good monday morning, everybody. right now on "first look," hate crime? that is the question as a man with a ku klux klan pass is charged with killing three people at jewish centers. 10,000 evacuated. a massive wildfire. at least a dozen killed. hundreds of homes destroyed. new detail this is morning. time to go under water. mh 370 investigators are deploying a sub deep into the indian ocean as a new oil slick is located. plus, the situation in ukraine is getting worse as u.s. options diminish. beef lovers, be wear. prices skyrocket to levels not seen since reagan was president. major storms are stirring up trouble across the country.

thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. a brazen tragedy. a gunman opened fire at two jewish centers in kansas city. among the dead, a 14-year-old eagle scout and his grandfather. the suspect, frazier glencross is under arrest. law enforcement officials tell nbc news he is a former ku klux klan leader. nbc's jay gray has the latest. >> reporter: three people are dead after shots rang out on the eve of passover in a kansas city suburb. >> no other words to describe it, panic. >> reporter: a man opened fire over a jewish community center, then a retirement home. >> several shots were fired at that location and witnesses stated that the suspect left the location soon after. several minutes later we received a call from a second location of shots fired at the retirement center. >> the shooting spree apparently

started as dozens were gathering for a singing competition at the community center. >> we just rushed in the theater. we thought it was weather at first. >> there were people ducking down at tables and yelling at us to get inside. >> reporter: a man in his 70s is being held by police, someone they describe as a person of interest. >> we have a suspect. again, i would caution everybody to understand, suspects are not convicted, suspects are people of interest. >> reporter: witnesses say he was shouting an anti-semitic phrase from inside a patrol car after his arrest. >> we're investigating it as a hate crime. we're investigating it as a criminal act. we haven't ruled out anything. >> mindy korprum lost both her son and her father in the incident. >> i'm here to tell people thank you. >> reporter: this community now begins one of its most sacred holidays in unthinkable pain. jay gray, nbc news. new developments this morning in the search for

missing flight 370. for the first time crews will send a robotic submarine deep into the ocean. the blue fin 21 will deploy today. the mission is to determine whether those previously detected underwater signals are from the missing jet's black boxes. it can also create a 3-d sonar map and chart any debris on the ocean floor. >> i would caution you against raising hopes that the deployment of the autonomous underwater vehicle will result in the detection of the aircraft wreckage. it may not. however, this is the best lead we have and it must be pursued vigorously. >> officials are also investigating an oil slick found near the detected pings. crews have collected a sample but it's going to take several days to analyze. flight 370 disappeared on march 8th with 239 people on board.

we want to take you to those deadly wildfires in chile that have devastated the city of valpariso. they're battling link gearing hot spots that developed saturday afternoon. flames actually leaped from hilltop to hilltop in the picturesque port city killing at least 12 people and destroying more than 2,000 homes. more than 10,000 people were forced to evacuate. now make shift shelters in santiago, the capital city, are taking in the homeless. on saturday they took to the air dropping water from planes and helicopters to contain the blaze. neighborhoods on six deadly hill tops have been reduced to ashes. chile's president toured some of the damage calling it a tremendous tragedy and claiming it could be the worst fire in the city's history. now we want to get to some sports news with my friend francis rivera. >> good morning. happy monday to you, betty.

in six months. 85 in d.c., 77 in new york city, and a lot of that warmth still remains in place this morning. no jackets needed. there are big changes in the middle of the country. i counted 12 states with at least one location, a portion of the state, with snowflakes falling this morning. mostly in the rockies back to the midwest. we have severe weather still with some strong thunderstorms now through central mississippi. thankfully we haven't had any tornadoes. still a chance for an isolated tornado or two this morning. later on this afternoon chance for additional strong storms. louisiana, mississippi, much of alabama, down through mobile, pensacola, isolated tornadoes throughout later on this afternoon. another great day in d.c. at 77. look at chicago. 41. it drops to 28 tonight with a coating of snow likely. all that heads to the east coast. enjoy -- east coast, enjoy this. this is going to be the warmest it will be for a while. >> mother nature is giving you a bit of a birthday present.

