website supposedly capturing sterling and a woman tmz said was sterling's girlfriend talking about her instagram feed. this is part of it. >> people call you and tell you that i have black people on my zblam and it bothers you? >> yeah, it bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people. >> nbc news has not authenticated that exchange. since the tape surfaced reactions have been pouring in from former players, leaders. even president obama. >> i don't think i have to interpret those statements for you. they speak for themselves. when ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance you don't have to do anything. you just let them talk. that's what happened here. >> no one p from the clippers management has gone on camera. there is a staple saying we have heard the tape on tmz.

boycott of clippers games but argues say that's punishing the players. >> joe fryer outside the arena for us in oakland. lorraine is the president of the n a, acp. set to give a lifetime achievement award to donald sterling. this morning you announced that's not happening. here is the thing. sterling has a checkered history of. former players accused him of racist behavior. "sports illustrated" saying the justice department presented evidence in a 2009 housing discrimination report against sterling alleging he made statements indicating that african-americans and hispanics were not desirable tenants. he settled the suit for nearly $3 million without admitting wrongdoing. why would the naacp choose to honor sterile pg in the first place?

send a powerful message if they could win the championship. do you think the individual player or so coach should have taken action before today's game? >> you know what? i'm not a particularly astute sports fan. i'm a cowboys fan. >> we won't hold it against you. >> i don't want to speculate. i have no earthly idea except to say we have to call out racist people and their actions when we see them. you can't allow it just to go unnoticed, unaddressed. >> yeah. >> so we feel quite strongly. that's one of the things we want to do is call this out for what it is. but honestly, i think it's a

little above that. one of the things that really concerns the naacp is that have we -- there is a question that we should be asking. has america fulfilled the obligations that we had that were given to us since the emancipation proclamation? meaning if every american has equal opportunity does every american have equal access to the law? if we can say that and with all honesty, then those are the tenets that make america who we are. the institutions we revere and the constitution that we hold dear to our way of governing. >> all right. >> if we can say yes to those questionses then we are moving forward in trying to eradicate

racism in the society. i sit here today and i don't think so. >> that's what the naacp will be about. >> thank you. do appreciate your time. more on the story in a few minutes. we want to talk to former clippers player charles smith in a few minutes. we want to turn to the other developing story. parts of 15 states across the country. mid section are preparing for what could be the worst tornado outbreak of the season. kansas city power and light serves people. 700 chers don't have power in oklahoma city. severe weather delayed their marathon several times as severe weather rolled through. in many places it's been a weekend of wickeded weather. friday, six tornadoes damaged 200 home and businesses in north carolina. one of the tornadoes was the first ef-3 of the season. the weather channel's mike

seidel is in north little rock, arkansas. one of the areas that's expected to get hit hard. let pe me start here. what are the areas facing the biggest threat? >> you're watching the storms begin to explode over the past few hours. an active situation now. we have numerous tornado watches in effect. this is the area we are focused on. the red shadeded kwar, the bull's eye. that's where the tornadic storms could pop later on across arkansas. you can see a large portion of the middle of the country under the threat for severe weather now. we have three separate tornado watches. one for nebraska, missouri and the latest tornado watch issued now for arkansas where conditions are becoming more favorable for the development of the long track super cell thunderstorms that could spawn tornadoes. here is a closer view. you can see the line of damaging storms pushing east of kansas

city. we had a tornado warning with this particular group of storms earlier. now looking at the threat of wind damage. the storms are racing for columbia. eventually springfield and st. louis. this is a jog further south to arkansas. storms so far have been weak. we haven't seen as much in the way of powerful storms. the storms have the potential to form tornadoes well into the evening and over the next few days. the severe weather will continue for the next couple of days. >> thank you. we are going to check in later in the show. now we turn to mike seidel who is live for us in north little rock, arkansas. i know you guys had some storm there is before sunrise. what have you seen since? >> so far we have had little, if anything. we have an overcast sky looking south and west.

that's the direction the storms will come from. there is a cap on the development. we expect ta to break as we go through this afternoon. we are under a tornado watch. most of the state of arkansas until 9:00 this evening. some of the storms could produce tornadoes. they could be strong meaning ef-3 or higher. remember the top end scale ranking of 3 is 150 miles an hour. we have been fortunate so far all year. we have had just over a hundred tornadoes. the first ef-3 on friday. no fatalities from tornadoes. we want to keep the streak alive. this will be a long term affair. tonight, tomorrow, mississippi, louisiana, and the threat will head in towards georgia in the southeast tuesday up to the midatlantic by wednesday. this is a four-day severe weather outbreak we are following. it will impact millions of people. stay with the weather channel, with your noaa weather radio.

ball club when you're in the organization. you come in and you know the history. you hear about it and you go with the flow. >> sounds like you're saying you knew when you played for him that he was a racist. >> no. i'm not saying he was a racist. i'm saying he did things his own way and he had his own way of thinking. this way of thinking is shocking to be. there are other things that were off-color a little bit. >> would you ever hear him say things and be like, really? >> no. just things, for example, you go to -- there was a party at his home and there were a lot of children and families there. a woman pops out of a cake topless. it was shocking, surprising. everybody laugheded. that's how he was.

