new information on malaysia flight 370 is calling it encouraging. they picked up a ping consistent with aircraft black boxes. >> clearly this is a most promising lead and probably in the search so far it's probably the best information that we have had. and, again, i would ask all of you to treat this information cautiously and responsibly until such time as we can provide an unequivocal determination. i need to be honest with you, it could take some days before the information is available to establish whether these detections can be confirmed as being from mh 370. in very deep oceanic water nothing happens fast. >> but still promising.

ian williams joins me live from perth australia, what can you tell me about the latest efforts to verifying the signals in the search for the missing plane? >> reporter: good morning, francis. they're working to try to reacquire the signal that they spotted twice over the weekend f. they can reacquire it and that's what they're trying to do, using the u.s. navy's code ping locator dragged behind an australia vessel, if they can reacquire it, that will help them better establish where it's coming from. once they have done that, the next stage will be to launch an underwater vehicle which is being carried aboard that ship. the purpose of that vehicle will be to scan the ocean floor, initially using sonar but potentially then using cameras, looking for the black box, looking for wreckage. now the challenge they face, and this is one of the reasons why today the search coordinator was so cautious is that the water

there is 2.8 miles deep and that is roughly the limits of the operation of that -- of the underwater vehicle they're carrying. so it may entail them taking out other submersibles. at the same time, the battery life on the black box is beginning to run out. they talk about it being for 30 days. we don't know how much more life there is in the black boxes. so certainly there are still challenges as they try and reacquire that signal, francis. >> certainly a crucial next couple of days. thank you so mch. it's being called a potential break through in the treatment of advanced breast cancer. the new pfizer drug cut in half the risk that breast cancer would worsen or progress. in clinical trials the drug stopped tumors for growing for abaverage of 20 months. that's twice as long as current treatments. it works by targeting certain proteins that cancer hijacks to

help tumor cells grow. the fda granted breakthrough priority status in the process. a girl and her family are headed to dry ground this morning after a dramatic rescue in the middle of the pacific. the san diego family was one year into an around the world sailing trip when their boat broke down 1,000 miles off the coast of mexico and the little girl became seriously ill. miguel almaguer picks up the story. >> reporter: the family's rescue played out like a hollywood movie. a address key team plunging into the pacific to reach their doomed sailboat and bring them to safety. the kaufmans long dreamed of sailing the road. >> some people like to be all alone and some people don't. >> reporter: this was their trip of a lifetime. documenting their journey with 3-year-old cora and baby lyra. they departed for the sea of cortes two years ago. on this latest leg the family

oscar pistorius is expected to take the stand in his own murder trial. he shot his girlfriend to death at his home on valentine's day last year. he says he thought she was an intruder. he is charged with premeditated murder. mike joins us live from south africa. one witness testified this morning before they get to pistorius, but has the stage been set for the star athlete? >> yeah, francis, there is keen anticipation here because it's

expected that oscar pistorius will begin his testimony sometime today. but another witness is on the stand first. it's a forensic pathologist that has been giving his interpretation of the death scene in the bathroom in pistorius's apartment. this is back when the shooting took place last year. pistorius already had a tough day in court. he became sick as the pathologist described and gave his interpretation of the sequence of shots and wounds, et cetera. his lead attorney talked about the witnesses he will call in for the blade runner's defense. 14 to 17 witnesses including a witness to talk about vulnerability. presumably a psychiatric evidence witness who will talk about the difference between how a reasonable person would act to a perceived lethal threat and how a reasonable person with a life long disability would react to the same threat. but the most important witness, pistorius himself expected to begin telling his story on the

stand some time today. >> thank you. joining me to discuss the importance of his testimony is former manhattan prosecutor faith jenkins. thank you for being with us this morning. >> good morning. >> by putting oscar pistorius on the stand can that be seen as a sign of weakness. maybe desperate measure, last ditch here to avoid conviction? >> no, there's no other way around getting his testimony out. he said from the very beginning this was an accident. reeva, the only other person there at the time is dead. prosecutors have charged him with murder. they say it's premeditated so it is up to him at this point to take the witness stand and tell the judge it was an accident and really he's in the fight for his life at this point. >> sure and especially if they show that he acted like a reasonable person did in the event that he didn't know that his girlfriend was on the other side of the girl. >> that's what he is saying. when he went and got the gun, he walked by the bed and thought she was still in bed and thought there was an intruder inside of the bathroom and i suspect he's going to say because of his

disability he felt particularly vulnerable and that's why he opened fire without ever knowing who was on the other side of the door and the question is, is the judge going to deem that to be reasonable behavior even for someone in his circumstances. >> important to note there's no trial by jury in south africa so it will be up to the judge solely to decide his fate. how much of an impact will come from the level of emotion we have seen from oscar pistorius, knowing in the past he has gotten physically sick and many times we see him covering his ears weeping there. how much will that come into place. >> i think that she notices. when you have a trial like this that someone has died you look at the defendant to see if they have any reaction to the testimony taking place but it's time to get up and tell the story and i wonder how he's going to be able to handle that emotionally if just listening to the testimony he's cried and left and also vomited in court, how he's now going to be able to get up on the witness stand and convince this judge, it was an

we head into the midterm. it's tackle air quotes here. the vulnerable incumbent protection program. top democrats stratigizing for their at risk. they're also taking the lead on bills tailored to their campaigns. common practice pretty much around this time? >> i think so. especially if you're the democrats right now and trying to maintain control of the senates at all costs. there's a lot of alarms going on among democratic circles that they're at the risk of losing the senate which would be a big blow to president obama's agenda. harry reid is going to try to put some of these in the spotlight. they're trying to keep folks 65 eligible for medicare. they'll put a vote for there. it's a big issue. the republican candidate is supporting a budge that will bump that up to 70. they'll be doing that around the

swing states where these races are tight. it's a good way to give them publicity and out in front of issues they think is going to help them. >> whatever it takes to get them to win. how about this, 2016 and another name we're hearing for the gop. jeb bush. all the speculation about whether he's running for president is getting him more attention than if he entered the race. >> the bushes are making a come back right now. but jeb bush made remarks at an event for his father's 25th anniversary of his presidency and there's a lot of speculation that republicans and big fun raisers, donors want jeb bush to get into the race. they don't want to have a candidate that might be outside the mainstream and jeb bush is looking like mt. wake of what's happened to chris christie as the best possible mainstream candidate. there's a lot of pressure. he has not completely embraced it just yet. he is making the rounds and
