i'm betty nguyen. radical militants sieged two of the country's major cities and will launch attacks against baghdad itself. the iraqi government wants the u.s. to consider offering air support in their fight against the militants. richard engle has more from istanbul, turkey. >> the iraqi government is lu losing control. some iraqi security forces are fighting but most appear to be stripping off their uniforms leaving them in the streets and abandoning their posts, weapons, and vehicles. they're retreating from islamic extremists who today got control of iraq's second largest city and advanced much further. thousands of civilians are fleeing the area living in

tents. the u.s. fought a decade long war for this not to happen. the radicals are from an al qaeda offshoot. many are the same insurgents u.s. troops battled for years. now they're allied with militants from syria creating a single front. why is this happening? they ruled iraq for 13 centuries until the u.s. invasion toppled saddam hussein. they want their country back. they hate the shiite government which excluded them from power and there are no u.s. troops around anymore to stop them. we could be witnessing the start of a long civil war in iraq. and this is not just a problem for iraq and syria. these militants are also very anti-american. one former top commander of u.s. troops in iraq told me what is happening is tragic. richard engle, nbc news,

jones for cantor's surprising loss this week. in an interview with variety jones says he doesn't know and doesn't care who gets the credit for cantor's defeat but he will gladly take some of it. jones ran against him in 2002 and lost. >> they blocked elizabeth warren's bill that would have let them finance student loans at lower rates. now she is going to side with his competition. >> i plan to fight back on this and i hope everybody else does too. one way i'm going to start fighting back is i'm going to go down to kentucky and i'm going to campaign for allison grimes. she is tough. she is fiesty. she endorsed the student loan bill. >> montana is the only state that doesn't have some kind of texting and driving ban. now that south carolina put a new texting law into effect this week. at least one montana senator says she'll propose a bill next year. well, babs hit the nation's

for his position. who are the front runners. >> representative mccarthy is the one that cantor prefers. there's other really conservative ones but i think we'll have a situation here where thing versus gotten to bad in the republican party that people are stabbing themselves in the front. it's going to be an interesting race. i think it's going to be all out in the open. >> yeah, you mention mccarthy. does he have an advantage, eric mccarthy since eric cantor helped groom him? >> yeah. i would think maybe the last thing that he wanted was an endorsement from eric cantor but there it is. i think that john bainer is spending a lot of time right now looking over his shoulder but have to say something here. we need to get a grip here. i don't think that this is the end of the republic. i don't think that history is going to be shaken by this for 100 years or more. i think this kind of thing happens. the speaker of the house, tom foley was beaten in a congressional race.