efiled return versus $3.50 for a paper return. lastly, corporate returns are in focus as the markets look to regain some ground. the nasdaq coming off the worst week since june of 2012. among the biggest groups, citigroup, g.e., ibm. ukraine is teetering on the brink. that stark statement from a united nations official and an emergency securities council committee meeting. tensions escalated when pro russian militants took control of government buildings in eastern ukraine. let's get to nbc's ayman mohyeldin in the ukraine. help us understand what is at stake here. >> reporter: good morning, betty. well, it's the very future of ukraine as a country and as a territory that's at stake here. late last night the united nations security council meeting revealed the divisions between russia and the west over what's happening inside the ukraine. russia blaming the u.s. saying it is full meanting dissent and

causing the violence that's breaking out in the eastern part of the country. the u.s. says it is russia that is fueling the separatist movement. these pro russian separatist militias control several buildings. the government in kiev has given them a deadline to put down their weapons and leave. they have not. there's a growing risk that the ukrainian government may be involved in a large scale mission to try to regain control. >> stay on top of it. ayman, thank you. new details continue to emerge in the investigation into that fiery bus crash in california that left ten people killed. the ntsb says there were no skid marks left by the fed ex truck that slammed head on into the bus, meaning the driver never hit his brakes. investigators are trying to figure out if the driver fell asleep or possibly suffered a health problems.

reports said the fed ex truck being engulfed in flames are disputed by miles hill who was sitting right behind the bus driver. >> it was in perfect condition. it exploded upon impact on the bus. it was not on fire at all. >> the ntsb is revisiting proposals to improve passenger safety on buses in light of the tragedy. a woman believed to have given birth to several babies before killing them is now in police custody. authorities in utah say megan huntsman gave birth to seven babies between 1996 and 2006 and then killed at least six of them before storing them in boxes in her home. the police captain in the case has called it, quote, emotionally draining. a woman who was attacked by a bear in florida has been released from the hospital after receiving 30 staples to her head. terry franna's husband described the scary ordeal.

he is the 27th member of the house to announce plans to retire. as far as florida insiders are concerned, jeb bush is running in 2016. tampa bay times says 76% predict he will run. compare that to just 33% who say senator marco rubio will run. scott brown might be hoping to return to washington by way of new hampshire, but he's behind democrat jean sheheen in the latest poles. it shows senator sheheen leading 45 to 39. buzz feed investigated an age old question. who watches more pornography, republicans or democrats? well, democrats came out on top watching 13% more porn on average. among republicans, kansas has the most page views per capita followed by georgia, arizona, texas and nebraska. among democrats, nevada has the most page views per capita

followed by illinois, colorado, massachusetts and hawaii. so now you know and that is your morning dish of scrambled politics. joining me now from our d.c. bureau, washington post reporter david nakamura. i won't ask you about porn, don't worry about that. >> i can't believe you're bringing me on after that. >> i know. how do you follow that? here's a question for you. democratic congressman steve israel is stirring the political pot saying, quote, to a significant extent the republican base does have elements that are animated by racism and that is unfortunate. he did stop short of calling all republican lawmakers racists. how do you expect this to play out? >> well, betty, i think this shows that he's not the only one that has deep frustrations among democrats right now. part of it i think though is the question of how much this is, you know, a move by democrats to stir up its own base to go out to the polls. you know, the party has made clear that they think this is a turnout election and they're trying to really an him in mate

their own base. you've seen attorney general holder, president obama talking about voting rights and attacks on himself and the first african-american president by the republicans. these are serious issues that shouldn't be wrapped up in pure political play. for democrats, they'd like steve israel to mention it that this is probably not the best strategy. >> i want to switch gears because as you know the u.n. security council called an emergency meeting over the situation in ukraine. is this a sign that the u.s. sanctions aren't working? >> well, i think what's clear is that it's not clear to anybody right now what president putin -- what's going to get him to listen to the west on this. right now the west is actually mostly focused on individuals in russia and sanctions on individuals who are close to putin. that does not seem to be working. to go broader, may be something they want to do but it could have ripple effects in europe on the european economy.
