we'll also have the latest on the kidnapped nigerian girls with new disturbing claims by boko haram. 2014 super tuesday, it's a huge day of primary voting and it's just eight days away, a week from tomorrow on may 20th. half a dozen states from coast to coast will give us important clues about the mid-term landscape as we head into the summer of campaigning. voters in arkansas, georgia, idaho, kentucky, oregon and pennsylvania all head to the polls that day. early voting is already under way in two of those states, arkansas and georgia. voters have been mailed ballots in a third. oregon is an all vote by mail state. three of the contests will test the strength of the tea party, the senate races in kentucky and georgia in particular and the

fight in idaho's second congressional district. then there's the race that combines big personalities, the highest legislative stakes and it likely to be one of the most expensive, ugliest races over the next six months. >> if people believe we need to go in a different direction, the only thing that can be accomplished in 2014 is to change the senate, make me the leader of a new majority going in a different direction. my opponent is new to politics but she would be a vote for the same old thing. >> senator mcconnell believes that she is not -- it's not his responsibility to bring jobs back to the state. it's the number one job and responsibility, it's my number one priority. >> mcmcconneitch mcconnell has target for years. he may be the most vulnerable he's ever been. he's persuaded republicans by running to the right.

he is crushing bevin in our poll by 32 points among likely republican voters, 57-25. what's the bad news for mcconnell? he's basically tied with allison grimes, in a state that president obama lost by 23 points. mcconnell just leads by one. obviously within the poll's margin of error. and mcconnell's approval rating is under water in the state. 46% of voters view him unfavorably, just 41% view him unfavorably. he may have problem using one of the democrats' biggest vulnerabilities, the health care laws. in kentucky, though 57% of registered voters told us they have an unfavorable view of obamacare, they have a favorable position of kynect. what happens to the

anti-mcconnell voters? in case you're wondering, among likely primary voters, 66% support mcconnell. does that number stay that way? by the way, one thing that mcconnell has done successfully according in our primary is he has made it that it's not a pure referendum, he has created a choice. that's what he's got to figure out what to do in the fall. to georgia. the governorship. democrats had hoped michelle nunn could put some points on the board for them. so far she's not building a lead against any of her republican competition and in more good news for the nrsc, the tea party candidates in the field are floundering. who is leading? businessman david purdue leads nunn, 45-41 among registered voters. congressman paul brown would

be -- up 3 on former secretary of state karen handle. best news for republicans is the two establishment candidates, david purdue and jack kingston are ahead in the crowded primary field. purdue is up and handle is third at 14. another one the establishment would be okay with. the tea party candidates trail with just 11%. it's almost certain the georgia republican primary race is going to head into overtime. no candidate is likely to win over 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff. expect the race to be between perdue or even kingston or handle. we see evidence kingston has been spending all of his time going after purdue of late. as for nunn, she is still overperforming over democrats in the state.

jason carter is down 10 in our poll, 50-40. now a new poll from the atlanta journal constitution is doing somewhat better, nunn beating kingston by 10 points and they have carter a bit closer than we do. but nunn's lead shrinks when asked how many were likely to show up at the polls. do african-americans and young voters come out? there getting registered now? is the electorate disproportionately white and elderly? overall democrats competing in the southern states still face stiff head winds and we're seeing it reflected inside the numbers, 32% in kentucky, 34% in arkansas and 41% in georgia approve. a strong majority, 59% in

georgia, 67% in kentucky and 69% in arkansas believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction. still, the question 2014 has always been whether individual candidates can trump the national environment. so far in arkansas, senator pryor, once considered the nation's most vulnerable incumbent leads tom cotton by double digits money just the late nest in a series of polls showing pryor comfortably ahead. he gets 32 of voters who disapprove of president obama in arkansas. pryor's favorable rating, a very respectable 50/35. but look at cotton, we have him underwater, 38/39. that tells you the particularly negative campaign the democrats have been running against cotton

