in this country that really want us to find a boogeyman when it comes to any kind of government regulation or control. supporters of the racist free loading rancherranch e eer bun back at it again. fox news planted the seed. fox news devoted countless air time promoting bundy as i think it was a great american as a great american hero. fox bailed once they found out he was a racist. but it was too late. the bundy movement has blossomed into a weed that really no herbicide can kill. they have armed -- been armed, they aimed rifles at federal agents. set up road blocks. perfectly good citizens out there abiding by the law.
2:03 pm
they have intimidated reporters. they have put their foot down drawing their line in the sand so to speak. this weekend, bundy supporters staged a protest against the pure bureau of land management and recaptured canyon, utah. i thought i had heard of recapture canyon utah and i thought it had a lot to do with native americans and sure enough, these protesters rode their atvs in opposition to the blm closing of certain trails in the area. now, the group is also upset about some slow approval over some new trails that might be out there. overall, the theme in recapture park was very simple. these people are upset with the federal government. >> i was back in here when i was in high school. i know we've been here forever. and for a governmental agency to just acquire it, to just take it over say it's not yours anymore,
2:04 pm
that's really frustrating. >> it's what we're here for is to do the hard things and tap up and do what is right and tell the federal government we've had enough. >> the polimessage is that we'r frustrated and the federal government is doing nothing to solve it. but we're not bad actors. we're not looking to cause problems, not looking for violence. >> really? well, some of the protesters were peaceful and followed the rules. there were no arrests or confrontations at this event. others showed up with armed assault rifles and they broke the law. they rode atvs on closed trails, the trails ran through sacred native american cultural lands of the navajo nation. >> it also attracted people unafraid of confrontation. cliven bundy and his family rode their atvs into the banned area. he says staying in the blm

2:06 pm
investigating the armed standoff. they are looking into threats against law enforcement officer, illegal weapons and anti-government militias. the seed of hate against the federal government, it's growing out west. and things are getting worse. more and more people are joining the ranks to protest the bureau of land management. it could be blamed on one thing as i see it, and that is the conservative media. you see, the conservative media hates barack obama so much and can't stab the liberal platform so much that they want to view them as a threat and the best way to do it is to give the microphone to people like this, platform them up for two weeks on a cable network, don't back down until there is unrefutable evidence that the guy is a racist. i won't forget about that. so now we have got government officials in this country wondering what do we do if we
2:07 pm
try to enforce the law and people are openly armed with assault weapons. these folks want something to happen. they want the government to react. so they can react and then who knows what the hell will happen. so how do we diffuse all of this? maybe it would be good if the network in question that was so in love with cliven bun decide wou bundy would say something to these folks illegally on the land with the atvs. maybe you should go through the normal channels of protest. do you have representatives in washington? are they with this sgloud no one knows where it will end or how it will end and it's kind of scary. it has the roots of a movement that won't end really peacefully. i hate to say that. but this is how it goes, isn't

2:09 pm
made their presence known. >> did you interview them or talk to them about why they were showing up out of their area so to speak? >> i certainly tried. they had little interest in talking to me and frankly, they were pretty openly disdainful of the media. >> what did you want to do when you were there, what good you want to ask them, what did you not get out of them that you wanted to get out of them? >> i was very interested in why they traveled to utah and wanted to participate in this event. and why they felt it was necessary to come armed. >> what role did a county commissioner play in this. >> well, that he an interesting question. phil lineman helped organize the event, but he oftentimes would say he was not organizing it, but he really did help stage it and was an emcee at a rally ahead of time. so he played an important role. but we have to be very clear he was doing it as a private individual.
2:10 pm
>> doing it as a private individual, but making a public appearance as an elected official. he's a county commissioner who reportedly has taken the same position of cliven bup deci en when it comes to recognizing the federal government. is that characterized correctly? >> i don't know if he'd go that far. l lyman's position is that they need to have more control. it's at least 90% federal land there because of the navajo reservation. but it's mostly federal and they are concern that had they are being shut out of the decision making. and that's in large part what motivate that had proced that p saturday. >> the atvs have not been allowed on these trails for some time i understand.
2:11 pm
>> that's right. it was closed to atvs in 2007. what prompted that was the discovery that a trail had been constructed through there and had done damage to a number of arc loheological sites. it is incredibly rich and dense with archeological sites. so what happened was they found this damage to these sites and a year later decided that it was best to keep it closed to atv use to preserve those sites. >> so the bureau of land management made the decision because the land was misused not to allow the atvs to go in there anymore, to respect the rights of the navajo nation, correct? >> that's correct. but they were reviewing an

