>> the wildlife, now helpless in the face of the relentless on show flow of oil. >> a spill many animal habitats here simply eroded away. >> i heap, the regular people see it every day. but bp, they can't find it. thanks forewatching. you ever changed the oil in your car and come away with clean hands? ever gone into a mechanic's shop and seen everybody all clean? i grant it, you can clean up some things but the question is, can you clean up 210 million gallons of oil? or is this barrels? oh, who's counting? the gulf is great right now. we're getting a sell job we've never had before in this country. we start tonight where this image. this is a satellite image that was taken in the gulf of mexico

on april 27th, 2010. this spot right here is the water h deepwater horizon seven days into the spill. now two months later, june 25th, 2010. w 'the slick had taken a huge chunk of the gulf of mexico. and can we just inject some common sense into the american vernacular on the story? you just don't clean this stuff u stuff up in a few weeks or months or years. and now we're starting to question whether it's ever going to be cleaned up. the is this irreversible damage? some scientists say, yes. the question is, if this happened four years ago and it's still not cleaned up, what's going to happen? the keystone excel pipeline
2:03 pm
thing doesn't work out and something happens over the aquif aquifer? we makemake decisions that will jeopardize our water supply. why would we do that? well, we have the big oil. 210 gallons of oil leaked out of this rig. bp has spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to convince you, no big deal. forget it. we got this thing right. and forget this image right here. this is the image they don't want you to see. this is the image they don't want you to talk about and they sure as hell don't want it on the news. overall you have to say their advertising campaign has worked. the national media really isn't jumping on it like they should in my opinion. we're going to be on it a lot. i think we're still going to make some dumb decisions down the road when it comes to fossil fuels. we've completely can't forget this story. as folks down in louisiana are saying now, hey, it's the philosophy of out of sight out
2:04 pm
of mind. that's the strategy so far by the oil industry. meanwhile, for the people of the mississippi river delta, it's not out of sight. it's still very much in their mind and very much in their lives and destroying livelihoods. four years later, the bp oil spill is still plaguing the gulf of mexico. why are we satisfied where this? why aren't we up in arms over this? the oil is still washing up. it's still coming up on shore. the fishing industry has taken a major hit in sea life in the gulf. the sea life, well, it's in danger. here's cat island. this is a small island in the mississippi delta impacted by the oil spill. this is a picture of cat island taken in may of may of 2010. pretty awesome sight. isn't it? this island was the nesting ground for the brown pelicans. it's lush and green.
2:05 pm
it was vibrant and full of life and full of wildlife. so last month joinurnal irists decided to republican down there. >> as the crew disembarked on cat island there was a pamable collective gasp. >> it looks like the arizona desert. >> it lookslike the result of fire here but unfortunately, there wasn't a fire. it was just a oil spill degradation. >> so here's the comparison. you know the old saying, a picture tells a thousand words. this is cat island in 2010. this is cat island in 2014. does that look like it's been affected by anything? the color of it? this to that. and these trees to this little nesting stuff here. and by the way, where the hell are the birds? the birds figure it out but we can't.
2:06 pm
if this is bpees idea of recovery and this is the oil industry's answer to their mistakes, then this country is in deep trouble if we are allow this to continue on. this is what concerns the people of louisiana. wildlife and seafood in the gulf are in really bad shape. these pictures were taken last year. they showed deformed shrimp caught in the gulf of mexico. local shrimpers say it's a direct result of the spill. shrimp like this are caught all the time. they're doing a lot of sorting ask what they're doing. you know? this picture shows tar balls in a red snapper filet. how would you like to go in you're restaurant and say i think i'll have the red snapper on the menu tonight. throw in some tar balls. this is a redfish with tumors on it. if you're fishing and catch
2:07 pm
something that looks like that, you think, i can't wait to get home and grill this play by! would you think there might be something in the water that's affecting that? this picture shows a deformed crab shell, always good for hor deurves, aren't that? clearly you can see that the shell is missing. and finally, this is an image all too common along the gulf in recent years. a dead dolphin. there have been numerous reports of dead dolphins washing up on shore. before the spill this was a rare occurrence, a very rare occurrence. scenes like this have crushed the louisiana seafood industry. wow! i just -- crushed, what does crush mean? here's a vibrant business that's been crushed. oyster buyers are reporting a 60% loss in business. who would like to take a 60% loss in business and say, everything is okay. the largest shrimp buy her the

