all of these terrible injustices that were going on that i should have known about and i didn't flow. i think everybody should know about it. >> i do, too. i encourage everybody to buy a copy of "the divide." thanks. that's our show for today. i will see you back here tomorrow 4:00 p.m. eastern live from the campus of texas southern university in houston. that is not new york city. "the ed show" up next. good evening, americans, welcome to "the ed show." live from new york. i'm ready to go! let's get to work! >> i want to tell you one more thing i know about the negros. >> bundy's 15 minutes of fame are 15 minute of infamy. >> are they better off as slaves picking cotton and having a family life and doing things? >> lawmakers who saw him as a patriot just last week. >> always at least a half dozen
2:01 pm
people sitting on the porch. they didn't have nothing to do. >> come on, boys. >> because they never learned how to pick cotton. >> lollygagging around here with them picks and shovels. >> are they better off as slaves? >> when you was slaves you sang like birds. >> or better off under governor subsidy? >> this is a welfare cowboy. >> i've often wondered. >> see what ted cruise, mike huckabee and others who supported mr. bundy, what they say. >> his comments are beyond repub nant. >> if they come back, i'll be out there with you. >> beyond repugnant to me. >> good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. for days with the bundy situation, the conservatives have been so concerned about the bureau of land management. why did they show up with the agents? why did they show up with all of the firearms and so much fire power? maybe they knew a little bit
2:02 pm
more about this guy than sean hannity. maybe they knew this guy was a racist and could fly off the handle and start shooting. maybe the blm was doing their job. maybe they researched, something sean hannity is short on. you see, this all starts from jumping on the bandwagon because we might get a democrat, we might get a liberal. that's the root of this. republicans, they're always looking for the enemy within the government. the government's always the bad guy. it's obamacare, it's benghazi, it's the irs, it's fast and furious, i mean the list, it goes on and on. it's multiple choice. today, there's a new boogie man for the republicans. it's the bureau of land management. republicans are now absolutely obsessed with this federal government agency. they claim that the blm is out of control, they don't know how to do thingans the new movement against this government agency is being led by none other than
2:03 pm
sean hannity. these jokers can get enough air time. hannity's shameful and that's exactly what it is. it's not journalism in any sense of the word. it is shameful coverage of a law breaking rancher named cliven bundy and it has literally put the bureau of land management in the crosshairs of sniper rifles. >> there's major concern that the federal government could be eyeing yet another massive land grab, this time it's northern texas. the state's attorney general greg abbott is warning the blm wants to seize over 90,000 acres of land near the red river, close to the border of oklahoma. shocking new video of the destruction left behind of the bur roaf land management after it took over cliven bundy's ranch. a former nevada sheriff claims his sources inside the federal government say that the bureau of land management may be quietly planning to raid the bundy ranch. i thought there was a lack of proportionality here by the government and snipers and
2:04 pm
surrounding the rancher and taking your cattle. none of it made sense. do you worry in fact they may kill your dad or somebody in your family? >> any doubt sean hannity is a huge cliven bundy supporter? hannity has used his show as a platform to let this law breaker talk down the federal government numerous times. >> get your arm out of nevada, get your army out of my ranch, keep it out. and if they come, we'll deal with them tonight. >> every county sheriff across the united states, disarm the federal bureaucrats, take the federal united states bureaucrats' guns away. i do break federal laws evidently if they're really laws. these feds, i don't recognize their jurisdiction or authority, so, no, i wouldn't go with them. >> none of the comments were challenged on fox news.
