can visit the glitz and glamour of new york in less than an hour, but in the outskirts of hackensack is a place where compelling drama plays out everyday. there are about 900 men and women incarcerated inside of the bergen county jail. most are only accused of crimes and awaiting trial or the resolution of their cases. many of them will also share something else in common. >> we are seeing a large influx of coming into our facility for heroin, prescription drugs and oxycodeine and things of that nature, but heroin is making a huge comeback and not just in the suburbs or the urban area, but all areas. >> reporter: alyssa schlossberg look no further than her own skin of heroin's comeback. >> i shot my feet, too, like in here, and little spots in here, here. my family being around them,

they know what these are. you know, people that don't know that i do drugs now can tell. so it is embarrassing. but nothing a little foundation can't fix. i have so many moments where i don't remember. i hear what happened, you know. when i was at the hospital, the nurse had told me that they found me naked on route 46. i had no recollection. before coming here, i passed out in front of a judge and didn't remember anything in court except for putting the handcuffs around me, and sergeant. >> this is schlossberg's first time in jail. she is charged with distribution of cocaine, and she has plead not guilty. but she does admit to living a drug-filled lifestyle with her boyfriend. >> we always had drugs, and people always calling him. we were caught up in that lifestyle.

it is not because of to drugs, but money. and we were eating like in his word, a boss. we had the money to do whatever we wanted. i love him. he is my everything, my baby and my father in some way, and my best friend and my soul matt and he is my other. >> and now schlossberg's other is now an inmate in the bergen county jail. thomas costa has charges of aggravated assault was recently on probation when he came to see schlossberg when he was arrested again. >> i was using heroin, pills. on my way in, i wasn't really thinking, leave them at home, somewhere because i thought that i would walk in and walk out just like i do every week. >> a visitor must pass through the metal detector to make sure they are not passing anything. they do not have direct contact with the inmates, and when he signed in, it popped up that he

had a warrant out for his probation violation. when it did officers went to arrest him. >> i was in the bathroom getting high at the time. when i heard the door open i heard keys jingling and two or three pairs so i knew cops were coming. >> and there is not a lot of people that come to the police jail to do drugs, but we weren't shocked that he did. >> >> i was not planning to get arrested. >> i asked him to step out and put his hands behind his back. and he did. then i asked him if he had anymore on him, and he said no. then i found the 13 decks, and he said, that is not on me, but that is in my wallet. >> now i'm in here with her unfortunately. it is funny how things work out. >> costa was charged with possession of a controlled

dangerous substance and he plead not guilty in hopes of making a deal for a lighter sentence. in the meantime, even though he and his girlfriend are housed in separate wings, and they can't see each other, costa says it is good to be under the same roof with her. >> and i miss the [ bleep ] out of her, and i feel closer to her now being in here. i feel like now we are both going through it together, you know? >> i feel weak without him. it is not because of lack of nutrition or anything, but it is lack of thomas. >> and they hope to qualify for the new jersey court drug program to help offenders sign up for rehabilitation instead of jail time. it is rigorous, and requires a commitment to drug rehabilitation and frequent testing. >> first step, the anger issues. >> the jail offers its own road to sobriety for inmates that

agree to abide bay strict set of rules. >> this is our drug rehabilitation center, in-house drug rehabilitation center. 90-day program for people within the bergen county jail snoochlt >> officer acakios is one of the officers who is in charge of the program. >> the gentlemen here wake up at 6:00 in the morning. >> no radios. >> and a lot of people who are not used to the structure think it is military. we don't run it like that, but i say things one time, and i expect for it to be done. for them it is military, but for anybody else, it is normal behavior. use the lockers, bathrooms now. and we have a lot of people coming in here thinking that the program is one way and after 90 days, they are totally different people. >> and thomas says he is a attest to that. >> it is nice to have my spirit come back to life. i was dead coming in here. >> serving four months for theft and robbery, he is about to

complete the 90-day program. in a few days he will be released from jail and continue the recovery in a drug residential treatment program. today, drug abuse counselor sam watson will honor the achievement with a special token. >> this coin is a token really of your ability to cope. it has no intrinsic value, but coping and completing this program in 90 days is a very difficult task. so the ability to get through it without being written up and kicked out is important. i hope you put the same effort into the discovery house that you did here. >> thank you, sam. >> you feel good to see them come in on day one and see the change in them. if we get too good at this, i will be put out of a job. that's okay. i will find something else to do. >> prior to his release, he must complete one more task, provide an orientation to the inmate that will take his spot in the drc, aaron.

