students in pennsylvania. a 16-year-old boy described as having a blank expression stabbed and slashed 21 people. authorities say he will be prosecuted as an adult. so far police have shed little light on a moment. richard lui joins us live from murrysville, pennsylvania. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, betty. first of all, the injured. the prosecutors saying four in critical condition. one they're watching carefully because of a stab wound to his kid any, just missing his aorta and his heart. one teen during the arraignment they discussed having been eviscerated. his intestines they were describing in that situation. as for the suspect himself, alex hribal, a soft more here at franklin regional.

some students say he was quiet, others says not well known. defense attorneys saying he was a good student. he has no bail set for him. in that discussion between the prosecutor and the defense attorney, they were discussing his ability to stand trial. the prosecutor saying at one point he had said he wanted to die. now, we were able to speak with one of the students here at the high school who was at that time at a bathroom right by that hallway where hribal went down as he went slashing. >> some girl came up to me and said he has a knife, he's stabbing people. that's all i got. nothing else. i went back into the bathroom and i told the girls you got to get out, we've got to go. >> reporter: now, she was at a vigil last night, one of six that happened in murrysville, a town of 21,000. they then went to the streets

and held candles for about an hour. today the high school is closed as it will be for the next couple days. back to you, betty. >> hribal expected to be charged as an adult. in florida police are searching for the driver of an suv that crashed into another vehicle sending it slamming through a day-care center near orlando. one little girl died from her injuries. 11 children and an adult were hospitalized. authorities say several of them are in serious condition. the driver took off from the scene. nearly two hours later police found the suv nearby but with no one inside. the man they believe was driving the vehicle has been identified as 28-year-old robert curchado who has been arrested eight times since 2000. police believe he may be trying to leave the area. the man in charge of the search for malaysian flight 370 says he's optimistic the aircraft will be located in the

not-too-distant future. the "australian shield" detected more pings yesterday. it's a race against time because the batteries that power the locater beacons for the flight recorders are getting weaker. complicating matters is the ocean depth, it is covered in a layer of silt. another gay athlete is setting a trail blazing path to acceptance for those still hiding their sexuality. >> there's a lot of kids in my situation that can't be themselves and have to hide who they are. i want to be the first to step up and be the leader. >> on the heels of -- derrick gordon came out as the first gay athlete in major college sports.

draw comparison to the watermelon. he showed a disturbing video of steenkamp's bloody head to the court. we're, of course, not showing that to you. >> i have taken responsibility but i will not look at a picture and. i remember. i don't have to look at a picture. i was there. >> pistorius is charged with premeditated murder. he says he shot steenkamp by mistake thinking she was an intruder. joining me to talk about this is msnbc legal analyst faith jenkins. every day it's been so hard to listen to it because he's been so emotional and the details are so graphic. the prosecutor went in very hard against pistorius demanding essentially, you tell me you killed her. >> not only do they want to discredit every aspect of his testimony, but they want to show the court that is not someone who is really taking responsibility for his actions. he's blamed the police. he says they bungled the

investigation. he's also saying this is one big huge accident. they don't believe that. they think he actually killed his girlfriend after they argued because he was angry. so they want to show the court early on he's not taking responsibility. as they go step through step through his story and challenge everything he said, they want to prove that to the court. >> then he talked about how he showed video of pistorius shooting at a watermelon and compare that to grotesquely the head of reeva steenkamp after she had been injured in the shooting. what was his purpose in doing that? >> it's a part of their theme about who oscar pistorius is. he knows guns, he's flippant with them, irresponsible about them. they have testimony about him using a gun twice, shooting at a restaurant, shooting out of a car. you have this video. oscar has been sitting there crying every day on the witness stand. all of a sudden they show him on

in such jeopardy? >> you have mainly republicans in several states bringing up the red herring issue, the straw man issue of voter fraud which is almost non-existent. but what they're trying to do is to stifle the constituencies that might vote for democrats, not only just minorities, but also the poor and the elderly and all this type of thing. so they've come up with what can be described adds onerous restrictions on voting. they're getting at one of the fundamental definitions of this country. it's fair to say these people are not just anti-democrat, they are anti democracy. >> some are arguing that democrats are using the voting rights pitch as a way to drive up mirm turnout among core voters. do you agree with that? >> that's something we're supposed to all try and get which is to say a large turnout in every election. unfortunately the turnout is fairly dismal in this country. now you have certain interest rups who want to hold on to their power who are trying to

stifle it even more. >> president obama is speaking today in texas at an event marking the 50th anniversary at civil rights. what is he expected to say? >> we would expect he would offer the idea that, as he has evidenced, this country certainly has come quite a way in the last 50 years. a recurring theme in this event, the 50th anniversary of the civil rights act, is to point out we haven't come far enough, that there are still very, very dangerous, very damaging vestiges of discrimination left. >> bob frankin, thank you for joining us. coming up, a new study on what happens when you sneeze. you have to see this. it's next.