2:05 pm
especially not by hannity. cliven bundy has now appeared on hannity's show seven times. his air time on fox news has now topped 53 minutes. sean hannity admitted he's got tonight know bundy very well. >> cliven i've got tonight know you as this controversy's unfold, you and your family seem like really nice people. >> really nice people. sean's gotten to know him really well. turns out that sean hannity isn't the best judge of character. hannity's good friend, cliven bundy, is not only a law breaker, he's a flat-out racist. here's what cliven bundy said about african-americans on government assistance on saturday. >> i want to tell you one more thing i know about the negro. when i go -- went to las vegas, north las vegas, and i would see these little government houses in front of the government house the door was usually open and
2:06 pm
the older people and kids and there's always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch, they didn't have nothing to do. they didn't have nothing for their kids to do. they didn't have nothing for the young girls to do. and because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do? they abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. and i've often wondered, are they better off as slaves picking cotton, having family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy. they didn't get no more freedom. they got less freedom. >> what do you think? you think bundy can host a show on if news? i don't think i have ever seen such a blatant, shocking example of flat-out racism. now, let's get this all straight here, folks. the welfare free-loading rancher who refuses to pay his fees to the federal government is
2:07 pm
complaining about black people on government assistance. i think it's important to point out just who brought this free-loading racist rancher into the national spotlight. well, it's promotional hack, sean hannity. just last week sean hannity was ready to go stand alongside bundy to protest the federal government next time they show up. >> i fear, guys this is not over. i would take harry reid's warning seriously. if i was scheduled to be out there tonight, if this didn't end this weekend, if they come back, i'll be out there with you. >> no plane to go in, sean? come on. this isn't the first questionable human being that sean hannity has supported on his program. let's see. there's the racist gun-toting hard rocking ted nugent. nugent admitted, hey, he's a friend of the show. a guy named george zimmerman.
2:08 pm
remember him? hannity used his show as a platform to support someone who was responsible for the killing of a unarmed teenager. there's also the infamous softball pickup truck interview with george w. bush. >> is this your favorite place? >> yeah, we love coming here. and it was great during the presidency to come here. it gave me a chance to get outdoors and exercise and to work the countryside, you know, cutting down cedars. >> surprisingly, no questions about lying his way into a war of choice. now we have the latest and possibly the most dangerous chapter in sean hannity's television career. he's supporting a law breaking, rayist, gun-toting rancher. i haven't been shy about criticizing sean hannity on this issue, on this show. fox news need to be called out on this. they have promoted this.
2:09 pm
clearly, i struck a nerve with hannity. on monday he attacked me, and said that i was lying about my coverage of the story. >> fox news and sean hannity should be ashamed of their coverage of this law breaker and this law breaking nevada rancher and his family. i think sean hannity is cheerleading for armed conflict with the federal government. hannity and fox news are playing with fire. >> the federal government, lack of proportionality and sense over a bill, are they going send 200 armed agents to everybody's house, snipers to everybody's house, really? we're not ashamed of our coverage. we're proud of our coverage. not one thing ed schultz said was true. >> proportionality. it's only a million bucks. that's chump change to you folks out there in tv land, isn't it? he doesn't have to pay it. what i said was opinion. and what i believe is that hannity's been trumping this thing up big time because it gave him a target to go after.
2:10 pm
now, i have backed up everything that has been said on this program, sean, with facts. coverage of the story's been very clear. we're not lying. we approve that you and fox news support this guy. we have proven that bundy's a law break somewhere freeloader and the reason the federal agents were armed when they went out there. might be the way this guy things and talks and acts. cliven bundy said that he will do whatever it takes to break the law. how are agents supposed to take that kind of rhetoric? the bureau of land management showed up with guns because they knew exactly who this guy was and they, last week, on this program, i asked hannity to come out and defend this image. what would motivate an american citizen to take a sniper rifle and take up that position against federal agents doing
2:11 pm
their job? hannity, that's who you're supporting but you're too stupid to know it. he hasn't come out and disclaimed it. he won't. sean hannity won't defend this image because he's admitted he played a role in the scene. >> in my mind, there's no doubt the fact that so many people showed up to support you, i would argue a little bit that the media coverage that myself and some other people have given to this case played a part in this because none of it made sense. >> played a part in it. certainly no hype whatsoever. you heard it from sean hannity himself. he's proud of the role in defending this racist anti-government law breaker. this is how hannity got involved in all of this. there's the old saying, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. this guy hates the president of the united states. this guy hates harry reid. this guy hates the federal government. i mean this is a perfect mix for
2:12 pm
hannity. hannity, what did he do? he heard all of this, he jumped in. oops, he's a racist. hannity did what? well, he did some supporting before he did the vetting. hannity tried to distance himself from this mess today on his radio show. >> his comments are beyond repugnant to me. they are beyond despicable to me. they are beyond ignorant to me. >> really. >> now, sean you're on record, we've played the tape, you said you're going to go out and stand with these folks that you say are despicable. you're saying that you're going to go out and stand with these folks when the bureau of land management shows up again to collect the million dollars or however they plan to handle it. you know what's interesting in all of this? what a hip procrit this guy is now. he's trying to distance himself from cliven bundy now that the scab has been ripped off and we
2:13 pm
know how this thing is bleeding big time bad for the conservative movement, who hate the federal government. do you remember a guy named -- what was that guy's name? reverend jeremiah wright. he was a friend of the now-president of the united states. and he said some things and the president-to-be came out and gave a speech on race. and le distanced himself from the comments of the reverend. sean hannity gave him no quarter and now sean hannity is asking for almost forgiveness by saying that, what cliven bundy said was repug nan and despicable. oh, no, no, no, no, sean, no. you and fox news, you dove into this because it's all based in race hate and this is all part of what you're all about. they hate obama. they hate the federal government. they hate any federal agent sy.
