tv   Politics Nation  MSNBC  April 24, 2014 3:00pm-4:01pm PDT

3:00 pm
so we're going to have to kill it. >> this is about security, it's about jobs, american jobs. that's "the ed show" "politics nation" with al sharpton starts right now. >> good evening. tonight's lead, a lawless hero on the right shows his true colors. and sends a party scrambling for cover. for a moment, we'll show you the truly offensive comments that have gop politicians and pundits embarrassed and nervous tonight. but first the 68-year-old nevada cattle rancher who spent the last 20 years breaking federal law, his ranch is in
3:01 pm
bunkerville, nevada. about 80 miles northeast of las vegas. since 1993, he's allowed his cat toll graze on protected land. and he has refused to pay grazing fees. why? >> i think this is a solemn state of nevada. and i'm a citizen and we operate within this state. we run cattle here, graze this naturally off this public land, and i abide by all of nevada state laws. but i don't recognize the united states government as even existing. >> yep, he doesn't think the u.s. government exists. he doesn't recognize the u.s. government. earlier this month, the federal
3:02 pm
forces tried to confiscate his catt cattle. nearly 16,000 ranchers pay grazing fees. but bundy, he thinks he's above the law. so clearly this guy is extreme and clearly he could be a problem. but to an extreme right wing obsessed with attacking the government and calling president obama a dictator, glooif bundy was just too ir reist cystable. so they went in whole hog. senator rand paul supported him saying it's an issue of government overreach. governor rick perry saying, the bigger issue is the federal government putting citizens in the position of having to feel like they have to use force. and dean dean helder called bundy and his supporters patriots. and then came the shameful trumpeting from right wing pundits.
3:03 pm
>> iechl not a rancher, bull i would think the federal government would be thankful because they're getting their lawn cut for three and they're paying huge amounts of money, right, with these fees? >> these are good hard-working americans. >> so your bottom line b, you're making your stand, telling folks, we're being overrun by an out of control tyranny. >> it shows you the attitude of the federal government today and it shows the resistance of patriotic americans. >> this is an assault on our way of life. >> i don't apologize for pointing out governor overreach. >> but today, these comments from bundy surfaced. >> i want to tell you one more thing i know about the negro. when i go -- went -- go through las vegas, north las vegas, and i would see these little government houses, and in front of that government house the door was usually open, and the older people and the kids and
3:04 pm
there's always at least half a dozen people sitting on the porch. they didn't have nothing to do. they didn't have nothing for their kids to do. they didn't have nothing for their young girls to do. and because they were basically own government subsidy, so now what do they do? they abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. and i often wondered, were they better off as slaves picking cotton, having a family liech and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy. > [ inaudible ]. >> they didn't get more freedom. they got less freedom. >> their hero saying african-americans may have been better off as slaves? really shocking words. everyone rushed to denounce these comments. and now that's good. they should. but here's what the gop should have denounced.
3:05 pm
and have not denounced. a man breaking the law. they haven't denounced bundy's radical anti-government philosophy. it's past time for republicans to show a united front. not only against his ugly comments on race, but his contempt for the law. joining me now, brand schweitzer and dana millback. thank you both for being here. >> hi, reverend. >> good to be back. >> governor, let me go to your first. have you ever heard of elected officials encouraging people to break the law? >> well, not law abiding elected officials. this is all very silly. this guy is a welfare cowboys. he's already getting a subsidy allowing him to grave his cattle for $1.35 a month when all of us private rancher, 99.5% of the
3:06 pm
cattle raised in america, pay somewhere between $20 and $65. i get a kick out of all these gox guys. you know, they invited this skunk right into their tea party and now they can't get the smell off fast enough. listen, this guy bundy, he took a bunch of people in, including those 1,000 people that brought guns, thought they were defending some kind of a law-abiding citizens. they're not. this is a skunk at a tea party. and i tell you, this guy, senator paul and senator cruz and fox news, they can't get that small off fast enough. i recommend they get 10 gallons of tomato juice and vinegar and take a bath. that's we do in with in the west when we're hit by a sunk. >> this speaks to the heart of the far right notion of disregarding and disrespecting the national government. i know a lot of people want to
3:07 pm
major? obvious racist statements. and they're being denounced. but i want to balk on the central thing of what he's doing, and that is repellibelle against the national government and breaking the law with their encouragement and condoning of it. >> well, he's giving a bad name to everybody in the west that uses these federal resources. there are miners, there are loggers, ranchers, and farmers, and people who use federal water. we pay our bills. there is a deal, a contract that's made between a private business person and the federal government. we follow the rules. these outliers like this they give a black eye to the responsible businessmen in the west. these are a bunch of kooks that have come from other states.
