that's all for now, i will see you back here monday at 4:00 p.m. eastern, "the ed show" is up next. good evening americans and welcome to the "ed show" live from detroit lakes, minnesota, let's get to work! ♪ ♪ out west update what's happening out on the bundy ranch. >> the most powerful democrat in congress has now officially stepped way over the line. >> he doesn't like cliven bundy. >> blasted cliven bundy's supporters as domestic terrorists. >> domestic terrorists. >> these people who hold themselves out to be patriots, are not. >> you know members of the militia. >> they're nothing more than domestic terrorists. >> what do you have to say to the senator? >> well i guess he's right i don't know what else we'd be. we're definitely citizens riled

up. >> you know members of the militia. >> i repeat went on up there is domestic terrorism. >> thinks cliven bundy is breaking the law. >> that man right there is trying to kill the american spirit. >> we're a country people should follow the law. >> we don't work for you. you work for us. >> good to have you with us tonight. thanks for watching, dirty hary, tell it like it is, make my day. senate majority leader harry reid, this is what it's all about, going right back at them. he's calling out the law-breaking nevada rancher, cliven bundy. fox news is still defending bundy, and they are now attacking harry reid. harry reid's the problem now. harry reid has every right to criticize this rogue law-breaker. on thursday, harry reid put bundy right in his place.
2:02 pm
>> these people who hold themselves out to be patriots, are not. they're nothing more than domestic terrorists. and i think that we are a country that people should follow the law. and what went up in mesquite is not very good. i repeat what went on up there is domestic terrorism. >> i think harry reid is exactly right. in calling bundy a domestic terrorist. telling it like it is, harry. bundy has stolen $1 million from the american people. he's used a lawless militia to take on the federal government and get his cattle back. this is beyond late fees, folks this is flat-out theft is what it is. senator reid went on to highlight the severity of the situation. >> it's an issue that we cannot let go. just walk away from it. keep in mind what happened up
2:03 pm
there. there were hundreds, hundreds of people from around the country that came there. they had sniper rifles on the freeway. they had assault weapons. they had automatic weapons. and as one of the former sheriffs from arizona said, we had children and women lined up because what if anyone got hurt, we wanted to make sure they got hurt first. we wanted the federal government hurting women and children. >> now, right after harry reid made those comments, fox news rushed to defend bundy and criticize the senator from nevada. fox news guest and filmmaker dennis lynch, he was present at saturday's standoff. lynch dramatically from the heart, from the gut, told megan kelly, reid was lying about women and children being put in harm's way. he made it very clear that he was on the front lines. >> i was at the front of the

