welcome to "way too early." the show that recommends in case of a water emergency, your wedding, take the photos after the service. wait until you see that video. it's going to give you something for the june brides to think about there. want to start off with president obama continuing his european visit today ahead of this week's 70th anniversary of the d-day landings in normandy. but it's america's current war dominating the conversation and the controversial surroundsing the captive american soldier swapped by the taliban by five senior commandsers of the taliban. video shows the transfer of bergdahl to u.s. forces in afghanistan. the 28-year-old is seen sitting in the back of a pickup truck when a u.s. military helicopter comes up. militants are positioned on hillsides. bergdahl is then given to the u.s. military. he is then escorted to the aircraft and checked for weapons

or anything on his person which then that aircraft carries him onto an american military base. the white house is defending its decision to deal with the enemy, but members of congress complained they were left in the dark about this. lawmakers are not happy and as jim mick la ch-- miklaszewski reports. >> reporter: it's preparing to launch an inquiry into bowe bergdahl's actions when he disappeared from this base in afghanistan in afghanistan five years ago. and in a rare move, the military's top commander general martin dempsey weighed in on facebook. like any american he is innocent until proven guilty. but our army's leaders will not look away from misconduct if it occurred. josh joshua corneilson.

>> he walked away from his duty as a soldier. he needs to go through due process. >> reporter: desertion is considered one of the most severe charges in the military justice system. >> you have to have gis who stay at their duty station, who do not wander off, who are there to perform duty. otherwise there's no way you can achieve a military mission. >> reporter: the army's also set to review the circumstances behind the deaths of six soldiers killed in action during operations searching for bergdahl. one killed was bergdahl's platoon leader. his mother wants to see bergdahl brought to justice. >> he's not a hero. he's a traitor. he's a deserter. he left his post in war. >> reporter: his father andy does not want his son's death to be in death. >> darren died doing what he believed in. that gives me pride. >> reporter: public anger over
2:33 am
the controversy has reached bergdahl's hometown hailey, idaho, where preparations are under way for a celebration this thont month. but the chamber of commerce president is being bombarded by what she says are hate calls. and people canceling their vacation reservations. >> i just find that shocking. you know, we're americans. we need to act like americans. and to me that's un-american. >> we want to bring in now chief foreign correspondent richard engel who is live for us in landstuhl, germany. we know about early reports about bergdahl's treatment through the videos and something was of concern to american officials, in fact the most recent official they thought the health of bergdahl looked diminished. what have we learned about how the treatment is going for him in landstuhl or have they released any information yet?
2:34 am
>> reporter: frankly they haven't released much information at all. there's been a few statements. they've been fairly vague saying that bergdahl's health is stable, that he's being treated, that he's been given some psychological counseling. that this is part of a reintegration process. but we're not getting any progress updates or reports. just that he's stable. we actually don't even know when he's going to leave here and head back to the states. there have been some speculation coming from the pentagon that it might be later today or tomorrow. all we've heard from hospital officials here is he'll leave when medically ready. >> based on your reporting and what you've been following through our wars, the video of the taliban waving the white flag, what are your impressions of this video as they transfer bergdahl from the taliban to u.s. special forces? >> reporter: we've been told by taliban sources that the white

flag is not exactly what you think it is. it suspect a white flag, we come in peace. it was actually a signal for the helicopters to show the americans that this was, in fact, the group of taliban who they were supposed to meet. the group that had bowe bergdahl. originally they asked for a green light for the forces to shine a green light for the americans to land. the taliban said they didn't have a green light, they would wave a white flag instead. the transition seems to have gone smoothly. it was fast. about one minute on the ground and then bergdahl was taken away. >> richard engel live for us in germany. appreciate it. news back here at home. it may be weeks before republicans know who will be their senator in mississippi. we had cochran and mcdaniel facing off. now because the vote is so close, they're going to head to a runoff on june 23rd. with 99% of precincts reporting,
2:36 am
mcdaniel leads by less than one point. a third candidate who has less than 2%, mcdaniel is just shy of the majority needed to win. mcdaniel appeared to pick up steam in the final day despite criticism of pictures of cochran's wife in a nursing home. he says he will win this race. >> this is a historic moment in this state's history. and because of your hard work, because of your dedication, we sit here tonight leading a 42-year incumbent. one way or the other i promise you this. whether it's tomorrow or whether it's three weeks from tonight, we will stand victorious in this race. >> senator cochran did not address his supporters last night. his campaign said a runoff could

favor his opponent. meanwhile in iowa there was a clear winner. and that's joni ernst. she's now the first to be the party nominee there. she received 56% of the vote. she will face bruce braley who she says will not represent iowa voters. >> this campaign will come down to a very simple choice. our iowa values versus bruce braley's liberal washington values. what do you think we'd rather have? iowa values! >> let's talk more about the midwest and weather. because it continues to get hammered with truly life threatening storms. as we speak there's millions of americans at risk of severe weather throughout the mississippi valley region. bill kairns joins us with more on this. you've warned us about this type of storm activity yesterday.
