thank you for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. we begin with the 16-year-old boy that the fbi calls lucky to be alive. he survived a flight from hawaii to california. the boy was unconscious for most of the 5 1/2 hour trip during which time the plane can reach altitude of 38,000 feet and temperatures can drop as low as 80 degrees below zero. this photo that nbc news has not independently confirmed allegedly shows the stowe away being loaded into the ambulance at the airport where he was discovered on the tarmac without an i.d. the fbi said the boy hopped a fence at the san jose airport, randomly chose a plane and was trying to run away from home. the teen is said to be fine medically and is now in child protective services. the boy will not be charged with

a crime. now to the 118th running of the boston marathon. 36,000 runners and more than a million spectators are in boston for today's race. nearly 4500 of the athletes who were still on the course last year as the two bombs exploded at the finish line, they will finish their race. let's get to chris polone in boston. chris, how is the event shaping up? >> reporter: betty, it was an act of terror that shook the city to the core. since then, people here have vowed to run again. today they will. this is the end, the finish of 26.2 grueling miles but today this line marks the beginning, the next step in recovery for the city that refuses to give up. >> it was important to come back and finish up, not only for myself but for everybody else. >> reporter: when the bombs went off, people were still on the

course. they've been invited back to finish what they started. >> the running community is showing people of the world that you can't stop us. >> reporter: it's been an emotional week in boston as the city and nation honored people. at fenway park, boston honored the survivors. elsewhere, some of the 36,000 runners loaded up on pasta or took a last look at the course. many taking part in the easter services from the south church. >> every athlete whether spiritual or otherwise needs a whole community for it to work. >> chandra tail door found a new beginning at the finish line. >> this is time for new beginnings. that's what it is for us. >> reporter: the 118th running of the marathon can't fix the

pain, but it's millions of little steps that will help recover. security is the number one concern here today. more than 3500 police officers will watch over the marathon course. that's about double from last year. security cameras have been set up through the entire route. live in boston, chris pollone, thank you. >> security is tight. the u.s. is sending 150 troops to poland for training exercises as the crisis in the ukraine escalates. meanwhile today, vice president joe biden is flying to key evie ukraine. let's get to nbc's tracie potts. good morning to you. what is the vice president hoping to accomplish with this trip? >> a couple of goals here, betty. first of all, to assure that the elections on may 25th go off

without a hitch, but also to try to deal with the violence we saw yet again over the weekend. this is what he was left today after a deadly easter shootout in eastern ukraine shattering last week's troops with russia. >> it's crystal clear that russia is the threat, the threat to the european union and a real threat to ukraine. >> reporter: keeping eastern ukraine safe is on vice president joe biden's agenda as he travels to kiev, that, plus assuring free and fair elections next month. >> there is no military answer to this. it has to be solved through diplomacy. >> i really do believe we should be sanctioning some of the companies in the energy sector. >> we cannot work with russia and try to achieve anything in regards to the language of sanctions. >> reporter: now there's word

the u.s. is sending 150 soldiers for training to reassure the nato allies the u.s. has its back if they take over eastern ukraine. >> if russia gets over with this, i do think a nato ally is next. >> that was nbc's tracie potts live in washington for us. more disturbing news out of south korea following the ferry accident. divers are recovering what could be hundreds of bodies. as of now, 64 have been dead and 240 are still missing. and some heartbreaking video from the nearby gym. families waiting for any sort of news are huddled around a large monitor describing the latest recovered bodies. the south korean president yesterday said the captain and crew, quote, told passengers to stay put but they, themselves, became the first to escape adding that their actions were akin to murder.

while security is really beefed up to this, what is your reaction to former police chief ray kelly coming out on sunday talk shows that he is concerned about a copy cat incident today in boston? >> well, betty, i'm sure that anybody can understand this is a big challenge. you have 36,000 runners and there's going to be a lot of spectators, thousands and thousands of spectators along the course. obviously for police and security officials, it's difficult. in one sporting event it may be one specific location. this will go all throughout the city to bring out the crowds. they have to look at a lot of places to keep up the security. >> have authorities done all they can to secure the race and the region? what are you hearing? >> they have he've expanded they cameras and they have check points and i think this is something that they're going to look very closely at, you know, be looking at crowds and any packages.

i think they're going to have the crowds and the runners keep their eyes out. they have more runners because they're opening it up to anybody who didn't finish last year. again, it's going to be a big gathering but i think they're going to have a lot more security officials on hand. >> i want to take you down south because texas governor rick perry is waiting to see if a grand jury thinks he abused his power. how strong is the case against him? >> it looks bad because obviously the head of the office of public corruption was run by a democrat. i think they felt that office was too political so the governor vetoed funding for that office, threatened to do so unless the democrat who was in charge of the office quit. she did not do so so he went ahead and got rid of the funding. it looks bad. it's similar to the chris christie situation. it looks like political pay back. >> david, thanks so much for joining us early in the morning. we appreciate tnchts thank you, betty. coming back, bill and