2:10 pm
2,666,000 pounds and this year we did 129,000. the numbers are clear. your not doing anywhere they're in the poundage that you used to do before the spill? >> not even in the same ballpark. you know? we're down to about 4%. it's a tough situation. it's hard to just imagine getting 4% of your check and see how good you'd be doing. >> well, what is happening? what is -- is the shrimp not edible. able to bring to market? what do you see and what's happening to the shrimp? >> basically, bp didn't pick up the oil. they came in and sprayed it. they actually refused to let the fishermen that were working for them pick up the oil. when the fishermen find oim they would make the fishermen leave and go about five miles away from the oil and throw anchor and come in at night with planes and spray itnd sink it to the bottom and the shrimp have to be
2:11 pm
able to bury on the bottom to hide and basically what bp did was asphalt the bottom of the gulf of mexico. in you seen that tar ball my nephew was holding, can you imagine trying to bury through that? it would be like triing to burrough through the highway. >> you're not the only seafood businessman down there. what's happening to everybody else. if you were the biggest one what's happening to a lot of the rest of them? >> i'm about the only one in about a 30-mile square. and basically, we got about a 50-mile square that's -- we still have three areas. even though bp has the commercials saying everything is opened and everything is good, it's not true. we still got three areas that remain closed from the spill. some say it was doing good but it's getting less and less. if you look at what happened alaska, five years after the spill, when they had a complete chance of the industry and i got

"vanishing pearl" that shows the people that made their living off the gulf. it's a shame what they did. a lot of people are suffering. every day we got to see it. bp ought to be ashamed of themselves and the government ought to be ashamed of themselves for allowing it to happen. >> so is bp lying in their commercials. >> if bp is temperatures you the sun is shining you better look. bp stands for bad people or buy y bayou polluters. >> and there has been a true -- >> no. it's a complete lie. complete lie. >> complete lie. tell us about the zoning map. >> well, basically, if you look at the match i map i sent you, there's a yellow area that's leased by the oil companies, so when bp says it's paying

billions of dollars, what they're not telling you is they're giving it back to themselves. look at where we live at. they put us in zone b where all around us, to the north, south, east and west, is zone a. but all that land nobody lived there. so where the regular people live l live nobody is getting paid. we got the oil and it looks like florida got the money. >> bp executives are claiming, at least in the story on "60 minutes" there's been a lot of fraud when it comes to the payout. >> bp wanted the fraud. they cut the deal to make it looklike fraud so they could appeal -- they wanted to become a victim instead of the villain. i told the lawyers when they cut the deal it wasn't a good deal. it was a good deal for bp. we offered to tell bp who was in the fishing industry and we offered to help them pick up the oilnd it took us about three wreex to realize they didn't want to pick up the oil. and they just refused any help. they wanted this to happen.

'sier to get it out of sight than to pick it up, i would imagine. quickly, dean, what's the future? >> well, that's the problem. the uncertainty. we don't know what we're looking at. it's hard to run a business and when you can't run a projection of what's going to happen next. i'm trying to convince my wife

everybody kpecht the tea party. i think he realizes he's put himself in a narrow box. the problem with rick scott and we talked about it, he's going to spend more than $100 million in his campaign and his problem is that he's already been very well defined from the perspective of florida voters. and he's not like the polls continue stand lip indicate. for him to change his image would cost a lot more than the $100 million he'll spend on advertising tearing down democrats and trying to build himself up. he has an image problem no matter how much money he raises it can't cure. his image has been set in concrete now. i think he has a significant problem. he knows it and he doesn't know where to turn. >> where does jaeb bush go on climate change? is he going to be a denier like the rest of them annette? >> i hope -- he tends to be better on some issues and certainly from the hispanic perspective, he's been better on immigration. but he hadn't said anything yet. i don't know where he's going to go.
2:45 pm
he's still, a lot of points like you said, 49 to 41 with hillary in his own backyard. so both jed and rue rubio have i problem with hillary. >> mitch, what about jeb bush on the national climate estimate? is he willing to put a cold shoulder to that and not it and stand with the republican party? >> well he's a little more cerebral than his brother, of course. and marco rubio, as we 15id with painted himself in the corner. he dried to break out of the tea booisht role and couldn't and i think jed will more or less hide on the issue for a while for as long as he can. i have no idea where he's going to go. he's shown a streak of independence which, frankly, doesn't serve him well in a republican primary for president. >> and then today, great to have you with us tonight.

