owner mark cuban, it's a very, very slippery slope if we start pup punishing owners and whatever it takes, we have to make sure this kind of event never happens again. here is magic johnson yesterday, remember his instagram photo with sterling's then girlfriend sparked reaction. >> unfortunately he's a man in a powerful position and a man who should be embracing minorities not discriminating against them. and it has no room in our society for it or in sports. >> opinions are not mixed amongst the clippers corporate sponsors. this time yesterday three had bailed on sterling and now it's a dozen. adidas joined the list in the last two hours. >> are you concerning this is hurting the nba's image? >> i think it has the potential

to hurt the nba image. i hope they act quickly and decisively in dealing with this. >> we saw a show of solidarity for the clippers players from another team, the miami heat dropped warm-up shirts center court, inside out with the clippers back on the court tonight there's a growing buzz that clippers fan will wear black at tonight's game as their own show of protest. nbc's ron allen will be covering the announcement for us. ron, i think we have you here now. what can the nba do? >> reporter: ronan, that's the big question. it's really unclear what the commissioner can do. the nba is a private organization and its constitution and bylaws are secret. while there's talk of punitive things, it's unclear whether he can and whether the owners, other 29 owners will go along with what he decides as well and what pushback there may be. you heard the statement by mark cube ban.

i'm sure they don't want a precedent set unnecessarily where the commissioner of basketball can dismiss an owner. there's talk of several possible things happening. for example, a suspension of some sort or a fine of some sort. we understand the limit might be -- draft picks which hurts the team and players and i think universal feelings around the country and certainly the nba community that the players should not be harmed by this. it's a delicate thing to some extent. how do you punish this person yet also send a message and also to some extent punish the team who did nothing wrong. these players are doing what they can to show their solidarity. this is a very emotional and difficult time because the nba playoffs are under way and of course the clippers are now one of the best teams in the league suddenly after being around for so long. that's a problem as well. >> this is more complicated than pushing them out without

consequences. ron allen, thank you so much. it's important to remember that this is not the first time sterling has been accused of this kind of racist behavior. several years ago former clippers manager baylor sued the team for wrongful termination in a suit that centered on age discrimination but included claims of racial discrimination as well. he went on to lose that suit but al vin pittman has talked about experiences of this man's racism during that process. he joins me now from los angeles. thank you for joining. >> hi, ronan. you spent hours deposing sterling, what was your reaction when you heard about these recordings? >> my reaction was that it's nothing new. the nba has long been aware of who donald sterling was. they were educated during that litigation. donald sterling made comments and elgin baylor reported them.

they are echoed in these tapes. i feel that in part the recordings bring to light that el elgin was right and nba failed to act when they were presented with the accusations long ago by the rep putable elgin baylor who stepped out alone, on his own and found himself basically unsupported by all of those who today say yeah, we knew this. we've long known that sterling was this kind of person. and so when i hear people asking, what should we do? what can the nba do? it's what can the nba and players association do collectively because the sponsors are saying we are aren't going to play. we are aren't going to play. the nba and players association should see this as an opportunity to act. i think they should take the air out of the ball. if they take the air out of the

ball they are principles at the bigger and more important than pursuit of a national championship. >> you think he needs to be pushed out. >> he needs to be pushed out but the players who are the product of the nba can take a unified action to effect wait that. >> let's talk more about your personal experiences with sterling. you told "the huffington post" you challenge him about his racist behavior. can you tell us what his reaction was? >> denial. denial. and i believe that at one point in his deposition while carl douglas was deposing sterling, he became so outraged that he made a a movement to him, he had gum in his mouth and attempted to spit that on him. >> you feel that was a racist gesture? >> well, when i view his conduct in a comprehensive context, yes. i believe that as elgin stated,

he maintained and manifested a slave-like mentality when he says he wanted his team to be constructed of poor black boys from the south and coached by a white coach, when he said he was given these poor black boys an opportunity to make a lot of money. i think that all is echoed in his rantings in the tapes. nba -- >> shocking statements. >> the nba can't say we're shocked by it. because the nba was actively involved in it. the nba regular lates every aspect of nba basketball. but when it comes to an important issue such as discrimination, something that as african-americans we've been fighting for a very long time to eradicate, the nba is mute. >> we will say what the nba does. they are coming up in just an hour with this announcement, a