jersey, bergen county jail, officials allowed us to give certain individuals video cameras for about an hour or so. the purpose was to allow them to record intimate thoughts about their lives in privacy. two of those inmates are thomas costa. >> i'm in here, useless. >> his girlfriend alyssa schlossberg. they are both facing drug charges and hope to be assigned to a rehab program in lui of more prison time. >> it is our crappy mirror but it is cool. you can see me through the camera and mirror, which is weird. but, i don't know. maybe there's a reason why people can't see their real self

theft and forgery. it is a tightly run program with a strict daily regimen that inmates must adhere to for 90 days or they are dropped. >> we have 5 a 8 rules in our facility and it is funny but they i could go, if they don't have their keys or locks on their lockers or if they leave out books or chairs down, we want them to focus and thinking. we don't want them too comfortable, always working on themselves. >> sofield, however faces an additional challenge. >> i'm 6'3" and my feet hit every time i try to sleep. i wake up freezing. i have drug dreams. it is natural. if someone is having drug dreams you are not using drugs. >> he believes if he doesn't get clean this time he will lose the support of his family and everything else he values. >> the co in charge of the

program he has put up with a lot of nonsense in this place. people come in complaining about this and that, but i'm thankful. really thankful for him. >> being in jail has kept me clean now for 2 1/2 months and i don't think i have ever been in clean in over four years. my body is getting back to, you know, a normal cycle. which is a good thing because for a while i thought i wasn't going to be able to have children. >> alyssa schlossberg has also had a heroin addiction. she's currently charged with distribution of cocaine and hopes to state part in the state's drug program. alyssa schlossberg would need to plead guilty, but instead of jail or prison time she would be sent to an in-patient rehabilitation facility and follow a protocol that includes

snoochlt. due to mature subject matter, viewer discretion is advised. hackensack, new jersey bergen county jail is not only a detention center for men and women facing a variety of charges it is a drug rehabilitation center. >> we were the first in new jersey to open a male drug rehabilitation center. it has been very successful. several years ago we opened a female drug rehabilitation center that has eight beds. that also has been successful. >> since the jab jail has more men than women, the male side houses 30 inmates. >> i don't have amateur addicts. i have the real mccoys here. i have guys that live on the street, highway patrolless. i don't have your weekend warrior. i have the everyday user. those are the people we need to help right now, stop the revolving door from coming in and out of jails and hopefully

basically 6. when i shot acid, this guy made me want to shoot acid. [ bleep ] it was crazy. when i did it, i could feel the acid crawling through my veins. it was wild. >> i took acid but not that form of acid. popped a couple of sheets. >> i would push the limits. the only way to be truly alive is confront your mortality. that's what i did on a daily basis. >> i never heard of anyone shooting up acid until i met you. >> i put xanax, cocaine, heroin, am fete means and oxycontin in the same needle and shot it crazy. i don't know how to describe that kind of high.

have you ever shot vodka? >> you're nuts. >> he had been on burglary conviction when tested and sent to jail. he was admitted to the drug rehab center but has been through numerous programs since age 14. >> this is my first time in jail and it sucks. it really sucks. i don't want to come back to jail again. the way i was doing drugs, i go back out the next time i stick a needle in my arm i'm going to die. my mother's afraid she's going to bury me. i know that for a fact. my dad's just -- my dad has almost given up on me. that's why i really -- i'm sick and tired of it. sick and tired of being sick and tired. >> he has a lot of problems. he knows that. he's been through a lot. for 21 years old. i haven't been through any of that. i wish him the best. i wish everybody the best in here but we'll see. never know. >> thomas costa is also an

admitted heroin addict, but he does his time in a general population unit. >> once we shot up it i progressed from there. we were up to 60, 70 bags each a day. that is almost $400 a day on drugs. >> reporter: costa was turned down for the drug rehab center because of past convictions involving violent crimes but he says he has another addiction greater than heroin, his girlfriend, alyssa schlossberg. >> i'm addicted to her than any drug i can put in my body. least i'm in the same building as her. >> other than occasionally seeing each other in on or thn the way to court, the couple can only communicate with letters and alyssa schlossberg just opened her most recent one. >> you alone make me a better man. as you continue to make me better every day you are in my life. i love you.

