racial hierarchy must take on many forms and if we cannot accept white people as allies to dismantle the race's hierarchy, we have no chance to destroy it. now with alex wagner starts now. warning to governor chris christie -- your big comeback campaign has been compromised. it's monday, april 7th, and this is "now." >> the fact of the matter is i had nothing to do with this. >> the federal grand jury started to hear witness testimony in the investigation. >> think ear starting to mine for more information. >> abc has carc tized this as confirmation that the prel preliminary inquiry of the governor's office has become a criminal investigation. >> we want to know why did bridget kelly send that e-mail? >> i don't know. it mystifies me on every level. >> you don't bring in your tarpies into a federal grand jury. >> he was in for two hours.

1:02 pm
u.s. attorney paul fishman. it is an indication that wildstein may have been granted immunity. his lawyer -- immunity his lawyers have been asking for since january. that report is unconfirmed by nbc news. but it comes just on the heels of another report suggesting an expanding federal inquiry. late friday, abc news discovered this man, christie press secretary michael drewniak, gave testimony to a federal grand jury in newark. while his lawyer told abc that his client was there as a witness and not as a target, his very presence before a federal grand jury is significant. why? chairman of the state supercommittee investigation, john wisniewski, offered his take this weekend on "up" with steven kornacki. >> not going to be calling people in front of a grand jury to figure out whether or not a crime was committed. they're going to be operating under some time o assumption that there's something that they're looking for testimony to

corroborate. >> in other words, the calling of witnesses could indicate a deepening criminal probe. and adding to christie's manic monday, those reports, all those reports are coinciding with a new deep dive on the culture of the christie administration written by the new yorker's ryan lizza. that story offers clues as to what mr. drewniak and wildstein might be testifying about, detailing christie's mounting anxiety about the bridge scandal, he relates the following -- on december 5th, michael drewniak told the governor he'd had dinner with wildstein the previous evening. he said wildstein said on september 11th, the third day of the traffic jam, he had told christie about the traffic issue when the two men were together at a 9/11 anniversary event. christie told drewniak that wildstein and port authority deputy executive director bill ba row knee, quote, had to go and the following day he forced them to resign. after noting that the governor
1:04 pm
personally edited a statement on wildstein's departure, lizza notes drewniak texted wildstein on december 8th, you are a great friend and this too shall pass. four months later, that has proved to be wishful thinking. joining me now is the politics editor for business insider hunter walker, and from washington, editor in chief of main justice, mary jacoby. hunter, in terms of the federal grand jury calling witnesses, what does this tep us about the scope of the inquiry? >> it says it's moving forward and it says -- it's really a growing indication that at the very least members of cristy's senior staff could face charges if not the governor himself. and one thing that's really important is that david wildstein -- and this is the guy who was on the receiving end of bridget kelly's time for traffic problems e-mail, he's the one who replayed, "got it." his attorney said very early on
1:05 pm
that wildstein would talk if he was offered a deal. >> right. >> so the mere fact that he's brought in doesn't just mean they're interrogating him because he's refused to cooperate with the other investigation. it means he's testifying. if you've got a guy who's testifying, you've got other witnesses who are coming in, it looks like they've got something they're working with that they're trying to cooperate. >> and mary, your site, main justice, notes that what these investigators could be looking for isn't necessary new stuff but corroboration and points out fishman, the lead investigator here, may already know whether former port authority deputy executive director baroney can corroborate wildstein's claim he told christie about the lane closures. and charlie mckenna, chief counsel, what can he provide in the way of corroboration? >> well, just to introduce it, we broke this story at main jus cities last night, the david wildstein meeting with the
1:06 pm
prosecutors. so our story was a longer look at where fishman, the u.s. attorney in new jersey, might be going with this. we also did mention that the governor's former chief counsel, charlie mckenna, who used to be the second in command in the u.s. attorney's office there under christie has also met with prosecutors, but that was earlier on. we don't know as much about that. the corroboration, s they need to know what happened and that is still very unclear despite the governor's internal investigation. there's still a lot of questions. and what they need to do now is start cutting deals. i think we see wildstein coming in. they're starting to cut deals, immune news people, perhaps offer them immunity in exchange for their testimony. >> mary, one would think that on that list of people who are getting immunized, bridget kelly's name has got to be somewhere near the top of the list. as yet we don't know if she's been offered anything. is that right? >> we don't know. a lot of this is opaque and just reading the tea leaves in general, but the fact that we don't have any indication she's
1:07 pm
been in to talk to prosecutors and we know that both wildstein and bridget kelly said specifically we won't talk unless we get this immunity from prosecution. now we know wildstein is talking, so we can -- >> ergo we think he's been immunized. >> exactly. >> hunter, before this segment started we were talking about, you know, this may come down to a he-said-she-said situation if there is no physical evidence, no texts, no e-mail, nothing that we can point to, a smoking gun as you were talking about. and it seems like christie was immunizing himself from that back and forth by trying to asatsz nate the character of all these internal ailds. my question is, if they all then go talk to the investigator, patrick fishman on this, that's a serious issue for christie because none of those people talked to him and his lawyers more specifically in the vindicating report that was released ten days ago. >> well, as you're pointing out, the battle lines have been
1:08 pm
clearly drawn. that report that christie's attorneys put out basically said david wildstein and bridget kelly are the only people who had any foreknowledge and participation in this bridge closure scheme. so they were totally thrown under the bus. he's called their behavior stupid and unacceptable and just really given up on them completely. so they are facing trouble on their own and also have no incentive to kind of stand up for him. that being said, what could they have here? one thing i found in the master report that was really interesting is it seemed to be reflecting a confidence by christie and his attorneys that there was no, as you say, smoking e-mail here. and the attorney confirmed that to me. so what these people testifying could have is, you know, corroboration that spoken word conversations occurred between chris christie and his aides talking about the orchestration of this. another thing that i think is really, really important is in the entire coverage of the investigation, we still don't know what the mote ifr is here.
1:09 pm
>> right. >> we're kind of operating with the assumption that this was retaliation against ft. lee mayor sokolich for not endorsing christie but we don't know. they may have been able to reveal the motive and there may have been further evidence contained in that. >>? terms of the smoking e-mail and what we have or don't have, how do you think randy mastro's report will figure into the line of questioning here? could that be used as almost a backboard in which to question some of these -- >> i think that is really important. i think what some witnesses may be worried about is whether the mastro report accurately reflects what happened. and no one wants to get caught in between two versions of the events. now, the mastro report is obviously -- it's a piece of advocacy for the governor. it uses the facts to advocate a position. we don't know what an independent investigation is going to find. i mean, it could parallel what mastro find but we just don't know yet. the u.s. attorney, paul fishman,
1:10 pm
is is in the process of looking at that. >> paul fishman, i think i referred to him as patrick fishman before. thank you for the correction, mary. hunter, the ryan lizza piece today is one of a string of stories that have traced the roots of chris christie's political career. you've done reporting on this and talked about his behavior and aks in high school forward and what emerges from myriad sources, from the atlantic to your publication to the new yorker is a man who has wielded the cudgel of power unsparingly. and also does not have aai lee janss that last beyond their political expiration date. i thought one of the most damning apartments of ryan's story out today is former governor tom kean in in ways responsible for christie's emergence on the national political scene. kriszie visited him as a high schooler and was a longtime ally. ultimately, christie attempted to engineer a coup against his son for political expedience which lost him unsurprisingly

