state in america, yeah, it's got palm trees. can you believe that? good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. in a history-making upset, house majority leader eric cantor lost his republican primary election by double digits. cantor, the second most powerful republican in the house, was defeated by tea party challenger dave brat. brat won by a commanding 12% margin, an astonishing upset for cantor, whose own internal polling showed him with a 34-point lead just last month, and cantor out-raised his opponent by 26-1. nbc's tracie potts is in washington with more on what this could mean. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: betty, good morning. well, this could certainly lead to a scramble for leadership positions for republicans here on capitol hill. eric cantor earlier in the day wasn't even in his district. he was here on capitol hill as those votes started to come in. >> this is a miracle from god that just happened.

>> reporter: it's certainly unprecedented. never has a house majority leader lost his seat in a primary. >> and it's disappointing, sure. >> reporter: and this was a crushing defeat with most precincts in, cantor was behind 10 percentage points. >> look, obviously, we came up short. >> what do we want? >> reporter: cantor was hammered for supporting the dream act, part of president obama's immigration reform. like these activists at his victory party last night, cantor fought back, reminding voters that he led the fight against amnesty, but it wasn't enough. >> eric cantor's defeat here is going to scare more and more republicans from touching this. >> reporter: the ripple effect of this upset goes far beyond virginia. it's proof that the tea party is not dead. key republicans in north carolina, kentucky and idaho won their primaries. mississippi's incumbent has been forced into a runoff. now cantor is out, despite

race between cantor and brat wasn't the only contested republican primary miles per hour south carolina, establishment republican senator lindsey graham handily defeated six tea party challengers in the state's gop senate primary. he even avoided a runoff election by carrying 59% of the vote. and senator tim scott easily won south carolina's special senate primary with about 90% of the vote over challenger randall young. if he wins later on in the general election, scott could become the state's first elected black senator. well, a third outbreak of gun violence in just three weeks. today, the portland suburb of troutdale is searching for answers. a gunman opened fire at an oregon high school on tuesday, killing a 14-year-old student and injuring a teacher. police have not revealed the identity of the suspect who was found dead at the scene. now, following that shooting, president obama said no other developed nation would tolerate the same level of gun violence. >> my biggest frustration so far
2:05 am
is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who, you know, can do just unbelievable damage. >> president obama has pushed for tougher gun control measures, including stricter background checks, but he continues to face fierce opposition from gun rights advocates. a resounding victory for veterans across the country. the house voted swiftly and unanimously in favor of a new bill that would support veterans seeking medical care. the vote was 421-0. the new measure allows veterans' use of medical facilities outside of the system if they are forced to wait more than 30 days for an appointment or if they live more than 40 miles from a va center. the house bill is a response to recent controversy over allegations the va kept secret waiting lists to cover up lengthy delays.
