killed overnight. she is the hip hop bebop dance till you drop and yo-yo make a wicked cup much cocoa granny. the best news, mrs. doubt fire reignited for a sequel. this is "way too early." ♪ i don't know if you can tell i'm excited about that. hi everybody. i'm thomas roberts. it's thursday, april 17th. welcome to way too early, the show like the movie mrs. doubtfire. jen, put on a chicken. that's where the line comes from. put on the chicken. we're going to get to that in the cooler. we'll start with news that we need to. the disaster in the sea of south korea. nine people have been confirmed dead at this hour. nearly 300 still missing after a ferry loaded with high school kids capsized off the country's coast. they're racing to find

survivors. strong current and bad weather are hampering efforts by divers to get inside the crippled ship. more than 170 people have been found alive so far. many with injuries. video shows stranded students yelling for rescuers to save a young girl. she was pulled to safety and is expected to be okay. but her parents and her brother, they're still missing. it's a heart wrenching wait for the families of the victims. relatives are holding out hope that their loved ones will be found alive. there's plenty of anger over how south korea's government has handled the response. we're also learn about emotional text messages that were sent as the ship was sinking. one student sent april text saying mom, this might be my last chance to tell you i love you. authorities are trying to determine what caused the disaster to begin with. passengers say they heard a loud noise suggesting that the ferry may have run aground. diplomats from russia and ukraine are in geneva this morning trying to put an end to the violence between the two countries. both sides are skeptical of a resolution as there was more

bloodshed in eastern ukraine last night. pro russian separatists attacked the ukrainian national guard post. three of the militants were killed. elsewhere, ukraine's push against pro-russian rebels ended in what "the new york times" calls glaring humiliation. in a video posted online, troops are shown handing over assault rifles to separatists. they surrendered armored vehicles. one did some tricks in the town square as you see there. as the crisis continues, president obama says the u.s. and the e.u. are prepared to act if russia does not stop its aggression. >> each time russia takes these kinds of steps that are designed to destabilize ukraine and violate their sovereignty, there are going to be consequences. what you've already seen is the russian economy weaker, capital fleeing out of russia. mr. putin's decisions were not just bad for ukraine. over the long-term, they'll be

bad for russia. >> this morning, "the new york times" front page echoing the president's remarks, reading russia economy worsens even before sanctions hit. so far this year, more than $7 o billion in capital has left the country. they're suffering from stagnant growth and high inflation. the stock market fell by 10%. again, that's before new economic sanctions from the west. and the world bank believes that russia's economy could shrink another is.8% after the sanctions are imposed. the white house is saying that more sanctions are prepped from but did not provide further details on that. joining us from geneva, steve sedgwick. steve, is this the end of the diplomatic process or in some observations just the beginning? >> yeah. in many ways it could be either actually, thomas. that is the key. we don't know what the kremlin wants. we don't know if the russian foreign minister, lavrov who has

been talking tough language again this morning. whether he has the mandate to deal with john kerry or to deal with the ukrainians. what's positive and it's a small thing, it's the first time since the crisis began, since late february, that we've got the ukrainian government and the russian government around the same table. remember, the russians do not recognize the kiev government as legitima legitimate. they throw out yanukovych in an illegal -- that is a bit of progress. that said, the o two sides are way apart. the ukrainians, i spoke with the prime minister last night. he said the russians are orchestrating events on the ground using their special forces to kind of back terrorists and create a ground in ukraine. we've seen the terrible events going on and the bloodshed that's building up. for their part, the russians say that is absolute nonsense. they say you have no proof whatsoever. what we want is a negotiating position is a federal ukraine. we don't want ukraine joining nato, we don't want them joining

hope to engage in a serious dialog. i told the president the same thing i told him the last time we spoke. house republicans do not support senate democrats immigration bill and amnesty efforts and it will not be considered in the house." white house officials say the president called cantore it wish him a happy passover and immigration reform came up. as we mentioned at top of the show, new mexico governor martinez sh being candid and forthright as a politician which may do more harm than good. newly discovered audio tapes on the website mother jones asking if martinez is the next sarah palin. the recordings go back to 2010, including one piece of tape that catches the governor using pretty salty language. >> she's not being straight with you. stephanie goss being has more. >> low supply, high demand, high prices. even the most casual shoppers can't help but notice the difference. at $5.36 a pound, red meat is at the highest price in 30 years. not just beef. chicken rose 24 cents in 2013. eggs 14 cents. a pound of bacon surged 64 cents higher. factors include a virus that wiped out millions of pigs in the u.s. also, a growing demand for u.s. food imports in china. but the biggest culprit is one of the hardest to control. drought. california and the southwest continue to struggle with record water shortages. lots of cattle ranchers have lost their pastures. >> beef prices will stay at these levels or close to these levels for the next three or four years. >> a daunting prediction with the summer barbecue season only just around the corner. >> that was stephanie goss being reporting. economists warn that the higher prices could cause significant

cuts in spending elsewhere. we'll keep our eye on that. general motors looking to shield itself from lawsuits related to faulty ignition switches. the automaker asking a judge to block claims for injuries that happened before it filed for bankruptcy in june of 2009. at least nine out of the 13 deaths linked to the defective part occurred before the bankruptcy filing. democratic senator richard blumenthal, member of the commerce committee says gm's request should be rejected. he and other lawmakers are urging to set up a fund for victims and their families. new documents said engineers detected similar problems during pre-production of cadillacs in 2006. meanwhile, gm is saying it's created a new system to order parts for the recalled repairs. the company is saying now it will make things easier for dealers across the country and quicker for drivers of the recalled cars. two lucky, lucky kids had a once in a lifetime opportunity courtesy of pope francis. it all began when pope got out of his pope-mobile yesterday and