3w4riks that t application that the county made to establish a right-of-way. they were trying to figure out how to route the trail in a way that would not impact those sites. that has dragged on for several years and the political leaders in that county have pretty much lost patience. >> so we can only speculate why people out of the region showed up at a local protest. as a professional reporter, how would you characterize it? >> that would be pure speculation. but i think they identify the recapture protest with this larger movement to defy federal authority. >> okay. brian, good to have you with us tonight from the salt lake tribune. appreciate your time. let me bring in former montana governor brian schweitzer. good to have you yu you on toni. your thoughts on what would settle all this down. you've done a lot with bureau land management as a governor being involved in situations like this. what scares you about this, what

would diffuse it? >> well, even more importantly, as you know, i'm a third generation rancher here and i have a master's degree, so i understand the resources. leading up to the dust bowl, folks used the land for whatever they wanted. this they diverted the rivers and it created the dust bowl. so now we is professional managers who are managing your land. this land belongs to somebody in new york just like it belongs to somebody in utah. and what these professional managers are doing on the ground is saying what is good for the resource? how many cattle would we allow to graze here? where is it roept appropriate t atvs? how can we best take care of this land? and now this cliven bundy bunch giving advice to people in utah on how to deal with the blm? that's like the aryan nation
2:14 pm
giving advice for donald sterling. the bundy bunch are grifters, they haven't paid their fees, they haven't cooperated with the federal government. they don't even recognize the federal government. and these tea party militia fox trotters are a bunch of ne'er-do-wells, they aren't people that have legitimate businesses on the land. you wouldn't get ranchers to stand next to bundy. people in the mining and oil and gas business on federal land, they wouldn't stand next to these people because they make a living on that federal land and they listen to the rule of the land. >> so the ulterior motive is to make the bureau of land management, the boogeyman here. these people are really upset about any closed trails or any a it tv access issues. >> well, they might be, but there are millions of other acres that they can go to.>> we there are millions of other acres that they can go to.tv ac. >> well, they might be, but there are millions of other acres that they can go to.>> we there are millions of other acres that they can go to.

when folks think about wthey think salmon and energy. but the energy bp produces up here creates something else as well: jobs all over america. engineering and innovation jobs. advanced safety systems & technology. shipping and manufacturing. across the united states, bp supports more than a quarter million jobs. when we set up operation in one part of the country, people in other parts go to work. that's not a coincidence. it's one more part of our commitment to america. in pretenders tonight, history buff. the texas congressman has a head turning theory about gay marriage and the holocaust. >> people that tstand up and sa i agree with a majority of americans, i agree with moses and jesus that marriage is between a man and woman, now all of a sudden people like me are
2:49 pm
considered haters, hatemongers. evil. which really is exactly what we've seen throughout our history as going back to the days of the nazi takeover in europe. >> louie is a little short on his nazi history. gay people were really the ones being persecuted in hitler's germany according to the holocaust museum. between 5,000 and 15,000 gay men were interred in concentration camps. these prisoners were marked by pink triangle badges, homosexuals were among the most abused groups in the camp. if louie gohmert thinks he's being persecuted the same way the jews were, he can keep on pretending. whatever happened to good?

but i learned to live with my blindness a long time ago. so i don't let my blindness get in the way of doing the things i love. but sometimes it feels like my body doesn't know the difference between day and night. i struggle to sleep at night, and stay awake during the day. i found out this is called non-24, a circadian rhythm disorder that affects up to 70 percent of people who are totally blind. talk to your doctor about your symptoms, and learn about the link between non-24 and blindness by calling 844-824-2424. that's 844-824-2424 or visit your24info.com today. don't let non-24 get in the way of your pursuit of happiness. more than your wife...