3:08 pm
back in september, cliven bundy's wife said, quote, i've got a shotgun, it's loaded and i know how to use it. we're ready to do what we have to do. but we would rather win this in the court of public opinion. can you imagine someone supporting somebody like that? that's running for president? >> you see this stampede away from this cattle rancher. these people should not have been surprised by this racist outburst today.
3:09 pm
this movement has been tied to the movement for quite a while now. one of the leaders of the patriots has been running around with a meg phone, calling the president of the united states a half breed. so surely they're not surprised to find out a week or two later, these are the beliefs of the fellow there. and one of the reasons why there is this opposition to federal authority is because guess what? it has been the federal government that has protected the rights of minorities. these threads have been sbiened for weeb weeks no uh. >> it is the height of irresponsibility for any individual or entity in a position of power or influence to glory or romanticize such a dangerous individual. and anyone who has done so should come to their senses and immediately condemn bundy for
3:10 pm
their part, the national republican leaders could help show a united front against this kind of hateful, dangerous extremism by publicly condemning bundy. will more republicans distance themselves from bundy? the whole bundy government that you and i are talking about. >> knew we know he makes these racist statements, but they were supporting people who were willing to point their guns at federal officers in support of a guy who's been in the courts for 25 years and losing every time. when you lose the case, you lose the case and pay your bills. bundy and his supporters think
3:11 pm
they can intimidate the united states of america at the point of a gun. there will be a day of reckoning for both clive bundy and his supporters who have fallen into this trap. >> when you go through the whole breakdown of what the governor just said, this was fought in the courts. bundy hasn't paid grazing fees since 1993. last august, a court gives him 45 days to remove his cattle from federal land. in october, the judge tells him not to interfere and finally this month, officials start rounding up the battle. will to what one of bundy's supporters said they had planned. >> we were stat jazzing to put women up in front. if they're going to start shooting, it will be women that are going to be televised all
3:12 pm
over the world that will be shot by these rogue federal officers. >> after going through all the courts, after losing, after going through all of this, they planned a standoff with federal officers and uh said they would put women up front. these are the kind of people that these elected officials, some of them talking about running for president, were supporting. >> of that's exactly the point, the last thing you said there, reverend. look, there have been strains of extremists throughout our history. what's been unique about this is the support these guys are getting from rand paul, from rick perry, from dean helder to some extent from the nevada's governor, brian sandoval. this is an entirely different thing. but part of what's happened here is the conservatives in politics that actually co-opted some of the ideas of these extremist movements, this is what has changed fundamentally here.
3:13 pm
when you play footty with some of these people, you can kiwindp in this sort of situation. >> governor, you know that culture out west. you know ranchers well. this is not a ranchers thing. this is an anti-governor thing. and it's a hypocrisy thing to run for government, run to be the president of the union and support people that are trying to destroy and disobey the union and say i don't recognize it at all. i only recognize the state law by nevada. >> the state of nevada charges $12 per animal unit per month. one cow, one calf is $12 if h ewants to pay nevada. it's only $1.35 when he was paying the federal government
3:14 pm
and he refused to pay that. this guy is is a welfare cowboy. and those cattle now belong to the u.s. government because he's not willing to pay. there's a lien on those cattle and that's what a civilized society does to settle our differences. >> coming up, president obama and a robot. they were having a lot of fun in japan. and then came the short circuits. yes, this is what the attacks have come to. the president bowing to a robot. plus a group bank rolled by the koch brothers is back. backtracking after an error in its latest ad. but it's not what you're thinking. and later, this -- >> i'm obsessed in your program in the same way i'm obsessed
3:15 pm
with the pacific garbage patch or the kfc double down. >> jon stewart unloads on sean hannity's obsession with the lawless nevada rancher. a powerful right winger. hi, are we still on for tomorrow? tomorrow. quick look at the weather. nice day, beautiful tomorrow. tomorrow is full of promise. we can come back tomorrrow. and we promise to keep it that way. driven to preserve the environment, csx moves a ton of freight nearly 450 miles on one gallon of fuel. what a day. can't wait til tomorrow.

