trwith secure wifie for your business. it also comes with public wifi for your customers. not so with internet from the phone company. i would email the phone company to inquire as to why they have shortchanged these customers. but that would require wifi. switch to comcast business internet
2:54 pm
and get two wifi networks included. comcast business built for business. well come back to "the ed show." this is the story for the folks who take a shower after work. talks over the controversial transpacific partnership are heating up. trade ministers from pacific rim countries will be meet this weekend in china. ministers from 12 nations negotiating the tpp will gather in singapore on monday and tuesday. so we're down to the wire here in many respects. president obama is getting pressure from corporations to move the united states forward on a bad trade deal. negotiators have been stalled -- negotiations have been stalled since 2010. progressives should be speaking up and asking the president of the united states to stop this deal. every time america enters into another trade deal the trade
2:55 pm
deficit grows and good paying jobs are shipped over there to not come back. just look at the trade deficit with china. in to 001, china was given preferred nations trading stat sus. since then, the u.s. deficit with china has skyrocketed. in 2012, the trade deficit was roughly $540 billion. now, that might be just a number to you, folks, but those are american jobs. the united states has lost more than 2.7 million jobs as a result of the trade deficits with china. president obama needs to listen to u.s. labor leaders and lawmakers who are calling for fair trade, not free trade. larry cohen, communication workers president of america is with us here tonight. larry, good to have you back with us. i want to ask about your union, what country involved in the tpp is the worse for the communication workers of america? >> well, i think for all of us
2:56 pm
here, it's vietnam. whether union or not, with the 28 cent an hour average wage, virtually no protections on child or forced labor, virtually no environmental standards, and even worse, it is the provisions of tpp that will allow international companies to sue vietnam if they ever get a decent government that believes in human rights and economic justice because they can sue over the loss of future profits. and what's included in this deal. this secret tribunals that allow them to sue for the loss of future profits. there's 500 of those cases around already. not involving vietnam, because we don't have a bilateral deal with them. but that's the starting point for what's wrong. there's nothing here on currency manipulation. there's nothing that gives the same kind of enforcement on labor environmental consumer standards that gives to multinationals and banks to sue for future loss of their
2:57 pm
investment profits. it's all bad. it's boehner trade. it's not obama trade. we're looking at boehner trade here. right now, the house caucus is rejecting and we need to call on this president to say no. that if we don't have a majority of the democratic caucus, no to boehner trade. >> well, the president goes around the country and he talks about jobs. the president has been talking about infrastructure this week. building bridges and such stuff as that, but i haven't seen the president really go out on the campaign trail, so to speak, and talk about the tpp. i think he knows in his heart and his mind that this is a bad deal but he's being forced into it by the bankers. why don't we hear the president talk more out across the country about the tpp? >> i think he knows that he does not have the support of his own party. that pelosi, ranking democrat levett and others, a, they haven't seen the whole thing, which is disgraceful. and b, they're not going to support it as it is.
2:58 pm
and they've said that, 153 of them seened the letter. he has a choice to make. he's showing his own reluctance, is it boehner trade or do i stand with the caucus who stood with me on all the economic issues that boehner rejected? that's the decision he's going to have to make. >> well, he's quiet about the tpp, although when he gets in certain situations, the president talks about it. i mean, i just don't think he's terribly sold on it, but if he really thinks it's good for america, where is the sell job from the white house? they've had a trade negotiator go up and testify in front of congress, but that's really been the root of it so far. deep down dork they know it's a bad deal? >> i think deep down they know their own party does not support it. and that gives him some disquiet. and the base. this is not just labor. the 1,000 people we had in the ring here that lobbied last week were greens, students, progressives, consumer groups. virtually the entire base of the democratic party.
2:59 pm
and he's going to be turning on all of us if we goes ahead with this deal, or even worse, to try to fast track a deal we haven't even seen. >> and what about the grassroots effort. what kind of response do you get up on capitol hill. are you turning some people your way against this that weren't there before? >> i think number one, the more than 150 democrats in the house caucus that have already signed letter against this, they see the base is with them, and that's across the country. and number two, you know, from idaho to the deep south, republicans realize their base doesn't support this either they just want it to be a secret. we're going to make sure it's not a secret. >> well, if it's about jobs, it can't be about the tpp, that is for sure. larry cohen, president of the communication workers of america. great to have you with us tonight again, larry. thanks so much.
3:00 pm
"makes nation" with reverend al sharpton starts right now. thanks to you for tuning in. i'm live tonight from los angeles. tonight's lead, the greatest no show on earth. for months, months, far right extremists have been promising a giant rally in washington. their goal -- kick president obama out of office. here's what organizers expect. >> we're intending to field about 10 million to 20 million people in washington, d.c. and with we're going to close it down. >> wait a minute, that's why we have elections. >> we're going to go out into maryland and virginia. >> you're predicting 10 million people will be doing this? >> absolutely. >> 10 million people. really? and what, pray tell, are those 10 million people going
