day. easter truce is spoiled by bloodshed. will vice president biden's trip help reset that. on a lighter note, she's a beauty but doesn't want any stinking corsages. how she dashed a high schooler's dream to have her as his stinking prom date. this is "way too early." hey, everybody. hope you had a great easter weekend. good morning, i'm thomas robe s roberts. this show is still fueled by a chilled vintage collection of bartles and james. remember those guys? we want to start on a serious note. we begin in boston. it will be a bitter sweet day. the boston marathon will be held for the first time sings the deadly bombings last year. 36,000 people will be taking part in the run.

the second largest field in history. security will be extremely tight with more than 3,000 officers both in uniform and undercover and more than 100 high tech surveillance cameras added. it is sure to be an emotional day for a group of runners who survived determined to finally cross that finish line. >> probably 100 yards from the finish when the first explosion happened and then there was no finish line. it was important to come back to finish not only for myself but for everybody else. >> we're a big, happy family. anybody will go out of their way to help each other. i think that's what we're trying to show, that terrorism won't stop the running community and it won't stop boston. >> everybody wants to get back out there and show the world that we're still running, still the greatest race in the world. >> now team mr8 will be running in honor of martin richard. the 8-year-old boy was the

youngest of the victims killed. more than 100 people will be running in his memory. more than 100 soldiers held a shadow run at bagram air force base. our mike barnacle is joining us from boston. mike, let's talk about the spirit, the resilience of the city today, especially when it comes to patriots. i don't think everybody recognizes what that means for the city of boston, not just for the marathon runners but for everybody around the city. >> well, it's an unusual day in the city of boston, thomas. as you know, it's a holiday. people are not working. there's a baseball game. the red sox play at 11:00 a.m. there's a marathon. the two crowds come together at the end of the ball game. people coming out witnessing the marathon. filling the city, i think, is an air of excitement and anticipation. a lot of emotion as you just referenced. the police coming in. nostalgia, regret about what happened last year.

sorrow for the victims and their families but martin richard's family, martin's family, 8-year-old boy who was killed a year ago, there are many people, as you just pointed out, running in his memory. many people running for various causes. the overall blanket is nearly everyone you encounter is here to save a following. this is our race, not their race. this is our day, not their day. they're taking back the marathon and the city is just filled with people more than willing and eager to get that done. >> it's about to change the narrative and celebrate. mike barnacle, we'll see you in a little while. vice president biden is arriving in kiev here. on sunday an easter truce with separatists, it was violently broken. at least three people were killed and truckloads of men opened fire on a checkpoint of ukrainian nationals.

the group is being blamed. members say the gun battle was staged to make it look like they're at fault. at risk is the fragile truce that struck last week in geneva. they're levying sanctions if this agreement fails. now to the tragedy at sea in south korea. more than 200 people remain missing. the country's president is speaking out on harsh criticism of the ship's crew. she says their actions were, quote, murder rouse. they must take civil and financial responsibility. transcripts of the ship cap sizing. the ferry's captain is accused of waiting more than 30 minutes to issue an evacuation order. four more crew members have been detained for allegedly failing to protect passengers on board. that's in addition to the captain and two other members who were detained last week. the official death toll has climbed to 60 people.

as nbc reports, many families are clearly losing patients. >> there were scuffles as police blocked them. they wanted to confront korean officials looking for someone to blame for this disaster. please help us, she cries. someone, help us. the boats are coming ashore more often now. nearly every body, that of a 16 or 17-year-old. divers have now found five ways into the ship, breaking windows, installing ropes, hundreds of them scouring the ship. so far only one in six of those trapped inside has been recovered. for the parents, it is a long and painful wait watching the dock that's being prepared for the arrival of many more of their children. >> we just looked at that again. 240 remain missing, mostly high school kids. climbing is halted on mt. everest. on the future of the fact that the season new no doubt after the single most deadliest