harassing them. >> but now they have developed a new method of communicating and although it is against the rules they are yet to be caught. each housing unit has a kiosks where inmates can order snacks or toiletries. >> i was on the commissary computer where we order food and canteen and i went to her account and figured out her password. it is our anniversary. i put in a few things. >> his favorite lotion is cocoa butter and i know what size boxers. so i sent him something back, coffee, hazelnut and sugar because he knows i like that. >> since commissary orders are filled on monday, they would erase the items they posted on each other's account in order to avoid being charged or arousing is suspicion. >> first we were going back and forth with funny food names. ways to know we are thinking of

one another. >> i was like let's see how smart he is. he wasn't smart when he came here. >> two or three days ago i see a bunch of numbers. she has a bunch of numbers, like ten lollipops and 15 envelope s. i'm like what does this mean. i have never seen so many numbers and i go to write them down and try to make sense of them and i write the alphabet down and every number symbolizes the a number of the alphabet. >> this is k and this is a word please. that's kplea-p-l-e-a-s---p---l-e and then the next page m-m-e please get me money asap. >> the jail version of texting. >> yeah. but no one has ever done it

users are close to their moms. that's why i call it mama boy drugs. and you will hear i'd rather give him money to buy heroin so he doesn't have to go on the streets and steal and rob for it. sometimes i have heard cases where the mother drives them to the spot where they pick up the heroin. that's why it is a mama's boy drug for me. >> reporter: at 22 years old, michael may have boyish looks but said his mother never paid for his heroin and didn't realize he was regularly shooting the drug in to his arms. >> it doesn't look -- i was a surgeon with the needle. hit the same spot 100 times. my mom never knew i was doing heroin. because i never left track marks. >> she said he started to use heroin at 50. he was on the way to completing the rehab program but recently he signed himself out. in order to avoid being kicked out and is back in general population. >> this is my cell.

i'm not really mad at myself because i only had three weeks left. so it is a bummer. i got to accept my consequences. >> michael walked up to an inmate and took all of his commissary and decided to tell the guy he needed to beg for them to get it back. >> i thought me and him were cooler than we were. i thought it was all fun and games. and smeb else thought it wasn't. >> the next morning i came in, i was aware of the incident. i brought him in to my office and questioned him about the incident and at that point he admitted everything he did. i thought he was doing great. he was on his 68th day. the day before this incident, i was tell thing my sergeant i can't believe the growth he's made. he was doing everything perfect. >> i wish i could go back to the program -- >> heed's a guy i can't have ba here. what he did is that serious.

boyfriend, thomas costa, who's housed in another part of the jail. >> when we first got together, he said he loved me platonically and now it is unconditionally. if thomas kills someone, i will be next to him hiding the body. if thomas spent the rest of his life in jail, i would be at every visit and every phone call. we don't do without when we have each other. it's whatfup, he said what's up to me. they figured out a way to send coded messages to me. my letters, you okay. we have a way of communicating.

coming to an end. he recently went to court and along with catching a glimpse of his girlfriend alyssa schlossberg he was given good news about the his probation violation. he was given a choice or prison or rehab. >> going down state for five years or take a drug program, long-term in patient, six months. waiting to hear if i got accepted in to the one program i did apply to. >> alyssa schlossberg got news from her judge and has already left the jail. she pled guilty to charges of distributing cocaine and sentenced to the state's drug court program for a period of five years. if she completes the rigorous program that includes in-patient drug rehab and frequent testing she will avoid further incarceration. >> she left five years ago. as soon as i found out the address i was writing. i write faithfully. she's not going to get that

letter -- she will probably get it around today. from what i hear it is about five days. >> aaron sofield continues to deal with his addiction in the drug rehabilitation center. >> aaron's growth was amazing he came in with the attitude maybe i will do this program. and from that day progressed in to wow, i do have a problem. i do have something in my life that isn't go ing the right way and i need to change it around. >> sofield who is in jail on a theft conviction turned down a chance at freedom in order to complete the program. >> he went to court and he told the judge he wanted to stay in the program, which i felt was important. a lot of people will not do that. >> i had court two weeks ago. prosecutor and judge told me i could leave, time served and basically it's get out. my stomach told me i couldn't leave. i was only here 30 days and every other program that i have been in was 30 days and right back to the streets. it's not good.

i want it 0 to work this time. i don't want to do it again. >> to accommodate the sofield's request the judge gave him a longer sentence than he normally would have, 180 days but sofield is eligible for early release upon successfully completing the program. >> what have you learned in here? >> i can't do this by myself. my thinking has changed since i have been in here. i totally don't think the same way i did when i first came in here. >> aaron has a better chance than most of the guys we have in here. he has a supportive, large family. he's bright, has college, driver's license, place to live, car. that's more than many of the people who leave here have. >> getting better is a making a decision. it doesn't just happen. it is just say it is more than saying i won't pick up a drink or drug. >> today i know i won't use. tomorrow is tomorrow.
