series with characters that never age. what network is bringing you a front-to-back binge of all t simpsons episodes? this is "way too early." good morning. i'm thomas roberts. it's thursday, april 10 pth. welcome to wait wait, the show that's been watching the symptoms since bart said "don't have a cow, man." we start with serious news this morning regarding the 16-year-old student now charged as an adult in stabbing attack that injured 21 students and a security guard in murrysville, pennsylvania. alex hribal, the sophomore, allegedly ran through the hallway for nearly five minutes, slashing victims as he went. witnesses say the suspect had a blank expression on his face during the entire attack.

a smart thinking student pulled the fire alarm. >> i came down the stairs and i saw the kid, and mr. king was yelling at him and i didn't know why. i turned around and saw him stab sarg, the police officer and afterwards he went down and mr. king took off to take the kid down and i was right behind him and we both jumped on him and immobilized him. >> you instinctively reacted like that? >> i was looking for a garbage can to hit him with. >> the student had two knives, one in each home. the fbi went to the teen's home to retrieve computers. they say his parents were completely dumfounded. >> they offer their condolences to everybody involved in this case. they're very upset. they did not foresee this coming at all. this is a nice young man.

he's never been in trouble. he's not a loner. he works well with other kids at school. >> richard lui joins us live with more. >> the kid has been described as relatively quiet. they didn't know him to have been bullied. what would have caused him to violently snap like this? >> reporter: that's the question right now, thomas. good morning to you. i wanted to get to an update we just got this hour on the injured. that's so key. we have just learned that one of the teens in the hospital right now had a second surgery at 1:00 a.m., about four hours ago. authorities are concerned here that he could take a turn for the worse because of the severity of his wounds. he was stabbed multiple times. they are saying he is one of ten that also -- that also updated to us -- one of ten that remain in the hospital at this hour. the suspect you were talking about, the students that we've been able to talk with, who is

alex hribal. they've described him as being quiet as you mentioned, also somebody who is not the most well known. yet the defense attorney as we just heard from said he was a good student, a good kid here at franklin roosevelt high school. one of his fellow students we had the opportunity to speak with yesterday. this is how she described the situation. >> some girl came up to me and said he has a knife. he's stabbing people. that's all i got, nothing else. i went back into the bathroom and i told the girls, you know, you got to get out. we've got to go. i think a lot of people are here rows in different ways. they all done something to help someone out. we all kind of stuck together in that situation. >> reporter: she was one of the students that could have been a hero. she made a call at 7:11. she also described during the vigil that one of the heroes was officer buzz, one of the guys

that took down the suspect. they held candles as cars drove by. right across the street from this high school where it all happened. the high school, we're all hearing at this hour, they will be reopening possibly tomorrow -- they could, but most likely it will happen on monday as they start to clean this crime scene, finish their investigation. >> certainly our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected there. four people remain in critical condition. at least one of the students in better spirits as he posted a selfie on instagram with the caption "chillin at children's hospital." we wish everyone a speedy recovery. new iowa polling shows a tight field for republicans and a one-sided race for democrats. in a poll vipt joe biden falls behind elizabeth warren and hillary clinton. the former secretary of state is way out in front, 63%. no clear leader among

republicans with mike huckabee and rand paul leading a close pack. iowa hosts a very important senate race. state senator joni ernest has a slight edge on mark jacobs. most recently ernest made national headlines with this campaign ad. >> i grew up castrating hogs on an iowa farm. when i get to washington i'll know how to cut pork. >> she knows how to get attention. that isn't the most shocking ad. we have bob quaus turning heads with a video of his own. >> hi, i'm bob. i'm running, running for iowa's open seat in the u.s. senate. term limits for congress need to become the 28th amendment. i believe in every aspect of our constitution which even a baby knows includes the second amendment. if you are the sex predator and you come to my front door to

look at the way -- forget about me, forget about me. you look at the way the attorney general of the united states was treated yesterday by a house committee. it had nothing to do with me. what attorney general has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment? what president has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment? >> one week after the deadly shooting spree at ft. hood the military base was home to an emotional memorial service. president obama and the first lady paying tribute to three soldiers who were killed and 16 others injured by a fellow service member who killed himself. three pairs of boots, rifles and helmets were on display. with thousands looking on, president obama noted it was not the first time he visited ft. hood after a deadly rampage. >> part of what makes this so painful is that we've been here before. this tragedy tears at wounds stale raw from five years ago.

once more soldiers were struck at home where they should be sa safe. we must honor these men by doing more to care for our fellow americans living with mental illness, civilian and military. today four american soldiers are gone, four army families are devastated. as commander in chief i'm determined we will continue to step up our efforts, to reach our troops and veterans who are hurting, to deliver to them the care that they need and to make sure we never stigmatize those who have the courage to seek help. >> president obama later attended a pair of democratic fund-raisers when he landed in houston he was greeted by former president george h.w. bush. you see the video there, the

first lady as well. the 41st president saying, when the president comes to your hometown, you show up and welcome him. as we approach the first anniversary of the boston bombings, there are two very important reports about what the u.s. did or did not know about one of the suspects. according to "the new york times" russia refused to share with the fbi everything it knew and tam lynn tsarnaev. the times reports, citing unnamed officials, says russia turned down several fbi requests for additional information until after the attack. "the boston globe," however, reports russia was very forthcoming warning in letters that stsarnaev was becoming an extremist. democratic congressman william keating of massachusetts says it was a red flag before the bombing saying key intelligence slipped through the cracks. equal pay for equal work has

been dealt with a setback. democrats fell seven shorts vote of the 60 required to advance the bill. republicans were united in their opposition. independent senator angus king of maine voted against the legislation. the sponsor of the bill was outraged it was defeated. >> i tell you what i'm tired of hearing, that somehow or another we're too emotional when we talk. when we raise an issue, we're too emotional. well, i am emotional. i am so emotional about this i am telling you if we don't pass this bill, i'm so emotional, i'm going to press on. it brings tears to my eyes to know how women every single day are working so hard and are getting paid less. it makes me emotional to hear that. then when i hear all of these phony reasons, some are mean and some are meaningless, i do get emotional.
