2:02 pm
about the money, isn't it? the old saying in business is you can't either p.r. it's about the money. it's your money. it's your disposal income. that's what driving the economy. well, our new chart tonight. this isn't real pretty. we always talk about canada and the united states. our ally to the north. and of course, the keystone xl pipeline has brought a lot of conversation to the two countries. just how are these two countries doing together? ooh, we have a difference. this isn't pretty. this is the median per capita income after taxes in the united states and canada between 2000 and 2010. 1980 and 2010. the difference here, a little close. out here. a big difference. the blue line is the united states. the green line is the canadian income. the american middle class is no longer the world's driving economic engine. in other words, it's no longer
2:03 pm
the world's richest. median income in -- rose 20% in canada for the year 2000 to 2010. so the canadians have enjoyed a percentage of increase that we have not in this country. in the united states, it has gone basically unchanged. now, on the flip side we all know this chart. this is the 1 percenters. this is the vulture side. they're doing pretty good. in fact, they're doing better than ever. everyone else's wages where have they gone? well, they have flat-lined in america. this chart is a direct report of republican policies when it comes to deregulation, when it comes to outsourcing of jobs and concentrating the wealth. the rich are consistently getting richer and they want to keep it that way. what do they want to do? they want to have the supreme court ruling called citizens united. and they want to make hour we

can cons stray the wealth in this country. and citizens united has changed the landscape in this country. billionaires like the koch brothers have given free reign to buy congressional seats. and make no mistake, that is what has happened. their goal it to make republican candidates that will cater to all their requests. billionaires are spending hundreds of billions of dollars supporting candidate who will cater to the 1 percent. that's deregulation and outsourcing, money offshore. all of that stuff. this is what the billionaires want. middle class americans what do we want? we want a fair shot, right? middle class americans are being left out in the cold. politically, they're being isolated. now, republicreport.org is reporting koch-funded groups spent over $400 million in the 2012 elections. that's a heck of a lot of money. oh, but the unions, you know,
2:05 pm
they spend a bunch of money. wait a minute, this is more than double the spending of the top ten labor unions combined. billionaires want a government by the rich for the rich. now, senator birdie sanders has said it's an oligarchy. he's the first one to come out and say it. some senators are kind of fighting back. harry reid he recently gave his speech on the floor that got a lot of criticism. >> everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not the facts. but i would guess the koch brothers have been able to buy the facts over the years, not paying any attention to whether they're true or false. the koch brother, able to do anything even exploit americans suffering from cancer to advance our campaign of extortion. mr. president, i'm not afraid of the koch brothers i'll do whatever it takes to expose their campaign, their campaign to rig the american political

system to benefit the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. it would be a terrible thing to allow the koch brothers to buy congress and to buy our country, and that's what they're trying to do. this discussion isn't just about the inherent danger in the two multibillionaires to buy america's political system. this is also about how these two multibillionaires would use our political system once they bought it it and how they would abuse it. in order to add zeros to the bowl line while hurting middle class families. >> what would motivate harry reid to do that? harry reid has seen a lot. he's been in the congress and the senate for 31 years. he's seen an awful lot of stuff. but he's never seen anything like this. this is leadership. he's taken a lot of conservative criticism. but if he doesn't speak up with authority, who's going to do it? you think other democrats are saying, harry, you got to get out and talk about this? of course, they are. 31 years and i've never seen
2:07 pm
thing like this. that's the motivation, because it's awful scary. more and more people are becoming aware of the koch brothers shady backroom buying of elections. this has the republican party running scared. they rely on billionaires to fund their campaigns because they can't win on ideas. here we go, america's new empty suit. earlier rnc chair reince priebus attacked majority leader harry reid for criticizing the koch brothers. >> he's clearly using staff, taxpayer money, resources, website, computer equipment to launch partisan campaign attacks on the taxpayers' money. and that's a violation. harry reid is so dirty and so unethical that some of these things have to happen. you have to put a marker down and say wait a second you're not going to use a taxpayer website and a taxpayer twitter account