lot of us waiting because these are shocking to the conscience statements. thank you very much. keep it here because we'll be covering that nba announcement expected at 2:00 p.m. eastern time. now to developing weather news. president obama just signed a disaster declaration for the state of arkansas. residents of that state are among the 76 million people across the midwest and southeast still affected bycy veer weather that includes tornadoes and large hail and flash floods. you can literally see the tornado here in this video sweeping across louisville, mississippi. over 50 twisters touched down yesterday and a number of people killed since sunday keeps rising, now stands at 28. the national gartd confirmed an airman was among those kilds in vilonia arkansas after a massive twister stayed on the ground for nearly 80 miles.

thing for the residents trying to clean up. other parts of the country could see severe weather today into tomorrow and deep south extending to the carolinas and tomorrow even the mid-atlantic states. as you mentioned, the president just signed this federal disaster declaration which will open up federal funding to this area where in arkansas 15 people died, eight of them in vilonia alone. debris is still everywhere and it's going to take a long time to clear this up. this is aspen creek drive. this neighborhood was full of military families and you can see pretty much everywhere you look an american flag on top of the rubble here. you managed to speak with the father of one of the victims, his son was 31 years old and in arkansas air national guard and with his family, his wife and two young daughters age 5 and 7 on sunday. his father describes what happened next as his son shielded his daughters.

>> grabbed his family up and got into the smallest hallway closest to the center of the house and laid down on top of them and covered them until the tornado hit and was gone. >> he gave his life for his daughters. >> yes, he did, trying to protect them. he's truly my hero. and i'm going to miss him greatly. >> reporter: daniel wassem was 31 years old. the national weather service declared preliminary reports indicate that this tornado was an ef-3 tornado, a tornado with winds of at least 136 miles per hour. the damage assessment is still ongoing. as you can see behind me, hundreds of people just in this neighborhood are busy cleaning up and they'll be doing it for quite a while. >> thank you so much for that report. gabe gutierrez, we'll watch the devastation in the days ahead.

>> income inequality is an issue that is exploding into the american zit geist on the decay of the american economy topping amazon to the new york times declaring the american middle class is no longer the world's richest. when it comes to inequality in america, race is the elephant in the room. the media net worth of latinos dropped 58% between 2005 and 2011. 48% for asian americans and 45% for african-americans. joining me now is new york congressman, a member of that congressional black caucus who spoke at today's press conference. thank you so much for joining. >> thanks for having me on. >> the average latino household has only of and 7, 6 and 7 cents respectively of every dollar of white wealth. why do you think that is?

>> it's very important for us to have an evidence based conversation about race and disparty as they exist in america as opposed to one anchored in ignorance of others like donald sterling. this report in exposing the great wealth disparity that exists. african-american communities were hit hardest by the great recession and we have recovered the least in terms of benefitting from the things that have taken place over the last several hours. one of the reasons why the african-american community is to great is because a lot of our wealth to the extent it exists is wrapped up in homeownership. when the recession hit and housing bubble burst there were a lot of foreclosures. i represent neighborhoods in brooklyn amongst the most foreclosed upon in the state and country. that is disproportionately a problem and one of the reasons that explains the tremendous

wealth disparity. >> what do you hope will come of today's event? >> well, it's important that we focus on responsible policies in the congress unlike what has been put forth by paul ryan as republican colleagues that would cut the top tax rate for wealthy and high income eners in america while at the same time devastating the social safety net and programs like higher education, spending which will be cut by $260 billion by the paul ryan budget while at the same time we've got issues like african-americans and latinos in america not being able to achieve higher education completion at the same rates and we know that of course is a pathway toward the middle class. this is an american problem in terms of the declining middle class as has been recently documented and as you referenced earlier, ronan. but it's disproportionately impacting communities of color and in particular

african-americans. that's a bad thing for our economy as we become a more diverse country. we should be lifting everyone up and we can't leave certain communities behind. >> when you fault proposals like the paul ryan budget, i understand that your caucus is meeting with paul ryan tomorrow. i want to ask you about that. first let's have a reminder of his comments that got him into trouble with people who critiqued him with being potentially racist. take a look. >> we have got this tailspin of culture in our inner cities in particular of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the value and val tour of work. there's a real culture problem that has to be dealt with. >> it's important to note that paul ryan did say it is clear that i was inarticulate about the point i was trying to make. i was not implicating the culture of one community but society as a whole. but clearly there's it meeting happening which is viewed as

