews are catching a break as flood waters recede. it's allowing them to look for bodies in areas that had been inassessable. kurt gregory brings us the latest. >> it's a piece of a small rural town. >> reporter: now it's a square mile of mud and debris. >> we have logs and homes and all the mud and rock and clay piled on top of each other. >> the hill didn't slide away. the bottom blew out with an incredible amount of energy came across this debris field and pushed all the material. >> reporter: crews made up of national guard, search professionals, and volunteers from nearby communities dig through the material. >> the debris field is up to 75 feet deep in places. >> reporter: it's a grim, heart-wrenching task. picking through scattered possessions, and hoping to bring

maybe months will be closely scrutinized by republicans. >> interesting to hear the break down once we get it. you can't have headlines without paul ryan. will, won't he. this one from the washington post caught my eye. it reads junior year, and paul ryan has to pick a major. especially after david, the current chairman of the ways and means committee announced he would retire. many agrees it's the path he needs to choose. >> he has to choose between going after the ways and means committee chairmanship, which is a more powerful than the budget committee chairman, or thinking about running for president in 2016. he could double major. he could go and get that chairmanship, but also, end up running for president. and right now, it's very unclear what exactly he wants do. he made it clear, he wants that chairmanship. he hasn't ruled out the possibility of also running for