front line. i heard nobody say that we were going to put women and children first. nobody said that. >> everybody got that? very clear. well, dennis lynch should really watch fox news. >> we were actually strategizing to put all the women up at the front. if they're going to start shooting, it's going to be women that are going to be televised all across the world getting shot by these rogue federal officers. >> so who you want to believe? we have a discrepancy here on fox network. wow, seems to me like they got a horrible journalist on the payroll. fox news coverage of this situation is a total joke and it is agenda-driven. they are promoting a lawmaker in defending armed insurrection against the government and now we know, again, that they are reporting lies. all you have to do is play the tape on the their own network. cliven bundy has appeared on
2:05 pm
sean hannity's show six times, his air time on fox has topped 46 minutes. and last night cliven bundy responded to senator reid's comment. >> when you hear senator harry reid call awe domestic terrorist, what do you have to say to the senator? >> well i guess he's right. i don't know what else we'd be. we're definitely citizens riled up. i don't know whether you could call us terrorists, they're the most loving people here i ever met in my life and we're meeting here together and they're dentally upset about this government that pulse their gut on us. >> i'm glad cliven bundy agrees with senator harry reid that he is a terrorist. luckily for bundy fox news is very talented at trash-talking harry reid. >> the most powerful democrat in congress has now officially stepped way over the line when it comes to his rhetoric about rancher cliven bundy. >> that looked like afghanistan. and if that was anything that was domestic terrorism, it was
2:06 pm
perpetuated by the government, not the people. >> as saying deescalating things, snar senator reid seeme upping the rhetoric. >> you know how passionate i am about terrorism. i witnessed 9/11. >> people are suggesting that the harry reid had some stake in this whole matter and that he was against the rancher, cliven bundy for political purposes, he wanted the land for development and there are other people who pad his political pockets. >> it is disrespectful to americans for that man to call these people terrorists. he is the terrorist, and as far as i'm concerned in this situation. >> mr. reid is the one who is calling more attention to this. it was over, people were moving on. he is the one who keeps stoking this fire. >> no, megan, wrong, wrong again. fox news keeps stoking this fire. this is fox news anchors putting their backwards anti-government ideology right into the story.
2:07 pm
fox news has ripped every single scab off of doubt that this is what it's all about. they hate the federal government now. they're trying to make harry reid the target. he's the bad guy for telling the truth. consume this, my friends. this is a picture of a sniper. we showed this earlier this week this is what harry is talking about. this is a sniper on saturday aiming his rifle at federal agents. are you curious what motivated this guy to assume a combat position? a trained combat position? is this got paranoid? who has he got in the crosshairs? what's he thinking? i want fox news anchors to defend this guy right there. tell me this is standard operating procedure when you are at opposition with the representative government. what do you think average americans think of this picture? let's get the common sense meter
2:08 pm
out for just a moment. this guy is in a position to do a terrorist act. he has no authority. he is in a position to take someone's life. that right there is the picture of a domestic terrorist this situation on saturday was emboldened by fox news coverage of this story. sean hannity has even admitted he played a role in this standoff. >> in my mind there's no doubt the fact that so many people showed up to support you and i would even argue a little bit, that the media coverage that myself and some other people have given to this case, played a part in this. because none of it made sense. >> yeah, you did, sean, you played a part in it. earlier this week, we proved cliven bund judgie is an absolute freeloader. the dictionary defines that as a person supported by another without making an adequate return. now i want to pull up the definition of terrorism. the definition, the dictionary
2:09 pm
defines terrorism as this -- as the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. let's go back to the picture if we can, to the guy, let's go back to the picture of the guy behind the wall on the highway. do you think that he might be intimidating anybody? do you think that you would feel comfortable if you knew that you were doing your job as a federal agent and there's some guy behind a wall that's got you in the crosshairs? would you feel somewhat intimidated? you think that the federal agents aren't human beings? they're doing their job, because the guy down there opens $1 million. there's exactly who fox news is defending. that is exactly what cliven bundy is doing, intimidating people. he is without a doubt, a terrorist. harry reid is showing leadership when he's telling the truth. and he's got the guts to do it. he is showing americans that you
2:10 pm
can't be intimidated by these extreme right wing anti-government law-breakers. make no mistake, make no mistake, the people with the guns out there in the desert, they are voting republican. the republican party has been on a mission since 1981 to be anti-government. oh, it all started with uncle ronnie reagan. >> in this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem. >> oh yeah. that's where it all started. that planted the seed. that the federal government doesn't do anything right in anybody who represents the federal government is an easy target. harry reid is calling out a party that will not separate themselves from these kind of nut jobs with guns who show up from around the country, that aren't rancherly neighborly folks, oh, it's the next farm over. it's the next ranch over. oh no, it's not. these are extremists who gather
2:11 pm
from all around the country. because they thought there was going to be a showdown, an o.k. corral with, the federal government. harry reid, he's exactly doing it the right way. fox news should be ashamed of themselves for promoting and defending a law-breaker. now i'm going to expect to see eric boley put a picture of that sniper up on the air and defend that guy for doing that. defend that man in that combat position. what's the difference between that guy right there and somebody who drives up in front of your house with a bomb in the back seat and somebody calls to say hey you know that guy out front, he's got a bomb in the back of his car. would you think you're being targeted? would you think that is an act of terrorism? you damn right you would. that's why harry reid is calling these people domestic terrorists. we need to call it what they are we need to call it the way we see it these are the facts. now $1 million. you know, if fox is so
