doing this work for us every night. it's exciting. that does it. tomorrow night, 9:00 p.m., why we did it. hope you will tune in. good friday morning. right now on "first look," unspeakable accident. a fedex tractor trailer slams into a bus. the outcome is just devastating. arrest made. the suspect in the deadly daycare crash has been busted and his rap sheet is extensive. the search area for flight 370 has narrowed significantly and the authorities are cautiously gaining optimism. plus the prosecutor tells oscar pistorius that he is a liar. new testimony this morning. also hillary clinton dodges a tossed shoe from the crowd. and stephen colbert takes the baton.

a tragedy in northern california to tell you about today. at least nine people are dead after a fedex truck slammed into a bus carrying high school students. officials say the truck driver was killed, but they are still working to identify the eight victims on the bus. this report was filed late. >> reporter: police tape surrounds the charred remains following a fiery collision between a tour bus, a fedex truck and a passenger car in california. the california highway patrol says the truck crossed the freeway slamming into the bus and car. chp reports at least nine were killed. more than 30 others were injured in the kraush. several were air lifted to local hospitals. the sheriff said there were 46 passengers on the bus, high school seniors on a trip to visit the campus of humboldt state university in northern california. the school released a statement that reads in part, humboldt state university is deeply saddened by a tragic accident

that occurred earlier this evening involving a charter bus with prospective students. we are here to support them and their families in any way possible. the accident is under investigation. >> now if fedex released a statement saying, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the tragic accident on i-5 in california. we are cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate." also this morning a window into the horrifying moments a vicious attack happened at a pennsylvania high school. >> we're getting a call reporting one individual has a knife. we have multiple victims here. we need ambulances here as soon as possible. the suspect is in custody but we need to help. we have victims all over the ground. >> 16-year-old alex hribal remains behind bars.

he's charged as an adult pr slashing and stab 2g 1 people and a skurlt guard at franklin regional hospital. he's in a daze like a deer in headlights. his parents also visited him thursday. >> my client's parents are as devastates as the victims and they send their best wishes to everybody. they just didn't see this coming at all. >> investigators are trying to figure out what sparked the rampage include iing the possibility of an angry phone call between the suspect and another student the night before the attack. at least eight boys remain hospitalized. the suspect wanted in wednesday's hit-and-run crash at a daycare is now in custody. 28-year-old robert corchado turned himself in. he's being held on bond. he has been arrested eight times since 2000. he surrendered shortly after a

reward was offered. >> pressure from both sides of the community paid off and he listened and did the right thing. >> he hit another vehicle with his suv which sent it crashing into the daycare center killing a 4-year-old and injuring 14 others. today 15 planes, 13 ships, all of them are scouring a 500-mile area of the indian ocean and searching for sounds that could be linked to flight 37 o 0. and just this morning australia's prime minister said searchers are confident that signals detected deep below the surface are coming from the plane's black boxes. tom costello has more. >> reporter: on board the ocean shield, what may be proof that flight 370 lies somewhere e below. a constant pinging that search coordinators say is likely coming from the plane's black boxes. the newest pings were picked up

from a listening device hanging from a floating bu owe 1,000 feet below the ocean's surface. the data was transmitted to a plane overheard. the race to capture as many pings as possible before the batteries die. >> they found a ping here, they found a ping there. they are trying to get all those dots to line up to kind of say, yeah, this is the area we want to search. once they start searching, it's still going to take them weeks to do the survey. >> they are trying to hone in on the wreckage below, but with just a few sets of pings, the zone is 500 square miles, roughly the size of phoenix. it would take weeks to scan the area of the ocean floor. the more pings now, the smaller the search zone. >> that was tom costello reporting for us. the grilling of oscar pistorius continues. the aggressive prosecutor

kansas city zoo on thursday. seven chimps busted free using a tree branch to scale the zoo wall and running along the top of it. luckily, zoo officials were able to lure the chimps back with some treats. the former city manager of los angeles suburb was sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison on thursday. angela spaccia was convicted of conspiracy and misappropriation of funds. she will have to pay $8 million in restitution in addition to the jail time. her boss and former city manager faces up to 12 years as well. hillary clinton had a close call while on stage in las vegas on thursday. did you see that? a woman hurled a shoe at the former secretary of state just missing her head. clinton laughed it off and continued her speech while the woman was taken into custody. the rock and roll hall of fame has five new inductees.

birthmark. that's your morning dish of scrambled politics. we want to turn to first politics. they are marking the 50th anniversary of the civil rights act. also there is adam serwer. president obama spoke there yesterday. as you note in your article on msnbc.com, for many decades, lbj was a symbol of what they wanted to leave behind. >> they wanted to get away from the legacy of lyndon johnson, the economic decline and the racial unrest that followed the great society programs were really a toold by republicans to really discredit liberalism and i think the clinton campaign was seen as a repudiation of that.

president obama's administration has built a great deal of its policy agenda on johnson's legacy, and obama out of all three presidents was the most eager to embrace what johnson had done. >> president clinton and carter also spoke this week. what seemed to be the overlying message some 50 years later? >> it was interesting. i think clinton was the most aggressive in discussing johnson's civil rights legacy in the context of current politics. he was very critical of the republicans in the supreme court without mentioning chief justice john roberts or republicans by name. he was critical of the push to restrict voting rights that we have seen over the country since the supreme court struck down part of the voting rights act. >> any surprises as you were listening and covering this event and reflect upon how society has changed since the civil rights act? >> i don't think there were a lot of surprises. i thought it was interesting

i want to start with this. there's been a little controversy with the situation in china. they have a lot of pollution over there. at levels that the world health organization is calling really, really bad for you. some people shouldn't even be outside because of it. a beijing artist decided to profit off of it and he just returned from a trip to france, sounds nice, and he brought back with him some french mountain air, which he put in a jar. he looks so well rested. can you believe it or not, he put that up for auction and got $860. they are paying $860 per jar of fresh air in china because of what you're looking at right there. that pollution is so bad. >> we should all get in on this and send over some new york city air. >> some exhaust fumes from the city. it's probably still better than the air in china. speaking of talkers, beyonce