3:19 pm
>> this new ad running in colorado is backed by the koch brothers and it features a photograph of president obama and democratic senator mark udall looking sad together. in fact, that photo was actually taken at a hospital after the aurora movie theatre shooting. two years ago. families of the victims were outraged that a group replaced the photo calling it an unfortunate oversight. but a bigger problem is nonstop deception from this group. today, "the washington post" fact checker gave the colorado
3:20 pm
ad two pinnochios for misleading claims. and as part of a long pattern of mistruths. but despite all the deception, it's not working. new polling showss support, eve from red states. southerners may not like obama care, but they also don't want to repeal it. so what happens now? what comes next from the far right groups? joining me now is david corn, washington bureau chief for mother jones. thank you for being here. good to be with you tonight. >> what's behind this deception? >> they're going to keep pounding the obama care drum until it's raw and bloody up until election day. it doesn't matter what the facts are. it doesn't matter even what the polling shows to a large degree. their base takes it as a theological article of faith
3:21 pm
that obama care is going to destroy the nation, and they're just going to keep playing that over and over again. because that's really in a lot of ways the only thing the republicans have to run on. >> well, aside from it being politically unpopular now, as polls are saying, i'm dealing with the fact that if you really believe in something, and you and i certainly have strong beliefs in and try to demonstrate that, why do you need deception to sell it? because it's not just colorado that has the misleading ads. in new hampshire, this ad says health care premiums would go up 9%. but 90% sdeek is worthy of about 3 or four min noek owes. in michigan, this ad claims 225,000 people's plans will be canceled again. two pinnochios from the fact checker. why do you have to lie if it is something you really believe in and want to take a principled stand?
3:22 pm
>> well, i think because obama care is delivering on a lot of the promises the president made. there are problems with it, and it may take five, 10, 15 years before everything totally shakes out. by right now, if you look at prechis existing conditions, where premiums are, health care costs are. it's much many more in line with what the president said. they try to either cherry pick horror stories, many of which end up not being true when you look at them. and they're coming up with these factoids that are false or misleading or that don't tell the full picture because again, i go back to my early point, i don't think they feel like they have a lot to run on in terms of getting republicans elected. they want to scare people. they've been scaring them on obama care. they're going to continue to do that. so that 90%, you know, stat that you cited, the premiums went up in new hampshire by 90%. i think that came from an anonymous source in one survey.
3:23 pm
it's ridiculous. >> but what is also striking is the kind of support they're getting. for example n mid april, about 200 days before the actual election, americans for prosperity has spent more money than the major party campaign committees have for the entire year $35 million. that means that democrats are effectively facing two rival parties, republicans an the kochs' americans for prosperity. >> the koch brothers and others like them, not just the kochs are committed. they're committed to winning or buying the u.s. senate. they don't expect obama care being revealed. but they don't want anyone going after the tax breaks that the oil companies enjoy. so they're using obama care as the point of the spear so to
3:24 pm
speak. but there's a lot at steak and they're willing to spend anything. and now they're willing to say anything to try to win. and, you know, it's going to be like if for the next few months. get used to this. >> david corn, thanks fur your time tonight. >> thank you. >> and we contacted americans for prosperity for comment and they did not get back to us. coming up, president obama in japan this morning having fun with a robot. but they managed to attack him for it. you've got to see this one.

3:33 pm
another one. united states barack obama bows to japanese robot. obama bows to robot in japan. finds it scary. this is how far they go to attack the president. hilarious. but it highlights a serious issue. a long history of attacking president obama on foreign soil. calling him weak for bowing. >> this president seems quite willing to show weakness. >> american leaders do not bow to leaders of other countries. >> that's a deep bow, too. >> what do you make of bow gate. >> it's not appropriate for an american president to bow to a foreigner. >> you see him with the premier of china and he's bowing and his eyes are done. there's something wrong here. >> obama envies these monarchs. obama wants to be bowed to
3:34 pm
someday. >> they bow to the emperor of japan. i just don't get it. >> they're bowing at the altar of socialism. >> that's what i call artificial intelligence. president obama is on the world stage, fighting for american interests, but instead of supporting him, they short circuit him and launched another ridiculous attack. joaning me now are ryan grim and krystal ball. >> thanks for having me reverend. >> krystal, are they serious? bowing to a japanese robot, what does this tell you about the far right and president obama? and you know you're going to be attacked for bowing tonight. but i looked the other way. but i mean, what does this tell us in all seriousness? >> it's so absurd that part of me wants to laugh and part of me wants to cry. there is nothing that is too far.