is making hold more so than the cam pan the republicans have been running against pryor. pryor is leading by 7 points among independents. the republican there, asa hutch hutchisson leads by 7. if if you're cotton, you can't say the hutchinson numbers are skewed the wrong way. don't be surprised if former president bill clinton make appearances, they view him favorably. tomorrow we do have two primaries on the calendar, nebraska and west virginia go on the polls. we'll bring you more tomorrow on what to watch in those contests in that sleepy sleeper where a

take advantage of international notoriety? >> it really boils down to a hostage video. you're talking about video prove that the hostages are still alive, the hostage takers themselves making demands but it's more chilling because you're talking about teen-age school girls. by our account, there are a hundred girls or so in this video and 276 girls were abducted four weeks ago from their boarding school. so this is less than half of them. they're sitting down in what appear to be muslim dress and they are reciting versverses fr the koran. the video goes on to show a video with the leader. he is not with them and he was not with them in their first release. he says he will not release

these girls until prisoners of bo boko haram are released. chuck? >> we got word in a officials do believe this video is authentic. there seems to be more pressure being put on nigerian government officials. do they accept the blame here that they acted too slow? >> well, they're not going to come out and say that, chuck. but, you know, it took three weeks for the president of that country to make public comment and they have been widely criticized for not taking international help that was offered. and it's also important to point out that this portion of nigeria, there have been regular criticism toward the government of not assisting in really any way, shape or form. the economy is bad, there is no infrastructure or roads. the people there widely believe they are neglected and they have been neglected over the course

of this insurgency over the last five years, particularly in recent months. there was a report released by amnesty international that there were about four hours the day of this attack that military officials in the region had knowledge it was going to happen and they didn't send in reinforcement. unlikely the criticism on the nigerian government to go away until hopefully quickly they found these girls and bring them back. >> up next, clobbering clinton. just about every foreign policy headline in these days gets churned through a what did hillary clinton do or not do machine from the right. obviously it's all about 2016 but what is the strategy here? first our trivia question. first person to tweet the answer will get the on-air shout out.

libya, didn't send reinforcements and then gave us nothing but spin. my opinion is that hillary clinton has precluded herself from ever being considered for that position. 2016 run. she may have provided the opening actually for that in april when she discussed doubts about diving back into washington politics. >> i would be the first to say we're having a political period of, you know, frankly dysfunction. i saw it from afar when i was secretary and it was disheartening and even embarrassing to see people arguing about letting us default on our debt. i mean really. and things that were just so beyond the pale, you had to ask yourself what kind of country do they really want? >> joining me now, dan balz, chief correspondent for "the washington post" and columnist for bloomberg view. it is to me that whatever the foreign policy crisis that is potentially a problem for the president, there's a concerted effort on the right to say what

does this mean for hillary clinton? >> sure. but not surprisingly. i mean, this 2016 campaign and particularly all of the interest about hillary clinton and around possible clinton presidency has ginned up a lot of action way earlier than we would have expected. and i think that the foreign policy piece of this because that's what she did the prior four years, has become a flash point particularly on the right for a potential campaign. i think that will only intensify. we haven't heard her side of the story, which we'll hear when her book comes out in a month. i'll make one other point about that. we don't know at this point how important foreign policy is going to be in 2016 and that is a big question mark. >> it is. it is fascinating. hillary clinton was the most popular person in the administration, among republicans, for the almost entire four years. some of that was -- maybe people were responding i don't like

barack obama but i like hillary clinton. now is it fair hit? is there an overreach here? are you concerned of an overreach by conservatives to pin all this on her? >> i'm sure there will be some conservatives that overreach. i don't think the american public is going to blame hillary clinton for not producing a middle east peace break -- >> that went well over the previous four years. >> on the other hand, things like the russia reset i think people are going to say reasonably that that policy has been shown to have been naive. and even if you can't pin various disasters on hillary clinton, you can say what are the big accomplishments and i think it's so telling she's had so much trouble coming up with those herself when asked about