2:12 pm
determined to defend this bundy guy, why don't they act like him? megan kelly and sean hannity? what are you paying taxes for? it's the federal government, why don't you imitate this guy? i think fox news wants a shoot-out. i think fox news wants a shoot-out at the o.k. corral. i don't think they can get enough of this stuff. get your cell phones out. i want to know what you think. tonight's question, do you agree with harry reid for calling cliven bundy a domestic terrorist? text a for yes, text b for no. we'll bring you the results late oern in the show. for more i want to bring in msnbc contributor and former montana governor, brian switser. governor, good to have you with us tonight. >> good to be back. >> your thoughts. your thoughts on this situation, the way it's being covered, the way these law-breaker is being portrayed.
2:13 pm
reyour reaction to harry reid being called. >> harry reid knows western range law and knows nevada law. no cattlemen are standing beside bundy. the nevada cattlemen's association, the stock owner associations from across the west are not with this guy. they know that the taylor grazing act was passed in 1934, so that there would be an organized way of grazing cattle on federal land. they understand that we were over-grazing the resource, and we needed to have some organization. and they support what the blm does. this guy, bundy, is, i mentioned before, i think he's a grifter. this guy has, he has brands on his cattle. and the federal government is going to collect this money. they have a court order. and when you own cattle in the west, you brand them with a hot iron brand. and that brand will stay on that animal for the rest of its life. there's only two livestock barns
2:14 pm
in nevada he'll have to ship them up to fal ton sell them and or he'll need to take them to utah when a brand inspector looks at the animal, they'll see there's a lien on it and when he sells the cattle, the check will be sent to the federal government. because the court has already ordered this guy to pay this bill. and so that brand that belongs to cliven bundy on those cattle and the federal government is going to be paid. that's what happens with a law-abiding citizen. now apparently bundy has organized a group of never do wells from all across this country. these are not cattlemen, they're not people of the land. they are just people that want to stir up trouble. and apparently fox news wants to be part of that group. >> governor is there anything that state officials can do to defuse this situation? on a state level, or is this guy just simply unreachable? >> well there is and it's on a state level. the state brand inspectors, when
2:15 pm
he ships those cattle to market, and you don't raise cattle just to keep them. at some point you got to sell them. it will be the brand inspectors for the state of nevada that will have a lien in their pocket from the federal government. and when he tries to ship those cattle to market, they will take up those papers and send that check to the federal government. that's just the way the laws work in nevada. you can't have a civilized society unless can you do such a thing. >> so there's nothing the governor should do, there's nothing the ag commissioner should do or anybody in any government position, just let this thing go and nail him in his pocketbook and that's going to be the end of it? is that your solution on this? is that the way you think it should be handled? >> that is the financial solution to this. the guy is still a law-breaker and he has thumbed his nose at law enforcement. he with a trying to belittle the sheriff the other day in front of a group of people saying why aren't you pointing your guns at those federal officials? why are you here and not doing something about putting them in
2:16 pm
jail? well the sheriff is a law-abiding citizen and he is law enforcement. of course he understands there's a court order that has already been issued against bundy and he's going to support that. >> i'm stunned at fox news and what they're doing. i'm just absolutely stunned. governor switzer, great to have you with us. let me bring in liberal commentator and broadcaster john fugelsang. your take on this situation and the way the network, fox news is promoting this. and giving cover and support to bundy. your thoughts? >> i haven't seen sean hannity this excited to send other people out to get shot since the iraq war, so i'm happy to talk about this. we should thank sean hannity and rancher bundy for teaching us that patriots means guy with guns who want free stuch. i'm shocked that harry reid would use the language of terrorist, when anarchist, moocher or welfare cowboy is
2:17 pm
speaking the gop's language. if he called him an anarchist, moocher or welfare cowboy, fox news wouldn't use that language. you would think a state with legalized prostitution might understand that. >> now, do you think bundy is a domestic terrorist? and did harry reid go too far in telling it like it is? i mean his description was very clear. he talked about how the groups got together what they are carrying, how they used the women and children as props. your thoughts? >> well again i hate to disagree with you, ed. i think harry reid may have misstepped in the use of language. fox news had a field day with the senator for using the word "terrorist." this guy is a moocher. this guy is a grifter. and i think the governor was right in saying so. i do think that there's other ways that harry reid could have got thn point across that would not have inspired the base this is all about 2014's mid-term elections and sean hannity is
2:18 pm
terrified that more of his interns are sending their resumés to megan kelly's show. these guys do want blooldshed. i think what harry reid did inflamed the tensions and will inspoor even more yahoos to go out and vote. this is all selfishness, i would stai say it was terrorism if rancher bundy had political aims, he's just trying to screw over you and me and the taxpayers to make a buck. the ugly history of american selfishness, we've got from manifest destiny to american exceptionalism, to whatever, i do what i want. >> john fugelsang good to have you with us today, appreciate your time on the ed show. remember to answer tonight's question, share your thoughts on twitter, @edshow. coming up, breaking news on the president's decision on the keystone xl pipeline. as the cowboy and indian alliance rides into washington, d.c. plus democrats going on offense with eight million reasons to vote blue in