3:35 pm
they criticize his vacations. they criticize his genes. they criticize him showing respect to other foreign dignitaries. >> but a robot. it's not even -- >> showing respect to any being, right? showing any level of politeness here. and that's what's really absurd. for the right, it's not acceptable to be anything other than the big macho man and they confuse sort of action and swagger for intelligence and brooifry and courage. sometime it's much more courageous to be thoughtful, to be contemplative, to be respectful of people in foreign lands. >> well, you know, ryan, the president has been dealing with serious foreign policy issues the last couple of weeks. and probably the last month or so. and conservatives as you have used this opportunity, to attack him as weak. listen to this. >> every time the president goes on to national television and threatens putin or anyone like putin, everybody's eyes role,
3:36 pm
including mine. we have a weak and indy siesive president. >> obama, the perception of him and his potency across the world is one of such weakness. >> as the president's path is smothering the american dream here at home and projecting weakness abroad. >> a weak america leads to instability. >> obama whether deservedly or not, i'll say it crudely, a manhood problem in the middle east. is he tough enough to stand up to somebody like assad or putin? >> you're talking about a president who did take out mr. bin laden. a president who has shown strength. but the bigger issue is, doesn't it undermine the interests of this koun to try and label this president as weak when he's dealing with some very sensitive and serious issues? and is on foreign land? >> sure. you would think that that
3:37 pm
somebody that doesn't understand how our political system has evolved might be enboldened by that. this entire idea flows from the neo-co idea that was tested. we need to attack iraq because it will show we're tough and then other people across the globe will bow to us. in other words, they say if we attack iraq, north korea will recognize that we mean business. iran will recognize that we mean business. ro herb will see we mean business. what happened? north korea went and got a nuclear weapon. iran kept pursuing its nuclear weapons. russia invaded georgia. the taliban came back in afghanistan. so we did cheney and karl rove said would garner respect, but
3:38 pm
that's not how the world works. they don't shiver when they see the united states bombing one country and say oh, obviously they have bombs and they're going to bomb us next. it's just silly. >> they call the president weak and then they call imlawless. i mean, listen to this. this is sheer brazen lawlessness. >> this is what tyrants are made of. this is what autocrats are made of. >> he has all the earmarks of a marxist dictator. he does. he doesn't like anybody to challenge him. >> he did not elect a dictator. we elected a president. >> i'm afraid president obama may have this king complex sort of developing. >> which is it? it's mind boggling. >> they have been consistent in one thing, which is to be incredibly inconsistent. >> i remember at the beginning of this presidency, when he was appointing people to oversee
3:39 pm
various parts of his administration, they were being called czars. he's a dictator. he's forcing all our policies down our throats. he wants to fundamentally transform america. health care was shoved down our throats. and in other areas, he's so weak and indecisive. it's not that they're separating the domestic from the international, because even in the domestic arena, they've also at times said well, if the president would just take charge, we can get through this gridlo gridlock. consistency is no problem for them. they'll attack him in any way that they deem at that moment. >> be sure to catch krystal on "the cycle" wheek days at 3:00 p.m. eastern right here on msnbc. whps when the right wing heroes turn out to be zeros. we'll show you what happens. and it's the feud everyone is talking about.
3:40 pm
john stewart unloading on sean hannity's love for the lawless rancher. that's next .3w4r57.
3:41 pm
3:42 pm
3:43 pm
>> cliven bundy is just the latest hero op the right. and he's had no bigger champion than sox news's sean hannity. >> we have rapist and murders
3:44 pm
and bank robbers and pedophiles out there and they have 200 agents surrounding your ranch because your cows are eating grass on land that they don't even want or need and that you're warking isn't even theirs. armed agents and snipers began impounding his cattle because they're eating public grass. is this the government's new tactic if they believe you owe them much, they're going to surround your home, send in armed agents and sliepers and take your property at gun point? that's the question here in my mind. >> supporting a guy breaking the law. john stewart had some fun with this one earlier this week. >> it seems like something about this bundy feller is blinding hannity to all the things that would normally drive hannity mad with range. is it the hat? because we could give him a different hat. and you know what, give him a different hair style.
3:45 pm
and a new shirt and a pair of devil sticks. oh, no! he's an occupy wall street protester, trespassing land that doesn't belong to him! >> why do they get to take over a park and sleep on the street. >> now, that's how you deal with a protester that votes differently than you. how is hannity on this issue? >> i have cattle and i have people that graze on my land. grazing fees are normal, and you stopped paying them. there are some people that would say you are, and if i may quote, a welfare rancher. . >> sean hannity has now made glenn beck the voice of reason.