is. and in "pretenders tonight" wage rage. the former reagan economist appeared on fox news to campaign for wage suppression. that's what it was. laffer says raising the minimum wage will hurt the poor? >> i'm really surprised. romney wanting to raise the minimum wage, that's anti-poor. we all want to raise the wage, but not a legal minimum wage. why not have a $30 wage because you have so many people employed and growth is so high. >> not so fast now, but isn't it interesting. romney didn't campaign on that.
2:51 pm
maybe that's why he lost. conservatives have wanted to deny the working poor a livable wage for too long. what part of lifting 5 million people out of poverty is anti-poor. corporations with booming profits still keep their workers in poverty. the minimum wage is meant to protect against corporate greed and i guarantee $7.25 an hour just doesn't cut it. if art laffer believes he's protecting the poor by exploiting them, he can keep on pretending. ple. they're why we innovate. they're who we protect. they're why we make life less complicated. it's about people. we are volvo of sweden.

u.s. corporations are exploiting a tax loophole, but republicans don't want to close this one, not at all. democrats are fed up with it. >> we need to act because we simply cannot afford for a flood of tax-driven deals to damage our financial future. >> all right, what's going on here? a group of 14 senators and nearly a dozen house democrats introduced legislation this week to tighten rules on corporate tax avoid dance through inversion. inversion means companies reincorporate overseas even though the business and the management remains in the united states. there have been more than 40 instances in the last deck wade and the democrats think it's going to get worse. companies are doing the math and avoiding paying untils of dollars of taxes in this country each year but making the money
2:56 pm
right here on our soil. a number of health care companies have done this technology. companies including applied materials and even the banana producer chaquita have produced deals to move overseas. it would essentially step any more inversions for two years. this gives congress times to pursue broad changes in the corporate tax code. big companies should not be allowed to avoid taxes at the expense of everybody else, but then again, they sure help ride the law. ron widen is the chairman of the senate finance committee. he is making a big push on this and kaudsing all the commotion. pulitzer prize-winning journalist david k. johnson joins us tonight. the author of "divided -- thegr inequality." how much money are we talk about here? and how much money are we going
2:57 pm
to end up losing? >> over time, the erosion will be significant and it will be tens of balls of dollars a year. and what's really going on fundamentally, ed, is a lot of these companies have decided they want to continue to enjoy all the benefits of operating here in the united states, the richest market in the world, but they want you and i and the listeners to bear the murder of supporting the united states that makes their profits possible. they don't want to share in the burden. they only want to enjoy the benefits. >> and how much resource do these companies put into tax avoid dance? they get like an army of accountants together? they have whole departments to figure this stuff out? >> general electric parentally has 800 tax lawyers working on their staff. this is an enormous waste of intellectual fire pow fer we put it into research manufacturing, we've got people in careers that produce product i have results would be much better. and we're not seeing that.
2:58 pm
and as long as you can game the system and make easy money off the tax system, we're going to see more and more of this kind of exploitation. >> they love to tell everybody that we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. what about that? >> on paper we do. if you're a domestic company and very profitable, you pay a high tax rate. but every one of the major international tax companies literally profits off the tax system. they siphon profits out of the u.s. and they literally make money off their taxes. i demonstrated in this numerous articles how it works. there are scholars who explain how it works. it's called stateless income. which is the ultimate goal. no tax anywhere. >> how much money will they throw at k street to stop any change from happening? >> as much as it takes.
2:59 pm
one of the things really helping big business is the republicans understand that getting people riled up, that the tax system needs reform, but doing nothing about it is like an atm that perpetually puts money into campaign coffers. don't solve the problem, just keep drawing attention to it, let the democrats make noise about it and then accuse the democrats of somehow trying to ruin the economy. >> so we clearly have an archaic and outdated tax system because we haven't done anything in 30 years. is that correct? >> yes. we have a tax system in america that's very well designed for the middle of the last century. but we live in a different economy today and we need to have fundamental reform of our tax system. i'm actually work on a project to design a tax system for the 21st century. i'm trying to raise some money to fund the research on it. but we need a tax system that flows from order.
3:00 pm
they're just talking about shifting burdens and making noise. >> david k. johnson, we'll follow up on that effort that you've got going. thanks so up many. that's "the ed shultz." "politics nation" starts right now. and you wonderful viewers have a great memorial day weekend. >> have a great weekend, ed. thank you. and thank you for tuning in. president obama confronts the broken gop. for years, the republicans have resorted to a do-nothing, block-everything strategy. bringing congress to historic levels of gridlock. in a desperate bid to undermine this president's agenda. and now the president is calling themg out for it. say, quote, when you hear a false equivalence that somehow congress is just broken, it's not true. what's broken
