>> we do want to begin with breaking news from indonesia. overnight a major scare in the air for passengers aboard a australia airliner. it was forced to land in indonesia because of a midair disturbance by one of the passengers. it was first thought to be a hijacking but later reported he was drunk and tried to enter the plane's cockpit. the plane landed safely and the drunk passenger has been arrested. >> we want to turn to president obama's asia trip. hours ago the president arrived in seoul, south korea aiming to reassure u.s. allies. his visit is happening amid a tragedy still unfolding off the coast of south korea where a ferry sank killing mostly high school students. let's get to nbc white house correspondent peter alexander traveling with the president in

seoul. how will the ferry tragedy effect today's visit? >> this really was a national tragedy in this country and just a short time ago president obama expressed his deepest sympathies with the people of south korea and lead his hosts in a moment of silence that took place at the president's residence. president obama also in a show of solidarity presented president park with the u.s. flag that was flying above the white house on the day of the disaster. in an interview president obama said he and his wife couldn't begin to imagine the grief that so many families here were visiting. it also comes against the backdrop of another possible threat from north korea. south korean officials warning of a fourth nuclear test that could take place during president obama's visit. president obama yesterday referred to the north korean regime as dangerous and he warned that any new nuclear test

would be met with what he described as a, quote, firm response by the international community. betty. >> peter alexander traveling with the president now live in seou seoul, south korea. >> ukraine forces killed up to five pro-russian militants in clashes thursday. that's according to officials. while russia began military drills putting troops on its border with ukraine. secretary of state john kerry warns it will be a grave and expensive mistake for russia to continue in this direction. >> the window to change course is closing. if russia chooses the path of deescalation, the international community, all of us will welcome it. if russia does not, the world will make sure that the costs for russia will only grow. >> let's bring in nbc's

tracey potts. what kind of action will the u.s. will taking. >> when he says those costs are going to grow, he means costs literally. he's talking about sanctions we have seen so far against individuals but also against parts of the russian economy. that's been authorized. as the president put it yesterday, the sanctions are teed up and we're starting to see the impact of that. brand new this morning, they've downgraded russia's credit rating to a level just one step above speculative. that's risky for investors and it's the lack of investors that have lead to this. they have lost $70 billion just in the first quarter in russia in money from investors. that's more than all of last year and that's a concern. president putin says it's a concern but it's not something that's crucial as he puts it. but the u.s. hopes that by

putting on the pressure with more sanctions it could force russia to pull out of ukraine. >> thank you, tracie. alarming news from the centers of disease control about a disease once thought to be vanquished in the u.s. measles cases here are surging at the fastest pace in nearly two decades and as nbc's chief medical editor, dr. nancy snyderman reports, the outbreak is fuelled by unvaccinated travellers. >> new mom meredith had a scare when she got an e-mail from her daughter's daycare saying 3 month old reilly might have been exposed to measles. >> on the advice of our media transition we took her immediately to the emergency. >> she says everything turned out okay and tests were negative but she is right to be worried. this extremely contagious disease, easily spread by sneezes, coughs and infected

all right. we want to take you live now to seoul south korea as you see on the screen. president obama is there as part of a four nation trip. he's in the middle of a joint press conference with the south korean president park. let's listen. >> we share the concern over the continuous attempt to advance it's nuclear capabilities so with a sense of urgency we will make progress in the denuclearization. we will continue our efforts to reduce response and active cooperation from the international communities. north korea's pursuit of two goals at once on nuclear arsenals and economic development are incompatible. they must realize that. later ground work for peaceful communication in the korean peninsula i explained to president obama my initiative

presented last month. residents of both south and north korea will eventually become free citizens of an integrated process. due to conflict, distrust, social cultural differences eventually collapse. during that process, i believe we need to shower constant north korean residents with caring interest and deliver message of hope. especially as necessary to provide humanitarian assistant. it will provide new economic opportunities to its neighboring countries and allies and contribute to promote global peace and stabilities. though north korean regime rejects the initiative i

proposed, my proposal will assure minimum level of value of life to be enjoyed by north koreans and recover common sense of identity between north and south koreans. with that principle in mind, we will pursue the initiative. president obama and i shared a view that while detention and conflict persist, we must actively seek ways to promote peace and collaboration into northeast asia. in that context, i strongly support the u.s. policy to rebalance toward the asia pacific region as it contributes positively to the peace and cooperation. i firmly believe that president obama's asia trip demonstrate his strong commitment toward his policy of rebalancing toward the region and his pledge to implemented the commitment.

as the un security council member, south korea stands side by side with the u.s. to stand by any issues undermining. they work together in asia africa and poverty fightings. we'll gather our wisdom to tackle new challenges. another important pillar of our alliance is practical cooperation and economic social and culture sectors. this topic has continued so far and will continue. together with the u.s. our mutual defense treaty have become major lynch pin of our alliance. we plan to expand mutual beneficial cooperation based on fta.

united states and south korea are working together to advance accountability for the serious human rights violations being committed by the north. i mentioned to president park that the united states supports the korean people's desire for unification and i share president park's vision as you outlined madam president in your recent speech of a unified korea free from fear of war and nuclear weapons. it's a vision of a unified korea where people enjoy the political and economic freedoms that exist here in the south. beyond that peninsula are alliances increasingly a global one. we're grateful for south korea's partnership from typhoon relief in the philippines to humanitarian efforts in syria. we're working closely on new clean energy technologies to address climate change and with