3:46 pm
hannity came back calling stewart a hack saying stewart was obsessed with his his. how did that work out for hannity? >> i am obsessed with your program. you can say true things. i'm obsessed with your programs the same way i'm obsessed with anti-penicillin super bugs or kfc double down. i can't believe that in this day and age because of all we know that this [ bleep ] is out there. that humanity, that humanity, that our society is still weighed down by these murders of a seemingly more medieval time, like your show. to see it night after night serving up the same [ bleep ], my god, you're the arby's of news.
3:47 pm
>> this is what happens when you take on a fight with a comedian. you wind up looking like a joke. joining me now are angela rye and jimmy women. angela, is it ever a good idea to fight with a comedian? >> it's not, particularly when this is no laughing matter. i'm hard pressed to understand why fox news has given almost five hours of air time this to story. i'm also hard pressed to understand why sean hannity can remain on air after defending this. i know today he is retracting quite a bit saying the comments made are despicable, but there's a deeper issue. part of it is, if you think about this situation and you really evaluate what would happen if the roles were reversed, what would happen if bundy was a black man or latino man or asian man? he would be under the jail. this is really not a joke at all.
3:48 pm
>> if he was on the other side, go to the point that john stewart was making. if he was white on the other side of the political spectrum, would they be defending him? could the issue here, i agree, i give them credit for denouncing his racial statement, but what made this man a national story is he stood up and broke the law and challenged the federal government's existence and said i will do nevada law. that's what made this man known. and they have skirted that issue. yesterday he addressed the throngs throngs of tea partiers there and said welcome fellow americans and had an american flag behind mim, but he doesn't recognize the american government. only the state of nevada's government and his county sheriff's authority. so i don't think you can have it
3:49 pm
both ways. i bet he's against burning the american flag. i bet he is. here's my bigger problem. it's not that he's a racist, it's that he said the thing he said and now his backtrack is even more pathetic than what he said. what's worse on top of all this, is that all these republicans that just yesterday were defending this moocher, this taker from the american people, they're now running like cockroaches. over in this building behind me, out in nevada, all across the country, republicans -- and fox news, they are absolutely running from this guy. but yesterday they were fine for him. i would like to know what the difference? oh, i know. he took off his cape and showed his true self. >> this is not the first and only case. before cliven bundy, duck dynasty's phil robinson was the hero.
3:50 pm
he made comments about gays and told gq magazine, i never with my eyes saw the treatment of any black person. i hoed cotton with them. i'm with the blacks because we're white trash. we're going across the field. they're singing and happy, pri entitlement, prewelfare. you say were they happy? they were godly. they were happy. many on the right denounced it. but many also stood up for robinson. listen. >> who is being discriminated against here except phil robertson? who just lost a job because of his religious beliefs? >> people who were so insulted and offended by what he said evidently are offended by what he was quoting in the gospel. >> we would like you at "the blaze." we're not ashamed, we won't fold
3:51 pm
hp duck dynasty, he would be proud to have you. so ted nugent, phil robinson, now it's bundy. it keeps happening to them and clearly they will not deal with the underlying philosophy of policy or government that they all are advocatelinging. and that is they do not respect a strong central national government, particular ly under this president. this is simple. either you love your government or your don't. you don't have to like them, but you have to love being an american. every july 4, what do we do? pack a picnic basket, blah, blah, blah celebrate america. does clive bundy do that? i hope he does. i don't hate my government. i don't think my government is out to get me. i don't believe there are any black helicopters. do i think the government spies on us? fine. if that keeps us free from terror, that's fine with me. but i don't hate my government.
3:52 pm
i was taught to love my country. and the essential back boend of our country as a democratic republic, and if he can't handle that, then i'm sure that we can find someone to give him a one way ticket where he could go live in a place where he can graze his cattle off the government back. that would be perfectly fine for me. >> and i think the thing that is most disturbing to me is the ale, real egregious act here, and he's saying this openly, is that he's getting supported by people that wnt to run to head the government he says he doesn't recognize, jimmy. >> that's exactly right, yeah. look, mere's the thing. i grew up in the south. i grew up in south carolina. i grew new a family where people used bad words. my dad was an awful bigot, but when i came out of the closet,
