"now" with alex wagner is next. antigovernment fear mongering on the fringe comes at a heavy price. it's monday, june 9th, and this is "now." >> all of nevada mourns the loss of our neighbors and friends. >> a married couple reportedly with a vendetta against the u.s. government. >> authorities say they shot and killed two police officers who were having lunch. >> what was the motivation behind walking in with no warning and executing our officers? >> we in congress, it's our duty to put in place, legislation that helps to prevent these deranged evil people who carry out these savidge acts of violence. >> no doubt the suspects have some apparent ideology that's
1:01 pm
along the lines of militia and white supremacist. >> the american people are depending on us to pass legislation and to end the violence. and in las vegas today, new details about the married couple, jared and amanda miller who, on sunday, shot and killed two police officers as they ate at a local restaurant before gupigup i gunning down another civilian and taking their own lives as part of a suicide pact. >> we certainly they're connected to a certain ideology which is anti-police and anti-government. immediately upon the shooting finishing, the suts pulled the officers out of the booth and on to the ground where they placed a flag, a "don't tread on me" yellow flag on the body of officer beck. they threw a swastika on top of his body. >> jared miller pinned a note to one of the officer's bodies announcing that this was, quote,
1:02 pm
the beginning of the revolution. the las vegas review journal also reports that jared miller said he had been kicked off bundy's ranch 80 miles northeast of las vegas while people in dlout the u.s. gathered there in protest of a roundup of bundy's cattle. according to her facebook page, amanda miller was from lafayette, indiana, and attended jefferson high school and listed her job as head of the needlework department at hobby lobby. >> harry reid lamented the tragedy in his own state. >> all the details aren't available. but there's no question that these two are murdered in cold blood. we, in congress, have a duty to put in place legislation that helps prevent these deranged, these weird, these evil people, who carry out such savidge acts of violence. >> but on the airwaves today,
1:03 pm
conspiracy theorist, alex jones of whom jared miller was allegedly a fan of, alex jones said even more anti-government paranoia. >> we are in the middle of a globalist revolution against this country right now. and my gut tells me that the cold-blooded degenerate evil killing of two police officers and a citizen in las vegas, yesterday, is absolutely staged, ladies and gentlemen. >> joining me now the host of msnbc's the reed report, joy reed. this keeps getting stranger and more distressing by the hour. two pieces. one seems to be the epidemic of mass violence and mass shootings in public spaces. the other is the far, far right
1:04 pm
fringe. alex jones is unbowed. >> and i think that's second piece is really important because here you had a couple who both were drawn to nevada, to support clive and bundy who as you recall, had people around him armed and armed in the vicinity of the bureau of land management officials meaning there could have been violence there where you had people pointing guns at federal officials and getting away with it because they decided to back off not as to escalate the situation and mixed into that crowd is this guy who gets quoted by local media and who says he was pushed out because he had, wait for it, a criminal record. this is a guy who had a criminal record of dui and assault charges going back to 2001 and 2002. and, yet, they had a whole shopping cart full of weapons, they were able to kill two police officers who were just having lunch and then move on to a second scene and kill yet another person. it's horrific but it points out that law enforcement is in particular danger with this
1:05 pm
anti-government ideology. the face of the authority is wearing a uniform and a badge but police officers, friends of mine that are law enforcement officers in florida, they always worry it's not so much the organized criminal, because they are trained to deal with that. but there are people who are being killed in routine confrontations with civilians who are armed and you just don't know what they're thinking. police officers, that's why they consistently oppose the mass proliferation of the kinds of guns that sometimes are more powerful weaponry than they have. >> i think, gun safety is a huge part of this, right? if they hadn't of been armed they couldn't have killed these people but at the same time where's the coupleability or the responsibility rely with the alex jones' of the world. on jared miller's facebook page in 2013, he said, read the website saying info wars.com. get informed or get stupid. today he says that this is a