2:14 pm
you had a target and used harry reid. fox news used hair rrry reid an tried to turn it on the senator. you thought cliven bundy was better than hiarry reid. fox news, sean hannity, you got caught. do you have the character, sean, to stand up on your tv show tonight and say, i was wrong? i can't go out there and stand with this law breaker. come on, sean. i want to hear it. the world wants to hear it. cable viewers want to hear it. but you can't because you're a phony. get your cell phones out. tonight's question, is sean hannity responsible for introducing america to cliven bundy? text a for yes, text b for no. we'll bring you the results of the poll layer on in the show.
2:15 pm
let me bring in thegrio.com and america's lawyer, mike papantonio. sean hannity called cliven bundy's comments beyond repug nan. is this enough? >> no, it's not enough. but you have to understand, as you do, you mentions the short list of personalities that fox talk machine supported and defended in last few years range from ted nugent who called the president a subhuman mongrel, an couple troll wishes that mcveigh bombed all of the people in the "new york times" billing to rush limbaugh who built his following around ridiculing women, minorities and disabled children, for god's sakes. it's no surprise at all that so many sean hannity types, republican minions, came out in support of bundy. he's a racist, yes.
2:16 pm
that seemed to be okay with him. he's a deadbeat, they overlooked that. he has anti-government hate he's an anti-government hate broker when you drill down. almost a cultural has-been overnight. that fits in well with the type of person the fox media machine has been willing to embrace. sean hannity, clive bundy the center of the new republican brand, for god sakes. you have to conclude this quickly, that is either rand paul and, he's a republican, or dean heller, who is republican or sean hannity the mouthpiece for the republicans, either they were too stupid to recognize how hate driven this character was, or worse yet, wore yet, we're seeing them without their camouflage. >> ideologically jumped in before they did the vetting. don't you think the bureau of land management did research on what cliven bundy is all about? your reaction to comments and
2:17 pm
how this has evolved. >> i think it's outrageous for the republicans to come out and say, he went too far by saying the negro was better off during slavery. that's too far. but we agree with them on everything else. the problem for the republican party they cannot rebrand because their policies are racists. they support cutting food stamps, welfare, all of the programs that help people of color. you can't square policies that you support and the racist rhetoric. that's an ongoing problem for them. >> i have not heard the word negro in years. >> right. it's generational, for sure. but at the same time, i think that, again, going back to the policy because it's policies that are hurting people of color, right? people of color aren't able to make a living wage. he's talking about abortion, black women abort all of their children. again the war on women, going back to the war on women, this go backs to policy. rhetoric that's outrageous but match what he really believes in terms of policy.