partly response to that. first of all, what do you think of those comments? and second of all, what do you hope will come of your conversations with congressman ryan? >> those definitely were comments that weren't based on facts or evidence. were really rooted in this narrative that has been designed to explain away differences that have existed in terms of the ability of african-americans and latinos and people in the inner city to achieve similar levels of educational and economic achievement as others in america. i expect it's going to be a respectful conversation tomorrow. but we have sharp differences. i said on the budget committee, paul ryan voted against it both in the committee and on the florida house of representatives and continue to denounce it as an extreme budget. but i think it's positive that we're willing to come together and have a conversation about our differences and hopefully be able to find common ground in terms of dealing with the problem of wealth inequality and poverty in america. >> it must be said that

back now with breaking news from georgia, a gunman open fire at the fedex facility 30 miles from atlanta injuring six people before taking his own life. one witness says the shooter had bullets strapped across his chest, quote, like rambo. this comes less than a week after the radical new gun law was signed. in our regular feature georgia gun watch we're looking at how life in georgia is changing

under what critics are calling the guns everywhere law. kerry sanders is live at the scene and joins me now with the latest. >> well, we're speaking to the folks at federal express to find out whether they had a specific policy that would have prevented employees from bringing guns to work. that law is yet to take effect. right now the police are investigating the scene. it's mostly closed down. you can see in the area where they are working that they have sent home most of the employees. there are some employees still being questioned. as you noted, six people were indeed shot today. one is 28-year-old male in critical condition. another is a 52-year-old female in critical condition. a 22-year-old male in stable condition and 38-year-old treated and released and 42-year-old female treated and released and 19-year-old male who will be released later today. doctors say they were lucky they were in the middle of a shift change when the victims came in. there were actually seven

doctors there, that was good news to treat these people so quickly. there is one woman who we spoke to, liza akin looked the gunman right in the eyes. >> he was in all black. i believe he was in camo and had a camo vest. he had assault rifle and bullet strapped to his chest like rambo. he was good. he did his work -- sometimes we would joke around. i never thought he would do something like this. she's talking about one of her co-workers who brought the weapon to work and did the shooting. fedex says our thoughts and prayers are with those affected. we're grateful with the assistance of law enforcement and the situation is stabilized and we are focused on the needs of the team members and cooperating with the law enforcement investigation of this tragedy.

recordings that have rocked the league became public. i'll be hosting a live web cast leading up to the news conference and that website will stream the news conference live just after this broadcast. first, switching gears, today secretary of state john kerry continues to weather political fallout from statements that proved insend dairy about israel. kerry warned a single state rather than a two-state solution could result in an apartheid state with second class citizens. yesterday he issued a lengthy qual fiction. in the same statement he went on to say i've been around long enough to know the power of words to create misimpression even when unintentional and if i could rewind the tape i would have chosen a different word. the political response has been swift and dramatic on both sides

of the aisle. steve israel, tweeted just this morning, john kerry's statement on israel was just plain wrong and republican texas senator ted cruz called on him to leave office. mr. president, sadly it is my belief that secretary kerry has proven himself unsuitable for the position he holds. and therefore before any further harm is done to our national security interest and to our critical alliance with the nation of israel, that john kerry should offer president obama his resignation. >> a measured response. joining me now jonathan altar and author of "the center" and reuters reporter who covered foreign affairs tore decades. do you think this reaction is merited. it's been so forceful, from ted

cruz to barbara boxer. >> i guess my question for senator cruz and others reacting this way is, would they say the same thing to two former israeli prime ministers who also used apartheid? do they believe that those prime ministers who ran the government of israel. >> that's an important point. >> they've used the term apartheid. >> and this specific beat of press is not getting as dramatic reaction in israel as in the united states. >> of course not. in israel they let people debate the issues. the problem with secretary of state using this line is that it just distracts attention and doesn't move the fro session process forward and creates a silly flap and doesn't help. i'm not saying it was a good thing for him to do. it's important to understand that israel is not an apartheid state now and that moral aprobe

