wait until you hear the figure. this is "way too early." ♪ my tie was a little crooked there. it's a thursday. i got to get this right. hi, everybody. it is thursday, may 15th. welcome to "way too early." the show that loves surveillance cameras especially when they are pointed at someone else. wait until you hear the number, though, that tmz allegedly paid to get that video. pretty shocking. we begin in turkey where the country is coming to grips with its worst mining disaster yet. officials believe about 150 others are still trapped inside after the underground explosion. more than 300 people have been rescued. rescue crews are pumping in fresh air, but a fire inside the mine is hindering those search efforts. violent demonstrations broke out around the country with protesters claiming turkey's
2:31 am
government failed to address mine safety issues. protesters attacked the car of turkey's prime minister shouting murderer and say he should resign. he said the mine accident was not out of the ordinary. he was forced to seek snaft a supermarket. there were also heated clashes in istanbul. police used water cannons and tear gas to keep the protesters at bay. the line was last inspected in march. however, there were no issues then detected. it is now one month since an islamic militant group captured nearly 300 school girls in nigeria. and the u.s. is stepping up efforts to help find them safely. long-range drones called the global hawk. they can travel 187 miles and are undetectable. they believe the girls have been split into three group but are still in nigeria.
2:32 am
the white house says special forces going in is not on the table for now. >> we're not actively considering the deployment of u.s. military personnel in a combined rescue attempt. weld have to know where the girls are as a simple proposition before we could discuss rescue attempts. >> meanwhile, britain's prime minister -- previously said all option were being considered. and members of a village in nigeria say they have killed dozens of members of boko haram planning to carry out another attack. firefighters are working through the night to control nine separate wildfires. the flames have already scorched more than 9,000 acres in some heavy populated areas. emergency officialed yesterday called for mandatory evacuations. triple digit temperatures and dry conditions with one of the

worst droughts on record are making an unusually early start for the fire season. experts say it could be a long and dangerous fire season considering it does not usually begin until october. in a few hours, eric shinseki will testify on capitol hill over allegations that veterans were delayed treatment at military hospitals. much of the focus being in phoenix where a long-time physician says up to 40 vets may have died waiting for treatment. it was said they were told to hide delays in their care. the scandal triggered a federal investigation. senator john tester of montana was on "morning joe" yesterday where he defended the department. >> there's a lot to talk about from a positive standpoint. i think they've done a pretty remarkable job if you consider

i understand the circus that this becomes. you get 61% of the vote in a blue state in november and all of a sudden a couple staff people do things they shouldn't have done, i fire them, and this becomes the biggest story for a couple of months. >> are you still thinking about running for president and when will you make a decision on that? >> yes and later. >> yes and later. all right. so there is a major shakeup at "the new york times." jill abramson has been dismissed from her responsibilities at the paper. or at least that's the way "the new york times" puts it on today's front page. the publisher said this decision was made because there was a, quote, issue with management in the newsroom. however, there appears to be another issue at play here. equal pay. the new yorker breaks down a different side of the story. he writes, quote, several weeks ago i'm told abramson found her pay and pension benefits at executive editor and before that as managing editor were considerably less than that of bill keller, the male editor