accident in history. sherpas, that's the group that take groups up the mountain are considering a strike. the families were offered $400 each which is far less than what they asked for. three more guides are missing. the search has ended. at least 13 guides were killed when an avalanche struck. nbc was prepping a special. the network has canceled that show for may. the future of the keystone pipeline is in question once more as the obama administration is pushing back its deadline to make a decision. the state department which is responsible for reviewing that says an ongoing case in nebraska's supreme court over the pipeline's routes. bloomberg is reporting officials have long said the nebraska case wouldn't impact its view. the court's decision isn't likely until the mid term election. depending on this outcome, the final decision could be pushed back until 2015. this is angering conservatives

and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell said in a statement, i guess he wasn't serious about having a pen and a phone. in kansas, high school students and their families are protesting michelle obama's involvement in their graduation. listen to this, the first lady is slotted to speak at a joint ceremony for five of topeka's high schools, however, there are now concerns that the first lady's participation will steal the spotlight from the kids. others fear her attendance will limit the number of seats available. this is tied to the 69th anniversary of brown versus board of education. an online to return graduation back to normal has been signed by more than 2100 people. so far the white house is referring all questions about the first lady's involvement to a spokesman to the topeka kansas school district. finally for you this morning, the boxer known for a decade wrong struggle against a wrongful murder conviction has

passed away. rubin hurricane carter died in a hospital in toronto after battling cancer. he was convicted of killing two whoit men and a woman back in 1966 but in 1985 a judge overturned the verdict saying the case was predicated on racism. he spent much of his time in life helping others who were wrongly convicted. during his boxing career the middle weight prize finisher had 19 knockouts. he was known for his charisma and his strength in the ring. carter's fight outside the ring was the basis for the 1999 movie "the hurricane" which starred denzel washington and a 1975 song by bob dylan. rubin hurricane carter was 76 years old. have you heard this one? miss america is stepping in to try to help a teen who did nothing wrong except for blatantly ignoring the school administration who told him not to do this. >> i know you have several questions so you can go to your

shift to the nhl. the rangers looking to take the 2-0 lead. we have the second period, game tied 2-2. luke schenn trailing the play. he fires home the rebound. the flyers with their third consecutive goal. they even the series as it heads down to pennsylvania. to boston, the top seeded bruins looking to get even with the red wings. the first period, no score when detroit goalie jimmy howard failed to clear the puck. it bounces and justin puts it in. boston wins it. nothing like a good old-fashioned brawl to get you going. brewers and pirates, it all starts with carlos gomez. a long, fly ball that winds up off the wall, right? after sliding safely into third, all right, this is where things get a little ugly. >> and now garrett cole and

knock on wood, we haven't had a lot of tornadoes. in the spring we continue to be pretty much fatality free is the way we're going to call it. we were very fortunate to this point. hopefully we'll continue going this way. the only bad weather out there this morning, thunderstorms rolling over i-35 as you head south down to texas. also rain down to missouri. we'll get rain to chicago and much of iowa. the east coast is looking very nice. we continue into this monday with ideal weather. we're still very nice in boston at 62. perfect marathon weather. start nice and cool, in the 30s. warm it up. marathon kicks off at 10:00. that's the elite runner time. it will be ending as we go past noon. low 60s is perfect. the only people that are complaining, people with allergies. >> yeah. >> they've been saying that this is one of the worst -- i'm lucky. you do, i don't. >> yeah, it's been a little rough. that's great for the marathon. >> perfect for running, perfect

earlier in the show we previewed the 118th running of the boston marathon. it takes place today. if you want to sound smart today, tell your friends that although the race is named after the city of boston, runners won't actually enter the city limits until almost mile 25 of the 26.2 race. the overwhelming majority of that race is spent in seven cities and towns just outside of boston. the weather will be great. we send our best. let's check in with our man louis who will tell us about somebody who might get shucked over the border. >> that's right, thomas. let's start with justin bieber, the petition to get him booted. it looks like bieber's status is safe for now. the white house has released a

it is patriots day and boston is getting ready to run its first marathon since the bombing last year. security measures are ramped up. organizers are expecting record crowds and a record number of runners to compete in the low 60s. weather wise it's going to be gorgeous. joe biden is expected to arrive in the ukraine. his arrival is expected. the u.s. is expected to leafy sanctions on russian business men if this agreement fails. finally, listen to this.