1:12 pm
been an arrow, more than an arrow, a cannon in christie's arsenal. used politically, began in october 2010 when he canceled the multibillion train tunnel that was supposed to run from new jersey to midtown manhattan, used some of the money set aside for that to fund new jersey's transportation trust fund, which helped him keep a campaign promise on gas taxes. he has used this specific part of his administration, if you will, the port authority, to dispense favors and to punish. there is a history here. >> absolutely. it's a big, massive pork barrel, political patronage operation. the question i think for the prosecutors are were any laws broken. i can't speculate what might be, but, you know, obviously there are two investigations as we reported in new york, manhattan, and in new jersey into former port authority david sampson, a close ally of christie, awarding -- being on the port authority while contracts of big

stand your ground laws in at least 28 states across the country currently permit you to shoot someone, sometimes to death, in the name of self-defense. the law became notorious two years ago in the state of florida when george zimmerman shot 17-year-old trayvon martin to death. zimmerman's lawyers ultimately opted not to invoke stand your ground in their case, but the law has redefined self-defense in a way that has dramatic implications for the use of deadly force in over two dozen states. and in the state of florida, stand your ground is about to expand even further. last thursday, florida's state senate passed the threatened use of force built, a bill that's since been named the warning shot bill. if signed into law, it would extend stand your ground protections to those who point a gun at an attacker or fire a gun as a warning shot. the bill also includes a provision to seal stand your ground records in cases where charges are later dropped. it would allow those granted
1:23 pm
immunity to have their records expunged from legal record. the bill picked up a steam when a florida woman named marissa alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison after firing what she says was a warning shot at herr husband during an argument after she says he threatened her. with the support of the nra and a majority of lawmakers in florida, the bill is now headed to the desk of governor rick scott. but not everyone is convinced that expanding stand your ground is actually in the interest of public safety. i don't see this as an effort to help marissa alexander, said university of north florida professor michael hallet. it is an effort by the gun lobby to sell more weapons. and according to a 2012 study by the urban institute not only is stand your ground and its subsequent expansion not only is it not about safety, it has also become sting of a vehicle to sanction certain types of racial violence. the studies show that in states with stand your ground laws, when white shooters kill black victims, 34% of homicides are deemed justifiable.

