isolate abbas because of the feeling that the government has been doing and trying to tell the right wingers in his own country, that there is no way to peace. peace is what gandhi used to say. they both believe in a peaceful negotiated solution, two-state solution, but there are issues with abbas and hamas, and shimon peres with the right wingers, it is not going to go anywhere soon. >> and you bring up an interesting point of whether or not peres is undermining netanyahu, and so, weighing in on that, do you believe that peres is undermining netanyahu by at the ending the meeting yesterday? >> well, i believe that when pope francis invited them both, he was not doing politics, but prayer. he understands that religion above all is what is most important, and if religion is part of the problem, religion can be part of the solution in

the middle east. so i don't think that pope francis is the guy who pretens s to know the answers to the all of these questions, and in fact, the word humility always comes up with him, because he is humble enough to admit that i don't know how the fix this, but not surprisingly, he believes in praye prayer, and he says that if we can get together, and first just pray. and if you can pray first together, maybe that is the next step towards real peace which is what everybody says they want. >> and could this be the next step, rulla, because it is about incremental steps, and the peace talks are dead and secretary of state john kerry made a number of trips to the region and yet, they did not bear any fruit, so could this be an important incremental step, and i know you said it is mostly about symbolism. >> well, if it can be translated into public support of simone peres' ideas, and which ever side, that warfare did not lead anywhere and in 60 years of conflict, they did not reach a solution. it is only a political settlement of sharing the land and giving the palestinians, and
8:42 am
abbas said that palestinians are crave ing f craving for a justice and better life and state. and israel wants more security, and so can these two things come together in prayer and be translated to political will? yes, certainly. once they both understand that there is no way to fight each other and bump into each other into the middle ages like some of the ministers in israel said, that the only way out is through a negotiated issue. this is how conflicts end and history starts. >> and let's talk about the pope and his place in it, and those who have studied him say that this meeting is emblematic of the fact that he is an activist to some extent when it comes to e el dooing with tissues -- when it comes to dealing with the issues of poverty and what did we learn about the pope francis there? >> i agree with most people. he does have a political agenda, and it is clear from day one, to reform the vatican, reform the