this. >> and there's dan's point here. we don't know the role foreign policy is going to play but with her resumé, what is new from '08 is that. how important is it that she make this -- keep it an asset. >> i think it's really important. i think the vast majority of people who don't live in the washington, d.c. area think she did a fantastic job at secretary of state. she still has high approval ratings for her time as secretary of state. dan's right, she'll have the opportunity to talk about the russian reset, issues like that. the fact is on the russian reset, when vladimir putin was going after human rights violations, there was one person in this administration who spoke out on behalf of that and really spoke with vigor and that was hillary clinton and vladimir putin went after her for that. i think she'll have an opportunity to talk about these issues in her book and i think she'll be able to talk about her successes as well. the various issues she's done

from burma and other issues. it wasn't easy but she did make progress as secretary of state. >> dan, first of all, do you think she has to answer these charges and be a little more aggressive? you also want to walk a line and not talk too much about foreign policy. >> absolutely not but presumably she'll be able to get some of that discussion not out of the way and settled over the next three or four months but at least you'll have a different balance of voices instead of constant criticism, criticism, criticism, you'll have point, counterpoint, point, counterpoint. so some of that will get taken care of. some of these issues, and benghazi is one, animates the republican base. they are very much of a mood at this point that hillary clinton bears significant responsibility for that and that will continue. i don't think that's going to get settled in the next six month. >> but she has a lot of experience with a right wing that's ginned up. i don't think that's going to make or break for her.

>> could they poison the environment enough where they say i don't want this? i think that is the only lingering question i have in my mind. does she want it as much? is she so much that she's willing to deal with what's going to be a poisonous -- >> she's going to make these decisions. i would say i don't think she's going to get scared off and her decisions will not be determined by the republican base. it will be determined by whether she wants to run and if she wants to run for country. this is not a woman who himself been scared off throughout her time in office and i don't think she will be now. >> do you think there should always be this drum beat going after hillary clinton in order to continue to plow the field for a republican challenger? >> she is an unusually commanding position within the democratic primary. it makes sense there will be so

president. >> joe biden is very curious whether she's going to run for president. an iowa business leader showed up this week and he somehow popped in their meeting, he went to south carolina for a fund-raiser. there was some talk that he sat there and was more populist than we had heard joe biden be, though i would argue that's who joe biden is, he's always been sort of a core populist and he was sounding, as some put it, like elizabeth warn. >> well, he is going to run if he's going to reason. >> he's made it clear if she runs he's not going to do that. >> i agree with you, chuck. i think he's always been more populist than some people think he is. he wears that kind of blue collar, scrappy persona and i think as we hear him playing these things out, it's the real

really change for the gop until a lot more recently. the number of republican senators doubled since reconstruction. the last republican elected senator in georgia was joshua hill in 1871. by the same token, before the last two republican governors, nathan deal and sonny perdue -- today republicans control the stat legislature and every statewide office in georgia along with both senate seats and 9 of the 14 house seats. nevertheless, democrats say demographics may point the way to victory. if y-- it looks a lot like atlanta. atlanta saw its population grow

dramatically overs last decade or so, growing by an astounding 24%. it accounted for more than half of georgia's total population and more than two-thirds of its population growth over the previous decade. guess what? many of the states new residents are non-white. in 2012 the african-american population grew to nearly 1-3, the white population tell by more than 10 states. the party is strong in atlanta in a spring of heavily african-american counties near augusta. the rest of the state is solidly red. with me now to sort of set the table for our week-long look at georgia, jim galloway. jim, good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. good to be here. >> you've been here through these changes when democrats controlled every lever of power.