switch to comcast business internet and get two wifi networks included. comcast business built for business. >> this is a story for the folks who take a shower after work. on saturday, history was made at the nfl draft. michael sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted by an nfl team. st. louis rams selected the university of missouri defensive end in the seventh and final round. sam was the 249th overall pick. camera crews were there when sam got the phone call which saved his life. >> there you see him on his
2:54 pm
phone. there you see the raw emotion. we've seen this so many times over and over again for so many players. >> folk, that's the game changer. millions of americans watched the nfl draft. no one bats an eye when a prospect celebrates by kissing his girlfriend or wife. the culture of sports is evolving and this moment in football will play a role in afciafc i -- affecting social change. sure, there were reactions, bust this image tells the next generation of young gay athletes it's okay to be who you are. of course, the folks across the street had an entirely different spin. >> we're talking about a double standard. because demarcus walker, who is a linebacker at florida state tweeted out this, you all praise michael sam for being gay, be uh you all mock tim tebow for being a christian. smh, shaking my head, #society. >> another commenter said is, let me get this straight.
2:55 pm
tim tebow is open about his faith and gets major backlash. michael sam is open about his sexuality and gets major praise. i heard many people that thought the display after he was chosen was inappropriate. i hope he does so well, but i thought when he, you know, when he was really going at it. >> joining me now is the retired punter from the minnesota vikings in the nfl. chris, good to have you with us. would this have happened five years ago? what's changed? >> no, i don't think this wow happened five years ago. in terms of civil rights progress, it's been positively lightning fast. you know, you look back in the early 2000s, and you had guys openly speaking out against gay players saying they would never have a gay player in the locker room. we made a lot of really good strides. there's still plenty of work left to be done because he was oorjally patrioted as a third round pick and ended up being taken at the end of the seventh. so still more work to do. >> there's a big difference
2:56 pm
between the third round and seventh round. michael sam on record saying that he should have been drafted higher. what's your response to where he was picked and by the team as close to his college, the university of missouri, the st. louis rams. >> well, i think he has a fan base already there and the rams know that. they know this is a guy who will get fans out to the game. i think he definitely should have been taken higher because he was the sec all-defensive player of the year. and the previous sec defensive players of the year, i think, have all gone in the first round. maybe one went in the second round. so it's something that, you know, for him to go in the seventh round really shows you that there is something going on there. for a lo the of teams, it ma i not even be bigotry, it may be they don't want the whole distraction aspect. but on the flip side, tebow got drafted in the first round and he brought all sorts of baggage with him. what's the difference between him and michael sam? >> according to producers at espn and the nfl network, there
2:57 pm
was really absolutely no hesitation in airing michael sam's reaction with his significant other. what does that say to you? does this go beyond football? >> yeah, i think it's a really good sign. there shouldn't be any hesitation. it's a player who just got drafted. this is one of the most exciting days of his life and he's celebrating it with the people that he loves. and one of those happens to be his significant other. why does it matter if it's a man or a woman? we have commentators basically lusting over players' girlfriends. brent musburger, that was a little awkward. but it's all of a sudden now people think it's a big deal when michael sam kisses his boyfriend? it's the exact same thing. two human beings who lue each other. >> out sports reports that jerseys with michael sam's name on it are currently second in sales. he not only has a local fan base, he's got a national fan base. what do you make of it? in fact, it's ahead of the guy that was picked number one, clowney, overall in the draft. who was the first pick.
2:58 pm
so people are showing support with their wallets. that's got to help. >> yeah, and i think it's a really good sign for society as a whole. what it does is it shows you that people care about this. people are invested in this. and now they have a role model. they have someone who they can look up to. and michael sam is much like jackie robinson. he's the first person to be in the league that other people can look up to. and you know, it's a great day for the united states. >> chris cooley, you have never stopped being an advocate. you felt you were let go for speaking out in support of marriage equality. what would be your advice to michael sam? does he have to watch what he says and how he handles himself or? how do you see this playing out in that form, in that way? >> well, i think he has an advantage in that the team knows and players on the team know that mike is openly gay and it allows the coaches to set an atmosphere of saying hey, mike
2:59 pm
is a good football player, he's a gay football player and if you don't like that, then don't let the door hit you on the way out. you're not going to be on this team if you can't handle that. that's on the top down. all mike has to do is go out and play football. he knows how to play, just stay relaxed and go out and do it. >> what about that? what if he ends up making the team, gets a starting position. i don't know what the situation is with the rams. if he recovers a fumble, intercepts a pass or gets noticed in the statistics of playing, any kind of criticism will leave the sports arena, won't it? >> yeah, it will. and for mike, it's going to be a slightly tougher situation in st. louis because they do have a very strong defensive line. he's going to be competing for a fairly limited spot. but what he can do is go out and show on special teams that he's there to contribute any way he can. and, you know, st. louis may end up cutting him, but f he gets the chance, if he's allowed to

show during otas and fre season, just like everyone else is allowed to show what they can do, that's what we're looking for. your sexuality shouldn't matter. >> thanks for joining us. "politics nation" with reverend al sharpton begins now. >> good evening to you, ed. and thanks to you for tuning in. tonight's lead, speechless in the gop. the affordable care act is working and republicans literally don't want to talk about it. it's quite a change from the beginning of the year when they were plotting another year chalk full of healthcare repeal votes. >> this law is a disaster. in my opinion, obama care is on borrowed time. >> we need to repeal every single word of obamacare. >> if i had my wie about it, we would repeal obamacare and start all over and get it right. >> we could repeal obamacare and get this monkey off the backs of the american people. >> it was
