being hurled at her on stage. and controversy in the first red sox game of the season. why boston fans are up in arms about the pitcher. this is "way too early." good morning, i'm thomas roberts. welcome to "way too early." i made them laugh. i did. i pay them good for that. let's get to it. our first story after overseeing the troubled rollout, kathleen sebelius is set to officially announce her resignation today.

sebelius painted a rosy picture only to see the website collapse under the heavy volume and questionable security. >> dead line after dead line missed. it's as if the agency is in disarray trying to make the october 1st deadline. >> we will be open for enrollment in october of 2013 and will be enrolling americans across the country january 1st, 2014. >> you can say sure us? >> i can only tell you what i'm telling you. we are on track to meet october 1st. i can't tell you what exactly will happen at every step, i can tell you that is the determination. we're on track to meet it. >> well, you're not on track. >> we have had a few slowdowns, a few glitches, but it's a great problem to have. it's based on the fact that the volume has been so high and the interest is so high. >> i'm going to try and download every movie ever made and you're

going to try to sign up for obamacare and we'll see which happens first. >> businesses were given a delay of a year, but individuals were not given that option. why is that? >> in these early weeks, access to healthcare.gov has been frustrating for many americans. i'm as angry as anyone with the flawed launch of healthcare.gov. so let me say directly to these americans, you deserve better. >> and yet the administration has eclipsed its goal of enrolling 7 million people in the exchanges. sebelius was not alongside the president during the celebratory news conference, they reacted to her departure on twitter included a compliment from eric cantor who thanked her for her service but noted nobody can make obamacare work. some say she's leaving because

obamacare won. the law has won its survival. the administration can exhale. personnel changes can be made. sebelius is expected to be replaced by the office of management and budget leader. listen to this. a tech stock selloff sent the markets reeling yesterday. its worst session in more than two years. the dow falling by 266 points. and the nasdaq was down by 129 points. 7% off its 52-week high. it's been a rocky year for wall street. all three indexes are in the red after rising and investors are taking a hard look at some of the faith they have in the tech companies. facebook is down 5% and google fell 4% after yesterday's trading. police now believe the high

school student who allegedly stabbed 22 people yesterday had no specific target and selected his victims at random. alex hribal e remains in custody. there were no signs that the team was contemplating an attack e saying his client looks like he's 16 going on 12. >> he's confused. he's scared to death. he's sort of like a deer in headlights. >> were there warning signs? did anybody have any idea? >> none. this is not a dysfunctional family. these parents were very involved with their two sons. >> president obama phoned the school's principal to express his sympathy. some of the victims are still listed in critical condition. peter alexander was with two who were stabbed. she stayed with him after help arived. his mother was just overcome with emotion. >> when my daughter called me at work yesterday and told me that my son was on a list of victims,

hanging tough. mark pryor's lead over tom cotten has been growing and now holds a 3-point edge. mary landrieu is likely headed for a runoff in louisiana. and mark begich of alaska has distanced himself from the president. they are within striking distance. authorities are investigating a deadly accident in california overnight that's left nine people dead. officials say a fedex truck crossed a median slamming into a tour bus. both vehicles quickly went up in fla flames. the bus was carrying high school kids going to visit a local college. seven students were killed in addition to both drivers. there are more than 30 people who are also injured in the crash and officials say they are investigating if the fedex truck swerved to avoid another car that was also involved in the accident. new details are emerging about a bizarre kidnapping plot

in north carolina that has five men facing charges. the 63-year-old was kidnapped by gang members because his daughter, a prosecutor, helped convict a fellow gang member. the fbi's hostage rescue team found her wednesday night thanks to a daring rescue 400 miles away in atlanta. for phi days the gang threatened to torture and dismember him. >> i'm honored to say frank is safe and back with his family today. he spent five nights in the hands of a group of very dangerous people. we can only imagine the uncertainty, confusion and fear he experienced. >> kevin melton, who is serving a life sentence, helped plan the kidnapping from prison. officials say melton used a smuggled cell phone to exchange more than 100 calls and texts

with the suspects. general motors says there's a new issue with 2.6 million cars already recalled for faulty ignition switches. the lock cylinders must be fixed to prevent keys from coming out while the car is running. the estimated cost of the recalls have soared to $1.3 billion for the first quarter. that's a billion more than initially reported and more than the auto maker earned in the same period a year ago. gm's ceo says two engineers are on leave in connection with the recall. why it took more than a decade to disclose the e defect, which is linked to 13 deaths. the company has asked scientists at nasa to determine if it's safe for drivers to use the recalled cars. so the big news, stephen colbert set to take over david letterman's desk when the talk show host retires some time next year.

this move front page news everywhere with "usa today" devoting its headline to the comedian. he will drop the comedy central character that has earned him many awards and endeered him to millions over the past nine years. the big question, whether he can lift letterman's flagging ratings. some critics say he's at odds with a wider american audience. >> you care what i think of colbert getting letterman's gig? cbs just declared war on the heartland of america. no longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional american values. it's just wide out in the open. they hired a partisan, so-called comedian so run a comedy show. >> rush limbaugh's opinion there. we get to our twitter question.

"morning joe" starts right now. ♪ there was some big news last week that slipped through my news crack, and it concerns someone i've admired for years and yet surprisingly is not me. i'm talking about david letterman who last thursday night announced his retirement. and i am going to miss this good man. dave has been on the