welcome back to "the ed show." this is the story for the folks who take a shower after work. president obama arrived in tokyo, japan today as part of a seven-day, four-country swing through asia. he stops in south korea on friday, which is going to be a big stop. the trip comes at a critical point in the stalled talks over the proposed transpacific partnership. president obama is expected to use his time in asia to make a push for progress, but back home the tpp faces tough opposition. the american steel industry has suffered the fallout of bad trade deals in the past. most recently, the u.s.-korean free trade agreement. proponents claimed the pact would expand u.s. exports and create u.s. jobs. it didn't happen. instead, it's estimated the united states lost an estimated $385 million each month in exports to korea. this works out to a cumulative
2:55 pm
loss of more than $9.2 billion in u.s. exports under the fta's first two years. folks, bottom line, this has been a big loser. every trade agreement has been a big loser for american workers of the middle class and the numbers show it. but it's a lot more than just numbers. >> why do you think you got laid off? >> well, from everything that i've heard, the orders are slow, mostly because foreign markets were pushing pipe into our country and into the world market at a cost at less than what we could make it. i mean, if we have to sell a pipe at a certain amount of price so that our company remains profitable and our union workers keep working, and there's companies and countries selling that pipe that meets almost up to what our quality specifications are, but they are selling it at a considerable cost less because they are using non-union labor, you know, child labor, whatever their country deems they can use to build that
2:56 pm
same product, as corporations in this country in a capitalist society, they are going to buy that pipe and save themselves money because of their profit margin. and in doing so, it's reduced our orders down so that our mill's working at a creeping pace, and a lot of the younger employees like myself are now unemployed. >> joining me tonight, leo gerard, president of the united steelworkers international. good to have you with us tonight. this stop that president obama is making in south korea, what are your expectations? clearly, this isn't working out for our steel industry. >> well, let me say first before i answer that, ed, that i think we got to put a few facts. last year we had 32 million tons of steel imported to the u.s. last year, that was a huge number. so far this year in the first two months we've had an increase in that of 25%. we have over 4,000 steelworkers that have now had to apply for trade adjustment assistance. we have 1,000 steelworkers since the decision by commerce have
2:57 pm
now received layoff notices and have reduced hours. so i expect the president to go into south korea and tell the south korean government they need to stop dumping into our market. 78% of the dumping it or the still coming into the u.s. is coming from china and south korea. we just set a record this last two months of steel coming from south korea and other parts of the world into our market in two months. last year we had 32 million tons in. if we keep this trend up, we'll be close to 40 million tons. this is destroying the american steel industry. >> it's destroying the american steel industry, so you're going through layoffs, going through reduced hours, correct? >> that's right. >> so -- >> and the reality is -- sorry, go ahead. >> go ahead, go ahead, the reality is, what? >> the reality is, more and more people are losing their jobs, and as i said before once, the steel pipe doesn't come out of a furnace as a pipe, it comes out as steel, so if you're not
2:58 pm
making pipe, you don't need steel. if you don't need steel, we can't run at capacity, that drives up the unit cost. then we don't need coal, don't need iron ore, don't need limestone and the scientific ingredients going into making steel. that's why 4,000 steelworkers last year had to apply for trade adjustment assistance. these trade deals don't work. i don't know when american politicians are going to come to their senses and say we're not against trade, just against trade that destroys jobs. i'm damn fed up of it. >> how should the president handle this? should he tell south korea you've got to stop dumping this on our market, how would the president deal with this? >> well, i think first of all he's got to explain to them what they are doing is wrong and tell them to stop. he's got to go back and tell the commerce department to use the right form of calculation, then when we come home we have to make sure we don't have rotten
2:59 pm
trade deals. i'm not against trade, i'm just against trade that destroys jobs. in our trade laws in the u.s., we have to lose jobs first before we can prove that we've been hurt. the steel industry last year lost over $1 billion. we're the most productive steel industry on the planet. we can make steel at less than one man hour per ton, we have the highest environmental standards on the planet, and we're being asked to compete against countries that cheat. they cheat. enough is enough. you don't need to let them keep destroying american jobs. no fast track, no more trade deals. let's sit down and do what's right for the workers and working class in the country. >> this is going to be an interesting dynamic for the president. he does not have the president behind him on fast track. finally, if the tpp goes through, is this going to be worse on the steel industry than what it is right now? >> ed, let me just say, there hasn't been a trade deal that in the last 30 years that has made it better for american workers.
3:00 pm
every trade deal has cost us jobs, and i'm sure this trade deal would be no different. we need to stop it. >> that pretty much sums it up. a big trip for the president, no doubt about it. leo ge regarard, appreciate you time. "politicsnation" with reverend al sharpton starts right now. good evening, rev. >> good evening, ed. thanks to you for tuning in. i'm live tonight from miami. tonight's lead, the gop's extreme candidates. are they dragging the gop down with them? in state after state, republican candidates are so conservative, so far out there, that democrats are actually in a strong position. certainly better than the gop's been predicting. and a candidate in north carolina may just become the poster child for gop extremism. remember this clip from the movie "dr. strangelove"?