you see republicans now controlling every lever today but democrats being competitive as they are. when you look at this landscape and i've had a lot of democrats tell me georgia is the next north carolina, it's the next virginia, it's the next one that pops in the old confederacy states, do you have buy it? and if you do, when do you buy that change happening? >> well, i do think that the state is maybe on the bubble by inclination, but i don't think it's there by habit. if you -- that was a great history that you had of the state politics and georgia outlasted every other state in the deep south by i think maybe 20 years in terms of retaining democratic control. and i think you're likely to see that very same thing happen with republicans. they will hang on -- this is -- the levers of power are very, very strong in this state and they'll do everything they can

to keep it. i think what you see in the long-term democrat being plan is i guess they're excited to have jason carter and michelle nunn look like they'll be on the top of the ticket and raising scads of money but the money part is what they're interested in. they want to see voter registration of potential democrats increase and increase. that will be followed by 2016. maybe you've got hillary on the ticket. if so, she'll probably make a play for georgia. then comes the money year. that's 2018. that's a redistricting year. >> you know what's interesting about this, you talk about this voter registration campaign. to me that is what will make -- either make or break georgia in 2014 is how successful democrats are right now. that are supposedly spending a ton of money on the ground. have you seen evidence of it? do you buy they're spending their money wisely, that's they're doing in georgia -- i'm told they're trying to do in georgia what the obama campaign

did in northern virginia in '08, '12 and they're trying to do some massive registration campaigns down there. do you see evidence of it? >> not yet. not yet. i haven't seen it yet. i would think that they're probably waiting until after the may 20 primary to really kick things up. one thing you might want to keep an eye on is our republican secretary of state just introduced a system of online voter registration. do you vm some republicans in the state who are worried that that may give democrats a slide edge. >> you saw our numbers, you've got some other numbers. we could argue on the numbers about where the senate race is but it's basically showing the race in a similar place. david perdue is the one who surprised people by how he's jumped out. it looks like he's secured one spot in the runoff.

tell me a little bit about him. >> well, he's the cousin of our former governor, sonny perdue, he's ron rebach, do-- run reebo dollar general. he's doing very well. what's interesting in this race is you kind of have -- if we can talk about handel in a minute, between jack kingston and david perdue, you've got a kind of a shadow of the newt gingrich/mitt romney contest of 2012. >> who's playing the role of newt here? >> that would be kingston. he is a former accolade of

gingrich, came in congress with newt. he supported him through the election. romney the parallels are there, a businessman who has done well through mergers and acquisitions. in a debate last night you had kingst kingston saying you put david perdue in the nomination slot and democrats will go after him as a job killer. >> is the tea party not as strong as georgia as it is in other states in the republican primary? >> well, it's a difficult question. number one, i don't think you have in paul brown or phil gingery the kacharismatic figur you have in ted cruz or ron

paul. he's not going to fire people up. phil gingery has money but he's had a couple super pacs come out and try to push him away. paul brown, we had predicted maybe about this time last year that he would be -- because he had the backing of the ron paul group that he would be able to tap that internet source of funding and it just has not happened. >> it does seem as if the money issue has dragged him down. jim galloway, appreciate you setting the table for us. i'm sure we'll be checking in give again. >> appreciate it. >> time to check in with the next number on the data bank. 592 is the number of valid signature that long-time michigan congressman john conyers submitted to be on the primary ballot. the problem is it's more than

the city, you have to pass through the ukrainian government checkpoints and once you go through the checkpoints, you are in territory held by the pro russian militias, and it was in places like this yesterday that this referendum took place. there was no transparency and no international monitors and according to the organizers and perhaps not surprisingly 90% or roughly 90% of the people who came out to cast ballots, cast the votes in favor of breaking away from the government in k v kiev. the government in kiev clearly is not recognizing this vote, and they call it illegal, and washington says it is not recognizing the vote, and the state department has denounced the referendum, and moscow today said it will respect the wishes of the people of the southern and eastern ukraine. chuck? >> thank you, richard. i have to say that i have doubts when any result is 90% or better in any supposed election like that. >> all right. before a quick break, we have