2:27 pm
where some of the greatest americans stood and spoke eloquently. they come to the floor and they make these speeches, most of them were nonsensical about a program that's working. and it's almost as if it is driving some of them absolutely nutty. that the program is now working. we had a rocky start. the president said we're going to straighten things out. they did we're moving. the republicans are still stuck on repeal. when we get back about ten days from now, i'm expecting new legislation to repeal obama care or the affordable care act and i do not believe that there is one single opinion on how to make it better than that will be in any piece of legislation. that ought to say something to the american public. >> you know, if you look at the last couple of elections, the democrats have outnumbered the republicans when it comes to the

get out the vote. wouldn't this be a motivator for in an off-year election, to get the president out on the road, and to they will these stories. the president says forcefully defend and be proud of. to me, that would motivate people to come out and vote saying there's more where that came from, if you put democrats in office. and yet, some democrats are running around talking about fixing obamacare. eight million people have fixed it. they've changed their lives with this. what kind of a role do you think the president can play in the mid terms? >> well i think he can play a significant role in many states there are some states like louisiana and maybe even arkansas, where the president probably is not going to help democrats. however, there are a lot of other states that we have a chance to win i think, the president ought to go to new hampshire. i think the president ought to certainly go to florida. i think the president can come
2:29 pm
to missouri and is certainly welcome to its largest city, kansas city, missouri. because this is something to be proud of. i think the real danger here, i don't think republicans are thinking about, is that the people who are signing up are young. and i think as they sign up and hear people talk about how horrible it is, they're going to say hey, these people don't want me to have insurance. i think it's going to push people into our column even in an off-year election when young people and minorities don't normally vote. >> 35% of the eight million are under 35. those are young families that are going to appreciate what some in congress have done to make their lives better. no doubt about it. congressman emmanuel cleaver good to have you with us on the ed show. a nevada rancher is getting attention for his illegal standoff on federal land. meanwhile hundreds of farmers and native americans are taking their legitimate fight over land rights to washington. we have breaking news on the story.

ceo russ gurling has released a statement a bit ago on the heels of this extended comment period. he said we're disappointed the united states will continue to rely on suspect and aggressive foreign leaders for the eight to nine million barrels of oil that is imported every day. a stable, secure supply of oil from canada and from the united states makes better sense and i am sure the majority of americans agree. that's what transcanada is saying that's their reaction to the state department extending the comment period. what's your reaction to that? >> you know it's amazing that transcanada continues to portray themselves as an american country. the last time i checked, canada was not part of the united states. they're still a foreign oil company and worse, they're a foreign tar sands company. to use terrorism to try to scare americans into supporting their pipeline is exactly what folks did during the iraq war. we're not going to let that happen any more. the only way to make sure that we are stable with our energy sources is to make sure we have