1:06 pm
setup. a staged event, even more paranoia around this. one has to wonder, it's sort of beyond the realm of the logical -- at what point does anyone get to say to alex jones, this is completely irresponsible? >> even looking at the broader picture with the whole bundy thing, at what point is it not responsible to elevate someone to heroic status because he's refusing to conform to the norms of every other rancher who operates in the same way he does. not only not paying his fees but recruiting around him. this militia, a private militia who can tell the federal government we don't have to recognize your authority and you have the alex jones' of the world who rather than be chased by somebody that challenges their -- murdering in cold blood, through human beings with families and brothers and sisters and mom's and dads, instead of being chasened by that, to go further and add to
1:07 pm
the conspiracy oriole thinking and who have stockpiles of weapons. at some point we need is an to creep back into play here. >> i don't think you can determine everything there is to know about a person based on their facebook likes. i would say that there's much more to a soul than that but it is telling. when you look at jared miller's facebook they include the nra support the second amendment, the patriot party, rand paul 2016. ron paul, legalized weed, draft, judge, adrew nepolitano, freedom works, american crossroads and allen west. some of these things are further to the fringe than others. but for a conservative movement that's been immediately embraced, clive and bundy and has yet to do the true seoul searching necessary in the wake of him revealing himself to be who he is, one would really like a conversation on the right to
1:08 pm
happen. to sort of sort through what this kind of ideology means and whether or not it is being rejected by members of the conservative movement. >> there was a healthy skepticism of government, even for dislike. not everyone likes every administration. people can have an extremely dislike and disapproval of their government. but there's a combination. you have allen west before he became a short term congressman saying gather yours muskets and let's march on d.c. because there's a tyrant in the white house. that to a person that's completely sound might sound like rhetoric but to someone gathering arms, you have this combination of the rhetoric that says this government is tyranny and we have to fight it. and then the nra capitulating to open groups that go into restaurants, armed to the teeth, terrifying people. how is that going to look the next time somebody is in cc's
1:09 pm
pizza and someone walks in with their long gun strapped on. how terrify asking that going to be? real threat with real intent to murder people walk into restaurants walk into restaurants in texas many years ago and killed people? this is a real threat. i think the nra also needs to take a step back and think about the idea of creating a devotion to guns that is sort of very worshipful and bravado back attached to it, has consequences. some people can handle that and are sane and wrapped real tight and some are not. >> the last piece of this. we've talked about the statistic of the raise of these groups. the number including armed militia has risen 813% following the election of president obama. it feels like the election of america's first black president has given -- has sort of created this atmosphere in which hate and anti-government paranoia have flourished. at the same time, some of this
1:10 pm
seems to be economic disparity. people outcast from society and feel like they no longer have a place at the table and who are angry about their disenfranchisement. and i wonder in the coming four to eight years, is this just part of who we are as a country? we can't obviously predict the future. i feel like this problem is jeepjeep deeper than the color of the president's skin. >> if you talk at the folks at the law center they tell you the previous spike in anti-government militia activity was during the clinton administration. part of it ask partisanship. when a democrat is in the white house. this fear that attaches that they're going to send the black helicopters out to collect v's guns. that attaches to almost democrat. but with clinton, it was a 400% increase. it like downed or tripled with barack obama. so there's a lot mixed in. it's not all one thing. rate or ideology. but a mix of different things for different people and it's all scary and it's all armed to