1:26 pm
of fear and a culture of reactionism, if you will, a reactionary sense of, like, this menace that is out there and therefore we must draft laws in protection to protect our citizens from this menace. >> yep. remember, the original way stand your ground was justified was saying in the event of a hurricane where there's chaos in the streets, you need to be able to not just defend your home and property, which all castle doctrine allows you to do, but to be able to step outside your home, say you're evacuating in your car. we need to make your castle your car. walking down the street and someone tries to mug you, your castle has to do go with you everywhere you go. but what's happened in a state like florida where 1 in 17 people has a concealed carry perm and they keep dialing down the standard to get one and keep ramping up the places you can carry, you can pretty much carry everywhere, the one guy who voted against stand your ground the first time, democrats and republicans, the one guy, the reason he voted against it the first time is he said it creates a culture of permission where you're constantly rewarding
1:27 pm
nasty behavior, you're saying if you and i get into an argument now these gun laws are saying i can actually use my gun as a third party in our argument justifiably. it's increasing the permissions to how to use, display, show off, and essentially threaten someone with your gun because that provides the liability to gun owners to make you want to buy them, buy more, carry them -- >> great for gun sales. >> perfect. >> law making is really good for gun sales. >> yeah. >> the other part of this is the racial element and the fact they are trying to expunge the stand your ground -- the law -- the names of people who may have been involved in stand your ground cases. that has very serious repercussions because one of the reasons we know that stand your ground laws disproportionately sort of are justifiable in white on black violence but not black on white violence is because we have data, we have the information. if we expungs those records we don't have the data that shows how racist this law can be. >> not only that but you wind up

immunity from all civil and criminal liability. now they're adding to that that you can literally wave your gun in the air and fire a warning shot at someone and have nothing attached. and those bull its, as people have been saying in florida who oppose the law, what goes up may come down. what happens to the person accidentally injured if you fire your warning shot who was no party to your dispute? your liability is total. the burden would be on prosecutors to prove that somehow you are liable for the death of that third party but you would now have the shield of this warning shot bill in addition to stand your ground. >> the threatened use of force bill, a bill nicknamed the warning shot bill, a bill with massive support from the nra. >> and it will be signed probably by this governor, florida governor rick scott very likely to sign it. only seven voted against it in the state senate. it's going to be signed. >> joy reid, you are a wealth of information and knowledge on this. thank you. just ahead, the place known for baby back ribs mom bow combos.

that only 10% of republicans, 24 out of 233 are in support of this thing? >> alex, the word brain is very, very frequently used when we're talking about this issue. but seems like some have a bigger brain than others and others may simply not have a brain or may be a brain in a different part of their anatomy. i'm not really good at this, but i will tell you that it is pretty extraordinary to think that anyone would be against a bill that would give men and women who are in the armed forces willing to put their lives on the line for this country not from mexico, not for tijuana, not for anywhere else, members of the armed forces of the this country willing to fight and die for this country like so many others have done in the past, that those people that are in the armed forces, and they got here before they were 15 years of age, so guess what, they didn't drive on their own volition, that those would be something found to be

controversial and certainly something that should not be even discussed when talking about the budget of the armed fors of the united states of america. >> you know, vickie, i totally agree with jose on this. the requirement that one must be in the military service would seem like the ultimate test of patriotism. right? i mean, how much more can you prove you love a country than the fact that you are willing to die for it? and yet steve king last week, the eminently quotable steve king says, if we're going to put out the bait, which is come into the u.s., break in so, to speak, smuggle yourself into the military, put on the uniform of the united states, take an oath to uphold our constitution, which may or may not mean anything to them, and now we're going to reward you with citizenship, i think it's just a bizarre thing to do. it's like one step forward with this bill, 673 steps back for the republican party. >> alex, there's just an block here with the republican party,