2:18 pm
>> how does hannity get out of this? i mean, he's caught. he has been supporting someone that is totally out of the mainstream, completely radical and anti-american. >> right. >> wrap yourself in the flag now, sean, stand with him, that's what you said you were going to do. >> he has to say that he was wrong. he needs to acknowledge that he was wrong in supporting this particular person. i don't know that he will go as far as to say i'm never going to make this mistake again but has to acknowledge he made a mistake because it's not just this one example. you know, like mike said, talking about ted nugent, talking about the duck dynasty folks who said something that was almost as egregious but not quite. and going to paul ryan, because it's a spectrum here and connecting things with policy. >> this guy is stealing from the federal government. then he criticizes people on government assistance.
2:19 pm
if that -- i find that -- that's the end of the story. >> there doesn't have to be anything rational. that make everybody angry. there's never a rational connection. as i look at story, the headline is that you are who you hang out with. >> yes. >> for sean, he has hung out with these people for ages. the republican party has ted nugent around their neck, ann coulter around their neck and now clive bundy. i can tell you, roger ales has built that business by making good decisions, to some degree. now, the decision he has to make tonight is, have we gone too far? >> yeah. >> can sean hannity apologize himself out of the obvious here, and that that is he simply is a knee-jerk in every regard. >> what about jeremiah rith? hannity and fox news gave the president of the united states
2:20 pm
no quarter when the president was distancing himself from wright. >> he still brings it up. on his radio show he brings up jeremiah wright all of the time. the bottom line for conservatives, they need to make a choice. are they going to support these people, ted nugents of the world, cliven bundys of the world or think about the larger electorate and people of color? >> great to have you with us tonight. thanks so much. coming up, day three of the cowboy and indian alliance. they are winning allies with their stand in washington. there luhundreds of thousands i of folks in the south benefitting from the affordable care act. these campaigns that they've been running for a long time, they have at the core one thing, and that is that they are based on fear, uncertainty and doubt. and that only works in advance of something happening. now that the affordable care act is implemented and people are signing up, we've had more than 8 million people signing up for coverage, and many more through the medicaid expansion, people are saying that it's really helping people. so those campaigns don't work anymore like they did back in the fall. >> insurance company profits have not gone backwards. they're doing well. >> right. >> they've got new customers. so what's the next republican attack on health care if their repeal strategy is in the ditch? and it's a loser with voters. >> i think they're going to continue to try to figure out maybe there is some way they can scare people in the future to

2:29 pm
look where we were, look where we are, where are we going to be? >> depends a lot on how democratic candidates position their campaigns in months coming up. if they are going to have a backbone, if they start talking about the benefits, own up to the law and the benefits of what it means to the country and to their constituents, that will shape the narrative. that's what should happen. and i think that with what we're seeing over the last several weeks, i think that we're going to see more and more democrats doing that. >> all right. wendell potter, great to have you with us tonight. thanks so much. numbers tell thor to tory. anti-keystone activists show washington what it is like to have an oil pipeline running through its backyard. later -- why corporations are now joining unions in fight against bad trade deals like the tpp. next, taking your questions. you, my friend are a master of diversification.

2:43 pm
hurricanes, the rising sea levels, the refugees as a result of climate change. but we are also aware, here in oklahoma we had four earthquakes in 2008 and now we're having hundreds as a result of the fracking and injection wells. what happens when you put a big pipeline through there? and the earthquakes happen from the extractive industries practices? we know for certain that the scientists tell us the largest man-naderth wake qua that ever happened 5.4 magnitude in oklahoma from injection wells. >> do you think your message is going to be heard? >> it is being heard. ed, we're talking to you. we know that you've got a big audience. we know that among ourselves we all are reaching out in all directions we've had people here from every country. no one wants keystone xl.

we want to rebalance ourselves. >> the american petroleum institute released data today from a poll which says majority of american voters support building the keystone xl pipeline. why do you think that is? do you think this is because they've been hearing misinformation about it? >> well, i think it's a very pitiful situation because they've been lied to. they haven't been told the dangers that virtually every pump station by trans-canada's records has leaked. they haven't been told that this isn't even going to the united states' market. this is going a free market down in houston. they haven't been told those jobs are transient jobs, maybe 2,000 at the maximum that will happen and the rest of them travel with the pipeline. >> yeah. >> they haven't been told that the amount of energy it takes to create this form of energy is