he did things his own way. >> we heard from magic johnson. coming out and saying sterling would be forceded to sell the team. nba legend michael jordan who we don't usually hear from when it comes to controversy in the league. he said if part, quote, there is no room in the nba or anywhere else for that kind of racism. i am appalled that this type of ignorance exists in our country nnd in a sport where the majority of players are african-american. we cannot tolerate discrimination at any level. what should the league do now? >> i mentioned earlier ta we talk about the players boycotting and doing different thing. when you boycott, picket, march you do it to bring awareness to a situation. thanks to technology this thing is viral and has had a global

impact. what should the league do? the league needs to address this the best way they can for a permanent solution. he continues to own the team. will this go away? no. it will come back. if he's suspended for a while it will still come back. people will remember this. this incident is something that's shaking the fiber in the nba which ises a global league. it will be interesting to see what they do. >> sounds like you think he should sell. >> i can't say that. for the statements he paed if he sticks around the league this issue will remain around the league. >> let's talk about the league for a second. the nba generally gets high marks for racial diversity. 76% of the players are african-american. 47% of head coaches are black as well. four african-american ceos in

the league. is what we have seen unfold in the last 24 hours or so, is this an anomaly? >> there is always going to be situations where you can do better. in business, life, dealing with people. i think the situation has raised a lot of eyebrows to what may be the thinking of sterling and how he's run the ball club. >> in my experience sitting across from owners and the nba you don't get the idea or the thought process that this exists. even ted leons i have talked to in d.c. these are solid guys. you wouldn't think anything like this would remotely come from their mouths or thought processes.

developing right now we continue to keep a close eye on the potential for severe weather this afternoon. in just the past few minutes a likely tornado has touched down in nebraska. wnbc meteorologists have been tracking the storms. what a difference 15 minutes makes, huh? >> that's right. this is a rapidly evolving situation. right now reports of a spotted tornado in nebraska. you can see south of i-80 here. a tornado watch was issued. now a tornado on the ground. spotted by spotters there south of i-80. thankfully this is mainly rural. that's the good news south of i-80. the tornado watch throw showers a threat for tornado is real. we are seeing the the threats continue across iowa as well. a line of storms through des moines now. nothing severe. but a severe thunderstorm watch has now been issued for eastern iowa including davenport as the storms race to the north and east. missouri has been the bull's eye, the center of the wind damage here moving through columbia, kansas city and

springfield. this line of storms is headed toward the northeast and arkansas under the tornado watch. we'll keep a close eye on the situation through the evening. the potential is there for tornado activity around little rock and pine bluff. this is day one of probably a three-day severe weather event. getting very busy here continuing into the nighttime. craig? >> thank you. we'll continue to watch the weather here and update you as conditions warrant. right now we turn overseas. new tensions in the ukraine. the tensions continue to dominate president obama's trip to asia despite new ukrainian army checkpoints pro russian separatists seized control of regional state tv. nbc news has not been able to confirm that report. president obama in malaysia today said the world must stand firm against russian aggression toward ukraine. take a will be listen.

you might see someone new at your neighborhood summer block party -- the kkk. the ku klux klan sent out these flyers to people in fairview township, pen alerting them that they were moving in. they insist they aren't there to cause any trouble, instead they are forming a neighborhood watch. you can see the flyer reads, in part, "you can sleep tonight knowing the. klan is awake." jamal boo 'louoy looked into th slate. you write about the klan, an attempt to rebrand itself. your headline "the cku klux kla can't change its image but it is good to know it is trying." the neighborhood watches seem to be spreading.

are the intentions neighborly though? >> i'm not sure. what are they watching for? are they watching for black people? is that the idea of the neighborhood watch by the ku klux klan? throughout history the klan has attempted to rebrand itself as something that can be more open to more people and this is generally a trend for white supremacist groups in general. after the 2008 economic collapse you saw white supremacy groups throughout the country attempt to present themselves as kinder, friendlier, more gentle. and this had is because they recognize that sort of the public atmosphere for people like them is absolutely poisonous. i'm not surprised that the klan is doing neighborhood watches or in virginia, i believe, a white supremacist group handed out candy eggs during easter. but it's not going to be successful. >> so they're trying to present themselves as not your grandfather's kkk? is that what we're really -- >> i think that's exactly what

it is. i guess the marketing strategy is to say, hey, look, back 50 years ago we may have been known for burning crosses and assassinating civil rights leaders but today we just want to make sure your neighborhood is safe. which is ridiculous and won't work. but i think it is important to recognize the extent to which groups like this are trying to rebrand themselves and smuggle themselves into the mainstream so we be aware of them and call them out when we see them. >> the kkk was back in the news a couple weeks ago when one of its former leaders shot and killed a community leader. kansas city. people say we saw this coming, why wasn't this man arrested before. but if you're speaking hate and not acting on it how far does the first amendment go in terms of protections? >> i mean it goes all the way. if you're simply speaking hate, no matter how vile it is, you have total first amendment protections. it is when that hate speech begins to go into active planning, goes to announcing