new faces in the broken immigration system. in the last eight months more than 47,000 child migrants traveling without their parents have been caught trying to cross the southwest border into the united states. these are young children, many of them are under the age of 13, traveling by themselves, for thousands of miles, mostly from central america. by the end of this fiscal year, federal officials predict that number h climb to 90,000. and in recent weeks, the obama administration has called in an urgent humanitarian situation and announced new efforts to address it. on friday, the justice department announced they would provide lawyers to these
1:16 pm
children and in the past few weeks, due to overwhelmed facilities in texas been they created a series of emergency shelters bussing hundreds of women and children to the facilities in arizona. there are currently about a thousand children at the facility. the initials told the arizona republic some of the children were sleeping in plastic containers and hadn't showered in up to ten days. by saturday afternoon, portable showers and restrooms had been brought to the facility and mattresses are currently on the way, but. >> reporter: been there are reports that the facility is running out of supplies to accommodate what has become a flood of arrivals across the border. joining me now from washington is the executive director of kids in need of defense, wen did you young. from tucson, the national correspondent for the los angeles times. cindy, let me ask you, there are a lot of competing narratives about why these kids are coming in such huge numbers and seemingly, all of a sudden. one group of folks say it's because of deteriorating situation in central america.
1:17 pm
others say it's because of the promise of the hope of citizenship or residents in the united states. from your reporting what do you gather? >> well, actually, the white house just held a press conference earlier today in regards to that matter. it seemed like they were playing damage control. they were definitely reiterating of the influx of unaccompanied children coming in flew texas has to do with what's happening in central america. this not only crushing poverty, but the increase in violence and particularly in honduras, guatemala and el salvador. because of the violence, is what the administration is saying, that's why these children are coming over. but also, at the same time, you're having parents with children coming over. so two things are happening at once. you're also having single mothers who are coming through the border with at least one
1:18 pm
child. and the mothers that i have been speaking with have told me that there are rumors circulating throughout latin america, particularly central america, that if they come through and they give themselves up to u.s. customs and border patrol officials that they will be given some kind of immigration relief but they're only getting half the story and it seems like smugglers are really taking advantage of what's happening right now and those rumors that are circulating throughout central america. >> wendy, something obviously needs to be done to quell the rumor mill but one must assume circumstances must be dire to send a 12 or 13-year-old unaccompanied across the board. we're talking about 90,000 unaccompanied minor this is year alone. in terms of the sort of resourcing that's needed to deal with this, do we have any hope of getting adequate protections and supplies for these kids on the border? >> first of all, it's important to understand this truly is a humanitarian refugee like
1:19 pm
crisis. this is not an immigration movement. these kids are being pushed out of central america because of the extreme violence happening this their home countries and desperate families are making desperate decisions on behalf of their children. we have to come up with a solution that's multitiered. it's important to look at the root causes of the migration and it's trying to address that in partnership with the home country governments and we need to look at what's happening to children this transit. it's a very dangerous voyage that i hope we can save most kids from. we see girls who are raped along the way. kids may be murdered. they're robbed. and then it's important to determine which children need protection and who can safely return home. >> these numbers, it is a refugee humanitarian situation and again, based on your reporting and your bearing witness to all of this, what happens to these kids when they
1:20 pm
arrive at the border. if you can walk us through what that situation is like. >> well, i think it really depends on who you speak with. but the reports that i am hearing is that the texas sector, especially around the rio grande area, they're so overwhelmed that some of these children are being kept for more than 72 hours in detention, for instance. and kept in facilities that aren't equipped for children. so that's why they are moving these children from texas to, for instance, this coastal area. you had more than a thousand children unaccompanied minors moved there over the weekend and while there, they're given some kind of shelter, meals and things of that sort to try to keep in there but that's really just a weigh station. the end game is that supposedly,
1:21 pm
they will be able to be reunited with their parents. when they get there when they go -- when they're there for a few, i think 72 hours, supposedly, then they're supposed to be sent to either ventura county or more h personal nbt facilities. ventura county. san antonio, oklahoma. and supposed to stay there for a certain amount of time while officials offer refugee and resettlement is supposed to find they kids parents or some kinds of relatives to be able to place them with them. during this whole time these children are under removal proceedings. and they're supposed to get their day in immigration court. as to what happens in immigration court, that's a whole other matter so right now it seems like the administration is focusing solely on how to how to accommodate this influx. as to what happens afterwards is another issue. >> wendy, that's, i think, the prospect of these kids who are
1:22 pm
waiting at military bases. some of whom anecdotally are sleeping in plastic containers. haven't had showers. the question of adequacy. the question of who is representing these minors in courts of law. we know the doj has announced 100 lawyers parallels represent the minors but a bandaid overstates what that potentially represents. given your work on this specific issues with what is needed? >> sure. first of all these kids are not getting a free ride. they're placed into the deportation proceedings as any adult would be. that's an adversary yal's very formal courtroom setting where the child has to present his or her case to a rogue immigration judge while a trial attorney in the department of homeland security is arguing for the child's remove value and there's the 5-year-old who has to present her case by herself. i've literally seen 5-year-old in immigration court without a lawyer. they need legal council first
1:23 pm
and foremost. our immigration don't provide council to children so they're very reliant on organizations like mine. kids in need of defense, where we facility fate matching the child with a volunteer attorney from the private sector among the law firm, corporate and law school community. what the department of justice just announced is a good step in the right direction. the first time that the department of justice is really entered the scene to say, okay, we recognize the importance of council to kids of these in these proceedings. we can't reach a fair decision without it. we're going to help organizations like this provide these kids with council. this is critical. nobody understands this better than the justice department. they administer the immigration courts across the united states. imagine being an immigration judge with a 5 glooerld front of you with no council. it's hard to reach a fair decision. >> a 5-year-old defending him or herself in court is actually unimaginable. wendy young and cindy, thank you very much for your time. >> thank you.