a diversified source of energy. which means getting less oil and gas and getting more solar and renewable energy. that's the solution, not more scare tactics and misleading facts from transcanada. we're joined by jane kleeb, in bold, nebraska, on the heels of this. and i want to point out that speaker boehner and your congressman, lee terry, used the word shameful their criticism of this delay. boehner said with tens of thousands of american jobs on the line, it's clear there is little this administration is willing to sacrifice for politics. your response to that, jane? >> the only thing that is shameful is representative terry continues to do the bidding of big oil. rather than standing with republican farmers and ranchers in his state. when it comes time to protecting property rights, where is the republican party? if this was a green energy pipeline, could you imagine, if this was a windmill company
2:44 pm
trying to use eminent domain against american land owners with a foreign-owned project? the tea party would be having rallies every day? where are they? we're standing with land owners, tribal communities are standing with land owners, we're not going to take it any more and i bet you this is going to be the issue that sends representative terry home next election cycle. >> and finally, are you surprised that this public comment period has been extended? i mean what do you think forced this? >> you know, i think what forced this was the nebraska route issue. they can't move forward with the rejection or an approval of the pipeline, if the nebraska route is still in question. and then you know, we still have now this lingering issue of the south dakota permit is about to expire and they'll be without a route in south dakota. i think the project is going to collapse on its own weight. the only people to blame are the republicans who pushed all these false deadlines on the president, which forced him to reject it the first time and then the other people to blame
2:45 pm
are transcanada for being so arrogant with their bullying of land owners that made people stand up to them. so in the end, it will get rejected and we will win. >> all right, jane kleeb, bold nebraska with us tonight on the ed show. thanks so much for your time. tune in next week for more on our special series, "divided heartland." coming up, stossel rhymes with fossil. fox news host, john stossel makes a bold claim about fossil fuels and clean energy. pretenders is next. it's back, but not for long,

>> welcome back to "the ed show." this is a story for the folks who take a shower after work. as the debate on immigration reform heats up, you're going to hear a lot of numbers tossed around, numbers like 11 million. there are currently over 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the shadows here in the united states. but numbers, you know, we can get numb to the numbers.
2:55 pm
numbers doesn't really bring us the real human impact of what this story is and what's going on. numbers don't do this story or the issue justice. every single one of those 11 million has a story to tell. sometime it takes courage, guts. like this exchange at an event hosted by the clinton foundation to put a real face on u.s. immigration policy. >> i have a very different glass ceiling than some of the girls are exhibiting here. for the first time publicly i want to say that i am an undocumented immigrant. i want to say that it's been extremely difficult to empower myself in america because i came here illegally when i was 5. it's been very hard because i don't have the documentation to get a job, to vote, which is essentially obviously to women representati representation, to buy an apartment, to take out a loan to go to college.
2:56 pm
so i couldn't even go to my dream college because of that. to get no financial aid. what do we need to put this in priority when it comes to congress? because this is an extreme glass ceiling for me that i can't control, not even as a woman, but not even as a human. >> what has a greater impact on you as a consumer? the number 11 million or that story right there. there's millions of stories like that. and we sit here as a country and do nothing about it. that was a dreamer. that was a woman, a young girl who wants to be a part of it all. but we're not letting her do it because we can't move congress forward. joining me tonight, the congressman from oregon. great to have you with us tonight. appreciate your time. what is your response to that girl's story? a and we know there's millions of stories like that out there,

congressman. >> well, we passed the dream act before the republicans took over. it was a bipartisan vote. it was a right thing to do. a lot of these young people were brought here as infants or very young children by their parents. some of them don't even speak the language of their parents' native country. for all intent s and purposes, they're americans here. they went to high school here, want to build a life, go to college here. they are for all intents and purposes americans, but technically they aren't. as she said, they can't qualify for loans, can't legally work. we need to take care of that problem. there's an even bigger problem, obviously, dealing with their parents. and other people who don't have children. this bill passed the senate, ed, by 68-32. what passes the unbelievably partisan senate 68-32? i had a guy stand up in a town meeting and say congressman, you're doing amnesty. this is horrible. i said well, here, let me tell

you. this isn't exactly amnesty. this is a tough bill. 13-year process. register with the government, pay thousands of dollars in fines, pay back taxes, pay for your own criminal background check conducted by the government, pass the background check. then you have a ten-year waiting period which you must stay employed, you can't get any federal benefits, you can't commit any infractions, you have to learn english and at the end of those ten years if you met all those qualificatioqualifica paid more fines then you can get a green card and then after that in three years you can apply to get in line for citizenship. that isn't exactly amnesty. this is a tough process for people to get through. but it would allow them to come out of the shadows so they couldn't be exploited anymore by unscrupulous employers. and it has meaningful employer sanctions. why are most of these people here? they came into this country or