yags is harmful to israel and i say that as a strong supporter of the state of israel. but the secretary was right that if demographic population trends continue, and there is no two-state solution, that israel will face a choice, they either will cease to be a democracy or cease to be a jewish state, one or the other. >> this is the important nuance that a lot of these responses overlook. he was not describing israel not not even talking about israel's intentions but talking about what happens if we run away from a two-state solution. do you think he should have foreseen this reaction? the word is so incendiary. >> this is classic john kerry, he'll have gaffes and make statements like this. he's tireless and won't give up and won't give up on the middle east peace talks but kind of used the wrong term. i spoke to one of his aides and they are making the same argument, this is a demographic issue in the future for israel, apartheid was clearly the wrong

term to use but there would be second class citizens if there is no two state solution. >> you mentioned the ten as city, he has gone in guns blazing, he said last year there would be a nine-month deadline, we'll resolve everything and did succeed in getting people to the table but there's been a lot of criticism about how he did this. should he have not put his eggs in one proverbial basket here? >> if the process falls apart, as it seems to be, putin is causing all kinds of problems and iran nuclear talks are a bigger priority than the middle east peace talks. i spoke with a kerry aide and he said secretary kerry and president obama think both sides israelis and palestinians will be back at the table later this year, that this will be a short-term thing and they'll make domestic political points but both know the reality is they need a two-state solution both the palestinians and israelis. >> jonathan, to what extent do you think this is spurred by

frustration with israel saying they are walking away from talks with the state of the peace talks here? >> i don't think it's his frustration. jimmy carter used the statement in a title of a book a few years ago. >> and he was not talking about a hypothetical but israel as it is. >> he was wrong to say that now because it remains the only democracy in the middle east. >> one of the things with kerry's team, they pointed out how different these remarks are from -- >> that's an important point. he's been saying this kind of thing privately because like many gaffes, it's all a gaffe of is somebody saying something politically inconvenient but happens to be true. and because it's true, everybody reacts. so i think the burden is on the critics of secretary of state kerry right now to explain why the basic point is not true and

just to really illuminate it for a second. because i think this could be educational for the american public. if present demographic trends continue, jews will be a minority in their own country. at that point if they want to maintain power, they will have to as david said, deny the arab majority the right to vote, no longer being a democracy. so that's what this is about. and the critics of secretary kerry have to explain why they think that's not the case. >> trying to argue -- >> the demographics are a lie. >> it's incumbent on the critics to say we need to defend the two-state solution for the reasons we're talking about, they are standing by the substance of hey, a two-state solution matters, we can't walk away from that. on that point, david, as we part ways, since 2002, a two-state solution has been the american party line on this and has significant support popularly speaking on the israeli and palestinian side but that

support is waining. do you see israel walking away from a two-state solution entirely? >> they could in the short term. it's back to the domestic politics, all politics is local. it's good for netanyahu and abbas to walk away from talks as demographic issues emerge, will netanyahu change his position and can the palestinians unite and create a functional government? these are huge questions. what do they do -- >> if this creates more pressure on israel to move towards a two-state solution, that's a good thing. >> we'll see how it plays out for john kerry and turn back to you as this all develops. all right, next up on the program, wallace simple son once said you could never be too rich or too thin. is that true, the second part at least? we're asking that question in today's call to action coming up next.

keerry blakely who writes for the stir. tell me about your own personal journey. >> i've always been thin. and people would always -- there was always sort of whispers around, did i have an eating disorder and actually recently one of my friends, which is what i wrote babout -- >> you did not have an eating disorder? >> no, i love to eat. one of my friends very teary eyed confronted me and asked me if i was bulemic and the way she got the idea i'm thin and i mentioned i need to go to the gym. she saw lipstick smeared on my lips so she put it all together and thought maybe he was bulemic and i appreciated her concern. it was a strange position to be in defending myself. >> this must resonate with you. she wrote and said, when i told them i believed i was beautiful just like everyone else, i sensed they thought it was

problematic that i thought i was beautiful. should skinny be considered beautiful in this time when we are working justifiably to make people fuller figured also feel beautiful? >> yeah, absolutely skinny should be considered beautiful. going out of your way to starve yourself should not be considered beautiful. but if that's your natural frame. >> a body mass index, 18.5 and 24.5 is considered normal. if an individual like this yale student is well below that, should that be called out? >> no, it shouldn't. i actually have a bmi of 17, i'm considered underweight and all of the doctors i've been to congratulated me on that. >> what about people who say the embrace of hyper skinny by the fashion industry, by the entertainment industry is damaging to fuller figured women? >> of course, anything brought to the extreme can be damaging and you see some of these young women who are -- you can see bones sticking out of their skin, they don't look healthy.