democrats in virginia are livid after one of their own decided to vacate his seat tipping the balance of power in the state legislature into republican hands. most egregiously, his departure comes amid reports that he was lured into he signing by the gop in an effort to stop medicaid expansion in the state. according to the washington post part of the luring may have

included a judgeship for his daughter and a job as deputy director of the state's tobacco commission late this afternoon, they reported that though he has indeed resigned two sources say he will not be taking a seat on the commission. the very suggestion of this deal and the rumors around it, have some accusing the virginia gop of resorting to bribery with the aim of blocking virginia's democratic governor, from expanding medicaid to 400,000 virginians which he was trying to do as part of the state's budget process. >> democrats are furious. i've learned some new curse words in the last 24 hours, even at my age. >> it was a coup for the republicans to do it. it raised a lot of questions about how business operates in virginia. >> the virginia gop denies any did prokquid pro kuo but pucket on the record in support of

medication expansion. >> we talk pucket on the phone and he said pushing medicare through with the budget is the best way to ensure coverage for more than 400,000 virginians. >> including 20,000 in pucket's on district. 400,000 virginians who are likely to fay dearly for his sudden change of heart. tobacco commission and judgeships aside, it's easy to get lost in the political drama but the real story here as it always has been is the fight to expand access to health coverage for lower income americans. that's a fight republicans have been willing to wage at every step and now, with pucket's help it looks like the gop is closer to its goal of depriving almost half a million poor virginiansingvirginian virginiansing a to health care joining me now is lee lucas. luis, what did you make of phil puckets resignation today?

>> i was absolutely in shock because there has only been one other time in the 23 years i have been a member of the senate of virginia that we had someone to so low to throw this under a run-away train like this. before i go to senator pucket, i want to just preface my statement by saying, someone said to me earlier today this was an all-time low for the gop. and i said, that is not true. this is the way they operate. what i believe happened is they look for the weakest link in the chain because they have been talking about senator pucket for the last two years his daughter was not going to become a judge as long as he was a member of the senate of virginia. there's no rule or nothing that said that's in fact the case but they kept coercing senator pucket because they wanted to try to get their way in trying to deny medicaid expansion in virginia, and, thus, denying 400,000 people in virginia

insurance. and a lot of these people were literally die without this insurance. and this is the all-time low as some people call it, of the republicans to make sure that we don't expand medicaid in virginia. >> senator lucas, did democrats talk to phil pucket and say, look, you're making a grave mistake here? >> nobody had a clue. we said, everybody is tough. wi all be strong and pucket was right there. but another thing. when pucket ran, his district was one of the most vulnerable in the state and all of us gave u money to the caucus to fuel pucket's campaign to get him re-elected. i'm not talking about a little bit of money. i'm talking 3, 4, 500,000 that we all gave him out of our campaign accounts to make sure he got re-elected because he had the tough district so with that he says, he told us, thank you for everything that you've done and i'm going to hang strong with my colleagues.
1:52 pm
but i knew that this issue with the judgeship with his daughter was a very touchy situation. many of us have heard that your daughter will never be a judge as long as you're a member of the senate and as long as i'm here. >> senator lieus, let me ask you. what happens now? the gop now has control of the legislature or the house. is the government going to shut down in virginia? >> i do not the government is going to shut down and i believe we'll get medicaid expansion. i want to say this. we have had found hatown hall m across the state. one in chesapeake and one in the city of portsmouth. let me tell you. almost 90% of all of the people who turn out at those town hall meetings said that they are in favor of medicaid expansion and they need this insurance. there is no "u" in cry from the

people that i talk to at any of these town hall meetings who want to see medicaid exsmangs denied in virginia. these people want the insurance. they want to be able to fay the premiums that they can afford. the republicans would rather see these people die and call it obama care, as a way of making sure that it indict been because they don't want the president to have a victory. look at what they're doing to the people in their own district? pucket has over 20,000 people in his district in need of health insurance. >> it's a shocking advocatation of his situation and something we'll be watching closely. thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today, senator. >> thank you so much for having me on. after the break, if you've been wonder what's been up with lawrence o'donnell questions will soon be answered. the one and only host of "the

the one thing. pain killers -- that would be the one thing. >> lawrence, great to see you. not just the lighting. your spirit seems whole. you look great. we cannot -- >> that's the acting. >> fine, fine acting. great to see you and we look forward to your happy return on "the last word" in the very near future. >> that's all for thu. see you back here tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. eastern.
