>> he became the first american man to win the boston marathon in 31 years. his time to do it 2:08-38. he became the oldest winner doing it for the late 30 somethings, paid a touching tribute to the three victims killed. m.i.t. officer by writing their names on his bib. he was honored to win in such a special race, he says. >> you know, boston was known last year for the tragedy but coming to america to turn that left turn and get a crowd, this is for the people, the boston strong and we're resilient as runners and want to give it back and change what happened and it was known for the bomb explosion and this year the american winning it and giving cheer beyond words. >> what a fantastic achievement for meb. emotional day for survivors who

returned to the marathon. jeff bauman who lost both legs watched from the finish line and said it felt great to be able to return. the search for victims in the south korean ferry disaster reached a grim milestone. the death toll, 104 people. nearly 200 others, many of whom are high school kid, remain missing. crews have launched a remote robot to search. investigators are still investigating what caused it to go down. 20 children made desperate calls for help. the first came three minutes after the boat's last turn. the boy reportedly said "save us. we're on a ship and i think it's sinking." video has emerged from back in 2010 featuring the ferry's captain. at that time he says traveling by ferry is the safest form of transportation. that captain is now under arrest on charges of neglecting his duty. there is a new offensive under way against al qaeda in yemen. over the past three days up to 65 militants have been killed in

an operation involving american drones. the air strikes targeted at a training camp including warehouses filled with weapons. now, the yemeni government says at least three senior operatives were killed. the attacks follow the release of a video showing the group's leader meeting with hundreds of fighters. yemen's military has struggled to contain the terror organization. american officials say without the u.s. drone program extremists would overrun entire portions of the country. want to get you up to speed. the latest in ukraine where there is a big sign of u.s. support this morning. vice president joe biden meeting with top ukrainian leaders today. he's the highest ranking u.s. official to visit kiev since the crisis with russia began two months ago. the vice president met with ukraine's acting president and moments ago he said that the u.s. stands with ukraine as it faces humiliating threats. vice president biden was also expected to announce new financial support. meanwhile, the u.s. has warned russia it could face new sanctions in a matter of days if it fails to ease the tensions in

the region but moscow is pointing the finger at ukraine this morning. russia's foreign minister saying the country has broken last week's geneva agreement by not disarming extremist groups allowing the protests there to continue. the state department now says it is looking into the claims the syrian government once again used chemicals in an attack. u.s. officials speculate that a toxic gas perhaps chlorine was dropped on a rebel-held area 125 miles north of damascus. but this past sunday, the claims were unsubstantiated they said. this video reportedly shows the victims, though nbc news cannot independently verify its authenticity. syria has been steadily handing over chemical weapon supplies after civilians awere gassed last year. the deadline for all of them to be eliminated is this coming sunday. and it's estimated about 80% of the country's stockpile has been

neutralized so far. thousands of nonviolent drug offenders who were sentenced to prison years ago could soon regain their freedom. attorney general eric holder says the justice department will revise the criteria used to consider clemency requests. dozens of lawyers will assigned to consider those. it's the latest part of a white house effort to restore fairness. >> there were too many sentenced under the old regime and who as a result will have to spend far more time in prison than they would if sentenced today for exactly the same crime. this is simply not right. >> critics including some in congress say the changes will lead to an increased spike in crime. there were very scary moments here. a u.s. marshal shot and killed a defendant who charged the witness stand. the defendant, a suspected gang member was facing numerous charges including assault, robbery and conspiracy. officials say the defendant

lunged at the witness with a pen. the witness who is a prison inmate was not hurt. he was trying to self about how gangs operated. the courthouse, it was just opened a week ago. shift our focus to business news now and the markets rose yesterday as investors kept their ice on a number of quarterly earnings reports. the s&p lodging its five-day in positive territory, its longest streak since october. cnbc's geoff cutmore is live in london. the outlook for today geoff? >> it's broadly positive and some of those reports have come in a little better than expectations and we've got a broadly positive trading session here in europe. so i think you'll get some follow-through into the u.s. session today which would build on five positive days so far. a change in gear, though, over at ford. nothing has worked well on this. alan mullally who has driven change in their china strategy taking out a lot of brands that

were less profitable. he is going -- the coo is set to come in, it seems, and that's what's been communicated. keep an eye on that. the summer driving season. you might have thought that gasoline price was start coming down as a result of the fact that the u.s. is pumping on all cylinders at the moment the refiners have got plenty of gasoline. the issue is they're exporting a lot of it which means that the gasoline price is remaining quite high. the price for a gallon of regular, 3.68 on average at the pumps monday which is about 4% ahead of where we were this time last year so don't expect your driving season to get any cheaper this year. back to you. >> okay, so we got that going for us, as well as our streaming video services. for netflix fans that won't get cheaper for us either, correct? >> yeah, absolutely. i mean what is it now, 7.99 for

your streaming service monthly. if you are a regular customer, you may get a little bit of grace period here but netflix says they delivered slightly better than consensus earnings have said they are going to try to rise prices or raise prices $1 to $2 per month depending on the country. they need to start to get this business to generate higher profitability and that's a way they think they can do that. you know what, they've had good news for the first quarter. another 4 million subscribers on the first quarter number, so they do appear, at least, to be drawing in new subscribers who will have to pay the higher price. >> they get the good news. have a good day. have you heard about this, new jersey governor chris christie's public life has been full of success, maybe not the gwb part but he can now add a new accomplishment to his