there's a growing movement on social media to where black as a show of protest agains sterling. among the groups participating is alpha fi alpha fraternity at the university of missouri. students tweeted out pictures of themselves wearing black with the _#blackoutagainsttheclippers. we are back with breaking news. we are now just minutes away from the nba making a statement. you see live pictures of the event there. this is when we could learn whether the league's commissioner will punish or sanction sterling over racially charged recordings. this just in, mandalay bay has just pulled its sponsorship from the clippers joining a growing list of fleeing sponsors. joining me to discuss is mike peska host of "slate's daily podcast the gist" which debuted just this week, and also a contributor for npr. thank you for joining. >> sure. >> what powers does the nba have to actually sanction in this case? >> that's a great question. that's the number one thing i want to fiend out in the press

conference because no one knows. their constitution is secret. different lawyers suggest adam silver can't strip him of ownership, and others suggest that maybe if you wanted to, he could fine the clause where he could. it seems like he can fine sterling a great deal. he can perhaps suspend him main definitely indefinitely, taking his team away from him, and that's something he is only able to do if the other owners vote on it. we're not sure. he will have to tell us. >> i take your point about the bilaws being secret, but is there no precedent we can go by? what's the nearest example? >> embarrassing odors. they've been able to shove them aside a little bit. you're a bad owner. in baseball -- owners have had their team taken away from them like that as sort of a seizure of a private asset, and, you know, mark cuban, who owns the mavericks, he made the point this is a private recording in a private home, and no one was

even suggesting breaking the law. >> is he getting a lot of blowback for those statements. >> he makes fair points. he says it's a slippery slope. >> you know, it's so sure is cuban saying anything to counter those comments, that sentiment? absolutely not. the point he was making is once someone has an asset worth -- the clippers are worth at least half a billion dollars, to take them from him because the owner is a moron, which is -- which was the cuban's words, that's something that hasn't been done, and something i think maybe the other owners would be pretty squared of, you know? what if i say something people don't like? what if i'm secretly recorded? what if the recordings were doctored, or whatever snl. >> i don't think cuban is saying he himself would fear this kind of groundswell of people rising up against owners? >> sterling is -- is he someone they've known has been racist for so long, and what really upsets me about this is not the tape that shows he is a racist. it's that when everyone knew he was a racist, when he was fined

by the government for not renting apartments to black people because they smell and attract vermon. those are his words. he was fined millions of dollars. >> is he almost a character tour of a racist. >> this old plutocrat that makes mr. burns look kind and gentle. >> the naacp was going to give him an award. >> they should be -- i mean, they went back on that. there was a long history of people buying their way out of trouble. the point is there have been apologists. it's not that his history hasn't been covered, but it's been covered so insufficiently that the coach of the clippers, doc rivers, a black man, smart guy, people respect doc rivers, says he didn't really know about sterling's past when he took the job. maybe a $4 million contract helps to not know that. >> that wraps things up for my part of the coverage here.

emphatic that what is reflect odd that recording is not consistent with nor does it reflect his views, beliefs, or feelings." nbc's ron allen is live at the news conference in midtown, manhattan. ron, what are we anticipating? is there any leak coming out of the nba as to what we're going to hear? >> no. short answer to that, not yet. i imagine this is going to be quite a moment for the nba as an institution because there's never been anything like this that this organization has confronted. one big problem is that it's a private organization, and we don't know the bilaws and the constitution, so we don't know what's possible. you know, there's been so much talk about suspending sterling indefinitely or for a long period of time, but essentially you would be severing an owner's relationship with his property, something that he owns, a basketball team, that's worth hundreds of millions of dollars. how do you do that? how do you keep him out of the games? how do you keep him from not contacting the general manager? can you really do that? would the other owners go along with that because it sets the