with one segment of the republican party for doing anything on immigration. what's so ironic, alex, there's a long history of serving in the u.s. military forces going back to the late 1800s. in fact, if anything, it frustrates me that this bill only looks at the military portion of it because, yes, latinos do serve their country, but they're also diverse set of skills latinos can contribute, and frankly the demand for latino is very diverse. there may be a demand in the military, but what about the service industry, the health care industry? they're totally ignoring the demand side of immigration. >> and, yeah, in that way it's like the only service that you are e equipped to give our government is military conscription. jose, i want to know your thoughts on jeb bush's comments this weekend, which seemed like actual lsh -- he talks about he but i think he was using his brain. the national review did not have a kind analysis of what he said. theyed they jeb bush is going to

have to be very careful on this. a republican front-runner cannot echo the narrative of the democrat media complex suggesting that opposition to illegal immigration is driven by callous, selfish, xenophobic white hicks who are afraid of excessively spicy salsa. the spicy salsa bit just, you know, in case people weren't offended enough by that, a little salsa mention to do further damage, to erode further support among the hispanic community. >> yeah. and by the way, it's always good to point out there's more salsa sold in the united states than there is ketchup, but that's for another day. the fact of the matter is that maybe some elements of the republican party find what jeb bush said over the weekend to be controversial, but let's not forget that just a few novembers ago, president obama won with 71% of the latino vote. that percentage of the latino vote isn't the traditional amount that latinos vote for democrats. it's because the republican party had decided that the only

immigration policy they would support is one of telling, asking, and insisting that all those who are here illegally, even if they've been here for over 20 years and have u.s. born children and grandchildren should self-deport. put that on one side, and then put the president saying that he wanted immigration, comprehensive immigration reform. that's why he got 71% of the latino vote among other things and so if the republican party or some elements of the republican party wish to turn their back on that, then i think that in the future they are going to have to say adios to latino voting for the republican party in large percentages. president bush got 44% of the latino vote. is that an impossibility in the future? i think a lot has to do with the ath todays we're seeing today. >> vickie, speaking of president obama, some news out of "the new york times" regarding his trags's record on deportations. two-thirds of the people deported either committed minor

infractions or had no criminal record at all. "the new york times" has a very strongly worded editorial today calling on the president to change our deportation policy, make it less punitive, and to basically stop using the excuse of republicans in congress. what do you think this administration needs to do on deportations, if anything? >> alex, this "new york times" op-ed was spot on. you know, the president can do a lot in terms of defensive mechanisms to keep deportations from growing. first of all, he can do away with the detention quotas. there are bed quo toes in our different facilities that say every day there has to be 30,000 immigrants in these beds. well, we don't need that quota. why does it have to be there in the budget? second, the program of secure communities, which is under dhs, needs to be revamped because it's so flawed and people who are not criminals, maybe people who got stopped for a couple of tickets, are being brought in, detained for long periods of time, and possibly deported. there's also a lot of discretion

in what are the reasons the president can use for stay deportations, so he can do a lot, we can push president obama to stop this. >> we do know that dhs secretary jeh johnson is reviewing the administration's deportation policy. we will, of course, be following that intently. jose and vickie, thank you both for your time. >> thanks, alex. after the break, get your hot wings and quesadillas with a side of conspiracy theories and junk science. chili's grill and bar, not bar and grill, is trying to clean up the mess. we'll talk about the vaccine truthers coming up next. before using her new bank of america credit card, which rewards her for responsibly managing her card balance. before receiving $25 toward her balance each quarter for making more than her minimum payment

today at chili's, they had more than 1,200 customers buy into a conspiracy theory. vaccinations cause autism. the chain announced last week if they would donate 10% of today's sales in honor of autism awareness month, an admiral idea, except the group that chili chose to support is mandating hysteria. it continues, vaccinations can trigger or exacerbate autism in some if not many children. but that is not all. for more misinformation, the national autism association directs parents to another group with a very official-sounding name, the national vaccine information center. it has booked denialism, the new yorker's michael specter writes that that book is the most powerful anti-vaccine organization in america.

and its relationship with the u.s. government consists almost entirely of opposing federal efforts aimed at vaccinating children. science has settled whether or not there is a connection between common vaccines for children and autism. the centers for disease control and prevention, an actual government organization with actual scientists, released a study that found no relationship, no relationship between vaccines and any forms of autism. or as jeffrey kluger writes in "time," here's the thing the anti-vacciners need to know for the 1 billionth time -- you're wrong. really. it's that simple. you're trafficking in junk science in thoroughly debunked science, in the dizzy stuff of rumor mills and conspiracy theories. and yet, the conspiracy theory about vaccines continues to grow like, well, a pandemic. the anti-vaccine banner is being carried by celebrities including jenny mccarthy, and politicians like michele bachmann who
